All craft and trade sites had a bumper year and the kids were entertained thoroughly with face painting, games, bikes and rides. The time and effort by all the participants and competitors made for some spectacular displays and inspiration. The Ellesmere Pipe Band led the Grand Parade which highlighted all the winners, animals and machinery.

ARTIST CALENDAR FUNDRAISER A new 2024 HoroARTland calendar that showcases artists in the Malvern area is now available to the public for purchase.

The concept for the calendar was dreamt up by Diana Irving, who shared her idea with Dee Innes who has been involved in presenting the arts to the district. Amanda King of By The Horns created the calendar.

Dee says, “The calendar is a different way of promoting talented local artists and a means of fundraising for the Hororata Parish”.

Many of the artists have a strong connection to the district and some artworks, which are of different media, feature local landscapes.

The calendar features artists Simon Edwards, Cathie Bell, Denise Savage, Sarah Barrett, Caroline Bartholomew, Anna

Guild, Amanda King, Mike Glover, Amelia Guild, Soon-Lee Spicer, and Patterson Parkin.

“The profits will go towards the day to day running of the parish, and to help provide welfare and pastoral care to the wider community,” says Dee. Dee, Diana, and Amanda, all agree it has been fun getting the project off the ground, into print and finally selling the calendars.

“We had 500 printed and they’re selling well,” says Dee. “We are now known locally as the calendar girls!”

STUDIO CLEAR OUT Te Huanui’s annual Summer cash and carry exhibition takes on a slightly different format this year, more market, less gallery in style, with artists from the Selwyn area and slightly beyond, clearing out their studios of experiments, maybes, and seconds (slightly flawed artworks) with much of the artwork reasonably priced.

The Summer Market / Studio Clear Out exhibition will run from Friday, December 1 through until late January 2024. While no official opening will be held, three late nights will run from 6.30 8.30pm on Wednesdays 6, 13 and 20, with drinks and nibbles provided.

Keepers each year at private ceremonies in Scotland in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the industry. This year the ceremony was held at Blair Castle, which is the fortress and home of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl. It was the 66th Ceremony and Banquet to take place there. “It’s the home to the only legal private army in Europe,” says Siona.

“It was nothing short of spectacular.”

Whisky has been Siona’s passion for the last 20 years and she says the enjoyment for her comes from understanding and enjoying the history, the people, the places and the processes.

“Personally, all of these factors contribute character to my whisky experiences; whether you are visiting a distillery in Scotland, selling a bottle to it’s new owner or

enjoying a dram with family and friends.”

While there are other women with the prestigious title, Siona says, “Although women remain the minority, they are being represented very well in all sectors of the whisky world.

It is often said within the community, it is not about men or women but simply who is best for the job”.

The whisky industry is part of Siona’s family—her dad, Michael Fraser Milne, is a Master of the Quaich awarded by the Global Scotch whisky society Keepers of the Quaich in April 2019. To have both a father (Master) and a daughter (Keeper) with these titles is a rare occurrence in the industry.

“Being recognised in the same realm alongside my father really is the most treasured experience. The whisky community is made up of

many different elements, corporate, private and family all play their parts, and we wouldn’t have an industry in such good heart without all of these elements,” says Siona. “I guess that for us reflecting the family element, we can only hope that th ese titles h o pefu ll y represent a continuity of effort, representation and commitment on behalf of the New Zealand whisky consumer.”

When asked what her favourite whisky is, Siona says she doesn’t play favourites and looks out for something off the beaten track and maybe a bit quirky. “I am often reminded that the classics are classic for a reason. I do however find that company and environment can ultimately have the best effect on your whisky drinking experience.”

OLYMPIC OPPORTUNITY

ANNABEL’S EDUCARE & 3 YR & 4 YR OLD KINDERGARTENS 12-16 South Tce, Piper Benbow is hoping to represent New Zealand at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Even though 19-year-old local shooter Piper Benbow recently gained a quota place for team NZ to attend the 2024 Olympic Games, she’s pragmatic about her placement and says it doesn’t necessarily mean she will be the person going to the Olympics.

