VCC MALVERN ANZAC DAY RUN Just like last year, organisers of Anzac Day services and events would have had a close watch on the weather as southerlies and rain came through Canterbury on the eve of Anzac Day. Fortunately, Anzac morning dawned to a brilliantly sunny autumn day, and no disruptions were experienced.

This was certainly the case at the Darfield Recreation Centre,

where vintage car enthusiasts and their supporters gathered for the start of the annual Malvern Run. This Run takes vintage and veteran cars, many over 100 years old, past the Cenotaphs of Darfield, Sheffield, Hororata, Glenroy and Glentunnel and back to Darfield. A route of about 80kms.

The pre-start at the Darfield Recreation Centre brought a good crowd of locals who came to see some wonderful old cars and the opportunity to talk to their owners.

The same occurred at the lunch stop at the Glentunnel Community Centre, where

everyone chose to have lunch outdoors amongst the spectacular autumn colours.

Fortunately, all of the cars and a solitary Douglas motorcycle ridden by Percy Ralston of Ashburton completed the 80km round trip without the indignity of riding in the backup trailer.

It was another successful day thanks to the support of our sponsors Dutton Garage, Malvern News and their advertisers, the Vintage Car Club will again be in a position to donate to the local RSA. Malcolm McGibbon, Organiser.

INTERWOVEN Interwoven, Te Huanui’s exhibition for the month of May, highlights connections among our artists, their surroundings and those in it and the Selwyn district. Featuring photography

by Jason Berge, Berge paintings by his daughter Maddie Berge and glassworks by Colleen Eason, Eason Lorraine Natusch and Vanja Venrooy.

Venrooy Christchurch based artist Colleen Eason comes to Te Huanui with an extensive background in the arts sector. Colleen’s initial arts practice was in sculpture and printmaking, her current works are in cast glass. As part of her studying in cast glass under coexhibitor Lorraine Natusch, Colleen’s beehives cast in gaffer glass in a mixture of colours reference factors affecting our macro ecologies.

Vanja Venrooy’s passion for glass began with a short course in stained glass windows twenty years ago, much later finding glass fusing.

Self-taught in fusing, Vanja runs her creative business Roxtar Glass Art. Initially, her focus was on small functional pieces such as plates and bowls alongside jewellery. Recently she has transitioned her focus from craft to art, elevating her creations ‘off the table’ and onto the wall or shelf. Inspired by glass tapestry techniques to create designs and

patterns a little outside of the box.

Jason Berge moved to Selwyn from Auckland six years ago for a change of pace. As a professional photographer, he also takes photographs in his spare time. Being new to the region, Jason has been exploring and documenting rural architecture before it disappears (at least two of the buildings in the exhibition are now gone). Finding interesting subjects in various states of decay has become an ongoing project before history makes way in the name of the project.

Maddie Berge moved to Darfield six years ago, enjoying creating artwork at Darfield High School before entering Ilam School of Fine Arts. Maddie’s works are from a serious in her second year of the painting program, exploring the relationship/ juxtaposition between things considered grotesque and things considered beautiful.

Lorraine Natusch has been casting glass for eighteen years, now based out of her grandfather’s historically listed stables turned studio, in Darfield.

Lorraine has studied art and design along with glass casting, continuing to develop her techniques in her evolving practice. Her works for

Interwoven feature works from her ‘Home is Where the Heart is’ journey, mushrooms developed from her well known red Amarita Muscaria, alongside other current pieces.

Interwoven opens on Friday, April 29th and runs until Thursday, May 26th. Te Huanui is currently not holding openings at the gallery but intends to in the near future.

ALBI & THE WOLVES WILL HOWL Albi and the Wolves create a huge sound using only an acoustic guitar, an electric violin, a double bass, their three voices, and a stomp. ADVENTURE RACING Darfield High School’s (DHS) Adventures Racing teams competed in the South Island Secondary School (SISS) Race on Sunday, April 24th, in Kaikoura.

These students are very new to Adventure Racing and for some, this was their first experience and the results show their resilience and determination.

“Thank you to the parents for your support and encouragement. We will be on the lookout for more Adventure Racing opportunities in the future,” commented DHS Sport Co-ordinator, Pip Deans.

To the Editor: Regarding the state of the grounds at Hororata Hall and Hororata Reserve.

Firstly, congratulations to the Hororata Returned Services Association and Revered Jenni Carter for their inspiring Memorial Service for the tribute to all our Servicemen who fought for our country.

