RESOLUTIONS

The latest Te Huanui Art Gallery exhibition features a display which is described as photographing stories through detail.

The Resolutions photography exhibition by the Christchurch Women’s Photography Collective explores themes such as colour, mood, culture, nostalgia and beauty from the perspectives of six photographers. These complex notions are brought into focus and are resolved, with a quiet determination through the lens. The techniques and motivation of the photographers are individual, however, they are connected through storytelling and the shared experiences of photography.

Some of the group have created work especially for the exhibition, while others are showing work curated over the ‘Covid Years’. Resolutions opens from 6pm Friday, February 24th and runs until Thursday, March 24th, everyone is welcome to attendtheopening.

She aims to encourage the community towards considering dialogue, tolerance and inclusivity in the faceofadversityandhardship.

With ‘Colours of Colombia’, Janneth wants to highlight the importance of keeping our cultural roots alive and to give the opportunity to the viewer to learn about the positive aspects of her birth country, Colombia, with the hope of reducing the stigma and discrimination associatedwithit.

The Malvern U3A meeting held at the Baptist Church on Friday, February 10th, was fortunate to have Alan Blackburn Alan Blackburn Alan Alan as their guestspeaker.

His talk was titled ‘The Ming Dynasty, a Lens on Today with anEmphasisonPorcelain’.

The dates of the Ming Dynasty are 1368 until 1644, when the last Ming Emperor hung himself from a cherry tree in the ForbiddenCity.

However, theMing Dynasty gave the world some great developments. They started printing and made paper, gunpowder and the magnetic compass.

They extended the Great Wall, which is the portion seen by

most tourists today, and they also extended the Great Canal. Theirmost famous build was the Forbidden City which took twentyyearstocomplete.

Art was very important in the MingDynasty, andthisledtothe making and decoration of Ming porcelain.OriginallycalledChina porcelain when it was shipped back to Europe via the silk route itbecamesimplycalled‘China’.

The porcelain from this period is beautifully decorated and fired to a really high kiln temperature to get the mirror-like glaze on the surface. The colours used werethefamiliarcobaltblueand white, as well as multi-coloured decorations with gold highlights on many of the urns and jugs.

Recurring patterns used were peacocks, peonies and the iconic Chinesedragon.

Riwa Alley Riwa Alley Riwa Alley Riwa Alley (born in Springfield, 1897 - 1987) found favour with the Chinese emperor and brought back Ming porcelain from China. There were some seven crates containing 1,500 pieces which were then donated totheCanterburyMuseum. As always, Alan provided the group with a well-researched, interestingandinformativetalk. We are searching for a talented pasture manager to fill the role of livestock manager on our dairy support block. The role will largely entail stock management, repairs and maintenance, and tractor work, including cultivation and mowing. The farm is located 10 minutes from Darfield, Rolleston, Hororata and Burnham. The role will be a drive-in position.

We are taking over this 180ha block at the end of March, with the successful applicant starting mid-April. The block will be running 300 R1 and R2 heifer replacements, 100 mixed age Jersey bulls, and 100-150 mixed age carryover cows. The livestock manager will be responsible for the management of the youngstock, carryovers and bulls over winter.

The block is fully irrigated, currently with 1 pivot and 3 turborains. A linear will be installed to replace one of the turborains as part of the development program. A man asked his wife what she wanted for her upcoming birthday. “I’d like to be eight again,” she replied, looking in the mirror. On the morning of her birthday he made her a big bowl of Coco Pops and then went to a theme park and made her go on every ride. She staggered out aNer five hours and was taken to McDonalds for a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie with popcorn, soda and M & M’s. Finally they got home and she collapsed into bed.

The husband asked, “Well dear, what’s it like being eight again?” She replied, “I meant my dress size, you idiot!!!!”
