We are not the only area to be suffering from damage this winter. A huge thank you must go to the emergency workers, as well as anyone who lent a hand to help over this turbulent period.

Hopefully, the rest of winter will be uneventful.

Over the last couple of weeks, New Zealand has taken an absolute hammering weatherwise. The local area was struck with flooding last week, which saw many road closures and rivers breach their banks. Many people had to use sandbags to help try and stop rising waters.

CAFÉ ON THE GREEN The Willows Café in Glentunnel (part of the Hororata Golf Club) is about to undergo some big changes. At 3pm on Friday, July 22nd the Café is changing ownership from Sarah Van Hoof to Coalgate locals Zoe and Jimmy Robertson and will now be known as ‘Café on the Green’.

“Owning a café has always been a dream of mine and I don’t think I would be doing this if it was any other café,” commented Zoe. “I assumed that I would have to wait until our children (Heath and Fergus Currie, Theo and Ava Robertson) were much older and independent, but the opportunity presented itself and the location is perfect,” Zoe continued.

The family are no strangers to business, having been company owners and directors for almost twelve years with building company Phase 2 Construction, which employs thirteen builders.

“Before owning our building company and having extra kids, I spent several years working in

hospitality, including several of the local hotels,” said Zoe. “I’m a real foodie, I cook when I’m happy, sad, angry and in times of tragedy. I have to feel like I’m helping, and when facing illness, grief, adversity or whatever someone is going through, everyone still needs to eat!

“I’m always in my kitchen creating something, it’s my happy place. My kids love to join me, and I’ve made it my mission to ensure all my kids can cook.

“I’m a creative person, and I have found that this is my way of expressing that. I’m good at baking too, but cooking is my favourite. There is something soothing about chopping onions and garlic and then frying them, the smell that emanates, it’s mouth-watering… that is what home cooking is about.

“I’ve always been good with people and enjoy creating connections and meeting new people. I have the most eclectic group of friends as a result - no one type of person, just anyone that I’ve created that

connection with.

“We’ve created a new menu, simple and back to basics, with a focus on awesome, hearty/homecooked food. We’ll add to it along the way, but want to get our feet under us first.

“The aim to be as communityfocused as possible, to support local businesses and be a part of the area we love so much.

Johnny Fresh will be our produce supplier, Little Red Farm will supply eggs, we’ll be stocking Coalgate Honey for sale as well as using it in our recipes, and LPG4U will be our gas suppliers.

Keep an eye out for a local artist on our walls too.

“We want the Café to become a household name and something that locals can be proud of. I am

incredibly excited as well as nervous and look forward to seeing everyone at the Café soon,” Zoe concluded.

This weekend the pair are holding a working bee with friends, family and some of their builders to get things underway, put their stamp on the Café and get ready for their Grand Opening on Saturday, July 30th.

RURAL HOSPITALS UPDATE Omicron, new Covid-19 subvariants, flu and other respiratory illnesses, are putting additional significant pressure on the health system. While this isn’t unexpected in winter, hospitals across the Canterbury region, and other health districts around New Zealand, have been experiencing pressure.

Te Whatu Ora - Waitaha Canterbury said continued sustained pressures on the health system have delayed reopening its rural community hospitals in Darfield, Ellesmere and Waikari.

“At this stage, we do not have a definite date yet for re-opening these rural hospitals, as it is dependent on the ongoing demands of Covid-19 and other pressures on our health system, including workforce needs which continue to be challenging,” commented Becky Hickmott, Executive Director of Nursing.

“While these hospitals have been closed for longer than originally anticipated, communities, patients and staff can be assured that we have established planning and processes in place

and delivery will continue.

“Moving forward, local health services are going to be designed around the needs and priorities of communities, with clear requirements for active engagement and consultation.

Changes to the way health is delivered will mean local people and their communities, including iwi, will have a say on which health services are provided, and how they’ll be provided.

“This engagement, which we are in the process of getting underway, will form the basis of a plan for our rural communities.

“We all want New Zealanders to have easier access to quality health care closer to home - no matter who they are or where they live,” Becky concluded.

“We are very much a family-run business, where all our team know family comes first, including for them. We feel that our values are also very consistent throughout our team and hope these are portrayed through to our clients.

Relationships are important to us, as well as providing highquality homes that we can be proud of and our clients can be proud to call home,” continued Ange.

