Last weekend, a keen group of traction engine owners planned a two-night excursion, as most events they usually attend have been cancelled in recent times due to Covid-19. The group are predominately members of the Southbrook Traction Engine Club, but this was a privately organised event by Halkett local Gray Calder. The Calder family have a long history with traction engines through using them in the past for farming work and still own about half a dozen of them. The group meet at Derek Bull’s place in Waddington on Friday evening, where they enjoyed meeting locals, showing them their engines, and sharing a barbeque with those that popped along to have a look. On Saturday they headed through Pig Saddle to Whitecliffs, down through Glentunnel, stopping for lunch at the Coalgate Saleyards before

heading to Andrew Gillanders’ place in Darﬁeld for the night. The group then made their way home on Sunday. Those who took part in this informal event travelled from Clarkville, Leeston, Halkett, Yaldhurt area and Sheffield. The group have been looking for excuses to get out and about lately, and they loved the fact that this wee adventure gave plenty of opportunities for locals to see the engines. The engines can travel between 10-20km an hour and must have a boiler certiﬁcation every couple of years. The engines are very well kept, and the standard of appearance is extremely high nowadays as they are more show and preserving history rather than working as they did in the earlier days. The group hope to have a few more excursions like this in the near future.

Hours and hours of driving (2,500 km travelled), hundreds of horses viewed and some lifelong memories were made on a trip of a lifetime recently. Local equestrian family, the Thompson’s took two horse trucks and twelve people away on this exciting adventure. The group convoyed up to Ruatoria (a town in the Waiapu Valley in the Gisborne Region on the northeastern corner of the North Island) together to look for horses with aim of bringing home some raw talent. Horses have given this family so many opportunities over the years, but this trip was an amazing, thrill-seeking experience for everyone involved.

Some horses roamed around the roads, others were tied up by a rope and some were mustered in for them to view. They also had to do some door knocking at the beginning. All up they would have looked at around 500 horses in the ﬁve days they were there. As all good adventures go, not everything went to plan! “We had a blowout on the way, four of us got bucked off test riding some horses and the trucks came home with a few dents, but these things made the trip real,” the Thompson girls said smiling. “It was a hard decision to pick what ones we should bring home, but we had a fair idea what we were looking for. We picked out twelve horses (four

Five of these horses are broken in and the rest are unhandled, this will keep us busy for a while. “They all have different personalities, and some are going to test our skills, but with a bit of trust and time they will come round to it,” they concluded. WHEELS & WINGS After not being able to run Wheels and Wings for a couple of years, and with ECan stopping the popular Mud Plug, Sheffield Fire Brigade is delighted that Covid restrictions for outdoor events have lifted. They are excited to be running another Wheels and Wings for all to enjoy on May 1st (weather dependant, postponement date May 8th). They have a good number of stall-holders who will be displaying all sorts of items. There will be plenty of hot food and drink available from Malvern Lions, Sheffield School and The Coffee Man. There will be a great selection of model planes to see, and hopefully, they will be able to put on a aerial display. Like past years there will be a fantastic display of cars from old to new for everyone to view. The planes, helicopters and gliders

are a big drawcard also. The New Zealand Fire Service will have their kitchen fire display, as well as their evacuation tunnel for the children. Darfield Fire Brigade will also be offering rides on their Vintage Fire Engine. If you would like to have an enjoyable day out at a reasonable price then head along, there will be something for all ages. Not often people can view numerous cars and planes in the same area at the same time. “With Charlie and Jo Draper selling their property, the Sheffield Fire Brigade would like to give them an extra special thanks and recognise them for all the work and help they have put into this event over numerous years,” commented Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief, Nev Croy. “The work Charlie and Jo have done behind the scene is huge,

and organising their working farm so we could hold our show is amazing. Even though Charlie is leaving the farm he is still one of the main organisers. Without his commitment and contacts, the show would not have been the success it has been. I’m sure everyone who has attended knows how privileged we have been. “We would like to thank new owners Peter Morrison and Liz Nattrass for their support by letting us continue running the show on their property. It is an important fundraiser for the Fire Brigade, and other organisations and businesses may also benefit. “Please come along and support this locally run show, you are sure to have a fantastic day out. METHVEN SCARECROW TRAIL Fantastic school holiday event There are sponsored prizes for some great ideas for their the most correct entries, as well creations. The scarecrow makers in Methven. The Methven Scarecrow Trail is a hugely popular and fun family event run in the April school holidays (April 16th - May 1st), suitable for all ages. Being a small group outdoor event it can run safely even during Covid restrictions. Every year, members of the Methven community build scarecrows to a particular theme and these scarecrows, usually around forty, are scattered around the town for families to ﬁnd and try to identify the name of the character represented by the different characters. Families or small groups purchase a Trail Map/Entry form from the Methven iHub Information Centre, with proceeds from the sale of the maps going to a local charity. The Trail Maps are only $10 for the group, cash only. The organisers recommend one map per 3-4 people, but some families like to buy one each to increase their odds of winning a prize!

