Local Darfield girl Maddy Judd
(14) has been a force to be reckoned with on the rugby field since she was eight yearsold.
Maddy first started playing rugby for Sheffield Sharks in the Under 8 grade. At the start of Year 9, she went to boarding school at Craighead in Timaru and played in the Under 15 as well as playing for SheffieldUnder 13teams.
Maddy was recognised for her talent and strength, and at the end of the first term this year, while in Year 10, she transferred to Christchurch Girls High determined to play in the1stXVteam.
She achieved what she set out to do and had a successful season with her school team, playing in the number one (prop) position. The team won the Mid Canterbury 2023 Under 18 Girls Series in July. They also recently won the Miles Toyota Final against Avonside Girls 74-5 and on August 19 played in the South Island final against Southland, winning 27-12, which qualified the team for theNZSS National
1st XV Top four, where they placedthirdin thecountry.
Maddy also plays club rugby for High School Old Boys, with a change of position to number eight, and her team won the senior girls U17 pool B section and she was named most valuable player of the year. She was also selected to play for Canterbury U18 in the South Island Tournament on

A lot of time and dedication is required to compete at this level and Maddy is having to do early morning runs, team trainings, specialised position trainings and look after her own well-being.
Maddy says the time and effort is worthwhile and has enjoyed being part of supportive teams who encourage each other to give ittheir all.
“This season has been the most enjoyable learning experience for me. I have been in an environment that has provided great culture,
coaches with a wide range of experience and getting the best advice from some of our Canterbury/Black Fern players. Being at the Top 4 was another highlight as it allowed me to playagainstsomequalityrugby players and has shown me the commitment required to achieve goals and given me the best mindset of moving forward nextyear.
“It was an amazing feeling pulling on the red and black Canterbury jersey for the first time”.
I would also like to take this opportunitytothankallmypast and present coaches and supporters, especially my family.”
The team at the News look forward to following her future endeavours.

When she auditioned for the role in June this year, she was surprised and delighted to get a call back and offer of not justonerole butthreerolesas a Hobgoblin, a Rosebush, and aVillager.
Emilia’s mum Annette says, “Emilia is super excited. It’s her first large scale show. The young performer’s roles include speaking, acting, singing, or dancing.
“It’s great experience for her, she is learning a lot,” Annette says. “It is a bit of effort getting her to and from rehearsals in Christchurch though.”

POOL’S FUTURE IN QUESTION
Greendale School’s Board is considering the long-term sustainability of the school’s swimming pool. The Board is reaching out to gather feedback on the viability of keepingthepooloperating.
The pool is currently closed for use due to a leak and an unsafe pool building. For the pool to be safe and up to standard, it needs the leak repaired and the pool resurfaced, the building either removed or replaced, changing rooms and toilets upgraded or replaced, the heating system upgraded, and a new sunproofcover.
The Board says the pool requires commitment from the
community with regular water quality management and training to ensure the pool continuously meets all health and safety standards, ongoing maintenance and regular cleaning, including the pool vacuumedweekly.
In 2020, (before COVID), the Board spent up to $4,000 per year on the pool. Funding of $1,000 was received from Selwyn District Council and income from keysales in 2020 was$565.
To make the pool viable long term, a high number of keys will need to be purchased and two to three people trained to test the pool water. Those trained in all aspects of pool
TE REO MARKED IN NZ CHINESE LANGUAGE WEEK
The significance of Te Reo Māori in New Zealand is recognised by the New Zealand Chinese Language Week Trust, which provides its resources in three languages
– Te Reo, Chinese, and English. Chinese Language Week finishes on September 23, 2023.
Language gives an insight into the culture and builds community, NZCLW Trust chair Jo Coughlan says. “The Trust encourages New Zealanders to give Chinese a go, because it benefits New Zealanders and our country to be able to communicate with others, but we also use Te Reo in our resources because it is one of the official languages of our country and it is important to recognisethat.”
The NZCLW Trust distributes a tri-lingual children’s book free of charge to all schools and district libraries throughout New Zealand, with more than 3500 being sent out this year.
“Librarians tell us that the book is hugely popular. Readers recognise themselves in the stories, and the three different languages mean the book is useful for many differentaudiences.”
The book is also available in audio form online in the three languages. This year’s book, Weka’s Waiata, tells the story of four little chicks preparing a song for their grandparents’ visit. It is the sixth year a trilingual picture book has been published. Details on how to buy a copy of the book can be foundon www.nzclw.com www.nzclw.com www.nzclw.com.
care, and all school families and engaged community members would be put on a cleaning/maintenanceroster. The Board says it can commit to a one-off amount of approximately $20,000 to begin the process of getting the pool back up to standard. And while the school has a small fund from donations given at the jubilee celebration, which could be included, the Board says that on its own it wouldn’t be able to contribute anything further to the restoration process of the changing rooms and toilets for at least five to 10 yearsintothefuture. Feedback from the local communitywill be collated this week to determine the future ofthepool.

