The News approached the new Darfield High School (DHS) Head students for a few comments about what they are looking forward to in their new roles. Hailey Barker: I'm super excited to be one of the Head Students for 2022 at Darfield High School! I’ve been attending this school since I was just turning into a teenager! I'm really looking forward to working alongside the student leadership team in order to make this year full of fun, and bring in some new ideas since we’ve grown into young adults together. I can't wait to make lots of great memories throughout this year with everyone! Dwight Felipe: I am very honoured and proud to have been selected as one of four Head Students at Darfield High School for 2022. I’m super excited about taking on this role and working alongside an amazing team of student leaders. I’m most looking forward to being a positive role model for

the younger peers at DHS, and also making as many positive memories with my fellow students, creating fun fulfilling activities. My goals this year are, that I hope to inspire as many people as I can to take every opportunity they come across and encourage students to strive high, whether it’s academically, culturally or in sports. Annabelle Serra: I’m one of your Head Students for this year. I’ve been attending Darfield High School since I was in Year 7, so it’s pretty cool to be one of the student leaders. I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone and working alongside the rest of this amazing team, to help make sure we all enjoy 2022. Vaughn Smart: To have been awarded one of the four Head Students roles at Darfield High School in 2022 is an immense privilege. I look forward to working with our amazing team of student leaders to leave our mark on the school. I am especially excited to work

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel this years’ Malvern A&P Show due to the Traffic Light Covid settings. This is a great disappointment to all the hardworking committee. The Show was well underway with sections set up and schedule printed, which is a credit to their continued diligence. We will still be running the Gift Lamb Competition, due to the late notice of cancelling we have incurred costs and ongoing overheads, the necessity of hosting an event of this size. We greatly appreciate the long term support of our local farmers and growers, without whom such an event would struggle to be held. We will also hold a barbecue with refreshments after judging at the sale yards. and throws our ability to run certain school events into turmoil, it is exciting to be involved at a time when the school is evolving, with many changes taking place, such as the implementation of a new vision and new values.

RE ALIGN EXHIBITION Re Align, Te Huanui’s March exhibition, highlights control, chaos, timing and dichotomy within. Featuring works from Helen Willcock, Willcock Jonathan Chaston and Anna.key the exhibition has a wide range of colour, texture and form. Re Align opens Friday, February 25th and will run until Thursday, March 24th. Due to the current Red Light setting, no exhibition opening will be held. Anna.key is a mixed media artist based in Canterbury. She started creating art due to anxiety issues and discovered this helped with that immensely. She began studying at Ara, Timaru in 2010, to further her interests to see where it would take her. She discovered the world of sculpture and the wide variety of materials that could be used together, to create some often controversial and thoughtprovoking pieces. Anna.key's style of art has always portrayed a lot of raw emotion through materials matching the feel of past experiences - edgy, textural, shiny and sharp. With an aftertaste of the melancholic, her pieces often give the viewer the feeling of needing to explore and touch. This collection has been inspired by the perfect machine, otherwise known as

the human body and the dichotomy within. The fusion of passion, disease, love, mental illness and happiness, and our ability to suffer yet still function. Helen Willcock is a mostly self-taught artist. She has enjoyed art and sculpture for more than forty years, attending many courses over this time. Helen’s acrylic paintings explore tension between pattern, order and disorder. Her taped paintings are about clean lines and precision, while she enjoys the imperfections allowing a human touch. Her abstract paintings are a moderation of control to apparent chaos, there is always intent present. Helen’s early inﬂuences were from OP (optical) art, with input from a crosssection of artists in her network always appreciated.

Jonathan Chaston’s art career began while at Cashmere High School, with one of his paintings being sent to Japan. Tutoring from Barry Cleavin at Christchurch Polytechnic led to acceptance at Ilam Art School, which due to circumstances didn’t eventuate. Jonathan believes there is a time and place for most things in life. The works that he is now creating are based on techniques learned throughout his working years. A business restoring brass led to restoring vintage cars, an art in itself. Jonathan’s sculptures are made of different metals such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper, bronze, brass and steel. MILESTONE FOR LOCAL POOL It is twenty years since Darfield pool was reopened by the Rt. Hon Jenny Shipley MP (at that time) and the Mayor, Mr Michael McEvedy, McEvedy after an extensive upgrade. This included the addition of changing rooms, toilets, showers and disabled access, the covering of the learner’s pool and the addition of filtration systems for all three pools. The committee that ran and looked after the pool in the late 1990s had a belief and vision that the pool was an important asset to the community. They undertook planning and fundraising of approximately $350,000 which was spent to improve the facility. This was in a long tradition of community involvement with the Darfield pool since it began over ninety years ago in the 1920s as