“We have seen some extremely challenging times in our industry over the past 18-24 months, including supply chain issues, land shortages, and labour issues due to Covid. Thankfully, we have an extremely supportive team of sub-contractors and suppliers who have continued to positively minimise those

effects to our business,” commented Chris.

The pair enjoy being able to offer house and land packages as an option, as this enables a lot more people the opportunity to build new homes. They also get a lot of pleasure assisting clients in designing their own homes, on their own sections and being a part of their journey with them.

Ange is also handson in the business, but spends her time in the office, consistently trying to fine-tune processes and ensure customers are getting the best service they can provide. This is extremely important to the pair.

Construction can be stressful, but we have a great philosophy of sharing problems so we can

all dig in and help where we can.

By doing this we can all leave work at the door when we go home to our families each night,” said Ange.

If you love to fossick around at garage sales looking for a bargain or a unique find, then mark Sunday, August 7th on your calendar. There will be approximately 35-40 sites around Oxford township, as well as business sales tables.

Organised by the Oxford Promotions Action Committee (OPAC), maps of the sites can be pre-ordered to receive by email.

If you prefer to pick one up on the day, they will be available at the Pearson Park Oval, off Dohrmans Road (signposted from Main Street) from 9am to 11am and after 11am at the Farmers Market, Main Street (look out for

the big pine tree). A gold coin donation for the map to help with extensive advertising around Canterbury would be appreciated.

“Each year the Trail has brought hundreds into our area, and this year should be no different,” commented Promotions Member Ron, who is co-ordinating the event.

“It brings people from all around Canterbury to our town and once people have finished fossicking about there are places to visit such as the Museum, Art Gallery, and cafés, as well as the Craft Market open in the Oxford Town Hall,” Ron concluded.

NEW PUZZLES FOR PRESCHOOL The children at Darfield Preschool and Nursery were very excited to receive some new puzzles recently, made by Year 7 students at Darfield High School (DHS).

The Centre was approached by DHS teacher, Chris Mossop, to see if they would be willing to participate and students were tasked with creating puzzles for them.

The curriculum focus was on the key competencies of 'managing self' and 'participating and contributing', as well as creativity and problem solving. A design-thinking approach was adopted and the students followed the process of brainstorming ideas (with the preschool tamariki in mind as their key stakeholder), prototyping to test their ideas

and then ongoing evaluation to improve the final outcome.

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the DHS children were not able to deliver them to the Preschool and see them being played with, but Clare Clatworthy, Centre Manager, called in to collect them. “It was great to go into the school to collect the puzzles the students had created, and this gave me a chance to thank them and catch up with a few ex-pupils that remember being at preschool when they were younger,” commented Clare.

“The children were very excited to have new resources and certainly enjoyed working them out. One they particularly liked was ‘Who lives here?’ The children had drawn animals and their homes and you had to

CHEERLEADING SUCCESS Local girl and ex-Kirwee Model School student, Addy Cawthray has been participating in cheerleading for four years for Christchurch Club, All Star Cheerleaders, and absolutely loves what the sport has to offer.

When Addy was eight years old she started hounding her mum (Ange) to start cheerleading. “I fobbed her off for about six months, telling her it’s not something we do in New Zealand, it’s an American thing.

Anyway, she was persistent and I got sick of hearing about it so I googled it. Sure enough, there was/is a Christchurch Club, and that was the beginning of a whole new world,” commented Ange.

“Cheerleading is nothing like what people may think, as there are no pom poms or big letters.

However, there is heavy make up, fake tans and big bows, which is mandatory at every competition (very American).

“The sport is very much gymnastics based, with dance mixed in and a lot of tumbling

and strength involved. Teams are sometimes as small as nine people, but can range up to as large as thirty.

“Cheerleading has recently been recognised as a competitive sport and is also going to be included in the Olympics. Like any sport, there are different levels, and different commitments.

“It is a very positive and supportive environment, one in which the coaches are incredibly encouraging, but at the same time push the teams which pays dividends once they get to

competitions.

“It’s a great sport for anyone (boys as well) to be involved in, providing great body conditioning, and life long friendships,” Ange concluded.

The competition season has recently started for the year, with Addy and her team making a great start by winning the United Cheer competition in Wellington recently. Addy has a few more competitions coming up, including one in Nelson at the end of July, followed by three major events in Auckland, from August to November.

Second, we’re going to solve New Zealand’s persistent under-investment in infrastructure, by fixing the funding and governance bottlenecks and getting capital to where it can add value.

