A few early showers came down, but that didn’t dampen the children’s spirits at all with some great rugby being played. It was great to see numerous youngsters out there having a go, and it was especially great getting to watch some children play for the ﬁrst time. Nearly all junior teams played at home with a great crowd of parents and supporters cheering the children on. As the morning went on, the rain thankfully disappeared and the sun came out to provide excellent conditions for the three senior matches. The Colts had a great, hard fought 20-19 win over a much bigger Waihora side. Unfortunately, a serious injury to one of the Waihora players mid-match saw the game

moved from Field 2 out the back to Field 4. We wish that player all the best in his recovery and understand that he was cleared of any major injury. The Division 2 side had a wellfought but hard loss to a great Southbridge side. To finish the day, Division 1 (Darfield Ducks) took on an always strong Southbridge side for the McIlroy Sheat Cup. Fittingly, former Club President Scott McIlroy barged his way over the line in the final play of the game to give the massive crowd something to celebrate until the wee hours, as Darfield took the win 32-29. I’d like to thank everyone who came along to Club Day 2022, it was a great day with some great junior and senior results. I’d like

to make a special thanks to all those who helped make the day happen, James, Sarah, Michael, Pete and all other committee members, helpers and sponsors. ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of May, the Selwyn Art Exhibition will be held at the Rolleston Community Centre. The Exhibition will feature artists from all over the Canterbury region, but with a large number of local Selwyn, artists represented. There will be a range of art on display, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics and ﬁbre crafts. It will be the 20th annual Exhibition put on by the Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council. Asako Ridgen is a local Greendale artist who is looking forward to exhibiting again this year. Asako had always loved drawing from a young age. She attended art school in Japan for two years before moving to New Zealand and settling near Greendale. Asako now regularly exhibits her detailed handcarved linocut and woodcut

prints in local galleries and exhibitions, such as the Selwyn Art Exhibition. Asako’s art is usually inspired by cartoons, children's books, and manga (Japanese graphic novels) from her childhood. She is also influenced by ‘Ukiyo-e’ prints, a genre of traditional Japanese art that often features well-defined, bold lines. Asako loves being an artist in the Selwyn District. “I have made lots of friends through the art scene here. I often bump into my art friends all around Selwyn,” Asako commented. She is looking forward to seeing these familiar faces again at the Selwyn Art Exhibition. “Last year was my first time exhibiting there, and it was a great opportunity. Everyone was so relaxed and friendly,” Asako concluded. The Selwyn Art Exhibition is open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 21st and

NEW TEAM MEMBER Darﬁeld Physiotherapy and Gym would like to introduce their new team member Aaron Collin, who is a New Zealand trained Physiotherapist. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Aaron and his wife relocated from Auckland three weeks ago and have settled well into their new routines. Aaron is enjoying the change of pace and different work environment and has found everyone to be very welcoming and friendly. He is looking forward to exploring the Canterbury area, as well as seeing what the South Island has on offer, and is excited about the new venture. When time allows, he also plays football and cricket and likes to keep active in the gym. Aaron enjoys the role he plays in helping clients achieve their goals and improve their quality of life, while engaging with people from all walks of life. He has a passion for exercise based-rehabilitation, and focuses on function and developing strength. Aaron also uses various manual therapy techniques to assist with rehabilitation. He is

passionate about all aspects of Sports Physiotherapy and has special interests in shoulder, knee, ankle and overuse injuries, as well as pre and post-operative rehabilitation. Although he has particular interests and experience in football, cricket and baseball, he is interested in learning about the biomechanics and skills required in all sports. Aaron has worked in the National League with Eastern Suburbs Football Club and was

