HORORATA PARISH SPRING FAIR The annual Labour Day Hororata Parish Spring Fair saw a large crowd enjoy a good spirited community event on a beautiful Hororata day. “This is an important event for the Parish as it helps fund pastoral care in our community but equally it is a great affordable family day out that brings many people together” said committee member Nicola Hardy. “It is also a chance for locals to have a spring clean and we were donated some amazing items for our White Elephant Stall and Country Auction. Te Huanui’s November exhibition “Artweek Favourites” highlights a range of popular works and artists from the 2022 Darfield Artweek exhibition with mediums from scrimshaw to pressed flowers by artists Karlena Lewin, Annika Mäenpää, Gus Milne, Diana NicholsonPlank, Sophie Risuleo, Katie Shand and Brenda Visser. Karlena Lewin’s art career started 15 years ago with a nail art business that featured in Nail Pro Magazine. A move to country life in 2014 opened the opportunity to explore different forms of art, igniting a love for watercolour and mixed media. Annika Mäenpää is a figurative artist from Finland currently living and working in Christchurch. She has been working as an artist and art tutor in New Zealand since 2021. She is currently working mainly as a figurative artist with digital art as her chosen medium. Gus Milne is a scrimshander based in Christchurch. Gus began teaching himself scrimshanding, (no-one teaches the art form) and began collecting old whale’s teeth from auctions, second hand and antique stores. Gus works

exclusively on up-cycled ivory piano keys, extinct mammoth ivory and whale’s teeth, sourced sustainably. Diana Nicholson-Plank works in mixed media, acrylics and oils, her extensive technical ability partnered with her willingness to allow her subconscious and sense of fun to run free - results in artworks both unique & evocative. Sophie Risuleo has always been passionate about illustrations. Her childhood dream was to draw pictures for children’s books. Sophie enjoys playing with pencils and brushes bringing to life colourful and mischievou s ch arac ters, especially New Zealand birds. Katie Shand, a local resident of Kirwee, is the talent behind Elm & Son Floral Studio. She's an artist with a deep love for preserving the fleeting beauty of nature. Katie's love for her local area is reflected in her work, incorporating local flora into her creations, and paying homage to Kirwee and the surrounding area. Bren da Visser lear ned patchwork, quilting and embroidery from her mother and grandmothers as a teenager. They were traditional

in their methods and so was Brenda for many years. Part time work allowed her time to try more adventurous, less traditional styles and to teach workshops, mostly in fabric painting and printing. “Artweek Favourites” runs from Friday, 27 October through to Thursday, 30 November.

Gus Milne is a scrimshander, a term for a person who creates carved or coloured designs on ivory. His delicate artwork features on ivory piano keys, mammoth ivory, and whale’s teeth.

Dear Editor, As I was unable to work out how to make a submission regards the proposed changes to rural speeds when I tried, perhaps councillors might read a letter to the editor. "I received the Rural Speed Limited Discussion proposal at work and read the document. The idea of lowering speeds to enhance road safety makes sense, especially variable speed limits around schools. What I couldn't see anywhere, was a economic impact statement on the cost of lowering the speed limits. There was a suggestion on the cost of providing new speed circles as being a lot of money, but that is going to be tiny when compared with the ongoing cost to local businesses and residents. The discussion document suggests "Reduced speeds may have a minor impact on journey times" so let's investigate that? A charge out rate per staff member and vehicle of $120 an hour would be reasonable. That's $2 a minute. Looking at average drive times between business locations, lets say a tradie took on average 3 minutes longer at slower average speeds district wide, so that is $6.00 per call-out or trip. How many is reasonable in a day? Some use far more, but lets say the average trade vehicle did five calls, material pick-ups, or product deliveries a day, every working day. $2 x 3 minutes

