On the evening of Wednesday, June 22nd, members of the Malvern Lions Club and partners celebrated fifty one years of service, with a delightful dinner meeting at Darfield High School.

We were pleased to have representatives of other Clubs in the district, including Oxford, Akaroa and Ellesmere present for the evening.

The evening commenced with a social time, accompanied by several highly talented high school students entertaining us, with an array of delightful vocal and instrumental items. This was followed by an equally fine winter roast meal prepared by the school’s PTA, with the assistance of several enthusiastic waiters and waitresses.

After the meal, the evening progressed into business mode, with outgoing President Tony Thwaites delivering his Annual Report. Tony reminded us that

Covid had restricted many of the Club’s activities, especially our catering projects, which have for many years been so valuable toward our fundraising efforts.

On a sad note, he recalled the tragic loss of very popular Past President Gavin King in a farm accident, and the more recent passing of Charter Member Roger James, who gave fifty years’ service to the Club.

SELWYN SWIM CLUB PRIZEGIVING FOR 2021/2022 SEASON The 2021/2022 swimming season has been one that Selwyn Swim Club are very proud of. A few key areas we have been particularly impressive in are our culture, performance and potential. Through a tough year of programme structure and coaching changes, further Covid19 impacted events and preparation, our team has withstood some tough challenges with the aim of representing the Selwyn Swim Club and our community to the best of their ability.

Even-though racing and trainings were impacted, our swimmers and Club success were still widespread and high-achieving.

We were represented at National and International Meets and there were a significant number of Club records broken across all age groups.

Our Age Group Trophies are based off using XLR8 points and FINA points to determine our winners. XLR8 is a four-event score which includes a distance event (400m+), an IM event (200m+) and your next two highest scoring events. FINA points is a single event score, with the world record representing 1,000 points.

This past year has seen a bigger engagement with more swimmers within the programme, while also now opening our doors to future swimmers in the Learn to Swim stages. The next 12 months is about taking the next step to encourage commitment to our sport and our programme through fun

and exciting events, connection to our swimmers and families, and finding ways to make swimming a passion long-term.

The Darfield Shooting Centre is hoping to include an Archery division to join the existing clubs.

On Wednesday, July 6th, Mathew D’Ath from Darfield will be promoting the growing sport at the Shooting Centre (corner Creyke/Telegraph Road).

Mathew from Arrowhead Archery, first began to shoot a bow around the age of five, when he and his older brother were both given bows from their father. He feels very lucky to have been able to do archery for close to forty years with his father before he passed away.

“Something I used to enjoy, and still do to this day, is watching the flight of an arrow. There is just something about watching an arrow fly through the air to the target,” commented Mathew.

“There are many ways to try archery, but I would suggest if you are interested in an Archery division starting locally, come to the July meeting. The Darfield Club may offer an introductory course in the future, depending how much support comes from the meeting.

“Equipment can be very simple with a one piece traditional Robin Hood type bow with a string and a few arrows, through to a compound bow with cams, cables, string sights etc. It's a bit like a bike, you can have a BMX or a full electric with gears and flashing lights. There is something for everyone.

“Archery is for all ages, and all abilities can join in and have fun, or be as competitive as they like. Recently, I got to shoot with someone in an electric wheelchair, and in the past, I

have shot with someone with one arm and one leg, which shows the sport really is for everyone.

“I started at five years old, and I have friends whose children have been shooting from as young as three. The beautiful part is you can give a child a bow and arrow, and they will shoot it for hours, finding many ways of having fun.

“This year, the biggest shoot in the world, ‘The VegasShoot’, was won by a fifteen year old,” Mathew concluded.

EMPOWERING FAMILIES Whether you are a parent, a grandparent or a caregiver, it often falls to you to assist young people in navigating the challenging circumstances of today’s world.

On Monday evening, July 4th at 7pm in the Darfield High School (DHS) Hall, there is an opportunity to listen to and ask questions of a multi-disciplined team of professionals. They will share their knowledge,

experience and advice on many of the issues that parents, caregivers and mentors face with strong-willed, independent children and adolescents. It is often assumed that families have the wherewithal to cope with children’s issues. This is often a misleading assumption, as there are many people who struggle to cope or know where to go to seek meaningful assistance. Our panel will tackle tough topics

such as drugs, alcohol, anger, risky behaviours and so much more. We will then have a ‘Question Time’ to allow our audience to address members of the panel.

