MALVERN LUCKY WITH ACCESS TO SWIMMING LESSONS Learning to swim is an essential part of New Zealand life, however swim schools across New Zealand are facing swim instructor shortages and are struggling to keep up with the demand according to Swim Coaches and Teachers New Zealand president Dan Fulton.

There are many waiting lists for children to get into swim lessons due to a shortage of instructors available.

However, local Malvern Swim School operators, mother and daughter duo, Sue and Tegan Stokes say they are pleased and proud, despite the national shortage, to be able to offer swimming lessons within their local communities utilising local staff. The pair are passionate about swimming and water safety education.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS WITH GEORGE ELDER

By George Elder, takebackyrhealth.com I tend to forget about New Year resolutions by the third week, however, here are some ideas that are super easy to do and even easier to continue way past the third week of the year.

We all know there are things we should eat less of, but it is very hard to stick to this and when we eat out, it all becomes a mega effort. When it’s too hard, we fall back on what we’ve been doing.

I suggest you forget what happens when eating out or dining at a friend’s place, instead just focus on your eating at home so that those meals are much healthier.

Even a small change like this will make a difference.

First, and most important, collect up all the seed oils, margarine, fake butters and vegetable oils in the pantry and refrigerator and put them in the rubbish bin, where they belong. Then go out and buy coconut oil, olive oil and butter. These oils are so much better for you. By the way,

coconut oil does not taste of coconuts. Use these oils in cooking and baking, in dressings and real butter on your toast. Your body will thank you.

Next, make the switch to sour dough bread. It is the only fermented traditional bread with low sugar. Just ensure it has been fermented overnight.

It tastes amazing.

Focus on foods you regularly eat that you could substitute with a low sugar or a low grain option. Here are some ideas, buy low sugar sauces, low sugar sweets, low sugar colas

and soft drinks, and, occasionally, replace rice with cauliflower rice.

Finally, don’t be afraid of meat, the world’s most nutritious food. There is a lot of misinformation about meat, which is surprising as many ancestral diets over thousands of years have been heavy on meat without problems. Hong Kong residents have a very high life expectancy and a super high meat consumption rate.

A MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS IN DARFIELD The Darfield Residents Association (DRA) was thrilled with the response to the Christmas Lights Trail, Santa’s Grotto and Christmas Extravaganza in the Park organized in the lead-up to Christmas. DRA chairman Harvey Polglase says, “The support from businesses, the community, and children of Darfield was wonderful, making it a memorable Xmas for many.”

Hundreds of children visited with Santa and enjoyed a morning in the park with facepainting, bouncy castle, and lolly scrambles in addition to free BBQ sausages.

“Sponsorship from the Malvern Community Board and generous donations from local businesses contributed to a very successful event, which will become a fixture on the calendar.”

Sharn Nu’u on behalf of the Malvern Community Board says, “In 2022, I was privileged to be asked by Cr. Bob Mugford to be Santa’s Little Helper at Santa’s Grotto held at the Darfield Jail. It was a great opportunity to get to know my fellow board members and connect with the community, so of course I was keen to get involved. Over 450 gifts were gifted to the children of Malvern, and seven hampers gifted to local families. I was in awe of the amount of love and care that had gone into the grotto, making sure every child got a free gift, and every family received a free entry into a raffle for a hamper made up of beautiful items that I learned was donated by local businesses.

Many families mentioned how glad they were the grotto was

back - having been unable to open during the Covid pandemic - and asked that the grotto continue. For many families, it was tradition to get their Santa photo at the jail.

After some conversations, it was agreed the Malvern Community Board would continue this wonderful tradition that Cr. Mugford and his wife Pam founded a decade ago.

2023 was just as successful!

Approximately 200 sports balls were donated from local individuals and businesses as part of a ball donation drive that was initiated by Liezel Nel. Another 300 gifts were donated by various businesses and locals including the Malvern Lions and Darfield MenzShed. Eight hampers, made up of donations from local businesses, were part of the free raffle, and the winners were drawn at the Christmas Extravaganza in Darfield on Saturday, December 23rd.

Over 50 wonderful letters, from children, were collected from Santa’s Letterbox.

Santa’s Little Helpers ensured each letter was read. Santa has asked that a few be given to the Malvern News to publish as he felt they were rather creative;

Source: Fire and Emergency New Zealand The resent fires along the Darfield/Kirwee railway line provided a timely reminder to everyone that it just takes a spark to start a wildfire, particularly as the fire danger increases.

With the warm weather set to continue over the next month, the fire danger is only set to increase, leading Fire and Emergency Canterbury District Commander Dave Stackhouse to declare a restricted fire season until further notice.

A restricted fire season means anyone planning on lighting an openopen-air fire will need a permit.

You can apply for a permit at www.checkitsalright.nz.

"You only have to see from the events of recent weeks how small sparks can quickly turn into large fires which threaten homes, buildings,

animals and communities," Dave Stackhouse says.

"Although a restricted season would not have prevented these fires, it does give us greater protection from unwanted fires by ensuring any open-air fires are only completed with a permit."

The previous two years of increased rainfall has seen increased grass and vegetation growth across the district.

"This is now drying out, and our crews are reporting greater effort being required to contain and extinguish even relatively small fires.”

Anyone planning on lighting fires this season must check the weather conditions. If it’s hot and windy, do not light a fire, even if you have a permit.

Dave Stackhouse says, "In addition, make sure you undertake spark-generating activities, like mowing or

grinding, during the cooler parts of the day – early morning or in the evening”.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS • Create safety zones around your house to act as a barrier against fire.

