Local Year 9 Darfield High School student, Melanie Beatty was recently awarded the Coaches Choice Award for the Pioneers of Canterbury, Under 16s.

Melanie started marching when she was five years old after watching her mum (Amanda Amanda Beatty) Beatty compete. She has been marching for the Templeton based, Pioneers of Canterbury Marching Teams for the last eight years. This group caters for girls and boys teams from four years old to sixty plus. Marching can be for fun or competition, it is a sport that everyone can participate in. There are two sections that Marching Teams can participate in at all competitions in New Zealand, Technical Drill and Display March. Technical Drill routines are a performance of the traditional military-like style of marching of compulsory drills and set march plans. A technical drill team comprises of 7-10 marchers and combines a set Review and Inspection routine and a set March Plan of different types of drills and quantities of movements depending on the

age grade performing. Display March is a phase designed for teams to perform with 7-14 marchers. Display is a routine of rhythmic movements to enhance the performance and is performed to the team’s own choice of music. The Display should project the overall degree of excellence of the ‘picture being presented combined with the ‘look’ of the brilliance and versatility of the Team.

Melanie is currently in the Under 16 grade, where she has marched for the last three seasons. Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, the Team has missed out on many competitions this season, most importantly the New Zealand Marching Championships which were supposed to be held in Hamilton last weekend. Due to the cancellation of the nationals, Melanie is now enjoying a small break before training for the 2022/23 season, which kicks off in June.

HOPING TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS Local shooting enthusiast, Heath Smith, Smith has a real passion for Clay Target Shooting. His interest in the sport started when he helped out in the trap house, when he was about 13 years old in Kaikoura, allowing him to have a few goes at the end of the day's shoot. Fast forward some years to 2011, he won the Ross Shield at Darfield Gun Club, shooting a possible score of 50/50, and he has had the bug ever since. He now shoots at the highest level in both Provincial and National competitions.

In 2018, Heath made the New Zealand Open Team, shooting 100/100 towards the team score.

He then took a break for a year as life was a bit busy with work commitments (hunting tour guide), etc. 2020, saw the arrival of the Covid pandemic, meaning the borders closed, allowing him more time to focus on Clay Target Shooting again.

Recently, Heath won three North Island titles in the Skeet, Ball Trap and Triples events. His passion for the sport doesn't finish with competing. Heath’s son, Josh (12), attended his first competition last Sunday, “He really enjoyed it and shot well, I really like sharing this sport with my son and found it was a great father, son activity,” Heath commented proudly.

Clay Target Shooting is a great sport for the whole family (10-12 years old is a great time to start) whether you are wanting to compete or just enjoy the sport.

People wanting to try Clay Target Shooting can attend ‘have -a-go’ days or touch base with a local club. Under the guidance of a licensed Gun Club member you will be supplied equipment to start with (just wear smart, casual clothing and closed in footwear). Gun safety is paramount! A full safety briefing will always be given to any new individuals before any shooting is undertaken.

There is a grade for everyone, AA, A, B, C, including Juniors, Veterans and Ladies. “The Ladies' division was created to encourage women’s participation in the sport, and it would be nice to see more ladies giving it a go,” Heath added. This sport creates a great father-son or mother-daughter opportunity.

Some of the disciplines available are: • Skeet: a shooting sport in which a clay target is thrown from a trap to simulate the flight of a bird. With Skeet, the shooter is presented with targets from both a high and low trap house.

• Down-the-line (DTL) or Trap Shooting: is derived from the shooting of live birds originally hand thrown. In the most simple of the modern event, targets are thrown 48 metres across varying angles from a single trap above ground level 15 metres forward from the shooter. The targets are normally shot between 30 and 40 metres from the gun.

Ball Trap: uses a single oscillating trap in a trap house, which is below ground level that throws a target approximately 75 metres with a varying elevation of 1 to 4 metres above ground level.

• Sporting: traps are set out in various positions and simulate game bird shooting as if live in the field, these are set targets that come towards you, along the ground and cross over pairs.

