Horses are in the blood for local Annabel Adams, as her family has owned and raced both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds for generations. Her grandfather was a harness trainer, and her great grandfather was the Managing Director of Addington Raceway. In terms of Thoroughbreds, family friends introduced Annabel to Tony and Lyn Prendergast when she was a young teenager, and her passion really ﬂourished from there. All of this as well as hard work has helped Annabel to be named as one of twelve trainees, in the Godolphin Flying Start Programme for 2022-2024. The prestigious Thoroughbred Industry Management and Leadership programme is made up of trainees from ﬁve different nations, including Australia, Ireland, UK, USA and New Zealand. “I moved up to Matamata just over a year ago, to join Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer at Valachi Downs Racing. Stephen and Kris, as well as Valachi's General Manager Gareth Downey, have been great mentors to me and were extremely supportive with the Godolphin Flying Start application process,” commented Annabel. “Liam Cunningham and I are the two lucky Kiwis that were successful in our applications. Beginning in August at Kildangan Stud in County Kildare, Ireland,

the two-year programme gives trainees the opportunity to learn and experience management operations and leadership in the global Thoroughbred industry with phases in Ireland, UK, USA, Australia and Dubai,” said Annabel. The course is accredited by University College Dublin Michael Smurfit Business School, as a Graduate Certificate in Management. Over half of Godolphin Flying Start graduates have gone on to become Managers, CEOs, or business founders, working in media, racing, breeding, bloodstock, sales, consultancy, veterinary and marketing. Godolphin Flying Start is a massive opportunity for any young, aspiring person. “We will travel and learn from the greatest international leaders and trainers in the industry. “I like to think I'm a pretty hard worker and do things off my own bat, so I feel extremely grateful to be rewarded with a lifechanging opportunity like this. I'm ready for the challenge and will continue to work hard toward my goals. It is all super exciting and still a wee bit surreal. I'm looking forward to getting over to Ireland at the start of August to make a start,” concluded Annabel. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DARFIELD FIRE BRIGADE Darﬁeld Fire Brigade is a volunteer station, meaning all members of the Brigade dedicate their own time to serve our community. Having a local

Brigade is vital to the well-being of our district, as they assist people when they need it the most, helping communities prevent, prepare, respond and

recover from emergencies The crews respond to fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, search and rescue, civil defence, natural disaster responses and of course, they also offer fire safety advice. The crew responds to approximately 100 call-outs a year, and this would be about a 50/50 split for daytime and night-time emergencies. Currently, they have twenty three team members but are needing to recruit more volunteers, especially people who would be available to attend call-outs during the day. This may suit people that are based in the urban area of Darfield, who work in the township or from home, are stay at home parents or university students. Night and weekend volunteers are always welcome as well but to have more people available to attend between 9am - 3pm would be a huge benefit to the Brigade. Full training is provided to members, and anyone over the

age of eighteen with reasonable fitness would be an ideal candidate. If you are interested in joining the Brigade talk to your employee, partner, parent and convince them of the benefits of joining a local community service. Then get in touch with a Bridge member or phone Deputy Fire Officer, Ken Muscroft-Taylor to arrange a night to attend a training which take place every Wednesday at 7pm, at the Station on North Terrace. If you decide to sign up, after attending a few trainings, you will be required to complete a week long course in Christchurch. FENZ will offer financial compensation

and match your standard wage for any training courses attended throughout your time in the Brigade. Full support is also offered in multiple ways after attending any serious incidents and accidents. Have a chat to a current members as they are always happy to talk to anyone who would like to know more about joining the team. Senior Station Officer, Mike Richards commented, “that the role is very rewarding and being in the Fire Brigade is an enjoyable way of helping the local community”. STOP THREE WATERS ROADSHOW Last Saturday, the Taxpayers’ Union stopped in Rolleston for the second event in its 39 stop, nationwide roadshow campaigning against Three Waters. Around sixty residents turned up for the event outside the Te Ara Ātea library. The roadshow is designed to hear and highlight the concerns of ratepayers and elected councillors threatened by the Government’s Three Waters regime - and is calling on the Select Committee in charge of the legislation to do the same. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams, has called on the Government to send the Select Committee in charge of consultation to take

