Heavy snow had buried my van in our driveway. My husband dug around the wheels, rocked the van back and forth, and finally pushed me free. I was on the road when I heard an odd noise. I got on the phone and called home.
“Thank goodness you answered,” I said when my husband picked up. “There’s an alarming sound coming from under the van. For a moment I thought I was dragging you down the highway!”
My husband replied, “And you didn’t think to stop and check before ringing me?”

COULD YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO WITHSTAND STAGFLATION? HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW
ByGregMcGeorge –– Shaw andPartnersFinancial Adviser. Adviser.
Stagflation is a word that is appearing more often in the news. It describes a di cult economic situation where growth slows, but the cost of living keeps rising. For households and investors, it feels like being squeezed from bothsides.
Usually these two forces tend tomoveinoppositedirections. When the economy slows, inflation usually falls as spending drops. When the economy is strong, prices can rise as demand picks up. Stagflation breaks this pattern, creating a tougher environmenttonavigate.
One of the key challenges is understanding how inflation quietly erodes wealth. Even if your savings are growing they may not be keeping pace with
rising prices, e.g. if inflation is running above the interest on your savings meaning your money is losing purchasing power. At the same time, slower growth a ects businesses. Companies sell less, profits fall, and job security weakens. Share markets struggle in these conditions, particularly companies that rely on rapid growth.
Historyshowsthisisnotanew problem. The 1970s were marked by a severe period of stagflation, when high Inflation and weak growth hit many economies at once. While traditional investments struggled, assets such as property, infrastructure and commodities proved more resilient.

The key takeaway is that no single investment can fully protect against stagflation. Instead, a well-diversified portfoliocanhelpmanagerisk. Just as importantly, staying disciplined and regularly reviewing your investments can make a meaningful di erenceovertime.
While stagflation can be uncomfortable, it’s not permanent. Economic conditions eventually stabilise and patient investors are well rewarded when growth returns.

GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT HELPS SELWYN SCHOOLS PREPARE FOR GROWTH
The Government has announced a significant investment in school infrastructure acrossSelwyn as partofBudget2026,delivering 59 additional classrooms acrossthe South Islandto stay ahead of rapid population growth.
Selwyn remains the fastestgrowing district in New Zealand. The latest funding includes four new classrooms for Darfield School, six for DarfieldHighSchool,anew18 -classroom primary school in Lincoln South, and the next expansion phase for Rolleston College.
For Darfield School Principal Meredith Devonald, the investment is essential for maintaining quality learning environments. While the school currently manages at the start of each year, surging new entrant numbers quickly createpressure.
“We have had to utilise areas such as our school library and Maker Space as new entrant classrooms," Meredith says. "Four new classrooms will ensure that for the next few

yearstheschoolwillbeableto use actual classroom spaces, and our Garden to Table programmecancontinueinour MakerSpace.”
The school’s roll growth has been accelerating, climbing from 232 students in 2017 to 310 in 2026. Meredith noted that the expansion would provide practical benefits like purpose-built storage and better collaboration for teachingteams."Thegrowthof our community has been included in our strategic planning and budgeting," she adds.
At Darfield High School, Principal Andy England says the arrival of six new classroomsisaproactivemove toavoidthecongestionseenin otherregions.
“Thesignificanceisthatwecan stay ahead of, or in line with, the growth of our school roll," Andy says. "Many schools have had to educate students in halls or corridors, and we've beenworkingwiththeMinistry of Education for at least three yearstoavoidthis.”
Whilecurrentgrowthhasbeen
manageable,Andyexpectsitto accelerate soon. A key priority for the high school is ensuring that physical expansion does not compromise the school’s communityfeel.
“Achallengewerecogniseisto keep our rural character and qualities, such as strong relationships and knowing each other, in the face of growth. Darfield and the district we serve is special because of our rural qualities andwearedeterminedtokeep itthatway.”
The new facilities may also allow for the modernisation of specialty areas. Andy hopes to develop"paddocktoplate"and construction academies to complement the school's existingagriculturalprograms. Ultimately, the investment provides the community with certainty. “We will always be committed to serving the needsofourentirecommunity, and we will not turn away any in-zone eligible student," Andy says. "We have plentyofspace to expand and keep our green spaces, and I am confident in ourlong-termplanning."

