West Melton School student, Eva Reed (age 12) is no stranger to Irish Dancing competitions. Most weekends involves the family packing up the car and attending dance classes or competitions,” commented Eva’s mother, Cassie.
Eva has been a passionate Irish dancer since she was six years old, after she was invited by a friend to have a go.
Currently, she dances for the O’Neill School of Irish Dance, which has two studios, one based in Rolleston and the other in Sydenham. Irish dance takes a lot of commitment, including training for twelve hours a week if competing in hard and soft
shoe dances.
This year the family attended the National Irish Dancing competition which was held in Hamilton, from October 7th9th, to watch Eva compete. The well-attended competition started with solos and ended with team dances. Eva danced against some very stiff competition in the Under 12 category (the age for competing is taken from January 1st).
Dancers wore special dresses, and numerous outfits were seen hanging up waiting to be worn or had already been used at the competition.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE
Darfield Artweek, People’s Choice winner was ‘Without a Paddle’, by Diana Nicholson-Plank Diverse and complementary opposites transcend Diana’s work. Her work is humorous and profound, natural and constructed, unanswered questions, unfinished stories… Working in mixed media, acrylics and oils, she loves combining traditional oil techniques with a more contemporary methodology to produce pieces both unique and evocative.
“After beginning my art training in 1993, I headed to Christchurch to get my BA in Spatial Design, followed by a Diploma in Interior Design. Teaching at the Design and Arts College in Christchurch ignited in me a love of teaching, but not the bureaucracy of the job. So, in 2016 I did the only reasonable thing I could think of - I left my job and built my own wee Art School, ‘Discoveries’,” commented Diana.
“Now, living the dream, painting day after day and teaching art, surrounded by a menagerie of furry friends at the base of the hills of Banks Peninsula - I’m like the proverbial pig in mud!
“With works held in collections in both New Zealand and Australia, I sell mostly through art shows, commissions and mail lists, as well as at Forfar Street Gallery in Roxburgh, Central Otago,” Diana concluded.

AMAZING POLO TRIP
Local polo players, James Reid and Matthew Geddes , along with four other boys from Canterbury Schools and a support crew of parents have recently returned from their trip to NSW, Australia, where they attended a polo camp and played against young up-and-coming polo players.
The logistics of transporting supporters, players and their polo gear four hours north and inland of Sydney took a bit of coordinating. The early morning start on day one meant a long day of travel and horse selection, which included riding a series of mounts that would be suitable for each player for the camp and games.
Matthew commented, “The trip to Scone Polo Club’s Polo School was an awesome experience. We were very lucky to be coached by members of the current Australian Polo Team and Australian legends like Glen Gilmore and Ross Ainsley . They taught us heaps about tactical play and spent lots of time helping us with our riding, as well as teaching us how to better school our ponies.
“There were thirty nine kids on the camp, and everyone was friendly but also competitive when it came to the afternoon games!
“The visiting players were lent ponies to ride for the week, and we had to get to know the ponies pretty quickly and adjust to how they like to be ridden,” Matthew concluded.
Both boys agree it was a challenge playing the Australian kids, as they were on their own ponies, and it was harder for
them on borrowed ponies. But they learnt heaps, and it was incredible having so many polo legends on the sideline yelling advice on where to be and what to do!
James also played in the final of the A group, which was fiercely contested and high scoring by both teams, but the NSW team came out on top winning, 7-4
At the end of the week, six of the Scone Polo School players were chosen to come on an exchange to Christchurch in December.
“We are looking forward to hosting them and catching up again,” commented James.
Matthew and James both received a prize for the Most Improved in their groups, which they are very proud of.
The group was also lucky enough to visit Ellerston, which is like Disneyland for Polo, with incredible fields and facilities.
“It was cool to see such amazing polo facilities in the middle of nowhere,” James added.
Matthew is looking forward to putting everything that he learnt on this trip into practice for the upcoming season, and he hopes
he gets the chance to go to Scone Polo School again.
James is looking forward to playing on his new mounts this season and having the opportunity to represent his Club, Port Hills, at tournaments and take up any other opportunities polo might present at club and school level.
“Polo is a big commitment, there is a lot of dedication that goes on to get your horse’s fit, shod and fed well to play at their peak performance. Practising (Chukkas) during the week is important, along with lessons for both players and horses,” James concluded.
“Dean and Brent Geddes did a great job of coaching and managing our players, and we would like to thank them and our families, as well as South Island SUPA School Polo for supporting us and creating this opportunity,” commented James’ mum, Andrea Reid

