The South Malvern Community Charitable Trust has undertaken the restoration of the former South Malvern School, a category 2, Heritage New Zealand building, built in the 1880s. Once completed, the building, which is located in Whitecliffs, will be used as a Community Hall and Civil Defence Hub. The building is structurally sound but after falling into disrepair over the years, has suffered from extensive water damage. The community is fortunate to have qualified tradespeople who have volunteered their time and expertise for the restoration work, but funds are needed to purchase building materials. The Trust is grateful to Niagara Timber and Roofline for the provision of heavily discounted materials and to the Selwyn District Council and Fonterra for financial grants. Over the past year, the west side of the old school building has been restored with new weatherboards, repointing of chimneys and new guttering. The Trust is currently fundraising for new main doors, and work continues to restore the east side of the building. There is still substantial interior restoration work to be undertaken, and The Trust is seeking donations to help with purchasing materials. To make a donation, phone 022 375 6157. Locals can support The Trust’s efforts by attending A Family Fun Quiz Night, scheduled for Friday, August 5th, at 7pm at The Glentunnel Community Hall. Tables of 4 - 6 at $10/person, or head along and join a table on the night. Great raffle prizes are up for grabs, and a light supper will be provided. Please bring cash for raffles as no Eftpos is available. To book a table, contact Rosemary on 021 076 8234, or there will be door sales on the night.