longer x 5 calls per day, x 5 days a week = $150 a week per vehicle extra to be charged out. For how many weeks a year? Let's just say 45 weeks ... that's $6,750 per vehicle per year. FigureNZ suggests that in 2022 there were approx 7929 businesses operating in the Selwyn District. If each of these businesses had just one vehicle driving round the Selwyn District each day that's roughly $53 million dollars more to be charged out annually, which has to recovered from the rate payers by increasing costs. I know many will do less calls than this, but consider how many your courier drivers, milk tanker operators, and transport companies make a day? And how many companies have fleets of vehicles? I believe my guesstimate is probably low, but I'm trying to suggest a fair average. Lowering the speed limits to achieve an impossible goal of zero accidents has a massive economic cost that simply is being ignored. It's easy to sit at a desk at council and make such massive changes when you aren't responsible for earning any of the money to pay wages, but on behalf of all the businesses in Selwyn, I am suggesting that the economic ramifications in this deserves consideration". OLD BATTERIES RECYCLED FOR CASH During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic when traditional fundraising events were cancelled, Warwick Wilson undertook a commendable initiative to collect old batteries in the Malvern area. This initiative not only contributed to environmental sustainability but also served as an alternative source of funding, given the economic constraints imposed by the pandemic. Warwick recognised the need to adapt to the changing circumstances brought about by the pan demic. As traditional fundraising events became unfeasible, he saw an

opportunity to organise a collection drive for old batteries. The aim was twofold: to support local initiatives and raise funds while also promoting responsible battery disposal and recycling. Initially, estimates indicated that the collection would yield between 12 to 13 tonnes of old batteries. However, thanks to the tremendous Lions members response, the final collection surpassed all expectations, resulting in an impressive 16 tonnes of old batteries. A special mention goes to Sam Bell, whose dedicated efforts led to the collection of old

batteries from every farm in the Rakaia Gorge area. Sam's commitment to this initiative played a vital role in its success. At the outset of the collection drive, the price for old batteries stood at 25 cents per kilogram. However, the decision was made to store the batteries until such time as the price was more favourable. The price eventually increased to 55 cents per kilogram and the call was made to let them go. This increase in the price per kilogram significantly boosted the funds generated by the collection drive, pr ovidin g mu c h -n eeded financial support for local initiatives. The Malvern Lions express their gratitude to Farmlands and PGG Wrightson for their collaboration and support. These organisations played a pivotal role as drop-off points for the old batteries and helped make this initiative a success. A marquee erected in the Halkett Church grounds on Friday, October 13 (an omen perhaps) for the Sunday 150th celebrations had to be taken down on Saturday morning in the face of the Nor -west gale. However, it was back up by 7am Sunday morning due to the diligence of Penny McKay and her team. This was the only hitch in what turned out to be a great occasion where around 150 people of all ages from as far away as Upper Hutt and Gore

celebrated the 150-year sesquicentennial of the Church. The Church service, relayed to the overflow in the marquee by Hope Hornby technical gurus, gave everyone the opportunity to sing well known hymns to the new organ/ keyboard expertly played by Margaret Kitto. The lessons were read by previous ministers of Halkett, Strathearn Lawrey and Murray Talbot. Current Pastor Mark Ambundo lead the service and

introduced the Very Rev Hamish Galloway, who until very recently was the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and is well known to the community. Hamish went on to emphasise how important it was for communities to honour the past and the families that support local churches and encourage the ensuing generations to follow in their footsteps. At the end of the service everyone congregated in the marquee for the cutting of the cake by Betty Henderson, the oldest member of the Halkett congregation, and Malcolm Calder standing in for his sister, Helen Pearce. Mark read messages of best wishes from previous ministers Mark Richardson and Jordan Redding and one from Helen Pearce. Alastair Nicol announced that he will be updating the history of the Halkett Charge, originally complied by Joyce D ave y for th e 125th anniversary. BACK IN OFFICE by Nicola Grigg MP I am thrilled to be able to write this column, re-elected as your Member of Parliament. From all over the country, New Zealanders have reached for hope and have voted for change. In Selwyn, almost 20,000 voters have placed their trust in the National Party – a whopping 50 per cent of the party vote, and almost 27,000 of you placed your trust in me – the second highest candidate vote in the country. I am humbled, and grateful – and I want to thank every single one of you who put your faith in us, and voted for us. The ability for Chris Luxon to form a government is largely thanks to the huge party vote delivered by electorates across the South

