‘Wear the Rural’ is a new business run by four passionate Year 13 Christchurch Girls High School students, Millie Adams from Greendale (CEO), Georgie Ensor from Cheviot (Marketing and Communications), Gabby Brackenridge from Christchurch (Sales and Production Director) and Georgia Taylor from Rangiora (Finance and Chef Administration Officer). These students want to make a real difference in farming/agricultural communities and have come up with the idea of creating a practical, sustainable work shirt

and logo representing mental health awareness. This business opportunity came about through their Business Studies class via the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is an opportunity for students to unleash their inner entrepreneur and experience the start-up world ﬁrst-hand, running a real business. Each YES company creates their own product or service and brings it to the market. This group jumped at the opportunity to be involved and

ART & SOUL 2022 A certain amount of excitement is gathering at ‘The Artist’s In’ as they prepare for the Art and Soul 2022 exhibition opening on Friday, June 10th. Frank Hakkart and Sarah Handley have developed the old Hororata pub into a spacious and delightful gallery. Generously they have offered this space to the Hororata Parish, to hold an art exhibition over two weekends.

The exhibition opening will be a grand affair on the 10th of June with wine and canapes. There are a limited number of tickets available for the opening and are available from the Hororata Café or The Artist’s In. The exhibition is also open on June 11th and 12th, and the following week from June 17th-19th An eclectic collection of artwork in different media has been promised from Simon Edwards, Patterson Parkin, Anna and Amelia Guild, Lorraine Natusch, Soon-Lee Spicer, Amanda King, Ben Groters, John Ballagh, Nicola Preece, Sarah Barrett, Cathie Bell, Ben Smith and Dee Innes. One of the pieces included in the exhibition is John Ballagh's unique 'Cabbage Tree' sculpture is a striking artwork standing four metres high. Symbolising the New Zealand Cabbage Tree, traditionally used to mark trails, boundaries, urupā (cemeteries),

and births, this sculpture stands tall as a way-ﬁnder. Crafted from mild and stainless steel bolted together over several weeks, its twisted shape casts intricate shadows as the sun moves around it. Over time the steel will elegantly rust, giving the piece more depth and interest. Artworks will be for sale with funds going towards the general management of the Parish and the maintenance of the First Church – the wooden church. WEAR THE RURAL ...continued from front page. Will To Live is a not-for-proﬁt organisation, 100% funded by rural New Zealand, for rural New Zealand. Founded in 2018 by Elle Perriam after her partner, a young farmer, unfortunately took his own life. Suicide in rural New Zealand is higher than any other demographic having a lasting ripple effect throughout a community, especially among young people, who are often the largest statistic. Will To Live promotes mental health awareness, providing one on one support, free education and wellbeing tools to small rural communities, often isolated from mental health resources. In September 2021, Will To Live launched ‘Rural Change’ which is a fund for private psychologists for New Zealand Farmers. This was motivated by the devastatingly long eight-week waiting lists to see a psychologist or counsellor currently in the public health system. The Rural Change fund will provide 3x private counselling sessions per farmer, with the aim of only a 2-3 day waiting time. This fund will be easily accessible to anyone employed, managing or owning a farming operation in New Zealand. The cost per hour session can range from $150-$250. The group commented on why donating the funds to this worthy cause is so important to them. “Growing up in rural communities with no talk of mental health or wellbeing, we have major appreciation for the Will To Live Rural Change Programme.

As young women, we feel as though for some reason, we are taught from a young age to just get on with it and keep going. “Often, we feel like this is what breaks us in the future because we have no way of knowing how to deal with it, which is why we think what Will To Live is doing is so important, as they are trying to break the stigma with challenges, etc. While also actually setting up tools (counselling, etc) to help people who have already been affected by mental health. Their Rural Change Program is especially important to us, as we have known family and friends that have waited months for professional help and while they wait, they only get worse. Whereas with this programme, people can get help within 2-3 days which in our opinion is pretty amazing. With this business venture, we want to remove the stigma behind rural mental health and make it a topic that is not awkward to talk about and everyone feels open and comfortable,” concluded the group.