their consultation on the road and hear submissions face-toface in the communities affected, as was most recently done with the End of Life Choice Bill. Jordan commented, “Do you think co-governance is going to lead to higher taxes or lower taxes? The idea that these reforms are going to result in more efficient or affordable outcomes is bananas, absolutely bonkers.” Former Finance Minister and Rolleston resident Ruth Richardson (who is also on the Taxpayers’ Union Board) has criticised the governance structure of the proposed new water entities as well. encouraging ratepayers to make a submission on the legislation when the consultation opens. “As far as we the National Party are concerned, we have said this will be one of our top agenda items if we can form a Government late next year. In our ﬁrst 100 days, we will repeal this law,” Nicola commented. Nicola emphasised that National supports the introduction of the new water regulator, but not the core Three Waters legislation that would remove control from local councils. SELWYN MP UPDATE Recently, Labour conﬁrmed the worst fears of local communities by tabling a Bill to ram through its Three Waters agenda. Even with most local councils in open revolt, and overwhelming public opposition to these reforms, Labour is unleashing hell on ratepayers, putting its ideology before the wishes of the people and outcomes. The Water Services Entities Bill, lays out out the ﬁnal plans for the transfer of local assets and the establishment of a complex and unaccountable bureaucracy. The Government has consistently ignored any alternatives that National has proposed, such as establishing council-controlled organisations or contracting, and have pursued their four mega-entities model. We here in Canterbury will now get

sucked into Entity D - with approximately eight layers of bureaucracy between us, the ratepayers, and the governance boards. Under this model, communities will lose their voices, subsidise their neighbours and get worse outcomes. National has opposed these reforms consistently, and if elected in 2023, we will repeal and replace this broken model. On the topic of centralisation, the health reforms are close to passing into law - again, despite vocal opposition from the public. The Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Bill sets out the framework for Labour’s restructure of the New Zealand health system. It removes District Health Boards and replaces them with Health New Zealand and the Maori Health Authority. National has opposed this law change from the outset as, while we absolutely agree more needs to be done to improve health outcomes for Maori, we do not believe a race-based health system is the answer. There has, however, been something of a win for residents in small towns like Springﬁeld, Sheffield, Darﬁeld, Dunsandel and Leeston. Last Wednesday, at the very last minute - and in response to enormous pressure from the

National Party - the Government ﬁnally acted to include rural communities as a priority population in the legislation. By including these communities in the legislation, the new health structures would be required by law to deliver equitable levels of service, access to services in proportion to needs, and all parts of the new health system would be held accountable for ensuring that these New Zealanders get the outcomes they deserve. Rural New Zealand has seen a real decline in health services in recent years. Yet, until last week, the Government has doubleddown and insisted that rural communities didn’t need to be included as a key stakeholder in these reforms, despite having much worse health outcomes than urban areas. I welcome this U-turn from the Government and hope it will ensure rural health services are prioritised and properly funded to service rural towns across Canterbury. Nicola Grigg, Selwyn MP.

The News contacted the Canterbury District Health Board to get a response to Graham Gunn’s letter that was published on Friday, June 3rd. To the Editor: The closure of Darfield Hospital was a temporary measure due to the challenges in providing safe staffing during the Covid-19 outbreak. This included aged residential care, which has been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. We are experiencing a longer tail for our Omicron outbreak than anticipated, with case numbers, hospitalisations and staff sickness/isolation all still high. We do not have a definite date for the re-opening, as it is dependent on the ongoing demands of Covid-19 and other pressures on our health system, including a nationwide shortage of nurses and other suitably qualified staff. We are also taking this opportunity to have a discussion with our rural communities, on how we might