“I need to compete in a World Cup event or Olympic qualifying round and attain qualifying scores to be eligible for selection by the New Zealand Olympic Committee,” says Piper. “I have two opportunities to do that, one being in January in Cairo, Egypt and the other in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in April 2024.”

If selected, she will be shooting in the Woman’s 3 Position event shot with a .22 calibre rifle with targets at 50 metres. “This involves shooting in a standing position, kneeling and prone (laying down).”

To attain the level of performance she needs, Piper’s schedule will go from casual to fully structured.” I will need to ramp up my training to four or five times a week to be in good form to just qualify. If selected as an Olympic athlete, I would be competing for New Zealand in the Paris Olympics.”

Piper says she was a bit surprised to gain an Olympic quota place at the Oceania continental championships.

“Before my match and final, I didn’t know there was a second quota place up for grabs, but I am very happy to be granted the quota place. I have been shooting a long time and the Olympics are something you aspire to as a

young shooter. The realisation that there may be a way to get there is pretty exciting.”

Being entirely self-funded makes it hard while trying to work full time and train plus with plans to start university next year, Piper has a challenge ahead of her.

“Finding funding for individual athletes isn't an easy task and I will need to attract funding in order to pursue the Paris Olympics.”

Piper is not alone as she has one teammate from the Oceania Continental Championships who also secured an Olympic quota place for New Zealand in Men’s 3 Position. She says he faces the same difficulties she does. “We have shot together and against each other through secondary school nationals and been at Junior Development Squad camps, so it would be great if we could both secure these Olympic team spots and represent our country together.”

Having her family travel with her would mean a lot to Piper, especially her dad who has been her coach since she was nine years old. “I would love to have him with me to experience it together, but it would all depend on what sort of funding I could get as most of these trips are anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 to travel back and forth and there are significant costs in ammunition and equipment to shoot at this level.”

Aside from the funding dilemma, Piper says she’s keen to get more international competition experience.

“Shooters are highly skilled

and competitive like other sports people, but they are people with different lives and experiences and the coaching staff and competition judges are the same,” she says. “To meet all these people, get to know some of them more—we follow them all over the world on social media—would be a wonderful experience.

Representing your country is something special and I would really like to do that and see what I am capable of.”

Many older people in our community are lonely or isolated as they receive few or no regular visitors. Research shows that social isolation and loneliness experienced by older people can lead to serious health issues.

Our Visiting Service is a befriending service that provide regular contact for older people who would like more company. Our visitors are volunteers who are keen to spend time with an older person for about an hour each week enjoying conversation, shared interests and activities.

The Visiting Service matches older people who are lonely or socially isolated with volunteers who are keen to spend time getting to know them. The volunteers are police-checked and trained and spend about an hour each week sharing conversation and activities with their older friend.

Most visits take place in the client’s home, but some may involve going out together.

Matches are made carefully, based on personality, shared interests, cultural needs, and location. The matches are regularly reviewed to make sure they are mutually beneficial to both parties. Our volunteers visit for about one hour per week on a regular basis. We ask for a minimum commitment of at least one year.

To become an Age Concern Visitor, we ask you to attend an interview, provide referees, complete a police check, and participate in our orientation programme.

MAKING DARFIELD PEST FREE Luke Simpson is the founder of Predator Free Darfield. He says that after many years enjoying the outdoors and seeing what was right on the back doorstep, he decided Darfield needed an organised approach to become pest free.

“The govt established a plan for the country to be predator free by 2050. Mass poisoning in townships targeting pests can't be done.

Controlled trapping is the answer,” says Luke. “And without anything occurring in our town officially, I decided to start a group.”

Asked if Darfield had a pest problem, Luke’s answer is a direct “yes”. He says every town has a predator problem.

“This can be in the form of rats, which arrived here with early settlers. We have three species of rats within this country, none are native.”