THREE DECADES OF INNOVATION AND FAMILY COMMITMENT
Southern Alp Sprouts co-founderKarenMcGrathsays winning the Love of the Land category at the NZI Rural Women Business Awards recognises not only her own contribution to horticulture, but also the family, team and community behind the Canterbury business built over nearlythreedecades.
Karen is one of eight category winners announced by Rural Women NewZealand, with the Supreme Winner to be revealed at a gala dinner at ParliamentonJuly23.
Raised in the country, Karen says she has always felt a strong connection to the land, a value that still shapes the business she runs with her husbandJason.

The couple began experimenting with sprout production in 1998 from their Springfield garage, using homemade equipment including a bathtub to grow their first snowpea andalfalfa sprouts. An Australian grower shared valuable advice, but also warned they were “crazy” to enter such a demanding, year-roundbusiness.
Undeterred, Karen and Jason combinedtheir backgroundsin agriculture, horticulture and mechanical engineering to grow the enterprise from a cottageindustryintoapurpose -built Yaldhurst facility in 2007. It is now the South Island’s largest sprout producer.
Today, Southern Alp Sprouts employs 10 sta and produces fresh sprouts year-round using specialised equipment and glacial water sourced from the Southern Alps. Products are harvested, packed and distributed daily to supermarkets and wholesalers acrosstheSouthIsland.
Karen says the business has alwaysbeenafamilye ort.
“I am supported every day by my very clever Kiwi husband, an incredibly dedicated team, and our loyal customers who continue to support what we do,” she said in accepting the award.
Their four daughters, now
pursuingtheirownstudiesand careers, continue to support thefamilybusinessfromafar. Still family-owned and operated, the business continuestoprovidenutritious, a ordable food to New Zealanders. Karen describes sprouts as “tiny but mighty” vegetables with significant healthbenefits.
Sustainability remains central to the operation. Southern Alp Sprouts uses solar heating, recycles production water for pasture irrigation and feeds green waste to cattle, while prioritising local seed, packaging and services where possible.
Karen also serves on the International Sprout Growers Association Boardrepresenting Australasia, helping connect growers, food safety organisations, universities and scientists to strengthen the futureoftheindustry.
Shededicatedtheawardtoher husband, daughters and the womenwhopavedthewayfor future generations, saying she hopes to keep strengthening the sprout sector and New Zealand horticulture in the yearsahead.

“AI is rapidly shaping how we approach learning and development, and Kaiako Mōhio – Coach Wizz is New Zealand Cricket’s first step
into that space,” he says. “It’s an interactive AI coaching assistant designed to support coachesinrealtime, answering technical and tactical questionsastheyarise.”
He says the idea came from a desire to make learning more accessible and practical.
“Rather than coaches needing to search through extensive e-manuals, Coach Wizz provides just-in-time support, helping them solve problems and make decisions in the moment.”
For Toby, the scholarship has personal and professional meaning. “Personally, it’s a nice piece ofrecognition, but I see it more as a reflection of the great work happening within cricket in New Zealand and across the wider community sport sector,” he says.“Themostrewardingpart
of my role is seeing young people playing cricket with smilesontheirfaces.”
He also acknowledges the behind-the-scenes support.
“My whānau make a lot of sacrifices to allow me to give my best to this work, so it’s reallyspecialforthemtoshare in this moment as well,” he says. “Professionally, the scholarshipissignificant.Itwill hopefully help accelerate my learning and development, which ultimately means I can bettersupportcoachesandthe environments they create for youngpeople.”
He adds, “Research consistentlyshowsthat quality coaching is the biggest influence on the experiences young people have in sport. Contributing to that space is something I take a lot of pridein.”

A man walked into a pet shop and asked for a talking cenHpede.
The shop owner said, “You’re in luck, I’ve got one right here.”
He sold the man the cenHpede in a liIle white box. The man took it home, opened the box and said, “Would you like to go to the pub for a beer?” There was no answer.
Thinking the cenHpede might not have heard him, he asked again, “Would you like to go to the pub for a beer?” SHll nothing.
By now the man was geJng annoyed, so he shouted, “HEY! Do you want to go to the pub for a beer or not?”
A liIle voice came from the box:
“I heard you the first Hme! I’m puJng my shoes on!”
