Two locals were recently named in the Queen’s Birthday and Platinum Jubilee Honours list, William (Bill) Woods, JP, will receive a QSM (Queen’s Service Medal) for services to conservation and the community, and Reverend Louise Deans will receive a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to the community and women.

Bill has volunteered with community organisations in Canterbury, including the committees of Sheffield Waddington Township, Malvern St John, and the Glentunnel Museum extension.

He was the Treasurer for ten years at Malvern St John and personally built the addition to the garage for the second ambulance. Plus, he personally raised the additional finance to buy a new $60,000 ambulance.

He has been a member of

Hororata Historical Society, Port Hills Park Trust Board from 2009, Summit Road Society (SRS) Board from 1998 and President since 2009. As President of SRS, he has guided the organisation through the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes and the Port Hill fires, to mitigate hazards in the Ohinetahi Reserve and raise funds for restoration. Recently he negotiated funding for the encirclement of Omahu and Gibraltar Reserves, with a fence to keep out wild deer and pigs, donating equipment for the project and helping construct live capture pig traps. Between 2016 and 2018 he negotiated the SRS’s acquisition of the 234 hectare Tussock Hill Farm, donating $600,000 towards the purchase to restore the farm into a conservation space.

TAKE A STAND our community and provide the opportunity for everyone’s voice to be heard. The Mayor, councillors and community board members are elected to be community leaders and to represent the views and interests of all communities.

“We need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the diversity of our community,” David concluded.

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election, as long as they are a New Zealand citizen, enrolled on the Selwyn electoral roll and are nominated by two people over the age of 18, who are also enrolled to vote in the area the candidate is planning to stand.

In the 2022 local elections, ten councillors will be elected across four wards - Ellesmere (2), Candidate workshops will be Malvern (2), Rolleston (3) and held from 7pm - 8.30pm on the Springs (3).

Five community board members following dates and locations: will be elected to the Malvern • Tuesday 28th June Community Board, in three West Melton Community subdivisions - Hawkins (2), and Recreation Centre Tawera (1) and West Melton (2).

• Wednesday 29th June The Mayor is elected ‘at large’ Darfield Recreation Centre across the district.

• Thursday 30th June The election is held by postal Council offices, Rolleston voting which opens on Friday • Tuesday 5th July 16th September and closes at Leeston Library. midday on Saturday 8th October.

“This is an opportunity for people interested in standing in the 2022 elections to learn more about the nomination and election processes, and the roles of councils and elected members. It’s also a chance to have any questions answered,” commented Council Chief Executive David Ward, who will also lead the workshops.

In the meantime, everyone over the age of 18 and living in the Selwyn district is encouraged to make sure they are enrolled to be able to vote and that their contact details are up-to-date.

Reverend Louise Deans has been contributing to the Canterbury community for more than thirty years. She has been an ordained Anglican Priest for thirty three years and is a community priest.

After revealing her own sexual abuse by a high-ranking priest, the Anglican Church developed protocols for complaints of professional misconduct and initiated educational initiatives for the safety of the church attendees.

She published ‘Whistle Blower: Abuse of Power in the Church - a New Zealand Story’ in 2001, which resulted in several women coming forward who had experienced similar abuse in the church, including those who appeared before the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care to testify. This resulted in a formal apology

Bill has volunteered in the Springfield community as Chairman of the Township Committee in 2009, assisting Springfield Library, the school and local Kowai Pass Domain, and constructed the replacement of the landmark Springfield Donut after it was vandalised.

He was a Selwyn District Councillor for several terms (between 1989 and 2004), was Mayor from 1992 to 1995, and is currently on the Malvern Community Board.

He was the driving force for the building of the bridge over the Selwyn River on Bealey Road, and was responsible for the replacement of the Mt White Bridge, which was built debt free by his successful negotiation of a contribution from DOC. Bill also designed and built the TV arial on Kelly’s Range at Otira, so that both Otira and Blackball would receive TV reception unaffected by lightning strikes.

Louise was an elected member of Selwyn District Council between 1989 and 1995, and was a committee member of the Rural Women’s Stepping Out programme, advocating for farm women to pursue their careers.

She has also been an advocate for heritage buildings in Christchurch, following the 2011 earthquakes.

Louise created the Homebush Stables Historical Society in 1992, restoring the stables building on the farm of Homebush and established the tourism business giving tours of the building, gardens, museum and restaurant. She continues her work as an Ordained

Inspired by the 2020 Covid Lockdown to publish her children’s stories, Selwyn-based author Alyse Boaz has released her second picture book ‘Sammy the Rooster’.

