ISSUE 1,071 - FRIDAY 3RD FEBRUARY 2023

Page 1

The annual Coast to Coast will take place this year on February 10th - 11th. The race starts on the West Coast, at Kumara Beach and traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing on the East Coast at the New Brighton Beach Pier.

The race is one of the world's longest running multi-sports events, founded in 1983 by Robin Judkins, with only twenty five hardy souls taking part in the first 243km challenge over two days.

Over the years, the number of participants has grown to a peak of close to 1,000 competitors, and the event has expanded its sections to suit all those from professional athletes to weekend warriors.

The One Day race was introduced in 1989 and has the title of the World Multisport Championship, with the top athletes covering the entire course in close to 11 hours. The other end of the field sees some competitors in the Two Day race taking closer to 24 hours.

Competitors leave on foot from Kumara Beach on the West Coast, running 2.2km inland to their bikes. They then follow the Taramakau River to the foothills of the Southern Alps where they switch their bikes for runners and the first true test of the course. The 30.5km run is mainly off trail, with the rocky riverbed often the only direct line up the valley.

Competitors encounter multiple river crossings and an elevation gain of nearly 800m on their way to Goat Pass and the start of the descent.

With the very fastest athletes taking nearly 3 hours, the run is as much a test of coordination and strength as it is outright speed.

A short 15km ride follows before competitors take on the 70km kayak leg on the Waimakariri River. The river section is for many, both the highlight and the crux of the race. The final leg is a 70km bike ride, via South Eyre Road, to the finish at New Brighton Beach. While the One Day athletes complete the distance in a day, the majority of competitors take two days to cover the same course, with an overnight camp at the end of the Mountain Run stage at Klondyke Corner.

COAST TO COAST 2023

….continuedfromfrontpage. This event sees many locals take on the challenge, and some of those, that the team at the ‘News spoke to, are really looking forward to it. Below are a few locals pre-Coast to Coast comments.

Julia Chamberlain #77

(One Day - Individual):

“Growing up in Darfield, it has been a childhood dream to do the One Day Coast to Coast. So, I am really looking forward to it. My lead up to the event has been relatively smooth sailing despite having Covid at Christmas. The support of my family, friends, Topsport Kayaking and work - Tavendale and Partners have helped me to get to the start line, and I can’t thank them enough. Give me a yell out on the course - number 77,” commented Julia.

Lexie Sinclair-Dockerill #589 (Two Day - Individual):

“This year is a big jump from the School group to the Open 18-39 age group. I have had some very fast training runs of the course, so wanting to achieve top ten in that category. We are putting the call out for supporters to park up between the Gorge, South Eyre Road and through to Brighton Beach and cheer me on. It is such a boost and helps me keep going,”

commented Lexie. Scott McIlroy, Blair McIlroy and Ben Wilson #804

(Two Day - 3 Person):

“I have been in a support crew for the last three events. I am looking forward to doing my bit for the team this year in the bike leg. It's such a great event in our backyard,” commented Scott. “We are really excited about the race after the disappointment of it being postponed last year! I’m looking forward to a couple of days adventure with the boys,” commented Ben Wilson.

“I am looking forward to the event, it will be my first time competing, and it’s great to be part of a team. It has taken a lot of training, so I’m hoping all the hard work pays off and looking forward to enjoying a beer with the team after a big two days,” commented Blair McIlroy.

Gordon Thrower and Jocelyn Thrower # 795

(Two Day - Two Person):

“The Coast to Coast race is an iconic event, and as husband and wife, we wanted to have a go together in the Two Day Team category. The race though is just one part of the event. Training is a major part of it as well, and

we have met some awesome characters along the journey,” commented Gordon.

Nicolle Rosewarne #565 (Two Day - Individual):

“I have competed in the team event as the kayaker in 2021, now I’m having a go at the individual event. I really wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and see how far I can push myself, both mentally and physically.

“My father passed away while I was training for the 2022 event that was cancelled due to Covid red alert, and I contemplated cancelling my 2022 entry as I was struggling to train while he was sick, however, he made me promise to him that I would do it, so approximately thirteen months later here I am, hopefully, all goes well on the day! For dad!,” commented Nicole from Kirwee. Best of luck to everyone who is taking on the Coast to Coast.