Millie added, “I am from a farm in Greendale, and this project is very important to me. Coming from Greendale, I have a strong passion for mental health in the rural industry. As a young girl, I have witnessed many occasions of mental health breaking people and making them feel trapped, and I have felt this is a problem that needs to be acted on in our community. It would be cool for the Malvern community to get behind and support us!” Shirts can be purchased for $80 and the group will be offering NZ post courier or local drop off/pick ups can be arranged. A wonderful afternoon was had by all on Sunday, May 22nd at the Pink Ribbon High Tea, held in Sheffield Hall. This event was proudly organised by The Locals Club from Sheffield and Waddington. So far, $1,300 has been raised for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation through the sale of raffle tickets and ‘Save the Hooters’ owls which can be purchased from the Sheffield Pie Shop and the Darfield Pharmacy for $5 each. The Locals Club would like to thank the businesses from Sheffield, Darfield, Springfield, Hororata and Coalgate who kindly donated goodies for the competition and raffle prizes. Pink Ribbon Breakfast extended to mid-June, more Cantabrians urged to take part! Pink Ribbon Breakfast, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s largest annual fundraising campaign which takes place every May, has been extended to 17th June, due to a lack of registrations. Chief executive Ah-Leen Rayner said that a third fewer Pink Ribbon Breakfasts have been hosted this year, representing a drop in income of roughly $600,000. The charity is desperate to make up the shortfall in order to ensure its services aren't impacted, and it’s urging more people in the Canterbury region to host their own Pink Ribbon Breakfast. “In our third year of the pandemic, and with an under-resourced

Our specialist breast care nurses, who provide free tailored advice to thousands of women are stretched to the limit, with four times as many calls coming in to our 0800 support line,” commented Ah-Leen. “We'll always be there for patients, but if we can't meet our fundraising target, it will limit the impact we can have. So please, sign up to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to help make a difference for women going through breast cancer,” concluded Ah-Leen.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is where tens of thousands of Kiwis come together for good, to raise vital funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Pink Ribbon events can be hosted anywhere, at any time, and registrations will close on 17th June. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women, with around 385 in the Canterbury DHB area diagnosed with it annually. The money raised from every Pink Ribbon Breakfast goes towards ground-breaking research, awareness and education programmes, and patient support services.

NZDA MALVERN BRANCH JUBILEE May marked the 50th anniversary of the Malvern Branch of New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) being incorporated. The Branch was formed in 1972 by John Creamer and the late Keith Munro and Steve Mitchell. Our Branch is one of 49 branches of the Association across New Zealand, that has a national headquarters in Wellington and a nationwide membership of 10,000. The Malvern Branch currently retains over 70 members. We have two Branch life members, and many others who have and still do contribute long and hard on behalf of the members and for some that has been across many years. Our Secretary Craig Benbow, is also currently NZDA National President. He heads up an elected board that works with our Chief Executive to advocate nationally on behalf of recreational hunters, ﬁrearm users and others who enjoy New Zealand’s outdoor lifestyle. Since its formal creation in 1937, NZDA has advocated for sensible

management of game animals, while protecting our forests and grasslands for future generations to enjoy. Malvern members have contributed for extended periods to many activities over the past 50 years to deliver results in these aspects, while enjoying other's company, landscapes and natural features of our land. NZDA is not only a voice for recreational hunters, but engages in the training of new hunters through the national HUNTS programme. Many members actively participate in target sports, photography, videography and writing as part of the national series of competitions or for their own enjoyment. Our national trophy competitions are hotly contested, and the national record books are held and maintained by the NZDA. Many contribute to conservation efforts through trapping and pest control, as well as maintaining tracks and huts for all to enjoy. NZDA partners with Federated Mountain Clubs and Trail Fund to administer the Backcountry Trust, which provides funding for

volunteers to maintain huts and tracks across New Zealand. NZDA also works very closely with the Game Animal Council, providing guidance and input to the advice they provide the Minister of Conservation around game management. Based at the corner of Telegraph and Creyke Roads, the Branch shares the Shooting Centre facility with Darfield Gun Club and Darfield Smallbore Rifle Club. Numerous significant trophies adorn the walls, and photographic records of the Branch's history shared by members are displayed also. While several of our original members have passed, John Creamer, now in his nineties, is still with us. We thank these individuals for their vision and resolve to form the Branch, and it is clear there was a huge amount of work done in the early days to provide the facilities we all enjoy today. Like many clubs, we undertake fundraising to keep member subscriptions affordable, as costs constantly rise even if the facility is on council leased land.