We wish him well for his future musical endeavours!
The event was also tutor and musical director, Pauline

REVERSE MORTGAGE
IS A REVERSE MORTGAG IS REVERSE MORTGAG MORTGAGE THE ANSWER TO FREEING UP SOME E THE TO UP SOME E EQUITY AND ENJOYING EQUITY ENJOYING A BETTER QUALITY OF A BETTER OF LIFE? LIFE? LIFE?
Reverse mortgages are a tool, offered by select financial providers, for seniors in New Zealand seeking to unlock some of the equity in their existing homes. Whilst a reverse mortgage offers certain benefits, they also come with risks that warrant careful consideration before signing on the dotted line and committing to such an arrangement.
We regularly assist with a wide variety of financing arrangements and summarise a few of the benefits and risks associated with a reverse mortgageasfollows:
Benefits
1. Supplemental Income: Reverse Mortgages provide a means for seniors to access the equity locked up in their existing homes, offering what can be a lump sum payment, or access to the equivalent of an overdraft facility, to support the borrower’s retirement needs and lifestyle.
2. Homeownership Retention: Borrowers can continue to live in their homes without the obligation of needing to make
regular loan repayments, thus maintaining their sense of independence and stability. We often see clients using the Reverse Mortgage funds for necessary home maintenance and repairs which allows them to continue living comfortably and safely at home.
3. Flexibility: Funds from a Reverse Mortgage can be used for various purposes, including covering medical expenses, purchasing or maintaining a vehicle, home renovations, holiday or debt consolidation.
Risks RisksRisks
1. Accruing Interest: Unlike traditional mortgages, the interest on a Reverse Mortgage compound over time. This can lead to a significant debt that erodes the equity in the property.
2. Reduced Inheritance: The loan balance, together with accrued interest, must be repaid when the borrower dies, or the property is sold. This will reduce the inheritance left for the borrower’s beneficiaries.
3. Eligibility Criteria: Reverse Mortgages are generally only available to seniors, and specific eligibility requirements must be met – meaning access
can be limited.
4. Long Term Commitment: Borrowers are committed to the Reverse Mortgage for an extended period, which may not align with their evolving financial needs or lifestyle choices.
There is no such thing as free money! Prospective Reverse Mortgage borrowers are required to consult with legal advisers before proceeding. We work with our clients to ensure careful evaluation of the benefits and risks, and what other options may be available, to determine whether the Reverse mortgage alignswith the borrower’slong -termfinancialrequirements. Given our expertise in this area we can assist in the decision-making process, prior to an application being made, to ensure that the potential benefits outweigh the associated risks and longertermconsequences.

SHOOTING EXPERIENCE
Locals in the Villa Maria College team competed alongside Darfield High School
at the Secondary Schools Inter -Island Target shooting competition recently. The Villa Maria College team are all locals who shoot at the Darfield range. Darfield High School had two teams entered and both did well. However, it was the Villa team’s first competition and even though they didn’t score highly, they were happy with their scores having only recently started
shooting from the sling in the lastfewmonths.
Thisisthefirsttime VillaMaria has had a team in the event. The matches are held at rangesaroundthecountryand the scores are updated live to the groups at each centre. This year there were teams from Rangiora HS, Darfield HS and Ashburton College competing at Drayton Range in Christchurch.
DARFIELD GUN CLUB
A bit gloomy for this month’s shoot, cloudy with just a hint of a breeze. Twenty-five shooters including four juniors from Darfield High to contest theday’sevents.
20 Single Barrell as the eyeopener, no possibles but 19s for Ron Greatorex and Dave Folley.
Next the 25-target Club Champs and six possibles to shoot off for the trophies including two B graders. And lastly, the 25-target Point Score with a clear winner with 75/75scoredbyLukeJefferis. Afternoon tea was taken before the shoot-offs commenced. Luckily nearly all the contenders were eligible for the same prizes, so a combined shoot-off was held to sort out HOA, A grade, B grade and Veterans with C gradeshootingseparately.