Junior Shooting and School Team Shooting is also very popular throughout New Zealand. There can be anywhere between 300400 competitors at the School Trap Nationals every year, and competitors compete as individuals and for their School Teams. Local Farmer Warren Wright, Wright Chairman of the School Shooting Association, has been involved in and coached in the Junior Shooting Programme for many years and would be a great person to talk to if you would like any further information regarding this: 021 343 700.

BIRDS EYE VIEW Birds Eye View brings a range of style, colour and imagery to Te Huanui this month. From mixed media birdlife to landscapes in oils from Tricia Hewlett, Hewlett Elizabeth Rosa, Rosa Sarah Beal and Viv Wotton there is something for everyone. Birds Eye View opens Friday, March 25th and runs until Thursday, April 28th.

Due to the current Red Light Setting, no official opening will be held. ♦ Tricia Hewlett lives and works on Hinewai Reserve, a 1,500 hectare nature reserve on the doorstep of Akaroa. Her inspiration comes from the thriving wildlife at her door and throughout Aotearoa.

Tricia's work is predominantly in graphite, with a move towards mixed media for this exhibition. Community taught, her knowledge comes from a variety of artists and many hours of practice. ♦ Viv Wotton made a career changing decision in 2012 to pursue her artistic passion, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2016. Viv doesn't limit herself to any particular medium but finds herself coming back to painting, drawing and printmaking as her favourite creative outlets.

Her inspiration comes from landscapes, particularly memory evoking scenes and from birdlife, she photographs. ♦ Elizabeth Rosa is a self-taught Christchurch based artist with a passion for the New Zealand environment and the creatures that inhabit it. Elizabeth works in acrylics, oils and vivid colours to create regal-like portraits of native birdlife, full of attitude and personality. ♦ Sarah Beal is a self-taught painter, working almost exclusively in oils, having taken up painting fifteen years ago. Sarah loves to paint abstract landscapes, enjoying the freedom and happiness her imagined scenes bring.

Having her work described as deconstructed landscapes, is an apt description, as there is a clear element of nature in her works.

WALK FOR PEACE It was my privilege to be offered the opportunity to walk part of the way with Temel Atacocugu on his walk for peace on March 15th.

Temel was shot nine times during the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks. Exactly three years to the hour, Temel returned to the same spot at the Al Noor mosque marking the end of a gruelling 360km walk from Dunedin. His walk traced the route of the attacker from Dunedin to Christchurch, with the aim of reclaiming the gunman’s route in the name of peace.

The final leg of the walk started in Rolleston, where I linked up with Temel and his support team at 7am to start the 25km route via Templeton, Hornby and Riccarton to Deans Ave. Over the six hours of walking, I had plenty of time to talk with Temel and understand a little more about his motivations. He was keen to use his experience to influence good in New Zealand. I appreciated the narrative about his walk at a time when much of the news in the media is tough and sad. The

more we spoke the more I admired him as a hero for positive change, not looking for personal glory but willing to go through personal pain to seek healing for our community.

I have the utmost admiration for Temel. Over the course of fifteen days, he endured personal pain and sickness, which included two nights in hospital. Not only has his walk raised $75,000 for his

charities, he reminded us all that it is peace, forgiveness and love that binds us together in the face of atrocities.

TOILETRY ITEMS NEEDED Rosalie Craven from Darfield Food and Clothing Bank received a wonderful donation of four banana boxes of new children’s little bags. Rosalie thought a great initiative to use them would be making up toilet bags for children in need. She put the word out on the Darfield Food and Clothing Bank Facebook page and has had an amazingly positive response from the local community. Numerous people have responded with fundraising ideas and were willing to do their own investigation on this. Donations of toiletries have started to come in, as well as financial donations.

“These bags are going to be donated to children in the local community, as well as within the Canterbury region in places like the Women’s Refuge. Each bag will have a small face cloth, brush or comb, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste and soap or body wash,” Rosalie commented.

“I am thinking of also starting up a ‘bags for babies’, but I am still working out what a baby's bag would need to have in it to be useful for families in crisis. I’m excited about this venture, and I am so grateful for the positive community response so far,” Rosalie concluded.

SELWYN CLINICS AND COLLECTION Canterbury District Health Board is making some changes to vaccination clinics in Selwyn.