deliver an improved mix of services in these rural areas, that makes the best possible use of our resources and allows some services to be provided closer to home. We are meeting fortnightly with the District Mayors and Friends of the four rural hospitals that have been affected by safe staffing, to update them on our planning. Darﬁeld Hospital has eight beds and these are mainly used for aged residential care. Becky Hickmott, Executive Director of Nursing, Canterbury DHB. To the Editor: I wish to commend the four brave young women initiating the ‘Wear The Rural’ campaign along with their sponsors. This is a problem that has been building for decades. In addition to normal agricultural production exigencies, such as vagaries of climate, markets, banking and ﬁnancial challenges,

are added the politics of division and envy, carefully nurtured by successive governments, and perfected brilliantly by the present administration. This has multiplied the pressures and isolation faced by rural people who during Covid, earned 83% of this country’s overseas exchange. They were rewarded by a tidal wave of punitive, pusillanimous, administration intensive laws as well as being denigrated and demonised in the media. Rural people involved in production have become a marginalised minority, all too easy to politicise and vilify. Dr Shane Reti, the National Health Spokesperson, has pleaded in vain for Rural Health to be classiﬁed with Maori and Pasiﬁka as an at risk group. In Japanese cultures, suicide was seen as the ultimate protest. In the case of Rural New Zealand, to keep on living will prove more powerful. John Oakley, Glenroy.

The Malvern and Courtenay A&P Associations combined Winter Feed Competition was held on the 1st and 2nd of June, with 54 paddocks judged over a wide area, from Weedons, to Lake Coleridge to Springﬁeld. A big increase over last year’s 42 entries reﬂects the different summer conditions we had this year. The judge was Luke Visser from Agricom, and the stewards representing the Malvern and Courtenay A&P Shows were Guy Bassett and Ashley Seaton, who have both stewarded for many years. Ravensdown and Biomarinus representatives helped with the weighing of the crops. Jordan Watson from Hazlett took photos of each paddock that was projected on screen during the prizegiving, which was appreciated by those who attended. Luke commented on each class placegetter, and the winners spoke about their paddock and

the possible reasons as to why it had done so well. The Focus Crop plate this year went to kale, as half of the paddocks judged during the two days were kale. Luke said it would have been good to see more entries in the pasture class. A point reinforced several times as the judging team drove across a good pasture paddock to look at another crop of kale. The Supreme Winner was a fodder beet entered by Pemberley Farm. Luke commented that it stood out as a clean and healthy crop and was high yielding from a low dry matter variety. SCULPTURE UP FOR AUCTION Backyard artist, John Ballagh, has created a stunning 'Cabbage Tree' sculpture to raise funds for the Hororata Parish. Standing four meters tall, the unique 'Cabbage Tree' sculpture is a striking artwork. Symbolising the New Zealand Cabbage Tree, traditionally used to mark trails, boundaries, urupā (cemeteries), and births, this sculpture stands tall as a way-ﬁnder. Crafted from mild and stainless steel, bolted together over several weeks, its twisted shape casts intricate shadows as the sun moves around it. Over time the steel will elegantly rust, giving the piece more depth and interest. This is without a doubt a statement piece with a unique story, that has been built with love for a good cause.

KIRWEE HALL IMPROVEMENTS The new kitchen in the Kirwee Hall has been in use for eighteen months - but with limitations, as some cupboards and benches are yet to be installed and painting to be completed. Meanwhile, various other maintenance jobs are building up. For instance, two external doors are showing signs of deterioration due to weather. Being on the western side of the building, they are hit by the souwest storms and nor-west winds. A plan is afoot to replace them in the very near future. To help in funding these

ventures, the Hall Association Committee is preparing to hold a Mid-Winter Christmas Celebration on (you guessed it!) Saturday, June 25th. Tickets are only $30 per person, and include an almost continuous supper, with traditional Christmas treats (like baked ham and Christmas cake). There will also be raffles, with dozens of prizes generously donated by individuals and local businesses, and music to dance to till midnight! This community event promises to brighten up one of the darkest days of winter, so start