Previously, Alyse had written textbooks: Marketing in New Zealand (three editions), Study Skills Made Practical and three Level One Business Studies Achievement Standard workbooks.

“I’ve always wanted to share my children’s stories but needed an artist to bring them to life. I decided to look for an artist who’d join me in selfpublishing,” commented Alyse.

“I visited Brighton Gallery and asked if any member worked collaboratively. They all said, Robert Scanlan. As I walked out of the gallery, my friend told me her teenage niece in Wellington,

spent her evenings drawing, so I ended up with two great artists.

Robert chose Royal Blue. He liked its ecological message where a little girl, Lany, rescues a stranded starfish and then decides to return it to the sea.

Samantha Hart loved the environmental message in Sammy the Rooster. This touching story about a rooster that is left behind at the refuse tip has a happy ending, while the book’s illustrations highlight the rubbish we create. The last page suggests ways to reduce it.

“There are many situations and experiences that spark ideas for children’s stories,” added Alyse

who admits, while some are quick to write, most need crafting and lots of editing.

Alyse is thankful for the support and feedback she’s had from other writers, family, friends, and outlets like 234 Cottage Gifts in Darfield.

“The fun part’s sharing my stories with children - reading each book and talking about its topic. Children really engage and participate.

“Artist, Robert, is now adding the final touches to illustrations for a third picture book, about a robot that forgets its head.

“This one’s lots of fun with a trail of destruction,” laughed Alyse.

Kirwee Model School (KMS) would like to thank Darfield Men’s Shed, in particular Howard Anderson and Gordon Gilmore for making a much needed carpentry table for their Year 2, 3 and 4 students. Their generosity in sourcing materials from around Darfield helped to keep costs down, and their building knowledge meant the School received a table ready to use that included additional extras for the children to use.

Alex was born in Stoke -on Trent, United Kingdom and moved to Brighton when he was ten. He met Blair and Kelly McIlroy at the local rugby club (Hove Rugby Club) in 2012 and become good friends with them.

They talked him into moving to New Zealand to play rugby in

2014. He played two seasons of rugby with Blair at Hove and one in Darfield. In 2015 Alex met his wife Hine, and they returned to the UK where he got a job with the England Rugby Football United, the pair came back to New Zealand in 2016.

Purchasing your first home is probably your biggest investment to date. By obtaining expert legal advice from the outset, we can help to ensure you take advantage of all grants and loans suitable for you, meaning you might be able to get into your first home sooner than you think.

If you are on the hunt for your first home in the Christchurch or Selwyn region, the greater property value cap is likely to increase the range of properties you might look into, but you will also need to consider the lending criteria which your bank will apply to your finance application.

In addition to the First Home Grant, withdrawing from your KiwiSaver monies can also provide the boost needed to get on board the property ladder. To be eligible to withdraw from your KiwiSaver investment fund, you need to have been a member for at least three years and must intend to live in the property as your main home, eg: it cannot be a rental investment.

Another product available to assist First Homebuyers is the ‘First Home Loan’, which is issued by selected banks (such as Westpac, Co-Operative and SBS)

and underwritten by Kāinga Ora. This initiative reduces the deposit requirement to 5% for eligible first home buyers, which may make first home ownership just that little bit more accessible.

Uncertainty In a Rising Interest Rate Market So as I write this, the Reserve Bank has just announced the Official Cash Rate has been increased from 1.5% up to 2%.

This in turn will result in banks increasing their interest rates on mortgages.

This may cast some doubt over whether or not to buy a house in this market. I would suggest the time for quick turnover may have passed, but that is not a very sound investment strategy anyway, as the housing market is not considered a ‘liquid’ asset where it is normal to get quick returns.

So putting aside the ‘quick buck’ mentality, buying a house today or last year still has the same principal - buy it, pay the mortgage, look after it, and in 10 or 15 years, you would be very unlucky not to have made capital gain.

I have alluded to this before in this column - ask your parents or grandparents how much they paid for their house and what it is worth today. They possibly serviced their mortgage at 3 or 4 times the current rates!

SUSAN AND PHILIP BALDWIN RETIRE Nearly thirteen years ago, my husband Philip and I packed up our belongings (and our dog) in London, Canada and arrived in Darfield, where I took up the position of the Vicar of the Malvern Anglican Parish.

We wondered how we’d be received and what it would be like, not just starting work in a new parish, but moving to a whole new country in the Southern Hemisphere. I can remember my first night looking up into the sky. We had a great view of the night sky in Canada, so seeing the Milky Way and lots of stars wasn’t anything new, but the most disorienting feature of the night sky was that none of the constellations looked familiar to us. Orion was there but looked different somehow (upside down of course) and likewise, the orientation of the moon looked different.