a shingle pit with a water race diverted through it. This included efforts in the 1980s that saw fundraising for the learner’s pool to be built. In the 1990s the main pool was also developed. The upgrades in 2002 were hugely valuable additions to this community asset. The covering of the learner’s pool has ensured lessons could be held regardless of the weather, ensuring lessons are more enjoyable and successful for children learning to swim over the last twenty years. Ongoing improvements from the Council over the past twenty years have seen the pools heated and further upgrades coming. Today’s pool is well used by the community, schools around the district, scouts, ﬁre brigade, swim club, lessons and aqua ﬁt.

It is a social hub for parents, children, and teenagers during the summer and a space where young ones can learn to be water safe. Congratulations to the people and committee who had the foresight, vision and belief in the pool, so it could grow into what it is today. James Richmond, Council Active Selwyn Manager.

The January sales data has just come through, hot off the press from the Real Estate Institute New Zealand (REINZ), this information includes property values and sale numbers. REINZ collect sales data from real estate agencies in real-time, and can therefore give the most accurate feel for the data. Nationally, the number of house sales by volume fell by 48 percent from December. Comparing January 2021 to January 2022, the ﬁgure was a 28.6 percent drop. Why the drop? Several factors came into play including, listing numbers being lower, eg: fewer available properties. The fear of missing out (FOMO) effect on buyers has diminished due

to building consent numbers increasing, and probably the most inﬂuential factor is the tightening of lending rules. The banks are being overly cautious due to the introduction of the legislation against irresponsible lending practices. Banks have always been cautious, but the unintended consequences of making it harder for Loan Sharks is that the banks have been lumped in with them. Banks are in the business of lending money and don't want to stop lending because someone has a Netﬂix account, gym membership or drinks a few too many Latte's. They will learn to cope with these changes, while pushing the central Government

to undo the unintended consequence of this new legislation. If you are thinking of buying but don't know where to start, our suggestion is to sit with a mortgage broker (free to the borrower) and get packaged up, for them to make a case to the bank on your behalf. Now, this may seem gloomy, but there is positive news. The median sale price for the whole Selwyn area is up from December 2021, from a median of $835,000 to $850,000. UPDATED AGREEMENT FOR SALE AND PURCHASE The property market is a challenging space, most recently with new lending criteria making headlines. In the background, the standard Agreement for Sale and Purchase used by almost everyone has been updated, including some quite material changes. Under the old form of the Agreement, the usual rule was ‘settle now, sue later’ which put a lot of risk on the purchasers at settlement time, and the process

to be followed (if a purchaser believed they had a claim for compensation) was not straightforward. Under the updated Agreement, changes to the compensation provisions mean it still usually is a case of ‘settle now, sue later’, but the rules about how and when a claim can be made and how a claim is progressed are set out, giving more clarity and certainty as to process. It also speciﬁes that the Purchaser must

The Malvern Community Board is again hosting monthly drop-in sessions in communities around Malvern. This month the Board visited the Springfield and Annat communities to listen to comments and discussion on a wide range of topics and issues related to these townships and the wider area. Council staff were present to give the technical answers or to take the questions away for further investigation. One of the main topics identified was the Springfield water treatment system, which has problems coping with heavy rain causing the water intake to be closed. The Council has scheduled the installation of a 500m3 reservoir by June this year. This will give two days’ supply to the township water supply. Another reservoir could be installed if needed. It was noted by those present that it took seven days to deliver a drinking water tanker to Springfield after the last flood event and ‘boil water’ notice. Council representatives gave an undertaking that delivery would be within 24 hours if this was needed again. Methods of filtration and alternative water supplies were also discussed at the meeting. The surface water from rain in and around Springfield in May 2021 was said to be a 100-200 year event, but these are appearing more frequently. Council has commissioned a hydrological report that includes a survey of all floor levels of houses in Springfield and a report on options to mitigate further floods. Those present noted the build-up of shingle in water races and culverts around the village as a factor in floods. The staff took note of various other issues that were mentioned including water supply for future subdivision in the township, ponding of water from the public toilet effluent system and the flashing street speed signs not working. The condition of some road surfaces, the need for marking of stone soak-holes on the roadside and the need to clean Bishops Creek were also mentioned. The Council will reassess the maintenance of water races in the village and the removal of spoil. Landowners were asked to ensure that water race cleaners can access the water race through their sections. Another community meeting will be held by the Community Board in April, to give an update on the various projects in and around Springfield and Annat. The next drop-in session is at Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass. Any member of the Malvern community is welcome to attend to discuss issues and ask questions.