the Head Physiotherapist for Ellerslie Football Club, from 2019-2022. He is currently studying for a Post-Graduate Certiﬁcate in Sport, Exercise and Health through Auckland University. TE WAIORA HOUSE Te Waiora House is a Retreat Centre based in Hororata, which opened in 1986 as a ‘healing retreat’. People can go and put aside the stresses of life for some ‘time out’ in a beautiful rural location, with a lovely garden set on ten hectares. It is run by a nondenominational Christian Trust with a vision that Te Waiora be a place of rest, refreshment and renewal. The main building is purposebuilt with cosy bedrooms, a warm fire and peaceful surroundings. There is also a Prayer Hut that has a view of Mt Hutt, a Chapel and a wellresourced library. Guests can be catered for or can self-cater, and Te Waiora House welcomes individuals or groups, day visitors or overnight stays. Te Waiora is blessed by local community support, and Hosts Neil and Wendy Wanhill want to be a blessing back to the community! Te Waiora has a wonderful group of local volunteers who are amazingly generous, sending in their trucks to clear fallen trees, bringing their log splitters to boost firewood supplies, applying their skills to service the ride on mower, building a woodshed extension, and ensuring the fruit trees of the old orchard are being cared for. Neil and Wendy relocated from Auckland in October last year, and since arriving they have found the local community of Hororata welcoming and very kind. “We would love local Hororata people and wider Canterbury (and New Zealand) people to feel welcome here at Te Waiora, even if it is just to come and look around. We find that a lot of people think we are a religious place, a place for old people, or just somewhere that is probably nice but irrelevant to their lives. We want people to know that Te Waiora exists for everybody,” commented Wendy. “We have enjoyed hosting groups who were having a teambuilding day, groups who were having a reflective weekend away, Men’s Retreats, Women’s groups having craft days, Church leaders coming aside to have quiet time with God and

GIVE US A LIFT Broken River Ski Club has received a grant of $7,975 from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) for a new tow rope. The grant will allow the Club to purchase 2,900m of rope to replace the tow ropes on their Access/Rugby Tow and the Main Tow. New ropes will enable them to open this season and operate in a professional manner. Grants Officer Monique Bolweg said, “Broken River is a not for profit Ski Club, which is significantly suffering financially following Covid Lockdowns and reduced visitor numbers. This has impacted our financial ability to continue to purchase all our big ticket items - the Club has many expenses, and we are no longer able to cover them all. We require these ropes to continue to operate safely as a ski field and continue to offer a unique mountain experience to the people of Canterbury and beyond.” “The field is one of New Zealand's iconic not-for-profit ‘Club’ ski fields, where skiing evolved, long before there were commercial ski areas in the

South Island. Broken River began in the early 1950s with a passionate group of twelve founding members and grew to become a thriving Ski Club, with over four hundred members by the 1970s. “Over the last seventy years, hard voluntary work by willing club members with a strong ‘can do’ attitude has enabled the Club to build three accommodation lodges and two day lodges, as well as design and install ﬁve rope tows. More recently, Club members designed and installed the Tyndall Tramway - New Zealand’s only alpine funicular rail, which transports skiers from the car park to the ticket office and accommodation lodges. “One of the unique features of Club skiing is using rope tows to transport skiers and boarders up to the top of the slopes. Broken River has ﬁve high-speed rope tows that are powered by electric motors. Each rope tow consists of a long rope that is moved up the mountain on a series of pulleys on wooden standards. Each skier or snowboarder wears a belt with a

‘nutcracker’ clip attached to it. The rider clamps the nutcracker onto the tow rope and holds it tight, so it can then be moved up the mountain by the tow. Riding a rope tow requires some effort, but children as young as seven can master the art. At the top of the tow, the rider releases their nutcracker and steps off the tow, ready to ski/board down the slopes. “We offer affordable skiing without the crowds found at a commercial field. Small Club fields like Broken River offer young New Zealanders a chance to ski at cheaper rates (free until eleven years old) and the chance to ski very varied terrain and gain skills they may not necessarily gain at commercial fields. “Such skills include learning about snow safety, skiing ungroomed snow and access to back-country conditions in a safer environment. “We also run multi-day off-piste and avalanche courses providing new skills for people wanting to improve their skiing and knowledge of the backcountry,” concluded Monique.