Mu stelids (stoats an d weasels) are a national problem and are an invasive species that eat native insects and lizards as well as birds’ eggs right out of the nest.

“Because our town is rural and agriculture is so close by, there's a high chance that

With water races being directly in the township, both the Norway rat and Ship rat are great swimmers, which means there are multiple areas where they live and breed.

“McHugh’s plantation is a wonderful community asset for our township. It's known that possu ms frequent this plantation and possums often

have been seen in properties on the western end of town.

Possums can spread TB and this disease could decimate local farms.”

And as much as hedgehogs appear cute, Luke says they’re destructive towards ground nesting birds in riverbeds.

“They eat anything that moves including lizards and geckos.”

Luke says Malvern councillor Lydia Gliddon has been instrumental in setting up the December 6 workshop being held at the Darfield Library at 6pm. “In time, as we grow as a trapping group other help will come in the form of funding from conservation trusts and grants. On November 21, Darfield Garden Club members visited two beautiful gardens in West Melton. The first was the garden of Helen and Brian Coker and their Stoneycrop garden. Although a fairly new garden being only nine years old, it was a magnificent garden with trees, rhododendrons, beautiful peonies and so many treasures hidden amongst the borders and sweeping lawns. The vegetable garden was very impressive also with boxed gardens growing very healthy-looking vegetables.

The second garden of Sally Jenkins and Grahame Kerr was an established garden of 25 years and members enjoyed rambling the extensive lawns and taking in the beauty of the very well-manicured lawns. The Cercis Canadensis, Forest Pansy trees, were a highlight. A colourful, peaceful garden full of colour, scents, and beauty. Roses were in full bloom. Members enjoyed an afternoon tea under the veranda.

A bus trip to Peel Forest in December is planned to enjoy the open day and view the Mt Peel lilies. A full year’s programme is in place for 2024.

WATCH YOUR WATER USE THIS SUMMER The hot weather is coming and it’s time to make sure we’re being smart with our water use and make sure we don’t run dry this summer.

With El Niño here NIWA is forecasting a hot, dry, windy summer for Selwyn, so residents are reminded to use water wisely through simple habits that help your garden, save you money and help keep water flowing for everyone without water restrictions.

Now is the time to get into good habits, Council Acting Executive Director Infrastructure and Property Murray England says.

“Everyone has a part in making sure we have enough water throughout summer.

With the winds we’ve had things are drying out fast, but the good news is there’s lots of simple things we can all do that are good for your garden, the environment, your wallet, and the wider community. Things like watering efficiently and using the water clock to water outside of peak times, it all adds up to a better summer for everyone.”

Tips for saving water at home: • Skip some days watering to keep your plants strong. Water your garden and lawn every few days rather than every day. Watering every day encourages roots to develop at the surface, making them more vulnerable to hot dry spells.

• Water for shorter. For example, watering for three 5-minute intervals over a couple of hours lets the soil absorb more water than watering for 15 minutes continuously.

• Use a watering can on your garden. It uses less water and gives you more control to water at the roots, where the plants need the water to grow strong - not on the leaves.

• Water what needs it. Your driveway, footpath, or buildings don't need watering. Consider not watering your berm or your lawn too - let it die off during summer to save money on your water rates and wear and tear on your lawn mower.

• Mulch or cover. Covering the soil with mulch or organic matter keeps moisture in the soil, protects roots from sun and wind and reduces weeds.

• Check for leaks. Inspect hoses and taps.

Voting is now open in the Malvern Community Board by-elections.

Electoral Officer Anthony Morton has confirmed today that just over 6800 voter packs have been mailed to the electors enrolled in the Hawkins and Tawera subdivisions of the community board area and that residents in those

areas should look out for their packs to arrive over the next four or five days.

Brian DONNELLY My community involvement and initiatives include being a Malvern Community Patrol member, instigating the Sheffield and Waddington bus shelters, working on the Waddington Rd native planting project, and more recently instigating the Sheffield domain bike track.