The clinic at Rolleston Community Centre will be closed this Saturday, March 26th 2022. But there will be a vaccination clinic at Lincoln Event Centre this weekend, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March, between 12.30-5.30pm.

No bookings required.

The DHB has also added two new rapid antigen test (RAT) collection sites in Selwyn at Darfield Pharmacy (see information on the front page of this issue for instructions) and Leeston Pharmacy.

You need to order RATs before heading to any of these pharmacies.

Please wear a mask when attending the pharmacy and advise staff if you are symptomatic.

Orders can be made via the online system at requestrats.covid19.health.nz or by free calling 0800 222 478.

Kate Warren Associate It is easy to fall into the trap of negative media commentary where it is all rather doom and gloom. Putting these headlines into perspective is important as what happens in Auckland doesn't necessarily corollate to what is happening on a local level.

Yes, things are tightening, petrol prices are getting out of control, prices at the grocery store are going up and families are feeling the pinch. Unemployment is still low and Canterbury remains a popular destination.

So, what is happening at a local level? I spoke last month about the REINZ stats that give the most accurate feel for what is happening in the local market and not just a national grabbing

headline.

In February Selwyn recorded the highest median house price ever!

Put into perspective in February last year the median price was $655,000. February 2022, based on the sales that took place in February was a whopping $890,000, this was also an increase in median price from January 2022. But, sale volumes were well down, year on year (February) 26%.

Days on the market were sitting at 33 days compared to the 10 year average of 39 days.

The Government has announced that the Credit Controls that were put in place in December have had some unintended consequences for mortgage borrowers and they will look at

unwinding these. Banks will likely loosen their purse strings and lend more money for housing.

So where does this take us? In summary, prices are holding up, sales volumes remain low (but stock levels will rise as confidence returns), and the time taken to sell is still lower than average. Take confidence that our ‘local’ market remains relatively strong. First home buyers and those affected by the Credit Controls put in place will return, albeit, cautiously to the market while they relearn the market they have not been active in for the last few months.

Former MP Amy Adams has been appointed the new chancellor of the University of Canterbury (UC).

Amy is a former UC student, having graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours.

Her legal career included becoming a partner at the Christchurch law firm Mortlock McCormack, and in November 2008 she was elected as MP for Selwyn. Amy commented, “it was a privilege to serve the Canterbury community.”

“I feel humbled to be appointed to a role where I can use my experience to support students and staff in strengthening our place as a globally recognised, comprehensive, researchintensive university, delivering world-class education,” Amy concluded.

Amy replaces Sue McCormack who had held the role since 2019. As chancellor, Amy will sit on UC’s council and committees.

Vice-chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey said, “she was delighted to see the role filled by someone who is obviously committed to the local community.”

“I look forward to working alongside Amy as we guide the University in fulfilling its strategic vision, especially as we rapidly approach the 150th

anniversary celebrations of the University of Canterbury in 2023,” Cheryl concluded.

Professor Te Maire Tau, Tau Pou Whakarae of the Ngāi Tahu Centre at the University of Canterbury, congratulated Adams on her new appointment.

“We hope she will strengthen our efforts as we continue to work together to advance academic excellence for all our students,” commented Te Maire Tau. Amy held several positions during her time in parliament, including Canterbury Earthquake Recovery associate minister for almost three years.

She hit the headlines in May 2020 when then-National leader Todd Muller named her number three in the party rankings and gave her the Covid-19 recovery shadow portfolio role.

She retired from politics in October 2020.

Shayne Te Aika has been named UC’s new pro-chancellor,

in a term that begins immediately.

“I will continue to express the desires of iwi and hapū, as well as my own ideas, toward guiding Te Kaunihera o Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury) to make sound decisions toward the learning and educational pursuits of Māori students, while embracing the ambitions of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu,” Shayne said.

SHAVE FOR A CURE

Elliana (Ellie) Stuart did her Shave for a Cure shave at school (Villa Maria) during the last period on Friday, March 18th, with the Year 7 and 8 students watching. Elliana’s friends chopped off a ponytail each (to be sent to Freedom Wigs) then Rosie (Year 11) shaved Elliana’s head. Then, Rosie, had hers shaved by her friend.