An invitation is extended to all parents, grandparents and caregivers of children who attend primary and secondary schools in the district. There will be supper provided by the DHS PTSA and an opportunity for those attending to talk individually to panel members.

On Sunday, June 26th, the Hororata Parish celebrated the retirement of their much loved Vicar Jenni Carter.

Jenni has contributed much to the Hororata Parish over the last fourteen years.

“During her time in our Parish, she was more than just our Vicar.

She was a friend to many, a hard working community volunteer and someone who would listen with compassion and guidance,” commented Lucy Cookson.

Jenni and partner Ximena still reside in Hororata and remain an integral part of the Hororata Community.

Do you qualify for a ‘top up’ settlement payment from Southern Response?

If you settled an earthquake insurance claim with AMI or Southern Response before October, 1st 2014, then you may be entitled to further compensation from Southern Response.

As a result of court proceedings (Southern Response v Dodds), Southern Response was held to have misled its insureds by withholding the true costs to repair or rebuild an earthquake damaged house.

When settling claims before October 2014, for each house Southern Response prepared a ‘Detailed Repair/Rebuild Analysis’ (DRA), which set out the cost of repairing or rebuilding. This DRA was disclosed to homeowners.

However, Southern Response prepared a second, internal DRA that was never disclosed to homeowners, which included professional fees, project management costs, and a contingency allowance, all as part of the total costs to repair or rebuild the damaged house, that were not included in the DRA provided to homeowners.

The High Court held that not disclosing the true costs of repairing or rebuilding the house was misleading, and that the amount of the non-disclosed costs should be paid out to the

homeowner who took the case.

They received $178,894.30. This decision was upheld despite Southern Response appealing to the Court of Appeal. Southern Response has now accepted that it will compensate other homeowners who cash settled with Southern Response and who did not receive the full repair or rebuild costs.

You may be one of approximately 3,000 homeowners eligible for a further 'top-up' payment package from Southern Response if you owned a home: • That was Insured with AMI; and • Was damaged in the 20102011 Canterbury earthquake sequence; and • You settled your insurance claim with AMI or Southern Response before the 1st of

October 2014.

We have an experienced litigation and insurance team, with our specialist staff being experts with earthquake insurance claim processes and resolving claims, having worked for both insurers and insureds in this area for many years.

KIDSFEST KidsFest is an annual two-week Council events programme, produced for Canterbury children aged 0-17 years. The festival offers a number of exciting events and activities through the winter school holidays. MID-WINTER CHRISTMAS FUN The Kirwee Mid-Winter Christmas was yet another event affected by Covid. The dreaded virus first disrupted the planning and preparation by the organising committee, and then prevented a number of ticket holders from attending the festivities. However, this was not unexpected, and in the circumstances, it was generally agreed that it was a successful night on all fronts.

About sixty guests were greeted with a complimentary mulled wine upon arrival (which no doubt encouraged the purchase of raffle tickets for a chance to take home one of forty five prizes). Julie Shanks led the catering team that provided hearty soup with buns, club sandwiches, roast ham, chicken, potatoes, boiled vegetables and Christmas cake, as well as other dessert treats, for the continuous supper. DJ Chris Singh provided

music that started with a Christmassy theme and later brought a decent crowd onto the dance floor.

The Committee thanks everyone who supported the event by attending, helping in the preparation and clean-up, and not least the many local businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes, or gave a donation in support of the fundraising for the hall kitchen.

It is heartening too, that some people who were laid low by

sickness chose to donate the value of their entry ticket to the cause.

Hall Committee Chair Ken May was very pleased with the way the night went and commented that it was worth running such social events even just to get the community together, and the funds raised were a bonus.

Due to Covid restrictions, several of the Club’s valuable catering fundraisers had to be cancelled during the year, resulting in a downturn in the Club’s fundraising efforts. However, a successful firewood raffle and an extensive used battery collection were undertaken, to stimulate the Club’s funds. The batteries will be cashed in when favourable prices return. Pea straw orders remained high, thanks to the generosity of several local farming families, contractors, and the working bees our members supported.

This year, another excellent Golf Tournament raised $17,000 toward an Archgola Project at Darfield Hospital, while Club members also assisted at the Coast to Coast event, which was held in rather inclement weather conditions. We do thank those people who have so generously supported these projects.

Among the many other recipients of the Club’s support, were

Daryl Collier being awarded the Ramsay Gibson Award for Services to the Malvern Lions for 2021/22.