I started a local bike group called the Waddington Wanderers that gets out and about most weekends and I’m also part of a group working in conjunction with St Johns to restore the old Waddington school. My interests include being an inaugural member of the Malvern Writers Cafe and I’m a keen musician.

Why should you vote me onto the Malvern Community Board? I don’t have all the answers, but I do have the time, drive, and commitment. It’s also not just about me, it’s about you, the communities that make up this district. It’s about what you want, what you need, and how can we work together to achieve those goals.

Communities need strong representation and, if elected, I offer my commitment and my pledge to advocate strongly on your behalf.

Rob LAWRENCE Judi and I have lived in Darfield for nearly 40 years. My work has many interesting career paths: salmon aquaculture, vet management, business development and innovation. Fifteen years at the Chamber of Commerce as Callaghan Innovation’s Regional Business Partner, I retired in June 2020.

Judi followed a career in teaching secondary classes at Middle Grange school. We attend the Darfield Baptist Church.

Committed to helping to make the local community a better place for all, I have served Malvern past and present. We have serious challenges in our world, and many are here in NZ. Negative disruption and increasing divisiveness are more common. Integrity and respect for others has lost prominence.

I have developed skills from the experiences in my work opportunities that add value to the activities and organizations past and present. I am standing to use those skills for making our community a better place, including listening to others carefully, seeking positive and productive solutions, sharing my infectious enthusiasm for life and heritage, and committed to respect and integrity of others.

John VERRY I live in Darfield and look forward to being one of the two Hawkins Subdivision representatives on the Malvern Community Board. I will take your views to the Board and contribute to Darfield and neighbouring communities being self-sufficient and sustainable, providing the services and facilities that support people of all ages.

I will listen to your views, providing strong representation on the Community Board. Having worked at different Council’s, I know how to make sure that your views are discussed by the Board, so decisions can be made that to improve what we have and enjoy in our community.

I have experience in senior roles in education. Experience as a lawyer at District Councils and legal adviser for Honiara City Council in the Solomon Islands.

I have a Master of Education and Master of Laws and experience in working with committees, community consultation and engagement and dispute resolution. I have good communication, management and problem-solving skills and a strategic thinker who gets things done.

I have attended Probus events, U3A, Darfield Community Patrol, the community garden and lawn bowls.

If elected I will be out and about in the community, supporting local events and projects and look forward to regular meetings with different community groups and people so I can keep in touch and raise issues with the Board. Phil FREEMAN I have lived in Hororata for 25 with my wife and four children. I own and run an engineering business in Hororata and am actively involved volunteering in the Malvern Community. I am Vice Chair of Go Hororata with my main role being to work with the Council ensuring the community has input into the management of the Hororata Domain. I have been Club Captain of Windwhistle Winter Sports Club, President of the Selwyn rugby club and involved with organising all the Hororata events. I was on the Board of Trustees for the Hororata School for nine years. I am interested in representing Malvern to ensure that our large rural district has a voice within Council. I am committed to being the link between Council and community. I want to find a way forward for the newly formed residents committees working with Council. Vicky FROST My principal residence is within the Tawera Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area. Hi, I’m standing for the Tawera CB position as I feel strongly that the townships and small communities benefit from a strong voice at Council.

Several years ago, I retired from Corrections, having served 28 years, and having had many roles, including as a volunteer member of the Post Incident Response Team for nine years, Trainer of Corrections Officers, Facilitator for Youth offenders, Project Manager and Manager of a Drug Treatment Unit, etc. My qualifications include Adult Teaching Certificate, Counselling Certificates, Incident Management (CIMS 2).

Andrew WELSH Hello. I am standing for the Malvern Community Board in the upcoming election because I have a strong desire to serve the wider community and I want to add to making Selwyn District a better place to live, work and play.

I live in Lake Coleridge Village with my partner Victoria and our German Shepherd Fred; we love the Canterbury High Country, the people, and endless opportunities that the district has to offer.