I think it was on my second day here that I was told about norwesters and it wasn’t long before we experienced the hot, dry winds that were so very new to us. We marvelled that our laundry could be dry in one hour under such conditions (providing it hadn’t blown away!) instead of taking a whole day in the hot, humid summers of Canada.

Then we discovered pies!

Individual sized meat pies, and oh what a marvellous variety of pies there were to try. I remember the first one I ever tried was a Southern Man pie from the Darfield Bakery.

We received such a warm welcome from each of the five congregations in the parish. We explored Darfield on our walks with our dog and little by little we got to know the surrounding communities of churches in Courtenay, Kirwee, Sheffield and Springfield. The sixth church is up in Arthur’s Pass. Our first trip there took nearly three hours simply because we kept stopping to take photos.

It was all strange and new to us when we first arrived, but I knew it wouldn’t be long before everything that was new would become the everyday familiar things of our life here in Malvern. I think it took only six months for it to feel like home, but a full year to experience the cycle of events, weather and

seasonal changes.

A full year after we arrived in Darfield was September 4th 2010, which for most Cantabrians is remembered for the earthquake. Another new experience! But we also experienced the amazing support the community offered to one another, and we were glad to be part of the recovery process and the ways in which all the churches worked together to form what would become the Malvern Hub and the Foodbank.

The volunteers in the Fire Service, St John Ambulance and Civil Defence are all to be commended for the incredible work they do. Just as commendable are the ways in which I’ve seen ordinary people of the community work together to offer care, support and practical aid. That was something we became accustomed to seeing over and over again, when our local communities faced tough times and losses. We’ve seen such examples after the Christchurch quake on February 22nd 2011, the wind storm of September 2013, the Port Hills Fire, the horrible shooting at the

Mosques, and most recently Coronavirus and the terrible flooding in May 2021.

I’d have to say my favourite part of each week for the past eleven years has been my involvement with the Pre-school Music programme, at Trinity Church each Wednesday morning. It doesn’t matter what kind of a week I was having - Wednesday mornings with the parents and pre-schoolers were always a joyful oasis.

It’s certainly been an eventful twelve and a half years of ministry in the church here, but we wouldn’t have traded it for anything else.

Susan’s husband Philip will also be missed in the community. Philip has been the chair of the Malvern Community Arts Council for the past five years and a member of the Performing Arts Committee of the MCAC for the past eleven years. He volunteered with many organisations in the community: the reader/writer programme at the Darfield High School, the Malvern Youth Trust, the Arthur’s Pass Committee, got involved with the Fonterra hearings when consent was

being sought for the build, and more recently chaired the Malvern Housing Trust. In his first few years in the community he wrote articles regularly in one of the local newspapers. There will be many more who have never met him, but saw him daily, Tilley hat on head – and

walking his two energetic dogs around the township.

Now it comes time to retire, and Philip and I look back with gratitude on the time we have spent here. To all the Malvern communities we say thank you.

TRADITIONAL CELTIC MUSIC SHOW Multi-instrumentalist Rennie Pearson is bringing his solo show of Celtic traditional music to Sheffield Community Hall at the end of June, as part of his June/July South Island tour.

Grounded in the Celtic musical traditions, Rennie takes the listener on a journey through history, weaving together tunes and songs and the tales that accompany them to create an intricate and varied show. His

engaging stage presence and storytelling opens the door for audiences to connect with the music, which he plays through wooden flute, Irish tin whistles, guitar, bodhran and voice.

Rennie grew up in Wellington with Celtic music in his blood.

Having heard the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland on his parents CDs as a baby, he grew up knowing he just had to learn to play like this. He picked

up the flute at age eight, learning by ear in Irish sessions under the guidance of Galway born flute player Pat Higgins.

With Irish music as the cornerstone of his knowledge, he then went on to delve deep into the traditional music of Scotland and maritime Canada, gaining proficiency in a wide range of different instruments along the way.

Rennie has made a name for himself in the Irish music scene of New Zealand and Australia.

He has performed with great traditional musicians such as John Carty, Catherine MacEvoy, James Kelly and more. He has taught throughout New Zealand and internationally, both solo and with a range of other musicians, such as Rob Zielinski, Oscar West and Gillian Boucher. Most recently he taught wooden flute at Ceol Aneas (New Zealand’s Irish Music School), accompaniment at ScotStrings Camp (New Zealand Scottish Music School) and traditional music workshops at Auckland and Whare Flat Folk Festivals.