The Malvern News have compiled a list of those that we know are competing which will be posted on Facebook Groups along with their category and race number.

GYMNASTICS OPEN DAY

The West Melton Gymnastics Club is bringing gymnastics back to Darfield Recreation Centre. Their inaugural Darfield Gymnastics Open Day was held last Saturday and the two hour event was attended by well over a hundred people. Lots of children enjoyed jumping, rolling and swinging around, while the West Melton Gymnastics Club team thoroughly enjoyed meeting and assisting everyone. While it was wonderful to have a big turnout at the Open Day, gymnasts can be reassured that the weekly gymnastics classes

will continue to have small class sizes that West Melton Gymnastics Club is known for. The low gymnast-to-coach ratio ensures each child gets the one on one attention necessary to master the skills.

Term 1 classes will begin on Thursday, February 9th and the Open Day resulted in all after school classes becoming fully booked, while some space remains on Saturday. Due to demand, an additional Preschool Gymnastics class has been added to the timetable for Saturday mornings. With many children

still on their waitlist, the Club are currently working on adding some more capacity to some of the after school classes to include as many as possible in Term 1.

To expand classes further the Club are working to grow their coaching team locally, and would also welcome any assistance with funding some additional gymnastics equipment to further benefit the local children. Please get in touch with West Melton Gymnastics if you are interested in helping at all.

MAKING MUSIC

The Darfield Library was the perfect venue for the inaugural Malvern School of Music ‘Have a Go - Musical Instruments’ session on Saturday, January 28th.

Approximately twenty eight children and fifteen adults showed an interest and had a chance to try out the following instruments; violin, cello, guitar, ukulele, ukulele bass, keyboard, recorder, flute and bagpipe chanter and goose bag (that does actually sound like a goose!). The morning was a great success, with tutors flat out teaching prospective students how to make music from the instruments. Such was the success of the morning the Malvern School of Music are planning on making this an annual event!

On Monday, February 13th, the Darfield Library community room will be the venue for the free Ukulele for Beginners session, for adults interested in learning to play.

The Darfield Ukulele Group (supported by the Malvern School of Music) are keen to

encourage more members to their weekly fun and friendly group. The Beginner's session will cover simple strumming techniques, a few east chords, and you’ll learn to play a simple song. Spare ukuleles will be available, and the first lesson is free. No need to enrol.

For further information please see the advertisement in the Public Notice section of this issue.

LOOK OUT FOR LEARNERS

By now there will be approximately 11,500 Selwyn students travelling back to school again.

That number of learners, which equates to nearly 20 percent of the district’s population, will be biking, walking and scootering on Selwyn’s roads and footpaths. Caregivers are encouraged to practice the safest route for their children to walk or ride to school, and educate them about the risks of crossing roads and driveways. Children should be reminded to stay alert and avoid

distractions like mobile devices and headphones. Motorists are urged to slow down when passing on the roads, as children can be unpredictable. Get into the habit of going 30km/hr past schools and 20km/hr past school buses. Be patient and obey the crossing patrol.

Congestion around school zones can be reduced by dropping back and walking the last part of the journey when taking kids to the school gate. Ensure everyone that needs a helmet has one,

which includes those using scooters. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head trauma by 74 percent.

A range of high vis products are available that make children more visible in all weather conditions. Most schools have high vis items available for free or at a small cost.

Road safety resources for parents and children can be organised through your school or Selwyn District Council by emailing roadsafety@selwyn.govt.nz

DAMAGES TO PROPERTIES

The new year often seems to be a time of movement within the Rental Industry, with some looking for fresh starts in new towns, others upsizing or downsizing depending on where they are in their stage of life, but for whatever the reason it almost always brings something that happens in every house in the country into question - What is damage and what is fair wear and tear?

When a Tenant leaves, the first thing we do is complete a thorough Exit Inspection. This is then compared to the inspection that was completed prior to them moving in and gives us a snapshot of any changes in that time. We must then take into consideration how long has the Tenant lived there. Have they just needed a short term six month lease while their house is being built? Has this been their family home for the last ten years?