The Trail is designed to be an activity that can be done easily by walking the route, with a well -timed stop for lunch, within a day, but some groups prefer to spread it over several days if they can. The organisers love seeing groups of children of all ages, often with parents and/or grandparents for added input, out walking with their maps trying to guess the correct identities of the scarecrows. The scarecrows are all located within the town boundaries for safe walking but some young children ﬁnd the distances a bit long unless they use bikes or scooters. Some groups like to walk the route in the central village and then use the car to ﬁnd the more remote scarecrows if the small children (or adults) are tired. The theme this year is ‘Characters from Children’s Television Shows’, and the talented scarecrow makers have

range from the talented and artistic, to the enthusiastic and willing which include business owners, families and school or preschool children. While in Methven for the Trail there are some other great activities to do also, the new Opuke Hot Pools are worth a visit, the Enchanted Forest Walk (to ﬁnd where the fairies live) and the Piwakawaka Walk (to ﬁnd fantails) are all great activities for the holidays. So, mark the dates in your calendar and head to Methven for the Scarecrow Trail.

Selwyn District Council has reaffirmed it will continue to advocate for quality water services and better outcomes for Selwyn residents, as the Government pushes ahead with their proposed three waters reforms. At its meeting last week the Council conﬁrmed its determination to advocate as an independent voice for the interests of Selwyn residents and to push for changes to the reforms that better meet local needs. The Council continues to oppose the direction of the proposed Government reforms and is concerned about their impact on water services for Selwyn residents.

“We accept there needs to be change, however, we don’t agree that the current three waters proposal is the best or only way forward,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton. “The Government has done a poor job at communicating the need for change in Selwyn, and we publicly expressed our disapproval to them last year. “We are disappointed at the Government’s disregard for councils and local communities in the way it has run this process so far. We are also frustrated by the poor response over key questions we have raised with Government about the reforms. “We will continue to be a strong and independent voice speaking out for Selwyn people, to make sure they get the best outcome from these reforms. The Council’s focus will be on ensuring its concerns are addressed and on shaping the outcome of the reforms so that the district continues to receive excellent water services. The Council also committed to working constructively with mana whenua to ensure the best possible outcomes for Selwyn. They will be reviewing the recommendations of the Working Group on

Representation, Governance and Accountability of New Water Services Entities and continuing to seek important information that has not yet been answered, to further shape its work. “Water is the most important asset for the district and communities need to be able to have a say in the way their services are delivered that takes account of the unique nature of their water supplies. “In Selwyn, we have over 30 water supplies each with unique challenges. We have invested heavily in water infrastructure and overall we have an excellent service. “This means when we have individual challenges, such as the complex ones we face at the moment in Springﬁeld, we can work directly with local residents, using our local knowledge, and we are directly accountable to see through the long-term work that is required to address those issues. “We need to see accountability in the reforms that ensure that Selwyn residents don’t lose that local voice and assurances that our people will see their needs met. That is what we will be working for - for Selwyn residents to get a service that continues to deliver for all of us,” Sam concluded.

To the Editor: Farm life and green pastures! What a fantastic season it has been for grass and cropping farmers alike. A bit like the good old days. Sadly with moisture levels above average - the unwanted weeds and thistles follow! Fact. It can be very scary watching them spread, not to mention the added expense to spray them out, but control is “good practice” and makes happy neighbours. Fact. When the nor-wester blows “clouds” of “thistle-down” rain down in lower Glentunnel. Where we differ is how we think we should represent those concerns. Not joining the Communities for Local Democracy (C4LD) will allow us to retain a strong and independent voice that speaks out for the Selwyn people and makes sure we get the best outcome from these reforms. Joining C4LD will limit what we can say and ties us to a collective narrative. I believe, like the majority of other Councils across New Zealand, that we should retain the ability to deal with the Government on our own terms. I am determined that Selwyn residents don’t lose their local voice and to provide assurances that our people will see their needs met. That is what we will be working for – for Selwyn residents to get a service that continues to deliver for all of us.