In 2021 and 2022 he toured with Irish dance sensation, Celtica, as their flute and bodhran player.

He also released an album with fiddler and small-piper, Oscar West as the kiwi folk duo, ‘Polytropos’, in 2020. At the age of nineteen, he studied with wooden flute virtuoso Chris Norman on the east coast of Canada, as a live-in apprentice.

He has since taught alongside Chris at many Boxwood Festivals in New Zealand and Australia on guitar, whistle and flute.

MATARIKI 2022 Ko Matariki kei runga, ko te tohu tēnā o te tau!

Matariki signals the Māori New Year and is considered a time of celebration and renewal.

Matariki begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster, which appears mid-winter.

Customarily, Matariki was celebrated by the lighting of ceremonial fires, gifts and offerings, and celebrations to farewell the dead, honour ancestors, and to celebrate the coming year.

The Matariki star cluster was also used to find out how abundant the upcoming year’s harvest would be. Bright, clear stars promised a warm and successful season. However, hazy stars warned of cold weather and poor crops.

Waitī is connected with all freshwater bodies and the food sources sustained by those waters. Waitī watches over freshwater environments such as awa (rivers), roto (lakes), kūkūwai (wetlands), and waipuna (springs).

MALVERN U3A UPDATE With the new Matariki holiday being instigated this year, it was felt appropriate to have a Māori speaker to explain The Māori New Year significance and other Māori beliefs.

Malvern U3A were fortunate to have Tahae Roberts from Christchurch, come to speak to the group on Friday, June 10th.

Tahae started with a guiding proverb and a prayer to bless the day’s proceedings, he included English responses, followed by a short hymn.

Tahae told us something of his upbringing on the North Island, his university days studying the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori Cosmology and his exploits captaining a Waka that could take 100 warriors.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that sit at the tail of the Milky Way, that comes into view low over the north-eastern horizon which heralds the Māori New Year, and gives the subtle changes of the seasons.

Matariki is also known as the Pleiades or the seven sisters, they are to the left of Orion’s belt and are nine stars, when seen on the North Island they can be visible for eleven months of the year (weather and light pollution permitting). Matariki

is about reconnecting with your home and whanau, and the stars of the cluster each have a specific role to play.

Matariki: a female Star, guardian of the other stars in the cluster that together signify wellbeing, reflection and hope.

Waiti: is the star linked to fresh water and the food that comes from it.

Waita: is the star linked with the sea and the food that comes from it.

Tupuanuku: the star linked with foods that grow in the ground.

Tupuarangi: the star that links food from the sky, fruits, berries and birds.

Waipunarangi: is the star linked to the rain.

Ururangi: the star that determines the wind for the year.

Pohutukawa: the star that is associated with those who have died in the previous year.

Hiwa i te Rangi: this is the star that gives us dreams and aspirations for the coming year.

MALVERN CROSS COUNTRY It was fantastic to see schools back together again for the Malvern Cross Country, after nearly a year of no Malvern events.

The weather was brilliant for the event, although the nor'wester got the better of the finishing chute.

The Sheffield School PTA kept everyone hydrated and fed throughout the day. The placegetters in each race received their certificates on the day, and the first six runners in each Year 5 and 6 race will compete in the Canterbury Cross Country, to be held at Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub on the 22nd of June. Good Luck to those going to this event.

Thanks to Rach and Chris Benny for the challenging course, to the marshals and Sheffield School staff for organising the event, and most importantly - a great big shout out to the children for making it a fun day!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE Local Harry Leech from the Darfield Rugby Club Under 8 Tackle Team, recently won the More FM ‘Live Like A Crusader’ competition. He ran the ball out and lead the Crusaders out onto the field for the game against the Reds on Friday, June 3rd.

Harry was allowed to wear his Darfield Club socks, which he did with great pride. He also attended the captain's run on Thursday, and he even got to meet his favourite player, Richie Mo’unga. He was a lot shorter than Harry expected!

While at the captain’s run Harry was given a stadium tour, where he got to see the changing rooms, medics, physio and dentist rooms. He also saw where the players climb into wheely bins filled with ice before getting into the spa.

Harry also got his new rugby boots and rugby ball signed by most of the players, as well as Razor (Scott Robertson Coach). He had a chat with Razor, telling him which club he played for, etc.

Harry commented, “I was excited when I saw the players walking towards me in the tunnel, then I ran as fast as I could because Scott Barrett runs fast and has longer legs than me!”

Apart from running the ball onto the field, Harry’s other highlights from the night were, being treated to comfortable seating in the recliner chairs up by the coaches box, getting a bag full of Crusader gifts (including a much wanted Crusaders Rugby Ball), and Razor coming over to say hi and giving him a fist pump.