Third, we need to up our game on technology to lift productivity. We need to remove the barriers preventing our businesses accessing capital and ideas so that more of our small businesses achieve a global scale.

Fourth, we’ll give businesses a predictable and consistent regulatory environment. We’re going to take a rules-based approach because we know that supports investment, and New Zealand must compete for its capital.

Finally, we will rebuild our connections with the world stronger than they were before. More trade, more investment both ways, and greater immigration to help build our workforce.

Doing these things well will lift our economic performance, but that is not an end in itself. Beware the Opinion!

In our brave new world of social media platforms, many new media sources and google, it is very difficult to sort fact from fiction.

At one time we had three TV channels, and it was widely recognised that TV1 or National was the source of fact. Not so anymore, as many channels are competing for that news bite and tend to forsake the truth for want of a good story.

Our newspapers are becoming filled with ‘opinions’ rather than facts, and like a school of little fish, we tend to be swayed by that opinion as the fish is by the shark.

Reports of interest rate rises, property prices falling, and recessions tend to be self-fulfilling prophecies, as confidence falls, and the fish fly before the shark, fixing, selling, not selling, panic buying, etc. It is very hard to maintain confidence in your own gut feeling with so much distracting noise but do your own research.

Opinions are just that - one person’s take on how they see the world, and they are not even necessarily qualified to give such an opinion.

So stay the course, shut out the noise and try to find the facts amongst the fiction. Good luck with that!

DARFIELD COLLISION CENTRE A couple of months ago, Will and Em Tucker took over the ownership of Darfield Collision Centre from Carl Dunshea and Mel Blackburn. Will and Em had recently moved from town and wanted to work and live in the area, as they liked the community feeling.

The pair have four young daughters, aged 4, 2 and 7 week old twins. Em (previously a vet nurse) has family based in Hororata, and they are both looking forward to getting to know the wider community.

Will has been in the vehicle industry for twelve years, qualifying as a panel beater in 2013, began estimating in 2017 and started managing a workshop in 2019. He is heavily into cars and has a special

interest in chassis repairs and restoration. They own a classic VW Beetle and an older, heavily modified VW Golf.

“Things have been going well since we took over and it’s business as usual for now, with some minor improvements such as a coffee machine in the reception area for customers to use while they wait,” commented Will.

“The team here aims to provide quality repairs to the local area, as well as the greater Selwyn community.

“We are approved for all major insurers as a repairer, including State, AMI, NZI and FMG. “There are free loan cars available for customers to use in the Canterbury area, meaning clients can stay mobile, even if they work in town,” Will

Over Labour Weekend 2022 (21st, 22nd and 23rd of October), Greendale School will be celebrating its 150th Jubilee with a variety of activities based in and around the School.

The weekend will begin with a Conversazione Evening on Friday night, in Greendale Hall.

Saturday will start with the Official Opening at the School, followed by a Parade, and then the day will close with a Meal and Mingle at Greendale Hall.

A Service of Thanksgiving will end the celebrations on Sunday morning, again at Greendale Hall.

Chairman of the Greendale School 150th Jubilee committee, Earl Worsfold. area. Accordingly, a ‘Greendale District Educational Meeting’ was held at T.W. Adam’s house at 7:00pm on Friday, 15th December, 1871. At this meeting, those present were told that, under the Education Act in 1871, the district would have to find one-sixth of the costs of the school building and £20 towards furnishing.

1872 April 12th: A site was chosen for the school.

June 5th: The School Committee called tenders for the construction of a school and schoolmaster’s house.

W. Goss tender of £323 was successful.

October 14th: Enrolments were taken, classes were started and Mr Gorton was appointed the first Headmaster.

1873: Mrs Morrissey was appointed school cleaner at the rate of 4 shillings (40c) per week.

1876: The Schoolmaster, Mr Gorton, started a night school for adults.

1877: A second teacher was requested.

1879: The roll stood at 54.

1880: The roll rose to 86, and the building of a new classroom added to the main school, building was begun.

1883: Mr Cullen was asked to dig a trench under the library end of the school ‘to see if that will remedy the bad air complained of in the school’.

1886: The roll reached the highest recorded in the history of the school, 106 pupils.

1891 December: The Camla or Side School (as it was usually known), was opened, and remained open until May 1916.

During the 1890s the roll fluctuated around 25-30 pupils.