• Plant low flammability plant species around buildings.

• Keep your lawn mown and well irrigated, your gutters and roof clear of debris, and choose low flammability plants.

• Make sure your driveway clearance is at least 4 metres wide and 4 metres high to allow access for emergency vehicles.

• Ensure there is easy access to water for firefighting.

• Check the wildfire risk regularly, and think about when you do particular activities to reduce the risk of an accidental fire.

GLENTUNNEL YOGA CLASSES – A FRESH START FOR 2024 Have you ever considered doing yoga and thought “I’m not flexible enough, young enough or fit enough”?

Lisa began teaching in Glentunnel last year and had a great response. So much so, she is setting up a second class. The 8-week course structure is designed to introduce you to the foundations of yoga, your breath and body awareness.

Whether you are a beginner, have injuries or your own unique limitations; yoga postures can be modified to suit your needs. Likewise, if you have yoga experience,

options are given to deepen your yoga enquiry. One of her students commented, “With me being a newbie to yoga, Lisa has made the experience rather enjoyable. She has been very understandable and made classes doable for all. I wish I had started years ago.”

This beautiful little church was gifted to the community by J B A Acland, his wife Emily Weddall Acland laying the foundation stone in 1868. We were able to sit in the church and hear Rose and Johnny Acland tell us the history their family and Mount Peel Station, a fine finale to an excellent day.

MALVERN/DARFIELD MENZ SHED

By Neil Roberts, Chairman It is now six years since the Malvern Menz Shed was established in Darfield. During this time, we have been able to extend the floor space of our workshop and upgrade our equipment and machinery.

This also applies to our personal skills.

So, what do we do? We repair and restore wooden furniture, and we repair and make outdoor furniture to your specifications.

Woodturning is very popular, and we have several bowls and platters on display – we are very fortunate to have an excellent tutor. For metalwork, we do basic welding and metal lathing.

We have a large range of wooden toys on display, or we can fix those special ones, dolls prams, rocking

horses, etc.

What do we charge? Small jobs we can usually do straight away. It is surprising what you can get done for a plate of scones or a sponge cake! For larger work, we charge materials at cost, plus an hourly rate.

Call in and see us at the back of the workshop, McLaughlins Road, Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am till 12 noon. Don’t forget to check out our large range of assorted wooden toys for sale and an outdoor coffee table.

BELLYFUL NEEDS YOUR HELP Bellyful is a charity that helps support families with a new baby or young children and who don’t have any immediate support available to do what the charity does – cook and deliver free meals.

Over the last year, Bellyful Selwyn volunteers cooked and supplied over 1100 meals to 148 families in the district.

Bellyful Selwyn co-branch coordinator Karen Spackman says, “Last year we cooked every month with the cost of a cookathon being between $500-600 a month.”

The local charity relies on the generosity of people and businesses in the communities. Meals are cooked by volunteers in a commercial kitchen and include the same five key meals that are nutritious and tasty. These meals use the same recipes nationwide: Beef Lasagne, Beef Bolognese Sauce, Macaroni Cheese, Tomato and Red Lentil Soup, and Mild Vegetarian Curry.

This year the charity is looking for corporate groups to help

with the cookathons (meals are made in batches and frozen ready for distribution) and donations.

Monetary donations go towards the cost of meals, delivery of meals, and hiring of the community centre and equipment to make the meals.

Meals are delivered to Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Hornby, Halswell, Leeston,

Southbridge, Dunsandal, Darfield, West Melton and many small communities around the Selwyn district.

Source: Health New Zealand Te Mana Ora | Community and Public Health has issued a health warning for the Waikirikiri-Selwyn River at Whitecliffs Domain.

The warning follows finding moderate to high cover of potentially toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria) in the Waikirikiri-Selwyn River.

People should avoid the area and animals, particularly dogs, should not be allowed near the water until the health warning has been lifted.

There are also other access points along the WaikirikiriSelwyn River that may have benthic cyanobacteria present.

People are advised to treat every low-flowing river

cautiously, check for the presence of benthic cyanobacteria and avoid contact.

Dr Cheryl Brunton, Medical Officer of Health for Te Mana Ora, National Public Health Service, says the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.

“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips.”

“If you experience any of

these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had contact with dark brown/ black algal mats or water in this area”, Dr Brunton says.

Pets that show signs of illness after encountering algal mats should be taken to a vet immediately.

People and animals should remain out of the waterways until the warnings have been lifted.

Environment Canterbury is monitoring the sites, and the public will be advised of any changes in water quality.

Darfield were all out for 187 off 37.4 overs.

followed by Ben Alexander with 36 not out, off 29 balls.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB And just like that it’s a new year and time for our Memorial Shoot held in memory of those who have passed on. It was a good day for shooting with nary a cloud in the sky but a stiff breeze to make things interesting. Most of the attendees were pretty happy with their 20 single rise off 16 metres as a warm up. So on to the important stuff – round two and handicap by distance.

Some good scores and plenty of not so good were the results and with four possibles (25/25), two on 24 and six on 23, and with prizes for first to ninth, someone would miss out. Then a repeat for round three after the tea break for the memorial trophy. Three possibles to shoot for the win

and the 23s scrapping for the dregs with just two placings to fill. Some excellent shooting on display in the shoot-offs for both events although it did take a bit of time to finally clear up the results, with no one going out of their way to miss and shorten the time taken (you would have thought there was a sheep station riding on the result).