Another special moment was that one of Harry’s best friends (Nixon Earle - also from Darfield Rugby Club) was in the guard of honour that night, so he got to wave his flag as Harry led the Crusaders onto the field!

Winning the competition was an amazing experience for Harry and one that he will never forget!

BOWLS DARFIELD UPDATE Bowls Darfield held its AGM and election of officers for the coming 2022 - 2023 Season recently.

Outgoing President Peter Redfern gave a full report of his work and Bowls Darfield’s achievements over the past four years.

Some of these achievements included a new club uniform, an upgrade of the outdoor area (including a fabulous new deck shade sail, fences and shelters), new appliances and repainting parts of the Club inside, to name a few.

Bowls Darfield would not be able to function without generous sponsorship from local businesses. They have a new

sponsorship board inside and advertising boards outside and on the scoreboards.

The Club is lucky to have one of the best greens in the Malvern district, thanks to our tireless Green Keeper and hard working committee. Some of their players, as well as their Bowls Darfield Teams, this past season have enjoyed successes at Canterbury Centre Level.

New President Ashley Paul will be well supported by both new and old, experienced Committee Members, to keep the Club functioning and thriving.

MALVERN NETBALL Malvern Netball is about halfway through the season with many players in the area enjoying the many different opportunites that the Centre has to offer.

Players in Years 1 - 4 participate in a skills and drills session on a Monday after school, where they are taught the basic principles of the sport.

The Years 5 - 8 players have an Academy session on a Saturday morning before playing against other Clubs within Malvern.

The Social players enjoy their Saturday morning at the Darfield Courts with six teams entered in that Grade.

The Senior players play in the evening mid-week and have had some close competitive games. It started off with six teams (Darfield, Kirwee, Oxford, Malvern B and two from Springfield/Sheffield) playing off for the Trophy, which was won by the Springfield/Sheffield Sharks. The Club teams are now playing an extra round and into finals to determine the winner of the Searle Challenge Shield.

Meanwhile the Centre has entered four teams in the Selwyn Netball Competition where games are played at Lincoln and Rolleston.

These teams have finshed their first round of four games to finalise their grades and have just started the Competition Round.

Malvern A started off in Premier 1 Grade and are now playing Masters 1 on a Thursday night.

Malvern Masters, also play on a Thursday night in Master 2 Grade, which they are doing extremely well.

Malvern B started off in Premier 3 and have now been promoted to Premier 2 for the rest of the season.

Malvern C are in 4th Grade and playing very well and are hoping for a podium finish.

The Selwyn Representative Season started at Queen’s Birthday weekend and continues until the end of July.

McKenzie, from Malvern C, has also been selected for the Selwyn U16B team. Jessica Lal, also from Malvern C has been included as a non-travelling reserve in the same team as Rachel.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB Heavy cloud cover and a moderate northerly wind caused dull targets with a bit of variation. Just another challenging day of shooting on offer for the small group of sixteen that attended the June 5th shoot.

A combination of competing shoots and weather, as well as the looming National Champs, caused a low turnout, as we suspected.

The first event was the 25 target Single Rise, just the two possibles, both in A Grade, showed the conditions were challenging. A Grade winners were Selwyn Everett and Tony Stuart 25’s, B Grade winner Paul Templeton 24 and C Grade winners were Ross Millichamp and Marcel VanLeeuwen 22’s.

Next up was the Side by Side shoot, it is amazing the condition of some of the guns on display and the ability of some shooters to adjust quickly to the change.

Squad one had Selwyn Everett leading the way in the 15 target match with a misbehaving gun, which occasionally wouldn’t fire the second shot, to lead the way with 13/15 only to be matched by Bevan Brown in

squad two. A shoot-off, which was required only lasted three targets as the misbehaving gun saw a lost target for Selwyn, which was quickly taken advantage of by Bevan. Warwick Hill won the B Grade with 11/15 and Marcel VanLeeuwen the C Grade with 6/15.

The conclusion of the day was the 10 pair Deauville Doubles with drawn pairs. Three teams slotted 20/20 Ron Greatorex and Gunner Watson were the first to qualify for the shoot-off, followed

by Tony Stuart and Steve Gawn, last to qualify were Paul Templeton and Bevan Brown.

Another complete round was shot, and Paul and Bevan dipped out with 19/20, leaving just the two pairs.

A third round separated the last pairs, with Tony and Steve coming out on top.

Many thanks to all the helpers for their efforts once again.

The next shoot will be on Sunday, July 3rd at 1pm.