Kirwee School, who received $5,000 toward the building of a shelter around their school pool, and two final year Darfield High School students each received $2,500 toward their first year of Tertiary Study.

Unfortunately, the Club’s 50th Jubilee, which was to be held at Bangor Estate in September last year, had to be postponed due to the Covid restrictions in force at the time. The Sub Committee now hopes to hold the event on Sunday, September 25th.

The Club would also like to take

this opportunity to thank our very supportive and generous community for their unrelenting support again throughout the past year.

Unfortunately, the Club’s 50th Jubilee, which was to have been held at Bangor Estate in September last year, had to be postponed due to Covid Restrictions. The Sub Committee has now been recalled, in the hope of holding the event on Sunday 25th September this year.

SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER On the 17th of June, Chamberlain Agriculture Ltd held a ‘Dyno’ day at their Sheffield yard, as a fundraiser for the Sheffield Fire Brigade.

Dyno is short for dynamometer, which is a machine that tests an engines power output and performance. This is done by attaching the tractor’s PTO to a diagnostic machine. The tractor is operated at full throttle, and then the machine gradually applies resistance until the tractor starts to lose power.

This is all watched on a computer screen, which shows the engine’s performance figures.

Diesel Tune NZ generously donated their time and machine

for the event, and Fill Fuel provided a spit roast lunch.

Farmers were charged $50 to have their tractors tested and spectators, a gold coin.

Everybody was given a ticket for a prize draw, which consisted of donated merchandise from Cochranes of Canterbury, JJ’s and Power Farming.

“Dyno days are huge events in the UK but are not really held here, so it was a bit of a guess as to how many, if any, tractors would turn up,” commented Dean Chamberlain.

In the end, thirty one tractors were tested, and $1,693, was raised from donations for the Sheffield Fire Brigade.

PLANS CONFIRMED FOR THE YEAR Selwyn District Council has adopted its Annual Plan for the next 12 months, with a focus on delivering in the key areas identified by the community through the Long-Term Plan (LTP).

The Council adopted the plan at its meeting on Wednesday, June 22nd, committing to a $112.5m capital plan to deliver on the needs for growth and the plans agreed with the community in the past year.

They include $20.2m in water supply projects, $21.6m in wastewater projects and $20.4m in transportation projects across our growing district.

The Plan, adopted four new projects following consultation.

The Council confirmed its support of a proposal by Go Hororata to establish a community hub at the current Hororata Community Hall. This would include providing $1m of funding as agreed in the LongTerm Plan and with no impact on rates and be subject to a satisfactory feasibility study of the proposal, and preparation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the parties, outlining the transfer of ownership and future relationship.

parts of the Upper Ellesmere Water Race over a five year period, with changes to the timing of when some sections will be closed, based on submissions. “The projects deliver on the community’s expectations,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton.

“Last year, we agreed on a strong plan with the community to meet the challenges we face and ensure that we strengthen the aspects that make us the most popular place to live in the country.

Malvern Miniature Rifle Association Season Aggregate 2022

BRIDGE TO BRIDGE NORTH Riders of all ages took part in one of New Zealand’s fastest mountain bike races on the banks of the Waimakariri River, on the 19th of June.

Held annually, the Bridge to

Bridge ‘North’ race is now three mountain bike races, down the northern bank of the Waimakariri River.

It was a great start to Matariki on Wednesday, June 22nd, with ‘Warm Wednesday’s’ starting outside Trinity Church. The first students arrived at 8am, and servers Marita, Heather, Alicia, Theckla and Coral were all geared up to serve hot chocolate.

This will be taking place every Wednesday over winter from 8am to 8:30am.

They raced eastwards along the river stop banks, into the forest west of the road bridges, under the State Highway 1 river bridges, through Waimakariri Park, then back up onto the stopbank at Kaiapoi for a sprint finish on Raven Quay.

Darfield local, Steve Roberts finished second overall in this event by one second and first in the 40 - 49 category.

“The racing was hard from the start. A group of six formed early on, later dropping to four after a number of attacks to break the group up. The track was dry and fast, with freezing sou-west wind at our backs most of the way,” Steve commented.

Those looking for a shorter challenge took on the 30km race , and for the younger riders (aged seven and over), the 15km ride.

Race director John Moore commented, “competitors love these races because it’s all downhill, with plenty of open gravel roads that make it the fastest MTB race on offer.

Despite Covid hitting a number of competitors prior, we had a total of 211 of all ages line up on the day for the races”.

The next Bridge to Bridge event takes place on December 4th.