My focus is on sensible spending, accountability and ensuring that the voice of small communities is heard, acknowledged, and valued by the Selwyn District Council.

I understand the frustrations that small communities have over the lack of local representation with local authorities; my aim is to work to ensure these voices are heard.

YOUNG ACHIEVER’S WIN AT COURTENAY After missing out on the award last year, Amelia Ridgen didn’t give up. This year saw her win the prestigious 2023 Matson & Allan Bayleys Real Estate Outstanding Young Achievers Award.

Amelia’s love of agriculture has driven her to become involved with Young Farmers, through competitions and participation. She also walks in her dad, John’s, footsteps, who also won the award many years ago.

In her application for the Award she says she is proud of what she has achieved through Young Farmers and that the club has supported and pushed her from strength to strength over the last year.

Her achievements are many including coming second two years in a row in the Tasman Junior Young Farmer of the Year Final, 2021 and 2022; winner of the Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in 2022; 2023 recipient of the Lincoln Young Farmers Club grant in recognition of her personal development efforts over the year and to support costs incurred by opportunities she has taken that will benefit herself and the club in future; Lincoln Young Farmers Club ‘Most Improved Leader’ award for 2023; elected as secretary for the club for 2024; and member of the Tasman regional final organizing committee for 2024.

RECORDS SET AND BROKEN The southerly blast at the end of the week did not deter sheep breeders and farmers from bringing their stock to Courtenay Show last Saturday in support of president and sheep convenor, Warwick Seaton. A well-known farmer in the district, Warwick’s friends donated a record 70 gift lambs to the show!

The sheep pens were also full to bursting with top quality stud sheep. For the first time in many years the Texel breed took up two rows, more than any other breed in the show.

LOCAL INPUT INTO ICONIC PLAYGROUND Curle Contracting has been busy over the last few months working on exciting new playground at Timaru’s Caroline Bay. The old playground, built c1970, had well and truly seen better days and the bright new playground will cater for lots of ages, sizes, abilities, and stages with over 40 play

pieces.

Jack Curle, playground installation foreman, says, “Working on the Cplay project has been such a privilege for the Curle Contracting team to be a part of. From when we first started the dismantlement of the old playground back in March to the end of October putting together the finial

pieces of play equipment. The new playground is such an asset for Caroline Bay. We’re proud to have been a helping hand and can’t wait for the future generations to enjoy.”

The playground will be formally opened to the public on December 10.

DARFIELD BOWLS NEWS Darfield Bowling Club has had a run of successes over the last few weeks with the Men's Fours team of Gavin Lea, Ray Hunt, Peter Redfern and Craig Kittelty winning the Malvern area Fours competition.

A very close second place by one end was Ashley Paul, Bob Shorter, Graham Rowe and John Quigley.

Last weekend was the Mitchell Cup which is held every year between West Melton Club and Darfield. Darfield had a resounding victory to retained

the Cup for another year.

Four players in the Club were selected to represent Canterbury in the Southern Quadrangular to be held in Temuka next weekend. Wayne Hamilton an d Bronwyn Hamilton for the U5s men and women’s teams. Steve Glassey and Hazel Littlejohn for the senior teams.

West Melton Gymnastics Club recently had their annual prize giving celebration with over 150 families attending. Head Coach Cindy Miller says the children were excited to be receiving awards and to see who won the shiny trophies.

The Club had a busy year moving into a new building at 2/10 Cockburn Lane, Rolleston. This has given the gymnasts, trampolinists and coaches more room and more equipment to teach and build upon the already talented children in the club.

The coaching team has also grown, especially the youth coach team. “We believe it is very important to give back to the community and producing and teaching coaches within your club is key. We have a strong group of well skilled and talented youth coaches in our club, and we are so excited for new classes and opportunities for them next year.”

The Club also opened a satellite club in Darfield at the Darfield Community Centre.

Cindy says this has been welcomed with open arms from the community. “We are so lucky to have support from Selwyn and the Malvern district communities and look forward to expanding our classes in the future,” says Cindy.