The Locals Club in Waddington and Sheffield, aims to bring fun and community spirit back into the two townships by organising a range of events and activities throughout the year. Recently, the Club organised two women's health evenings Navigating Menopause with Flourish Doctors and Gentle Calming Yoga, at the Sheffield Community Hall.

New bus shelters for Sheffield and Waddington Last Saturday, saw the building of two long-awaited school bus shelters. A group of volunteers led by builder James Hunt, Hunt from James Hunt Residential, built and installed the first shelter in Waddington just before the southerly hit. Weather permitting, the group will erect the Sheffield bus shelter this weekend. Locals Club member AnnAnn- Maree Ozanne said, “A huge thank you to James for his energy, help and patience with his volunteer apprentices on the day. COMMUNITY RESPONSE TEAM The Hororata CRT (Community Response Team) are working with the community and Council to protect the Hororata area from floods. The CRT has focused on three key steps which will help manage flooding events. The first being highlighting problem areas with the Council, which has resulted in culverts being cleared. Some increased in size and drainage was created between the Hororata Village and Hororata River, which will

help reduce flood damage in the future. Secondly, they continue to raise issues with the Council relating to flood water arriving in the township, off Hororata Coalgate Road (culvert size to increase) and overflow of Happy Jacks Creek on Plantation Road. Thirdly, the CRT are monitoring and encouraging authorities to look after the lifeline road to Christchurch. Flood damaged abutments on Bealey Road at both the Selwyn and

Another Defibrillator Planned for Darfield. Selwyn St John and its Chair, Ann Shepherd, have asked the Malvern Community Arts Council to support their community service project for 2022. Local artist, Sarah Deans, has donated one of her paintings, ‘Intuitiveness’ (pictured above) to support the purchase and installation of an Automated External Defibrillator by St John, in central Darfield. During the month of March, the painting will be on exhibit at Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield (who have waived a commission on the sale), so that the full purchase price can be used to enable access to a defibrillator for all who may require it within the township, in case of a cardiac emergency. The oil canvas measures 900 x 1200mm and has been valued at $5,000 by Donald Goulter, of Merivale Fine Art. Selwyn St John hopes that its sale will contribute to the success of this Defibrillator project. Te Huanui is open Tues–Thurs, 11am–2pm, and Fri–Sun, 10am–4pm.

Along with these preventive measures, the CRT are also working to prepare for future floods by purchasing and storing sand for sandbags, so that these can be readily available in a flooding emergency. “As a rural community, we know the importance of being able to work together to protect properties and people in emergencies. We want to be proactive and having sand stored locally along with bags is a big step towards this. There's plenty of volunteer time and energy during floods, but flood/sand preparation is costing $1,400 by way of bunker blocks, sand and transport, the community needs to fund this,” said CRT member Dave Askin. Askin “With the help of the Hororata Community Trust and valued donations from local businesses, we have set up a raffle to help raise this $1,400. People can buy tickets from Hororata Garage, Café and Sovereign Salmon. A book of ten tickets cost $20. “We encourage people to join Selwyn Gets Ready where ever they are in the district. People may not know but this system originated in Hororata, so it is truly homegrown,” Dave concluded.