DARFIELD NETWORKERS
The Darfield Networkers Group started a few weeks ago to serve the local and greater Selwyn area, as organisers recognised that many small business owners are working from home offices.
As its facilitator, Linda McCarthy envisions a local business community that allows those working in Darfield (and surrounding areas) to come together weekly, to support and help each other in their business journey. Linda is supported by Prue McCaughan - a Kirwee local, who facilitates two Rolleston Networkers Groups.
“We encourage members to learn about each other personally and each other’s business; thrive by sharing knowledge, look out for opportunities for everyone, and support each other to be successful in every aspect of their businesses. Our thanks goes to The Fat Beagle Café for hosting us,” commented Linda.

SELWYN DIWALI
Sunday 13th November 2022
Diwali is an Indian festival of lights, and is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains around the world. Diwali symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.
Selwyn Diwali - ‘Selwyn Celebrates Indian Culture’ is back. The last time we organised Diwali in Selwyn was in Lincoln, in 2016, with the support of Selwyn District Council.
Bhartiya Samaj Canterbury Trust and Canterbury Indian Women Group Trust are organising Selwyn Diwali again this year, with the support of Selwyn District Council, Selwyn District Creative Communities and Ministry for Ethnic Communities. It will be a great opportunity for community to intermingle with each other and give a reason to celebrate something together after Covid. Family friendly event. Entry is free.
The festival celebrates our community’s cultural diversity with arts, music, performing arts (songs, instrumental and dance performances) and food (cooking demos and food stalls). There will be exhibits featuring everything from costumes, jewellery and beauty, to business products and information, crafts, performing arts, art and craft activities, including Rangoli art, diya/clay lamp painting, block printing, card making and culinary art.
This will be a great opportunity to experience, celebrate and enjoy the rich Indian culture. It is an occasion which holds traditional significance inspired by love, warmth, dedication and commitment.
Selwyn Diwali is being held at Lincoln Event Centre, on Sunday 13th November 2022, from 4pm–9pm.

GREENDALE 150TH JUBILEE
Greendale School is one of several in the district celebrating a major milestone, but Greendale has now published its third book to accompany their Jubilee.
Greendale School 2022 builds on books from previous jubilees written by Myrtle Adams and John Park
The Chairman of Greendale School’s Jubilee Committee, Earl Worsfold said, “As you’d expect, it’s about the School since it began, but this one focuses on the memories of the people who have attended and left since the last book was published, in 1997.
“We wanted to give it some context, so it’s about the fascinating history of the district too.
“We’ve recorded stories from families who have lived here for many generations. Those family histories include the hardships of the early settlers, their resilience and enterprise.
“We’ve included big events of the last twenty five years - Covid 19 of course, earthquakes, floods and snowstorms.
“Most people who attended any New Zealand school, even a generation ago, would find our
chapter on the school today an eye-opener. It answers the question, Why is school so different now?” Earl concluded.
The latest book has many interesting stories and facts, including how the School logo is based on a design by a senior student from the early 1980s, Sylvia Murray
There is endless positive comments from past students, teachers and principals about how friendly and inviting the School is and has been.
“Lovely school. Lovely community. Truly lovely kids,” commented past Principal (2003 - 2011) Robert Innes .
“It’s a fabulous School. I liked the community and parents.
They were very passionate about their child’s education. Anything you wanted to organise, you had the full backing of the parents and the district as well,” commented ex-teacher from 1998 and Principal (1991-1994), Joyce Wylie
The 150th Jubilee of Greendale School begins Friday 21st and ends on Sunday morning.
Copies of the book will be available at the Jubilee and
Greendale School.
From 9:30am on Saturday, October 22nd, Greendale School Principal Bronwyn Harding and current students, will begin the Official Opening of the 150th Jubilee. The bell will then be rung by Ray Naughton , who was on the Committee for the School's 100th, Chairman of the 125th Committee, and is a Committee Member for the current celebrations.
150th Committee Chairman, Earl Worsfold, will welcome everyone, followed by Ralph Brown , the School's current Board of Trustees Chairman.
Bronwyn Harding will raise the flag, and the reinstated Mayor, Sam Broughton , will officially open the proceedings.
Helen Ridgen , the oldest past pupil attending the celebrations, will be joined by her great granddaughter, Miyon Ridgen (a current student) to cut the celebration cake. Morning tea and official photos will follow. Old fashioned games will be played while photos are being taken, as well as Tug of War, a lolly scramble and other fun activities throughout the event. Lunch can either be consumed while the photos are being taken, or while watching the Jubilee Parade on the corner of Greendale/Dip Roads.
The public are welcome to attend the free ‘Evolution of Transport’ and ‘Farm Machinery Parade’, which begins at 1pm. Once the parade has finished, the vehicles will be parked and able to be viewed.