Some things are obvious such as, a large hole in the wall or a large red wine stain in the

middle of the living room. Others are not so clear.

New Zealand Tenancy regulations state that - ‘The tenant is not responsible for repairs or damage arising from burglaries, natural events (such as storms, floods and earthquakes), or fair wear and tear.

However, they are responsible to repair to a good standard any damages that have occurred in the home caused by either themselves or by a visitor.’

Sounds simple but wear and tear gets a lot of people confused, so to break it down into a nutshell here are a few examples of what is considered fair wear and tear. Flooring getting worn with age and normal use, or taps and washers getting worn out or leaking.

What is not considered fair wear and tear is things like burn marks or drink stains on carpets, drawing on walls or stains and odours caused by pets. Our advice to tenants is if you have caused damage or feel

there is wear and tear evident that is impacting the property then contact your landlord or property manager as soon as possible and discuss what needs to be done and who is responsible for doing it. Take steps to limit further damage if appropriate, before maintenance or repairs are done. For Landlords, ensure you attend to maintenance requirements promptly as often this will reduce the chance of more damage to your investment in the long term. Both tenants and landlords also have the ability to issue a fourteen days notice to the other party to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner to protect the Tenant's standard of living and the Home Owners Investment. SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE

In March 2022, Crusaders Academy Manager, Aaron Webb ran more than 100km for the Child Cancer Foundation. He was so humbled by how many people came out to support him, that he came up with the idea of turning this into a community wide event in 2023, so everyone could get involved and do their bit.

On January 27th, Rugby and Malvern Parks were buzzing with people supporting the event ‘The Long Run’. The Crusaders Rugby Team are committed to having a positive impact on the community and were humbled to be partnering with the Child Cancer Foundation for The Long Run, helping to raise vital funds for their important work supporting families of children fighting cancer.

A Baton was carried around the course 153 times, with a new person carrying it each lap, emphasising that this event was a team effort! The day saw more than 5,000 laps completed by a wide variety of people. Whilst the running/walking continued throughout the day, there was a coffee cart, food trucks, inflatables and skills and drills

for the kids, as well as visits from the Crusaders and Matatū players.

Ex-local Alex Robertson , who is part of the Canterbury NPC Coaching group, and his family took part in this event. His son, Arlan completed a fantastic seven laps and was lucky enough to run the baton round for its 121st lap. Arlan’s mum Hinemoa achieved thirteen laps.

“I was beyond proud of Arlan. This was a very fun and successful event, great cause to support and was an awesome day out for the kids,” commented Hinemoa. Every year, 153 Kiwi kids are diagnosed with cancer. For those kids and their families, diagnosis is the start of a long and difficult journey.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET

The Oxford-Rangiora team produced arguably their best performance of the season by posting 187/8 from their 45 overs, but it still wasn't enough to beat an, at times untidy, Darfield side last Saturday.

A slow start from the visitors was a risky tactic which seemed to have failed when they were reduced to 46/4. Robbie Foulkes picked up 2 wickets, including the evergreen David Fulton but this brought Lachie

Stove and Gus Mowat together. The pair added 154 runs in a measured partnership where they nudged singles and blasted bad balls. Foulkes was dispatched into the water race by Stove in one massive hit. The ball has probably settled somewhere along Telegraph Road if you want to go and look for it. The golden arm of Ryan Hughes removed Stove and Mowat in sequence, and the rest of the side folded in quick order.

Darfield's only blemishes were their errant bowling of too many wides and at times, sub-standard fielding.

Robbie Foulkes produced a well paced innings of 59 as he and Ryan Hughes (53) took their side to 116/3.

Hughes was particularly rambunctious, scoring over 50% of his runs in boundaries.

Foulkes fell with 6 runs required as Nick Gilbert (30*) and captain Liam Foulkes (6*) took his team to victory.

All senior grades rest for Waitangi Weekend and Darfield Premier return home on February 11th when they host Ohoka in a two-day match.

GONNA BE A BEAR

In this life I’m a woman. In my next life, I’d like to come back as a bear. When you’re a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, your supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

When you’re a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while your sleeping and wake to par ally grown, cute, cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you’re mama bear. Everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you’re a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. HE EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat!