Another Year 11 Villa Maria student also shaved her head.

Elliana went and watched while her Aunty Sophie had her head shaved on Friday night. Ellie chopped off one of Sophie's ponytails then Sophie's sister shaved her head.

Ellie loves the feel of her new hairdo. She loves touching it and loves that it dries fast and is way lighter. However, she is still getting used to it.

At last tally, Ellie had raised approximately $2,200, and her Aunty Sophie had raised $1,980.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Christchurch are seeking volunteer mentors to support young people in Christchurch.

Many of the children needing a mentor have no one to look up to or no one who will focus all their attention on them, so BBBS gives them one caring supportive adult to help create many new positive childhood memories.

Mentors meet with their young person once a week for at least one year. They do simple and fun activities together, building a friendship.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Christchurch is a charity committed to the healthy development of young people.

They recognise the challenges faced in life and believe that one of the best things society can offer its young people is a stable and caring relationship with an adult: one who listens, who is committed and is able to have some fun. Since 2004 they have achieved this by recruiting volunteers from the community.

Many readers will remember exlocal Michelle Kittelty, Kittelty she is currently involved with the programme. Michelle is a Big Sister to Mia, Mia and this pair are one of 138 matches currently supervised in Christchurch.

These matches range in length, from those that have just started their journey to those now celebrating their ninth year together. The programme also operates in thirteen other locations throughout the

country.

Michelle commented, “My application to volunteer as a mentor with BBBS began early last year, and I was lucky enough to be matched with Mia last month. So the programme is very new to me, and I've got lots to learn! The organisation has excellent processes in place, awesome people, and great support along the way. I am looking forward to building a happy and healthy relationship with Mia, and having some fun and adventures as we go.’

The programme operates completely on the generosity of individuals, local businesses and

community grants. BBBS need volunteers who either live or work in the Christchurch City limits to be mentors. Besides becoming a mentor there are other ways to get involved and show your support of this fantastic programme, like taking part in our fundraisers or making a regular or one-off donation.

Sadly, and only after much discussion, the Malvern A&P Association have had to make the unprecedented (other than for war) decision to cancel the community’s much loved Malvern A&P Show, which was to have been held on March 28th, 2020, at Sheffield.

For those volunteers that have expended countless hours; planning, organising and arranging this event, its cancellation is devastating.

However if this absolutely ghastly and life-threatening pandemic is to be controlled, we all know this was the right decision for the committee to come to.

DARFIELD SENIOR TOUCH On Wednesday, March 16th the Finals of the Darfield Senior Touch competition were held at Darfield Domain. With current Covid protocols in place, the prize giving had to be scaled back this year, but the round winners and overall winners were awarded their prizes.

The Mixed 1 Final against the Selwyn Stingrays and Sheffield Sharks was a closely fought game, resulting in ten

touchdowns to eight. The Selwyn Stingrays have shown consistent form, winning this grade for the last three years.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for working with us to achieve playing the most we possibly could of the season. We are looking forward to the winter break before getting back into Touch later in the year,” commented the Touch Committee.

The South Island Outdoor Target Shooting Championship was held over the weekend of March 19th and 20th, where two Darfield High School students, Piper Benbow and Ryan Booth, Booth were competing. The competition was held at the outdoor 50m Burnett Range at McLeans Island and was the last competition for the 2021-2022 outdoor season.

Piper was first up on Saturday, shooting in the 3 Position Championship, but had an equipment failure, causing a drop in her scores, but she still managed to place second in the Women's division.

The rest of Saturday's shooting was for the Sweepstake competition, (a warm-up to the Championship on Sunday). Ryan shot in breezy conditions after lunch, struggling to keep the 9's

away, ultimately placing fourth in the C Grade. There were only 10 points between first and fifth, showing how close the competition was.

Sunday presented better conditions, with only a light breeze. Piper was shooting prone position and smashed out a new

Personal Best shooting an impressive 589 (616.7 decimal score), taking out the B Grade and third-highest score overall!

Ryan won the C Grade with a 574 (605.8 decimal score). These were great results to finish off the season.