QUALIFIED FOR WORLD CHAMPS
...continued from front page.
Luckily dancers keep the same solo outfit for a whole year, which helps with costs as these dresses are expensive. Eva danced and jigged her way through the three dances in her class. Placing in the top five in the Hornpipe, then the Reel and finally the Heavy Jig Set! She was also part of team dances that placed second, third and fourth.
Eva’s fantastic results have meant she has qualified for the 2023 World Irish Dancing Championship, which will be held next year in Montreal, Canada, from April 2nd - 9th. This is her second time qualifying for this event, but the last one was cancelled due to
the Covid pandemic. So it’s very fitting that she qualified for the first post-Covid event in the 12 and under category.
Congratulations Eva - and well done to her whole family who have rallied around her in preparation for this, and other, competitions.

To the Editor:
Great Service SDC.
Last week, I had pleasant and helpful conversations with Selwyn District Council staff in three different Council departments - I was totally impressed with their attitude and efficiency on a Friday afternoon. Thank you, Emma, Charlotte and Jonathan.

Build or Buy Existing
Building has certainly become fraught with uncertainty. With waiting for land titles, supply chain issues and fixed price contracts, you have to ask yourself if it is better to buy an established home. It really comes down to personal choice.
For a first home buyer, there is the added bonus of possibly doubling your first home grant if you can manage to complete the project for $750,000 or less and earn less than $150,000 joint income. This does not have to be your forever home, so be realistic about what you really want verse what you need. This may go on to become a rental if you can build in the equity and use this as a stepping stone to your next home.
For the investor, you can build a healthy home that you know will pass the Tenancy rules, and you can make it low maintenance.
Buying an established home means you may have very little to do in the way of landscaping, and you can look in an area that suits your preferred school zone or suburb.
You have to weigh up the pros and cons of both and go with what makes you feel good!
Ginny Nelson.

JUNIOR LAWN BOWLS
The Malvern Men and Women’s U5 singles were held Sunday, October 16th, at Kirwee. U5 is a Junior Grade, for bowlers that have played for five years and under. The first round of the day was Jo Latter versus Bronwyn Hamilton , both from Darfield. This was a well contested match, with Jo romping ahead with a convincing lead when she lost the mat at 12 - 3, which gave Bronwyn a chance to fight back from behind. Jo was up 19 - 18 and only needed 2 to seal the
match when Bronwyn won the next end to make it 20 - 20. The final end was a nail-biting finish, with Bronwyn winning the match, as well as overall winner of the U5 Women’s singles for the second time. With Jo runner up, Rhonda Lyndon from Kirwee was third, and Jo Paekau from West Melton was fourth.
The Men’s winner was Jacob Inch from Oxford, second was Paul Morriss from Oxford and third was Robbie Watson from Kirwee.

Danz Fit took eight students ranging from 7 to 13 years of age. Principal Director Leisa Yaxley said, “It was great to be back at the competition, which had been previously cancelled for the last two years due to Covid. The girls have been training really hard leading up to this competition, and we couldn't be prouder of their results.”

PERFORMING ARTS COMP
During the recent school holidays from October 1st - 5th, TM Dance World had thirty five students travel to Blenheim to compete in the Marlborough Performing Arts Competition.
On the Saturday night it was teams night, which was a busy but exciting night for all involved. Eleven teams competed and ten teams placed in the top three in their sections. “We are so proud of our TM Competition team, who have worked so hard all year and put their best work out on stage,” commented TM Dance World Director, Tara Marshall
“Our teams performed in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and Hip Hop. Many dancers were competing in all four styles as well. We had students ranging from 8 to 17 years old compete in this competition, not only in teams but in solos, duos and trio sections throughout the week.
“We absolutely loved travelling with the team again after a two year break due to previous Covid restrictions! Congratulations to all of our dancers for fantastic results over the week,” Tara concluded.