SELWYN RIVER UPDATE What is Most Important About Our River? Healthy ecology and biodiversity, swimming, river management and ﬁshing, are the four most important things to the local community about the Upper Waikirikiri Selwyn River. These are some of the responses from the recent survey organised by the Upper Waikirikiri Selwyn River Catchment Group. One respondent added that, “it is the simple beauty of a clean river nearby that is important.” But, the survey also showed that there is wide-spread concern that many important qualities of the river are under

threat from toxic algal blooms, nitrogen levels, sewerage overﬂow, invasive weeds and animal species, sediment, turbidity and excessive shingle in the channels. Although these are seen as important concerns, respondents suggested several others such as the effect of irrigation water take, lack of control of domestic animals and even humans and 4x4 recreational use. The survey showed that there is plenty of enthusiasm in our community for caring for our river. Most people indicated that they are keen to join the

group and be involved in some way. It might be by taking part in physical activities such as working bees and planting days, workshops and field days, or helping with decision-making and planning strategies, or simply by keeping in touch and giving moral support. The first goal is to establish a group of interested locals to work out what the initial focus should be. This group aims to set long-term objectives, to plan effective strategies, local projects, and to gather information and seek financial support.

To the Editor: Just a reminder of what the ideologically driven Three Waters Legislation will do to our Selwyn ratepayers; • Deny a democratic process at both local and central Government level • Take 600 million dollars of SDC ratepayer assets • Give ratepayers worthless non -redeemable shareholding on the false pretext that somehow, we still have a say • Removed the right for our Council to opt-out of the process with the Minister mandating that all Councils SHALL be in • Impose 5 or more bureaucracies with 9,300 staff across the country that must be maintained, with up to 40% or more overhead all funded before any work can be done • Cost to ratepayers for water

services will, not surprisingly, increase when we were told that services will be cheaper • Because we have funded and maintained good water infrastructure, we will be subsiding poorly performing Councils • Expects ratepayers to believe the Government’s ﬂawed ﬁnancial model provides a solid business case • Enables the new Boards to make discretionary ex gratia payments that look very much like paying for water over and above services • Ratepayers still need to deal with stormwater meaning additional ongoing costs This just does not look like a good outcome for ratepayers and needs to be stopped in its current form. IT’S NOT ALL BAD NEWS Hi, my name is Jackie Derrick, and I have the pleasure of joining Property Brokers as the new Area Manager for Selwyn. I grew up in Rolleston, attended the local schools and returned to the area ﬁfteen years ago to commence my Real Estate career. I have certainly witnessed a lot of growth in the Selwyn region, and of course the normal peaks and troughs that all markets experience. Whilst we are reading the ongoing commentary regarding the current real estate market, we are aware that not all real estate commentary is generic to all parts of the country. It’s been pleasing to see through statistics but not surprising, that Canterbury may escape the sudden downturn in the housing

market that is being experienced elsewhere in the country. The latest House Value Index figures show the average property value in the region grew 2.9 percent ($22,000) over the quarter to $787,000. That is only slightly down on the 3.2 percent recorded in the three months to the end of March. Strong value growth in Selwyn and Waimakariri, 5.7 and 5 percent respectively has helped pull up the overall figure. That said, it’s no secret that inflation and restrictive bank lending is having an impact on the number of buyers in the market, which is translating to lessor number of attendees at open homes resulting in properties remaining on the market for longer. It’s reassuring to know that our

HOPING FOR CHANGE On May 11th a constituent from Darﬁeld, Danielle Petrie, visited Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg at Parliament to deliver her petition, asking to consider sending all youth driving charges where death has resulted to the District Court rather than Youth Court. The petition is in response to the experience Danielle had in the Youth Court after her husband Craig tragically lost his life while out training on his bike, caused by a driver who was months away from being eighteen. “It’s great to see the courage and determination in ﬁghting for this change, and I look forward to seeing how the petition progresses through Parliament,”

commented Nicola Grigg. “Last week, (May 11th), was the eighteen month anniversary of Craig’s death; I presented the petition on the steps of Parliament to Nicola, who agreed to submit it to the House of Representatives. We then listened as the Clerk of the House announced the petition,” commented Danielle. “The next step is that the House will refer it to a select committee for consideration. I hope we can make a positive change to the New Zealand justice system from the tragedy our family has experienced. “Thank you to everyone that has supported me and my children, Kendall and Boden, along this

process. Craig always fought ﬁrmly for what he believed was right, and I will carry on that strong trait of his,” Danielle concluded.