The motion to join the Communities for Local Democracy Group consisting of 32 out of 67 Councils was defeated by the Mayor’s casting vote. That is a democratic process and no argument from me about that. There is however some irony in that the Mayor has used the

As noted previously, the spread of Covid-19 within the Malvern District resulted in the decision to again hold this meeting remotely. Board drop-in sessions around the Ward are on hold for some months as well. An assessment of options to provide potable water to the Springfield Township is underway. However, there is not likely to be a rapid solution, and the public facilities for washing and drinking water will remain in the Township. We thank the consumers on this water supply for their patience. Other projects around the Malvern Ward include: • An upgrade of facilities for the Darfield Pool over the winter to enable patrons to have a different experience in a fun environment. More information on the upgrade will be available in future months. • Extension of the Darfield Fire Station by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. • Improvements to the rest area at the Joyce Reserve, Glentunnel and Lake Lyndon through funding from the Tourism and Infrastructure Fund. • The original Darfield Toilets will be replaced in 2023/24 and the toilets at the Waimakariri Reserve will be upgraded. • Distribution of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATS) to remote communities using the Council’s Community Response Team. Work continues to find acceptable solutions to the restructure of our community committees with a date of June 30th for action. Public meetings will be held in each community in the future to discuss solutions, and we ask you to support your district. It is likely that the solutions found will be individual to each community. The Board approved one grant application from the Selwyn Women’s Issues Group for funding towards the cost of meetings for 2022. Funding is still available for community projects. We need your applications as this funding is only available until June 30th. However, new funding will be available for the 2022/2023 year. Information is on the website listed below or talk to your Board member.

The Board’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 26th 2022 at 4pm with a change of day due to Anzac Day on the Monday. This Board meeting will be recorded and available to listen to on the Council website. Over the weekend of March 26th and 27th, two local Darﬁeld High School indoor target shooters, Piper Benbow and Ryan Booth, were competing at the 2021 North vs South Indoor Competition. It was originally to be held in August 2021 with all competitors travelling to Christchurch but got postponed to March this year due to Covid restrictions at the time. The format was changed slightly to make travel easier, with the South Islanders competing in Christchurch and the North Islanders in Palmerston North. To be in this Competition, teams of shooters are selected for North Island and South Island teams based on Championship scores shot between April and July each year. Saturday’s shooting involved the South Island teams competing against the North Island teams. The top shooters from Saturday’s Competition then qualify for their respective New Zealand Team(s), shooting on Sunday as a Postal Match against the United Kingdom Home Counties. The initial teams are made up of shooters who have been nominated for the North vs South Competition and consist of:Open - 20 members, Women - 15 members, Men - 15 members, Junior - 10 members and Veteran - 10 members.

Each team also has 2 emergency people selected. Ryan was selected for the Junior South Island team and Piper was selected as an emergency for the South Island Junior team and made the South Island Women’s team. On Saturday, they shot a single card (10 counting shots per card), then a double card, then another single card, giving a maximum possible score of 400.40: Piper’s results: 99.04, 198.08 and 100.08 (=397.20) Ryan’s results: 95.02, 197.10 and 100.04 (=392.16) With these fantastic scores, Ryan and Piper both qualiﬁed for the New Zealand Junior team. Piper top scored for the South Island team and was 1 point off captain for the New Zealand Junior team, (the captain is based off the top scorer out of both the South

Island and North Island teams). She also qualiﬁed for the New Zealand Women’s team, shot on Sunday morning. These matches consisted of a single and a double card, giving a maximum possible score of 300: Piper’s results: 99 and 195 (New Zealand Junior) and 99 and 198 (New Zealand Women) Ryan’s results: 99 and 196 (New Zealand Junior) We are also pleased to say the South Island Junior team bet the North Islander Junior team (by only 3 points). Lindsay Smith Malvern Rifle Club Patron and Life Member passed away on March 17th, 2022. Lindsay was the last surviving foundation member of the Club, having been a member since it was formed in 1953. He had held many offices within the Club over that time. He gained representative Honours for the Malvern Rifle Club, the Canterbury Association, the South Island on a tour to Australia and at home, and for New Zealand. As well as the many provincial titles he won, he was in many winning teams at all levels, and once won the Masefield Aggregate at Nationals. Lindsay will be missed by his numerous friends and by the sport as a whole. He was a ‘Good Rifleman’!