A community meeting was hosted by the Malvern Community Board on Tuesday, February 15th, to discuss the future of the old St John building, in Darﬁeld. This building was the former Malvern County Council office, built in 1912, and was purchased by the St John Malvern SubCentre in 1969. The building is owned by St John, but the land is owned by the Department of Conservation. St John are happy to transfer ownership of the building to a group or non-proﬁt organisation, who wish to restore it. If a purchaser is not found then

the building will be demolished and the land will be returned to the Department of Conservation, who wish to take it back as bare land. The possible retention of the building for public use was discussed at the meeting. It was noted that Selwyn District

Council does not wish to purchase and restore the building for public use, but it is possible for a community group to do this if funding could be found. However, no community representative at the meeting indicated that their organisation wished to do this.

CANINE PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK Parvovirus has long been recognised in New Zealand. This current outbreak is in fact the worst we’ve seen for some time. It is normally seen around summertime, when puppies are abundant and potentially not adequately vaccinated. Parvovirus infection carries a high mortality rate, especially amongst young puppies and immunosuppressed dogs. The incubation period is around 7 to 10 days. Clinical signs commonly start with the puppy being quieter, lethargic, inappetent (lacking appetite) and then progressing quickly to include vomiting and diarrhoea. The diarrhoea is often bloody and extremely smelly. Once the signs develop, patients deteriorate very rapidly and the disease itself is very difficult and expensive to treat. Most patients require hospitalisation for intravenous ﬂuids and intensive care.

Parvovirus can be spread in dog’s faeces, urine, saliva and vomit. It is a very hardy virus and can survive in the environment for many years. The risk has always been there where dogs frequently visit, such as at dog parks and boarding facilities, but the risk is even higher during an outbreak. The most important preventative strategy we have against Parvovirus is vaccination. The vaccines available in New Zealand are extremely effective, provided the course is complete and up to date. So, please check with your vet to see if your dog is up to date with his or her vaccinations. Puppies typically need 3 to 4 vaccination (between 6 to 16 weeks of age) and then a booster at 18 months to get full immunity. Talk to your vet and get the most up to date advice. Another important thing to remember, is not to take your

puppies for walks in public places until they are fully immunised (at least 10 - 14 days after their last puppy vaccination). This is even more important with a Parvovirus outbreak. It is prudent that puppies get socialised for their development. Puppy preschools provide a safe way to socialise puppies, as they should all require puppies have had at least 1-2 vaccinations. You can also have your puppy in a trolley or stroller when you go on walks, so he or she can socialise with other people without the risk of picking up Parvovirus. LOCAL AMBASSADOR Darﬁeld High School student, Emma Cunningham has recently been selected as a Forward Foundation Ambassador for 2022. The Forward Foundation is a NZ registered charity. Founded in 2012, the charity's mission is to empower girls through sport and active recreation, helping to create contributing community members who are conﬁdent, resilient and independent. They do this by making sport and active recreation a positive experience for all girls, increasing the number of girls participating in sport and allowing them to use the experience to develop life skills in their own time and unique way. The Ambassador Programme is made up of girls from all around New Zealand and aims to increase participation in girls sports by identifying aspirational young female leaders and enabling them to inspire those around them to participate in

sport. They are not looking for the best player in the team, they are looking for girls willing and passionate about kicking goals and helping grow girls’ sport in New Zealand. It was fourth and final time lucky for Tasman FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Jonny Brown, Brown who took out the title on Saturday, February 19th. The thirty one year old dairy farm manager and Dunsandel Young Farmer has been named as the second FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final qualifier for season 54. Deer and dairy farmer Andrew Allan (21), came runner up, meanwhile, Lincoln University student Archie Woodhouse (20), came in third. Jonny manages a dairy farm for Dairy Holdings Ltd, which milks 1,300 cows, and he said he was struggling to comprehend the win. “Each year my preparation hasn't been great, so I need to rectify that for the Grand Final,” he laughed. The father of two has struggled in previous years with the head to heads, naming that aspect of the contest his biggest challenge. “I'm not creative at all, so I have to figure it out. Luckily the young pups didn't know my weakness, so I managed to pick up a few good points by finishing first with a pretty horrible chair and putting some pressure on the others. Extremely passionate about the dairy industry, Jonny has spent his career working through the ranks of dairying, contract milking and farm management mainly around Canterbury since graduating from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce and Land Valuation. Looking ahead to the