The 2022 Tranzalpine Scooter Safari taking place on Saturday, May 21st, is an endurance ride on motorised scooters going coast-to-coast over the stunning Southern Alps. Participants ride 250km from Christchurch to Hokitika to help try and create a future with less cancer by supporting the Cancer Society with this fundraiser. Every dollar raised through Scooter Safari will go towards cancer care across New Zealand, education and awareness programmes and life-saving cancer research. The Scooter Safari is one of the coldest, longest, hardest, most gruelling tests of endurance on a city scooter, but is nothing in comparison to the challenges people face in their cancer journey. The Scooter Safari was created in 2009 by Jayne and Mike Rattray, born in support of a friend (Blair) diagnosed with bowel cancer. They were also supported originally by Damion Haines, Ben Walker and Wayne Cook. From humble beginnings, the ﬁrst ride saw 32 riders make the maiden voyage raising $14,000 in donations for the Cancer Society. Since then, the event has snowballed with over 250 scooters taking part each year and raising over $1.4 Million

dollars for the cause. Blair was a quick witted, funny guy who didn't complain about his lot-in-life, but instead lived it to the full everyday and encouraged others to do the same. He loved pimping his scooters and making his own costumes and rode in 2 of the 4 events as the Stig and Elvis. When Blair was diagnosed with bowel cancer, his mates decided they would band together and create the greatest ‘Pain in the Ass’ fundraiser they could think of to honour his cancer journey. Blair passed in 2014, surrounded by family. His ﬁnal words to everyone, “If you think something’s not right down there, go to the doctor, get checked, and get in early. It

could save your life!” Stage one: the scooters travel from the start at the Vintage Car Club, McLeans Island, along the Old West Coast road to the famous Sheffield Pie Shop. Stage two: the scooters will make their way up Porters Pass to Lake Lyndon. Stage three: from Lake Lyndon riders make their way through Castlehill basin to Arthur's Pass. Stage four: from Arthur's Pass riders then make their way through the stunning Otira Viaduct towards Kumara Racecourse. West Melton based Nicola Garlick is looking forward to taking part in the Scooter Safari again. Both of Nicola’s parents were taken before their time due to cancer, her Dad at 64 years old and her Mum at 66 years old. This year Nicola has turned her Scooter into the Flintstone’s car, and this design has special meaning to her. “I knew I was going to do the Flintstone’s car for this ride as Dad made one over a four-wheel motorbike back in the early 90’s for the Westport Christmas Parade, so it is very fitting,” commented Nicola. “I'm super happy with how it's turned out. Now, let's just hope she makes it up the hill,” concluded Nicola. SMOOTH MOVE FOR DAIRY DAY June 1st annually marks the ﬁrst day of the dairy season. Whilst many are hunkering down for winter, thousands of dairy families, sharemilkers, contract milkers and employees are moving to new farms to commence new enterprises, employment and milking contracts. Such movement of people, their possessions, livestock and machinery is a critical part of the dairy industry and is commonly known as ’Dairy Day’. To ensure Dairy Day runs smoothly for all involved, signiﬁcant planning and preparation is undertaken in the preceding months. Bonnie grew up in Christchurch but often spent time with family in Timaru on their farm. She is a qualiﬁed chef by trade, however, she has spent the last thirteen years in banking. In 2006, Andrew and Bonnie decided to move to Australia, and lived and worked in Perth for seven years, and had their two boys. In 2013, they moved back to New Zealand to be closer to family, and so their children could go to school here. The transition from pervious owners Chris and Dawn O’Donnell has gone relatively smoothly. “We would like to thank Chris and Dawn for giving us this opportunity. We have enjoyed, and we look forward to meeting all existing and new clients,” Bonnie commented. The pair are doing their best to keep to the approximate time of year that clients usually get their hedges completed. However, there may be times when they have to change this slightly, but they will be in contact with clients, when they are in their area, to see if they require their hedges done.