Having attended the ANZAC Day Service at the Hororata Memorial Hall on Monday, 25 April 2022, attendees at the Service were appalled at the state of the grounds of the Hall, which was considered an insult to our Returned Servicemen and their families who served our country and gave their time to voluntarily maintain the

surrounding grounds of the Hororata Hall and the Hororata Reserve.

We have lost control of the care and maintenance of both the Hall and the Hororata Reserve, which is also in an appalling state.

This Reserve, the oldest in New Zealand, was created by volunteers and the tradition carried on by their families and other community members over the past 144 years.

Under Selwyn District Council Management, these wonderful assets have deteriorated and the Community would like to see the grounds returned to their former glory.

FANTASTIC MUSIC OPPORTUNITY ‘On the Road’, is a group of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra musicians who will be holding a free music workshop, for music enthusiasts over the age of ten, from Darfield and the surrounding areas. This event will take place on Thursday, May 5th at 3:30pm, and will be held at the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre. Registrations are required. No prior musical experience is necessary, and participants can either bring their own instruments or use the drums, ukuleles and chime bars that will be provided.

Prior to this, the group of musicians will be holding a demonstration and interactive project for students at Glentunnel and Windwhistle Schools. After lunch, the group

will go to Westmar Senior Care Centre to deliver an intimate house concert to residents.

“This is a part of the Orchestra's Community Engagement Programme, where our musicians take live music experiences to people in the community, wherever they might be.

Previously, we have performed in several Selwyn Libraries for New Zealand Music Month, but in 2022 we decided to try something new with support

from the Selwyn Libraries and District Council.

BE VIGILANT Canterbury Police are advising owners of Mazda Demios and Toyota Aquas to be vigilant, following a series of thefts targeting these car models across the wider Canterbury area.

Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells urges people to take preventative measures to keep their car from being stolen.

“The ignition systems in these models are not as robust as others, so once an offender gains entry to the car they can be taken relatively easily, Damon

commented.

“They also don't have immobilisers by default, we'd recommend that anyone who owns one of these vehicles gets one installed.

“An immobiliser can cost up to $500, but if your vehicle is stolen you are likely to pay a similar amount on excess on your insurance, let alone the inconvenience of having your vehicle stolen and the associated hassle of cancelling credit cards, etc.

“In addition, ensure valuables and credit cards are removed from vehicles at night, particularly if cars are parked in the open. The best option still remains to have your vehicle garaged if possible,” Damon concluded.

Police are committed to actively investigating vehicle theft and holding offenders to account.

Anyone that sees suspicious activity around vehicles can call Police on 111 if it’s happening or 105 after the incident.

ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS Orienteering is a family affair for the Thrower family, with Dad Gordon and Mum Jocelyn, Jocelyn having been involved for fifteen years, and children William and Caitlyn since they were three years old. Gordon and Jocelyn would guide and then shadow the children around easy courses.

At about eight years old they were able to navigate the easier courses by themselves. The family were introduced to the sport through friends and have enjoyed being involved ever since.

Recently at Easter weekend, William and Caitlyn competed at the 2022 New Zealand Orienteering Championships that were held in the Nelson/Tasman Region.

William, a Year 7 student at Darfield High School, competed in the M12 (Men’s 12) age group.

He successfully won his Long Course and came away with the National Waitemata Trophy for his age group. He also placed second in the Sprint Race and

third in the Middle Distance Race.

The Sprint Race was around Nelson College and surrounds, and the Middle and Long Distance Races were held up at Canaan Downs, at the top of Takaha Hill, in a mixture of native bush and grasslands with impressive rock formations and sinkholes.

“I found the course fun and challenging, with interesting terrain. I enjoyed the great social environment and made new friends. I am looking forward to a more challenging grade next year and the Mountain Biking Orienteering next month at Bottle Lake,” William commented.

Caitlyn, a Year 4 student at Kirwee Model School, competed for the first time at Nationals in the W10 (Women’s 10) age group, achieving two seconds and a third place.

“I found the courses tiring, challenging but enjoyable. I am looking forward to going faster and finding the controls easier,” Caitlyn commented.

The family all race as part of the PAPO Club (Peninsula and Plains Orienteering Club). The Club puts on training days throughout the year, and Club Events help build up navigational skills. “Often you learn from the mistakes you make and at the end of courses, going over the course map with more experienced orienteers who openly share their knowledge,” commented Jocelyn.