Grand Final in Whangarei in July, Jonny will be utilising his friends to test him on all aspects of the primary industries. “There's a lot of hard work ahead, I'm going to have to polish up on a lot of things. Once you've got a taste of being near the top you've got to climb that mountain. The contest is based on four pillars, agri-skills, agri-business, agri-sports and agri-knowledge. New Zealand Young Farmers Chief Executive Lynda Coppersmith said the stakes for 2022 were incredibly high, being the third contest season impacted by the global pandemic. “Entries for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year were up 30 percent this year despite the uncertainty of Covid, which is a credit to all our amazing volunteers, members, sponsors and staff who put this contest together,” Lynda added. "My gratitude for everyone's efforts extends beyond words, and I am proud to see how everyone has worked together to deliver another season, to pivot and adapt to new challenges, including the red light framework. MALVERN RIFLE CLUB A warm day with light winds greeted shooters on Saturday, February 19th, for the ﬁfth round of the Club Championship and the third round of the ‘Shorts’ (10 counting shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards). The wind was blowing from the targets towards the shooters for a time at 300 yards. While light it wasn’t steady, changing angle and pressure. By the time shooters arrived at the 600 yard mound the southerly wind had arrived, reversing the direction and increasing in strength and variability. The ﬁnal few shooters had to shoot in light rain with decreasing visibility. The ‘A’ Grade shooters showed their class, with great scores

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET A visiting Cheviot team were much too good for Darfield as they bundled out the hosts for 145 in 38 overs, on Saturday, and then chased down the score in an incredible 16 overs just minutes before the rain came. Batting first, Darfield started well as Nick Jenkins (25) and Nick Gilbert (54) took the team score to 42, but the wobble started thereafter and never steadied as no other batter made it into the 20's. Gilbert seems to have returned to form and will hope to do well for the remainder of

the season to cement the opening spot for the knock out stage. Will Smith and Will Anderson picked up 3 wickets each, and Darﬁeld left 7 unused overs wasted at the end. Whatever was in the sausage rolls at the innings break must have had a performance enhancing effect on Jack Harris as he smashed his way to 81 from only 42 balls. Harris hit 10 fours and 5 sixes, and was ably assisted by the competition’s leading run scorer Ryan Ellis who, no slug himself, made 38

MALVERN JUNIOR PAIRS The Malvern Junior Pairs Bowling Competition (for players of up to ﬁve years’ experience) was held at Kirwee Bowling Club on Sunday, February 20th. Any combination of men and women were allowed, and the format was what is known as 2-4-2, where both players share the roles of lead and skip. For the ﬁrst time in eleven years, a Kirwee team consisting of Greg Hughes and Alan Jacks won the Competition. In second place was the Oxford team, including Barbara Thompson and Gary Stubbs, Stubbs while Tracy Fickling and Glen DeLorenzo from Coalgate came third.

WEST COAST BOWLS With so many events being cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, many Canterbury bowlers were wondering if the annual West Coast Open Fours Tournament would go ahead. It was early in February before the West Coast Bowls Centre made the anxiously awaited decision, the Tournament would go ahead, with appropriate precautions in place against Omicron. From Kirwee one team attended the Men’s event, from February 11th to 13th, reviving a long dormant tradition at Kirwee. While two teams entered the Women’s event, run from February 15th to 17th. It should be noted that Kirwee Ladies

have consistently been part of this competition for over twenty ﬁve years! The Kirwee Men, Alan Jacks, Jacks Greg Hughes, Hughes David Stott and Ken May, May had to miss the last day of play when the Coast was assailed by heavy rain, but luckily the Women were met with glorious weather for the entire event, much to their delight. All the participants were appreciative of the efforts made by the West Coast clubs to make sure the Tournament could take place, especially after several teams had pulled out for various reasons. Mabel Knight’s Knight team, consisting of Val Watson, Watson Maureen

Robertson and Marian Galloway, Galloway achieved four wins in the qualifying rounds to reach the ‘Main Event’ on Finals Day. They then won two more games, taking them to the semi-Finals where they were beaten by a strong team from the Nelson area. The team finished third equal out of the whole field, and the Nelson team went on to win the Jubilee Trophy without any losses at all! Rosie Croft, Croft with Wendy Clucas, Clucas Anne May and Rhonda Lynton in her team, enjoyed a series of close games, losing several by only one point and making it into the first consolation section.