When looking at the farm's environmental footprint, the operation of strip-tilling ticks all the boxes by providing optional fertilising, subsoiling, chip hoeing and seeding all in one single pass.
“You save time and money and will preserve a highyielding soil structure for good seed-to-soil contact, which gives a better plant population. It works by only preparing and fertilizing the soil where the crop is to grow and can provide proof of placementfor your farmplan.”

NEW STEERING GROUP NEEDED
Sustainable land and water use and community beautification projects were the focus of a town hall meeting at Glentunnel Community Centre on September 5. The meeting was well attended, with over 20 locals attending to discuss the potential formation of a new catchment group for the area. Lydia Gliddon, Malvern Councillor, has been championing the project and invited supporting agencies including NZ Landcare Trust, the Selwyn-Waihora Waterzone Committee, Environment Canterbury and MPI On-Farm Support team to give locals an idea of what assistance and funding might be availabletogetstarted.
Lydia presented potential beautification projects as being highly important in the catchment such as Whitecliffs, as they would have the added benefit of increasing biodiversity and green spaces for public use, as well as decreasing water temperature over time. The projects included weed and pest species removal from the Upper Selwyn Riverbank in areas where there is potential for funding to support the project. Lydia told the group that there was a lot of support in place for work like this in the area, and what they were looking for is a supported steering group from the community to make some enduringchange.
NZ Landcare Trust representative Tracey Perkins presented on behalf of the Trust and its services as well as standing in for Kathryn Bates, who was unable to attend. Kathryn, a Whitecliffs local who now lives in Christchurch but remains passionate and connected to the area, initiated the project two years ago with a town hall meeting and a community survey seeking public opinions on the catchment issues.
Tracey says, “Locals are predominantly concerned with water quality and would like the river to be consistently swimmable. They also questioned the trigger point for signs going out and expressed interest in having a water quality scientist come out to the hall and discuss that. It makes sense to have a catchment group in this area, Kathryn has done an impressive amount of groundwork and the number of people who attended indicate there’s a desire for both more information and action. A catchmentgroupwillfacilitatethat”.
“The next steps for the community are to form a steering group to get this off the ground and we’re interested in hearing from anyone who would like to take part in that,” Lydia says. “We are here to support a ‘gumboots up’ approach so that the decisions are made by locals for locals, enabled by supporting organisations wherethey’reneeded”.

BACK ON TRACK!
A great night was had by all recently at the Friends of the Darfield Hospital Fundraising Tournament. Laughter echoed through the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre as 28 teams, each consisting of four enthusiastic locals, took to the indoor bowling mats to raise funds in a fun way for the benefit of the Friends of Darfield Hospital.
Volunteers from the Darfield Indoor Bowls Club and Friends of the Darfield Hospital combined their talents to bring the night together and put the event back on the calendar again, after a Covid related absence of four years. It was a successful evening and the event raised $7,134 via raffle sales, entry fees and donations.
Friends of the Darfield Hospital chairperson Elisabeth
(Elly) May says, “The support from the Darfield Indoor Bowling Club was huge and we enjoyed working alongside them to bring this Tournament toDarfield”.
The Committee plans to use these funds for many little jobs including maintenance at the front entrance way to the hospital as the area needs freshening.
“On behalf of the Friends of the Darfield Hospital, thank you to everyone who has made this tournament possible,” Elly says. “Thanks to all the many sponsors who have sponsored us either with monetary donations or prizes and to all the teams that participated.”
“Congratulations to all our prize winners and to the Committee for all their hard work.”