“We find orienteering is a great family sport, as we can all go out and compete on our various courses at the same time, often with three generations of families competing. It is mentally and physically challenging, you

can choose to be competitive or just go out and enjoy the experience, sometimes in amazing locations around the country. It builds personal confidence in the children in their own ability to solve problems and to preserve when it goes wrong. You don't always have to be the fastest runner to win an event, it is about the best route course to a control.

“We have local club competitions next month at Waikari, and a Mountain Biking Orienteering Event at Bottle Lake. Nonmembers of the Club are more than welcome to enter Club events, there are courses for all abilities from beginners to experienced. PAPO Club runs events all around Canterbury throughout the year. If you want to give orienteering ago but do not want to come along to events, PAPO has permanent courses that people can try. It is also a great activity if the children are bored over the holidays and need to get rid of some energy,” Jocelyn concluded.

SELWYN MP UPDATE You could almost hear a collective tightening of belts last week. Inflation has hit a new 30year high of 6.9%. In a race we didn’t want to win, we are now outpacing Australia and many other countries.

Rents are up, interest rates are rising, and wage increases are barely a third of inflation. Kiwis are going backwards and many families are struggling to make ends meet.

A December 2021 Quarterly Economic Monitor (QEM) from Infometrics showed that Selwyn’s economy strengthened through to the end of the year, with GDP growth sitting at 7.8% pa, which was higher than in New Zealand (5.5%pa) and Canterbury (7.2%pa).

The monitor highlighted that employment of Selwyn residents has been relatively strong too, up 2.9% over the past year, compared to a 1.3% increase for the Canterbury region.

Selwyn continues to be an attractive destination to move to for residents and businesses alike. The QEM noted that

residential building consents for the quarter were 429, following on from 443 in the same quarter last year. This shows the continued growth.

But, the one blight on an otherwise pretty-good report card was, once again, inflation.

Infometrics noted that even here, costs and interest rates are putting pressure on businesses.

While predictions have varied wildly, the think tank predicted the Selwyn District’s GDP to shrink by 0.9% over the year to March 2021, and 0.7% over the year to March 2022. The largest declines in economic activity are predicted to take place in the construction industry, with GDP down by $48m or 25% between 2020 and 2022.

It’s that overall economic recovery that should be keeping the Finance Minister awake at night. Particularly after Reserve Bank Governor, Adrian Orr said, “central banks grappling with inflation need support in the form of more targeted effective fiscal policies as he acknowledged New Zealand’s

central bank is not in a great place now as it works to get inflation under control.”

The Finance Minister must heed this warning.

It’s not credible for Grant Robertson to keep claiming inflation is a mysterious visitor from overseas over which he has no control. This is not just an international story. The domestic ‘non-tradable’ element of inflation is the highest on record, at 6%.

He must do his bit to remove inflationary pressure in the domestic economy: stop adding costs to business, quit wasteful spending and remove bottlenecks to productive growth.

This is absolutely not the time to put fuel on the fire with the biggest Budget spending allowance in history, a whopping $6 billion, which he has foreshadowed for his May Budget.

The OECD and many bank economists have already warned against expansionary Government spending policies.

The Reserve Bank’s plea for help should be the final straw. New Zealand is in the midst of a cost of living crisis, and the Government needs to support efforts to bring things under control, not make things worse.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB NEWS On Saturday, April 23rd Malvern Rifle Club hosted the Canterbury Champion of Champions Meeting, where the winner and runner-up of each Malvern Rifle Club class competes in their class against the Champions from the Ashburton and Districts Rifle Club over 300, 500 and 600 yards with 10 counting shots at each distance.

The F-Open competition, was held over as one of the competitors was at home isolating.

A target was also available for other shooters who weren’t competing in the Champion of Champions match.

It was a hot, fine day with a gusty norwest wind, with frequent shifts of angle and pressure to provide a challenge to the shooters. As shooting began at 600 yards, shadows began moving across the target increasing the difficulty for the Target Rifle shooters.

The competition was tight amongst the A Grade Target Rifle competitors, with scores very close after the first two ranges.

Allan White’s White consistently high quality shooting saw him win the A Grade. John Miller shot well to dominate the B Grade. In the FTR, Mark Alexander shot consistently to move from last to first over the three ranges.

