SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE
In March 2022, Crusaders Academy Manager, Aaron Webb ran more than 100km for the Child Cancer Foundation. He was so humbled by how many people came out to support him, that he came up with the idea of turning this into a community wide event in 2023, so everyone could get involved and do their bit.
On January 27th, Rugby and Malvern Parks were buzzing with people supporting the event ‘The Long Run’. The Crusaders Rugby Team are committed to having a positive impact on the community and were humbled to be partnering with the Child Cancer Foundation for The Long Run, helping to raise vital funds for their important work supporting families of children fighting cancer.

A Baton was carried around the course 153 times, with a new person carrying it each lap, emphasising that this event was a team effort! The day saw more than 5,000 laps completed by a wide variety of people. Whilst the running/walking continued throughout the day, there was a coffee cart, food trucks, inflatables and skills and drills for the kids, as well as visits from the Crusaders and Matatū players.
Ex-local Alex Robertson , who is part of the Canterbury NPC Coaching group, and his family took part in this event. His son, Arlan completed a fantastic seven laps and was lucky enough to run the baton round for its 121st lap. Arlan’s mum Hinemoa achieved thirteen laps.
“I was beyond proud of Arlan. This was a very fun and successful event, great cause to support and was an awesome day out for the kids,” commented Hinemoa. Every year, 153 Kiwi kids are diagnosed with cancer. For those kids and their families, diagnosis is the start of a long and difficult journey.
Darfield Premier Cricket

The Oxford-Rangiora team produced arguably their best performance of the season by posting 187/8 from their 45 overs, but it still wasn't enough to beat an, at times untidy, Darfield side last Saturday.
A slow start from the visitors was a risky tactic which seemed to have failed when they were reduced to 46/4. Robbie Foulkes picked up 2 wickets, including the evergreen David Fulton but this brought Lachie
Stove and Gus Mowat together. The pair added 154 runs in a measured partnership where they nudged singles and blasted bad balls. Foulkes was dispatched into the water race by Stove in one massive hit. The ball has probably settled somewhere along Telegraph Road if you want to go and look for it. The golden arm of Ryan Hughes removed Stove and Mowat in sequence, and the rest of the side folded in quick order.
Darfield's only blemishes were their errant bowling of too many wides and at times, sub-standard fielding.

Robbie Foulkes produced a well paced innings of 59 as he and Ryan Hughes (53) took their side to 116/3.

Hughes was particularly rambunctious, scoring over 50% of his runs in boundaries.
Foulkes fell with 6 runs required as Nick Gilbert (30*) and captain Liam Foulkes (6*) took his team to victory.
All senior grades rest for Waitangi Weekend and Darfield Premier return home on February 11th when they host Ohoka in a two-day match.