1896: To encourage more regular attendance at both schools, certificates were given to children who attended regularly.

1903: Greendale School was reduced to sole charge. The Headmaster, Mr Morland, had a portion of the school ground fenced off for a horse paddock (in the 1940s it contained up to 20 ponies at times).

1908: The school house was burned after a kerosene cooker exploded. It was rebuilt in 1910.

1914: C.L. Ridgen gained a Junior National Scholarship.

1922: Greendale School’s 50th Jubilee celebrations took place.

1927: Discussions were held on consolidations with Darfield School. This never eventuated.

1941: The roll fell further to 28.

1942: Form 1 and 2 children started going to Darfield for manual training, but due to petrol rationing this was discontinued until after the war.

1947: Greendale School’s 75th Jubilee Celebrations took place.

A roll of Honour was unveiled for both World Wars.

1953: The school learners swimming pool was built. After an unsuccessful attempt to set up a Parent Teacher Association in 1940s, the Greendale School PTA is finally established.

1964: With the school building now being over 90 years old, the first moves were made to the Board requesting a new school building. The old school building was declared to be structurally unsound.

1966: The hedge on Bridge Road was removed. The work, done by voluntary labour, raised $150 for school funds. The new school was completed and officially opened on 15th December, the old building was dismantled and sold.

1972: The school roll had risen to 56 as the Greendale School’s Centennial Celebrations took place.

1976: It was decided that school fees would be set in 1977 at $3 per child.

1977: District High School was discussed, culminating the reaffirmation in June of the decision taken by the Ministry of Education to translate the school to a Form 1-7 high school in February 1978.

1984: Electric heaters were

installed in classrooms, insulation batts were fitted in the ceiling, and an automatic outside light was put in the classes. Dogs owned by the schoolhouse tenants attacked school children and the teachers.

1985: Following a ban on children travelling on the school bus to after school activities, because of unacceptable behaviour, a stern note from the committee was sent to all families, reminding them that the use of the was bus a privilege.

1986: School bus behaviour was still a problem, with some parents riding on the bus to increase expectations of better behaviour from the children.

1988: In March the roll had lowered to 16. School fees were set at $12 per child and $20 per family.

1989: Selwyn Adams received a long-service award for his services to the school in many capacities over the years.

1992: School fees were to remain at $12 per child and $20

per family, but were to be reviewed for the following year.

1995: In this year technological change at this school was very evident. A Commodore 64 computer which has been donated was evaluated but after some discussion, it was considered to be rather obsolescent. Instead, Apple IIGS computers for both classrooms were purchased.

1997: Greendale School’s 125th Jubilee year began with the roll at 31. The jubilee celebrations were to be held at Labour Weekend.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Last week (July 11th - 13th), the annual South Island The team were awarded the SISS Darfield High School's (DHS) Secondary Schools (SISS) Junior Junior Netball Combined Grade, Junior Netball Team played in Tournament at Hagley.

Teams Sportsmanship Award for 2022. The Sportsmanship Award is for teams that show fair play and respect to the opposition and umpires. Points are awarded by the umpires and accumulate over the seven games played.

“Our team ended up in a tough draw with Queens, Cromwell and Burnside, where we played with a lot of heart and spirit, despite the extremely cold and wet weather on Tuesday,” commented Sport Coordinator, Pip Deans.

Following my broken ankle accident on June 1st, I would like to thank Dave, who lives in School Lane Kirwee, and the person who lives opposite the entranceway to the A&P Showgrounds, who came to my assistance. They stood me up, retrieved my undamaged car, drove me home and waited until I contacted my son, Stuart.

Thanks to all the hospital staff at Christchurch Public and Burwood who cared for me during my 23 days in hospital. The meals were great and their care exceptional.

Thanks to all who have sent get well cards, sent flowers, rang and visited. All the meals that I received, were very much appreciated. To my family, who have made sure I am okay (my son even got me a mobility scooter, so I can get outside and collect my mail).

Once agin, thanks to you all.

This is more than I can say about ACC! I contacted them a few days after I came home, hoping to get some home-help. They took all my details and said I would be put on the urgency list. Two weeks later I had not heard or seen anyone. I rang them again twice, they took all particulars again and passed me onto another department, where I hung on for 1 hour before hanging up. They have still not contacted me! 8 weeks is a long time to be non-weight bearing on my ankle. I would only have required somebody for 1 hour per week. I wonder how many other more needy people are slipping through the net!