The National Tennis Championships were held over Easter in Hawkes Bay. The Canterbury Country 60 plus Men’s team finished second equal with North Harbour after beating Bay of Plenty, the highly fancied Auckland team, Waikato, Thames

Valley and South Auckland and then drawing with Wellington/ Kapiti/Hutt. The two losses to North Harbour and Western Bay of Plenty cost them the title. The weather and comradeship between teams were great. The team managed to hold it

VISION FOR HORORATA The Hororata community has been working together since 2017 on the development of a new facility that will provide for future generations. The need for a community facility in Hororata has been proven in two independent studies, one carried out by Octa Associates in 2017 and the other by Gruden Consultants in 2021.

The original plan was for a new facility on the Hororata Domain, however, with the Council making significant changes to this project in the Long-Term Plan in 2021 and changing the funding structure to be unworkable, Go Hororata went back to the drawing board to come up with a solution which is going to have the best outcome for the community with the resources available.

Go Hororata Chair Craig Blackburn commented, “What hasn’t changed is that we need a hub that will connect private and public organisations providing the community with a platform to grow, share and unite. The physical buildings will give the springboard for new opportunities around the whole community.”

But, what become obvious in the past twelve months is that this type of hub is not possible to develop with Council involvement. We need to be able to be flexible to stage the project and use our wider support network to develop this hub. Unfortunately, this is not possible to do with the Selwyn

Council, and we believe we will get a better outcome for our area and the wider district by developing this project as a community.

One of the priorities for Go Hororata is to protect the Hororata Museum’s collection.

This is a unique and significant collection that tells the stories of the pioneers who first established this area. The current museum building has degraded to a state of disrepair, and the collection is now at risk.

“The option of repurposing part of the existing Hororata Hall as the museum was something the Hororata Historical Society and Go Hororata engaged consultants to explore; keeping in mind the wider and greater needs of the community such as space for Playcentre, meetings, events, school activities, access to technology and a place to gather.

“Going through this process confirmed what we already knew and painted a far bigger picture as it became obvious that we need to create a hub that connects our past, present and future surrounding the existing Hororata Hall and land.

“The result is that we will develop a modern vibrant community hub that retains heritage and provides for community needs now and into the future. This hub will be centred around the existing Hororata Hall and its site. The hub will provide fantastic facilities for the community to

use and be a destination for people to visit; the opportunities are endless. The very generous offers of financial support we have now and a well-thoughtout brief means our community can achieve this.

“The first step is to get the Hororata Hall and land back into community control. We are lucky to have the Hororata Community Trust as a charitable entity already set up in the community to manage this process. We already have $1 million committed to the project and are simply asking the Council to honour their commitment to Hororata by investing the $1 million which was allocated in the Long-Term Plan. The community will then be responsible for developing and maintaining this asset. There is no impact to rates so we really hope people right around Selwyn support the proposal in the Annual Plan,” Craig concluded.

There will be a public meeting in the Hororata Hall Wednesday, May 4th, at 7pm to elect the new Residents Committee.

This new group will amalgamate with Go Hororata and replace the Hororata Reserve and Citizens committees that are being dissolved as committees of the Council. People will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Community Hub at this meeting.

Hororata Residents Committee Inaugural AGM Called by the Hororata Reserve and Citizens Committee

Wednesday 4th May - 7pm. Hororata Hall The Selwyn Council has made changes to the Committees of Council and in June the Hororata Reserve and Citizens Committees will be disbanded.

A new Hororata Residents committee will be formed. Representatives will be nominated and voted on at this inaugural AGM. This committee will be a recognised stakeholder of the Selwyn Council providing a link between the community and the Council.

COUNCIL OWNED CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION COMPANY RATED BEST IN CANTERBURY Selwyn infrastructure company CORDE has been recognised as Canterbury’s best contractor company.

CORDE (Formerly Sicon Limited & Blakely Construction) won the Civil Construction New Zealand (CCNZ) Canterbury Contractor of the Year Supreme Award at the CCNZ Canterbury awards earlier this month.

The Selwyn District Council owned civil contractor also won the CCNZ Canterbury Environmental Award for the second year in a row for its work on the Wanaka Lakefront Development. CCNZ is the leading industry body for civil construction representing over 600 companies around Aotearoa.

The award recognised the high quality of CORDE’s work and its delivery of projects across a wide range of projects across the South Island and in a wide variety of work from construction to maintenance of water infrastructure, parks and reserves and resource recovery. The environmental award recognised the company’s commitment to going beyond what was asked for by clients in its environmental focus, and its innovation in work around the Lake Wanaka waterfront to protect the lake and wildlife, and working with the community.

It was a well-earned reward for the company’s work in recent years, CORDE Chief Executive David Wilson commented.