The site of the Shooting Centre was originally cleared and levelled by the Smallbore Rifle Club members, Mark Mulholland and the late Dudley Jarman, supported by many others. The creation of the structures for others to enjoy was a joint effort between Malvern NZDA and Smallbore Rifle Club members. Testament to the volunteer effort, even the earthquakes failed to impact the building, although the Smallbore range did not fare so well. It has since been rebuilt. As we reflect on 50 years as a Branch, we remember those who have passed and those who have

come and gone from the Club, done various good works whilst part of it, and served both the community and the country as a whole contributing to protecting our wonderful nature, while challenging themselves, feeding families and creating shared moments to treasure. On Monday, May 30th, Sheffield School had a visit from several members of the Mee family. Mr Mee Senior (aged 89) was Principal at Sheffield School from 1969 to 1971, his son Adrian and daughter Sharon both attended as students, and the family lived in the schoolhouse next door for the duration of their tenure in Sheffield. Mr Mee was delighted to have a look around the school and remarked on how much it had changed since his time here. He remarked, “In his day, there was no secretary or office administrator, and he had to

do all the administrative work himself.” “We managed to find some old minutes of the school committee meetings from 1969 that he was very interested in, and sent him home with a few copies to his

delight,” commented Karen Watson, Sheffield Contributing School, Office Administrator. The current Principal, Nigel Easson, was pleased to show the visitors around and answer their questions.

MECHANICAL SWAP MEET The Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet held at Hororata Domain on Saturday, May 28th, was hotly anticipated after being postponed three times in the past two years, and the event didn’t disappoint! 130 sellers rolled into the event as the sun rose, followed by 2,500 punters looking to find treasures to take home. “We were blown away with the numbers that attended the event, it is double the number of sellers and five times the number of buyers compared to past years,” commented organiser John Foster. “The Swap Meet community have missed out on coming together for the past two years. Along with finding that hard to find part or special piece of machinery, Swap Meets are about catching up with mates

get everyone in fast. We are lucky to have the Hororata Domain as a venue, there is not just plenty of space but options for how to manage a huge influx of people and vehicles. John Foster and Dave Pomare set up the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet in 2010 and have run it since then. This year they partnered with the Hororata Community Trust to help deliver the event. “We knew the Swap Meet had potential but it was hard for Dave and I to grow it, having the Trust on board has given us the structure we needed to really elevate the event. It still had the same heart and passion behind it but with systems in place, which meant we comfortably handled this massive growth. “The event is a good fundraiser for the community with the Hororata Historical Society, Terrace Station Charitable Trust, Hororata Parish and Hororata Community Trust all benefiting from the proceeds. For the first time in its 12-year history, the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet will be held twice in one year, returning in September, 2022. “We loved it so much, so let’s do it again!” concluded John.

A new bike park for Darfield is among eleven community projects in Malvern receiving a funding boost. The Westview Special Fund’s third round of funding has been announced, with $453,711.41 confirmed for a wide range of projects from the new bike park in Darfield to building renovations, repairs and upgrades to community facilities. The fund committee, which is a committee of the Selwyn District Council, administers the fund, which was established through the sale of land in Darfield. Sixteen applications were received, of which five were declined as they did not fully meet the criteria set by the Committee. The successful applications will support a range of sports and recreation groups with upgrades for the Malvern Squash Club, Darfield Tennis Club and Darfield Shooting Centre and a Darfield Bike Park. The funds will also support a range of community upgrades from town flags and CCTV cameras to building renovations

for the Darﬁeld Playcentre, Trinity Church, the Malvern Community Vehicle Trust and Community Patrol, Malvern Community Arts Council and Darﬁeld Baptist Church. The Committee again expressed its thanks to everyone who applied and said they were pleasantly surprised at the number and quality of applications received.

Committee Chair Councillor Bob Mugford said a fourth round of applications to the Westview Special Fund will be advertised in early June, with a closing date in early July 2022. The balance of the fund to be allocated stands at just under $320,000. The full list of funding recipients in the latest round are as follows:

NEW HOUSING FOR VEHICLES On Saturday, May 28th, the newly refurbished and revamped Sicon sheds behind the Darfield Library were opened as the new home for the five vehicles owned by the two voluntary organisations (Malvern Community Vehicle Trust and Malvern Community Patrol). The work done to upgrade the sheds was financed by the Westview Special Fund, for which both groups are very grateful. The official opening was conducted by Mayor Sam Broughton, and the premises were blessed by local Presbyterian Minister Lynmaree Sopoanga. Thanks went to council staff and Malvern Community Board due to their involvement in assisting both

groups. There was a morning tea afterwards with sandwiches appreciatively donated by Darﬁeld Bakery. The Malvern Community Vehicle Trust has been operating in the Malvern area since 2015 and offers a low-cost door to door transport service, for anyone needing transport assistance. In 2020, before Covid was a major factor, they carried 840 people over a combined distance of 50,775kms. In 2021 and 2022, those numbers were reduced. However, their volunteer drivers are fully vaccinated and still willing to serve the community in this way. The Malvern Community Patrol works closely with the local Police in carrying out regular

patrols over the whole Malvern area, to enhance community safety and security. To assist Police in combating the current spate of car thefts, the Patrol will be offering the thief-proof number plate securing system opposite Challenge Darﬁeld on Saturday, June 4th, from 9am till noon. Ex-Darﬁeld local musician Sam Heselwood has recently released another new single, ‘Don’t Speak’. Embodying the idea of ‘you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone’, ‘Don’t Speak’ was written after the passing of Sam’s Grandad. “After my Grandad passed away early last year, I started to reﬂect on the fact that I never had a lot to do with him. My Dad and his Dad didn’t get along that well and never really spoke. I started to think about how grateful I am to have the relationship I do with my Dad. That’s what sparked the idea to write ‘Don’t

It has been a moving and inspiring process working with the Darﬁeld Plunket team over the past few years. Our Chairperson, Sara Sime, has worked incredibly hard over several challenging years and announced to us (the committee) over a year ago, that she would see a new playground built and then step down from her role. This playground is a credit to Sara as she managed every stage of this project. I speak for all my committee members when I say that these past two years have been a challenging time to be pregnant, caring for newborns and toddlers. A pandemic, war, and growing climate issues makes for overtired, anxiety-ridden parents. Being on this team is our grounding, that constant reminder that no matter

how burdensome our greater existence is, we can be present with each other and those in our community listening for that whisper of goodness that we can be a part of. The previous playground was installed approximately twenty ﬁve years ago, one of our Darﬁeld librarians Barbara was on the committee then. My hope

and prayer for this playground is that it will see as many joyful, engaged happy children as the previous. No matter how great the burdens of life are, children need to play, and parents and caregivers need support. Lots of great information was available to those who Attended the DHS Careers Expo. Years 10 to 13 students made the most of the opportunity, to engage with thirty plus tertiary education and vocational providers from around New Zealand at the annual Darﬁeld High School Careers Expo on Tuesday, May 24th 2022. Many new providers were offering a range of learning opportunities, to encourage our students to widen their horizons and think beyond the obvious about their futures, and how they can acquire experience, qualiﬁcations and scholarships. One of these providers, Isaac Construction, will be back at the end of term for a two-hour ‘Great Futures Tour’, with further practical opportunities for students to take up in Terms 3 and 4. Representatives of the providers were very complimentary about the quality of our students' participation, interest and questions. It was obvious that students were getting the information and answers they needed to provide clarity on their chosen or intended path, what to expect, and how to go about obtaining their career and

vocational goals. For others, it was the chance to see what options there are, given the greater variety of providers present, coming away with invaluable information for their next steps at school and beyond. What was also notable, was the number of parents and caregivers in attendance, some with their students, others independently, gathering information for those next steps conversations at home. Darﬁeld High School thanks the providers for their positive contribution to our students' learning, development and potential. They are expected to return to next year's Careers Expo on Tuesday, May 23rd 2023, in the School Hall. The Careers team is always available for further conversations around options and pathway choices. The Malvern Community Board Meeting was held on Monday, May 23rd 2022 in the Darfield Library/Service Centre, with the Group Manager Environmental and Regulatory Services in attendance to assist and provide information. The Board heard that Council was successful in securing funding to improve tourism infrastructure for a further four sites – these include West Melton, Rolleston, Lincoln and Sheffield. Funding will go in particular towards public toilets and a dump station in Rolleston. The Board approved two grant applications from their Discretionary Funds. The first application was from the Greendale Community Trust to assist with the expenses around hosting a community meeting to discuss and form Greendale Community Committees. The second application was from the Malvern Community Vehicle Trust for signage for their new fleet vehicle. We need your applications for this funding. New funding will be available for the 2022/2023 year. Information is on the website listed below or talk to your Board member. The Board is planning to hold a Community Award ceremony this year. This will be advertised in media outlets and on Council’s website soon with a closing date around July 8th. Please consider nominating those hard workers that make Malvern a great place to live.