MILESTONE FOR RIDERS
The 50th Springston Trophy was held at McLeans Island, from October 6th - 9th. This year it was hosted by Springston Pony Club, who also held the first-ever event in 1972. The event started with an idea discussed at the breakfast table by the late Mary Dalley at Pemberton, near Christchurch. Don Collett and Joan McCall were travelling back south with horses that had competed at the 1971 New Zealand Pony Club Association Horse Trials Championships, in Masterton. The three friends decided it would be great to have an event that catered for riders that often wouldn’t have the opportunity to ride at the Championship event, so Springston Trophy was born. Springston Trophy is an annual Pony Club teams eventing competition, that has between 4 - 6 riders competing over three age groups and heights (max. two at each height).
The event has changed over the years and moved with the times, but the teamwork and sportsmanship this event creates has only got stronger. The event
is hosted by a different Pony Club from throughout the South Island each year.
Many local riders attended the event doing their best for their team. This year the senior riders were treated to being able to walk the course with New Zealand Olympian Blyth Tait , which was a highlight for many.
On Friday 7th, the dressage day kicked off, with riders giving it their best. Leading after day one of the Competition was View Hill Pony Club, who held the lead throughout the event, bringing home the overall win.
Saturday 8th, was cross country
day which is a favourite for many, it sees many highs, lows and often a few spills. This year there was also a Top Team Competition, which consisted of games without horses for the riders and supporters to enjoy after their day competing.
On Sunday 9th, horses and riders have to negotiate their way around the final phase, a show jumping course.

GREAT SUPPORT
The Malvern Anglican Parish Vestry and parishioners have been very busy over the last two weeks with the White Elephant and the Spring Fair fundraisers.
Organisers would like to thank everyone who donated their goods, without this support, the Parish wouldn't be able to run these events.
“The Fair was held on a lovely Spring day, and it was great to see all those that attended,” commented Helena Cridge
“The plant stall started with a hiss and a roar and was well supported, as was the raffle and bake sale. It was different this
year being held at the Darfield High School Hall, but people enjoyed the sausages outside and the stalls inside. The White Elephant had a change of venue as well due to Trinity Church
having roof repairs. The old St John's garage proved to be a great facility, and we would like to thank St John and Darfield High School for the use of their facilities,” Helena concluded.
PET LAMB SUCCESSES AT SHOW
The Junior members of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association MidCanterbury Branch and their lambs and ewes are looking forward to their second show season.
They started their season in style at the Selwyn Spring Show, on Saturday, October 15th, hosted by Ellesmere A&P Association, where pet lambs and their handlers were judged by age group apart from the last class which was restricted to black and coloured breeds only.
Twenty four month old Jack Reed from West Melton, was the youngest entrant in the Pet Lamb Classes and came away with a well deserved second and fourth with his lamb Spidey, a caramel and white, fibre,
meat and milk sheep breed.
Four year old Matilda Reed led her pet coloured ewe (pet lamb from last year) Lamby and her twins confidently around the ring and was awarded second. Then backed that up with a fourth in the Open and Coloured Classes for her coloured pet lamb Elsa, who wasn't even a week old on show day.
Older sister Eva Reed won third with her pet coloured ewe (pet lamb from last year) Lavender and fourth in the Open and Coloured Pet Lamb Classes with her three day old lamb, Toffee Apple.
Not to be outdone, twelve year old Tessa Bamford , from Darfield, led her white English Leicester cross pet lamb, Ellie, to fourth in the Open Class and her
black English Leicester cross pet lamb Ellectra, to third in the Open.
The show was also presenting the Ross Manson Memorial Trophy, for the best presented Black and Coloured Wool and Home Craft Breed Pet Lamb for the first time. The Trophy was donated by the Manson family to acknowledge the class established by Ross, at Ellesmere A&P Association for black and coloured pet lambs and their handlers.
The appropriate Craft Breeds were selected from the Black and Coloured Pet Lamb Class, and the judge and Vivien conferred to select the top three lambs. After much discussion, Vivien awarded the Ross Manson Memorial Trophy to Tessa Bamford, with her English Leicester cross lamb Ellectra. Not only was Ellectra impeccably turned out, but Tessa knew all about what craft her lamb would support now (fibre) and in the future (fibre, milk and a long time in the future pelt). Kim Lewis.