Lindsay was farewelled at a small family funeral in Christchurch on March 22nd. Although it was not possible for fellow shooters to attend, his shooting achievements and commitment were well mentioned, and many messages of condolence were received. On March 26th-27th, many club members competed in the Nelson Championships held in Westport. Malvern’s Andre du Toit won the Target Rifle (TR) A Grade from a shoot off with Blenheim-Kaituna’s Malcolm Dodson. Daniel Alexander was third in the B Grade and Barry Brown won the C Grade. A great showing from these shooters as the competition was strong in all grades. On April 2nd club members held a working bee on the range. The

main task was extending the right end of the backstop to meet range safety requirements. The 300 and 500 yard mounds had their respective right ends built up with more soil. The shooting was scheduled for the afternoon, but this was cancelled to allow work to continue on the backstop. Thanks to everyone who gave their time and talents. This weekend is the Canterbury Autumn Championship hosted by the Ashburton District Rifle Club at their Ashburton Range. The Malvern Range will be closed as club members will be competing in Ashburton. STOCK EXCLUSION FROM RIVERS REQUIRED AS SOON AS 2023 By Anna Bensemann, Senior Planner, Baseline Group Marlborough. Regulations imposed under the RMA (Resource Management Act) in 2020 will see farmers having to exclude stock from rivers with a bed of one metre or more at any point within a property by either July 2023 or July 2025, depending on the type of stock. The Stock Exclusion Regulations 2020 were designed to control how and when stock had access to waterways to prevent damage to river and lake banks and the margins of wetlands and to avoid defecation into the water by stock contributing to overall poor water quality. Not all stock are treated equally with a focus on dairy cattle and dairy support cattle, intensively grazed beef cattle and deer and pigs generally to be excluded from wide rivers by July 2023. Beef cattle and deer on low slope land, which is not

intensively grazed, are required to be excluded from waterways by July 1st, 2025, giving more time to farms with lower stocking rates longer to achieve compliance with the Regulations. An exclusion means stock are kept three metres back from the top of the bank of a river, or edge of a lake unless they are crossing the waterbody. This is known as the three-metre rule. Stock may cross a waterway without the need for a bridge or culvert if the crossing is limited to twice in any month, and stock are supervised to cross directly. However, if you require your stock to cross rivers more often than twice monthly, then a bridge or culvert for a dedicated crossing is required. There are some exceptions, in relation to areas where the riverbed is highly mobile and therefore permanent crossings are not practical, but

requirements around ensuring stock move directly through riverbeds and are supervised during the crossings will still apply. Culverts and bridge installation is often managed by the District or Regional Authority through their district or regional planning framework. In some cases, in order to achieve compliance with the regulations, you may need to seek resource consent for earthworks close to a waterway, or for the installation of the bridge or culvert itself. It’s worth checking your local rules to ensure achieving compliance with the RMA regulation does not create an additional noncompliance with your local planning rules. The regulations were designed to give landowners time to install fences and to ensure wide rivers had dedicated stock crossings at critical points. The impact on some waterways will be clearly obvious because of these provisions with less sediment in waterways and improved stream health. For some landowners, fencing and stock exclusion will not be overly onerous, but for some larger dairy and cattle farms, the regulations impose signiﬁcant costs which will need to be factored into compliance budgets, and farm planning for the next 3–4 years in order to achieve compliance on time. Farmers must remember that their budgets and timeframes should include resource consenting costs so that the good work to fence a stream doesn’t result in a ﬁne for not complying with the local RMA rules.

SUCCESS FOR MALVERN BOWLERS Over the last two weekends, Bowls Canterbury held their annual Champion of Champions. This is a Championship where winners from individual Clubs enter their Champions from all Grades of their Championships This year Malvern and their respective Clubs are really proud of two of their players, both competing in the Year 1 and 2 Championship. Bronwyn Hamilton from the Darﬁeld Club competed against 16 other champions from Canterbury, North Canterbury and Mid Canterbury to win the Canterbury Champion of Champions in her Division. The game was very tight, with both players taking the lead at different times. With the score being 20 to 18 down to the Burnside player, Bronwyn came through and won the next end by 3, giving her the title. A very

exciting game to watch. Greg Hughes from the Kirwee Club also competed in the same Grade against 23 other players from Canterbury, North Canterbury and Mid Canterbury. Due to numbers, Greg not only had to compete the weekend before to qualify for Post Section but also on Saturday to qualify for the Final. This he did in great style winning the Post Section by

21 to 9. The Finals game played on Sunday was against a player from Woolston Park. After dropping a 2 on the ﬁrst end Greg never looked back to win 21 to 12. Malvern and their individual clubs are obviously very proud and excited to think their players have won such an achievement. Possibly the ﬁrst time in Malvern history this has ever happened.

CALF REARER ASSISTANT (July 20 - Sept 30) DARFIELD FARM The successful applicant will have some experience in rearing calves. Guaranteed hours of work are 7:30am - 3:30pm ﬁve days per week, $25+ per hour based on experience. Hours open to negotiation if you would like more/less.

FARM ASSISTANT (three month position) DARFIELD FARM The successful applicant doesn't need any experience with milking cows but must be able to drive a two-wheeler. This is a Drive In-Drive Out position and would be well suited to someone who seeks more experience in the industry. Must have a valid drivers license. Competitive rates.