Island, with Selwyn being among the strongest seats for National. That said though, we had an incredible showing across New Zealand, and I am looking forward to getting to work with an energetic caucus, under some incredibl y inspiring leadership. I am very proud of the positive campaign National ran, we focussed on the big issues that really matter to New Zealanders, rather than playing personality politics. Here in Selwyn, the thousands of people I’ve connected with over the past couple of years have made it abundantly clear that the cost of living, crime, healthcare, and education are the top issues for them. Once the special votes are accounted for and a coalition

formed, parliament is likely to resume in the middle of November. The agenda will be packed with several urgent repeals we have committed to making – such as the three waters reform, the new RMA, fair pay agreements and the disastrous polytechnic mega merger. Also high on the priority list is arming the police and judiciary with the tools they need to crack down on crime by bringing back the three strikes laws and giving police the powers to come down hard on gangs. There is much to be done but I am excited and energised by the challenges ahead. New Zealand has voted for change. You have given us the mandate to take New Zealand forward.

DONATE PINK FOR CANCER The two biggest events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month are hitting Canterbury next week – the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal and Pink Ribbon Walk. On Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October, 10,000 volunteers will hit the streets of Canterbury for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal, which raises vital funds for breast cancer research, education, and patient support. Thousands of Cantabrians are also gearing up for an epic Sunday stroll for a good cause on Sunday, October 29 for the Christchurch Pink Ribbon Walk in aid of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Tickets are still available but selling fast.

Around 2,000 pinked-up participants will lace up their walking shoes for a five- or 10 -kilometre charity fundraising walk around North Hagley Park. The Foundation’s chief executive, Ah-Leen Rayner, says the charity is expecting record numbers at the event. “The Pink Ribbon Walk is such a special event where Kiwis affected by breast cancer, their whānau and friends come together in a great show of force against this devastating disease. We’re calling on more Cantabrians to join us because the money raised through the walk keeps our vital work going.” “We’re also asking everyone in the region to show some love by donating to our Pink Ribbon Street Appeal. As a charity that doesn’t receive

The Springfield Toy Library (STL) has a mission to bring its community together while learning through play. The toy centre, based in Sheffield, wants to be a safe place that parents and caregivers can bring their preschool children to meet, have a coffee and play together President Kirsty Wilde says, “We know it can feel isolating living rurally. We started our event called Tunes & Toys with an aim to invite nonmembers to join us. This gives everyone an opportunity to see what the Toy Library does, and whether signing up is right for their family.” Tunes & Toys is on every Wednesday at 16 Railway Terrace with the Toy Library session from 9.30-10am, music in the hall from 10-10.30am, and coffee and play from 10.30-11am. “At Tunes & Toys we sing, dance, wave ribbons and play with kids instruments next door in the Sheffield Hall. Then we bring out some of our favourite toys for the kids to play with, along with refreshments for both kids and adults. Sometimes we bring out our parachute or bubble machine!” Kirsty says they’ve had a great turnout to these sessions so far and encourage anyone considering attending Tunes & Toys or joining Toy Library to pop in for a no-obligation session with the group. TM Dance World dancers were thrilled to be back at Whitebait Media studio with their second live performance on WHAT NOW TV! WHAT NOW’s theme for the show was ‘Not all superhero’s need capes’. Fortunately for the junior performance team, TM Dance had a superhero dance that fitted the theme perfectly. Ten excited girls had an early start on the day, meeting at the studio in Christchurch at 7am for rehearsal followed by their performance at 9:15am. BY-ELECTION CANDIDATES CONFIRMED Nominations closed last week with eight candidates putting their names forward, seeking a place on the Malvern Community Board. The Malvern Community Board by-elections received three nominations for one vacancy in the Hawkins Subdivision and four nominations for one vacancy in the Tawera Subdivision. The strong turnout of candidates was a positive sign for the community. Mayor Sam Broughton says, “It’s encouraging to see so many people looking to get involved and represent their community. Having a good range of candidates means Malvern residents will get a good say in who represents them on the board”. Competing for the Hawkins Subdivision is Brian Donnelly, Rob Lawrence, and John Verry. The Tawera Subdivision sees Phil Freeman, Vicky Frost, Michelle Johnson, Andrew Welsh, and Bill Woods competing for the remaining seat.
