SELWYN MP UPDATE Businesses across Selwyn and Canterbury have put up a Herculean ﬁght since 2020 to stay aﬂoat, but after two years, many simply cannot sustain it anymore. I am deeply saddened to hear yet another popular show has been cancelled, because organisers simply cannot operate under the restrictions they have been set. It seems so unfair that, through no fault of their own, they cannot bring crowds together like we have all enjoyed doing our entire lives. While the Government’s response

to the pandemic was appropriate in 2020, restrictions have gone on too long and it now needs to start charting a pathway back to something closer to normal life. Kiwis have sacriﬁced a lot over the last two years. We have complied with each new public health restriction and each new impingement on the freedoms and rights that, in normal times, would have been considered unconscionable. New Zealanders deserve to know what the triggers will be, in terms of case numbers, booster coverage, or falling

hospitalisation rates, for a move from Red to Orange to Green under the Traffic Light System. We also need to know when gathering limits and restrictions will end, when the vaccine pass system will no longer be required, and at what point vaccine mandates will be allowed to expire. This is something that I regularly advocate for on behalf of residents across Selwyn, and I will continue to do so for as long as necessary. Nicola Grigg, Selwyn MP.

How good are the winter Olympics! I’ve loved watching the curling and snowboard cross, the downhill and biathlon, speed skating and our ﬁrst winter Olympic gold medal. With a load of snow on the mountains over the weekend, it was feeling more winter than summer in Selwyn. Such a wet February leaves many in our rural community feeling the squeeze on the window of harvest. Signiﬁcant rain continues to fall each week making it difficult for the collection of seed and crops. Hopefully, a few longer dry periods are just around the corner to reward the months of hard work and preparation. I’m conscious that due to Omicron many families, workers and businesses across our community are feeling the pinch as our economy slows and new precautions add complexity to work, school and home life. As case numbers rise we need to continue to look out for and connect with our family, friends and neighbours.

If you can’t go to work because you are self-isolating or at home waiting for a Covid test result the Government has also introduced some ﬁnancial support measures so you can still get paid. This also applies if you are self-employed. You can ﬁnd the details at www.workandincome.govt.nz/ covidcovid -19. None of this replaces the sad reality that many of the things we love to do together can’t happen at the moment. Last week, saw the cancellation of another great community event, the Malvern A&P show, this is in

the wake of many other lost or scaled back events over summer puts added pressure on our local businesses. Hopefully, within a few months, we’ll be through the worst of Omicron and our high vaccination rates in Selwyn will reduce the impact. We had each other’s back during the Lockdowns and we bounced back quickly. I know the same can happen as we face this new variant with the Traffic Light System. Sam, Broughton, Selwyn Mayor.

JANICE COLLIER MEMORIAL FUND The Nursing Trust was formed and responsible for managing funds. After a few years numbers dwindled due to the effects of droughts, which saw many farmers wives having to return to work and help their families in tough times. All members of the Group were qualified nurses and held a practising certificate. This group ran under the umbrella of the Medical Centre and the Darfield District Nurses, doing night sitting and relieving carers. The Group cared for patients predominately from the Malvern area, as well as some patients from Oxford, Methven and West Melton areas. They occasionally assisted at Westmar and Darfield Hospital. Janice approached some influential people in organisations for money and the late Judy Swain applied for funding from charitable funding organisations. The Group did a huge amount of fundraising including, cake stalls, lamb drives, golf events catering, raffles, and applied for funding grants. Originally the group was funded by the Cancer Society, but after all their fantastic work securing grants and fundraising, they managed to be able to fund

The late Janice Collier and Diana Reid set up the Malvern Cancer Support Group after they saw a need in the community for one. They both wanted people to be able to be looked after in their own homes and also give families a break when needed. In 1983, the group was formed and was the ﬁrst in Canterbury. There were about nine in the group at the time, and they met about every two months to organise assistance to those with cancer. Janice and Diana were both cancer survivors at the time and knew how much this group would be a valuable asset to the community, and this group continues its valuable work today. In 1985 the Nursing Group had thirty six attend its ﬁrst meeting.

the group off the interest from the money they had invested. Janice worked hard to retain health services for Darﬁeld and for the nursing group to retain its identity. Unfortunately, Janice passed away in April 1999, and in October 1999 the Janice Collier Memorial Fund was set up by the nurses, as an acknowledgement of the huge impact she had on the local community. The Fund was set up with the idea to help locals continue their education, with the hope the recipient might come back and help the local community in some way. Originally it was aimed at school leavers wanting to train to become nurses, but now it includes anyone training in general health that has lived in the Malvern area for the last two years. To apply for the Fund, people must submit their CV and cover letter introducing themselves and be studying in a general health area. The Nursing Group Committee plus a Trustee will assess the applicants and decide who the lucky person will be. This funding is to assist the recipient with expenses related to their studies. Applications are now being accepted for this annual memorial fund of up to $3,000. Applicants need to be studying in health or a health related field and are, or have recently been, a resident of the Malvern area.

Fortune Favours the Brave. But Lets Not be Stupid. We seem to be moving into a very risky phase in terms of house price sustainability, interest rate rises and job security. For the daredevils amongst us, it can be seen as a time to go for gold, but for the more risk-averse, a time to hold back and consolidate. In this climate, perhaps it is a time to do both, consolidate what you have, and put yourself in a good position to invest when good opportunities present themselves. There may be a drop in the housing market when interest rates start to bite, but be the one who has already tightened spending, so you don’t expose yourself to the pain. If you want to borrow for an investment, the banks will look very closely at credit checks done by other lenders, unarranged overdraft fees, late payment fees on accounts such as phone, power, sky, etc. Debt consolidation can be a great start to managing your money better, if you have two or more debts on high interest rates such as credit cards. Make 2022 count!

On the 10th of January 2022, whilst travelling from Bridge Street Coalgate to Darﬁeld along Homebush Road, my Farmlands overnight bag slid out of my vehicle window (all were down due to extreme temperatures). I was hoping by now that the bag and contents would have been handed into the Police. It contained three months of my heart and diabetic medicines, a laptop, digital camera, electric razor, medical alarm charger, cell phone charger, a rare collection of family, etc, coloured slides dating back to the 1950s, clothing, books, etc. The digital camera photo chip has scores of family, etc, images and the slides are desperately needed. To the Editor, For some years it has been my privilege to serve on a rural hall committee. We survived a threat of closure in 2005 and have seen some Mayors come and go. In the intervening time, we have greatly increased the hall usage and done our best to comply with all requirements of the Council. Despite forging a vibrant community in this process, we feel shocked and outraged on hearing that our committee will be closed down this June along with many others. Our community board member has only been able to assure us that this process is “mandated” and there is no alternative. I wish to pose the following questions: 1. Where did this initiative come from, and who is responsible for it? 2. Why was there no consultation with the wider community? 3. What gains will be made for the Council, by silencing these community voices? Over the last ﬁve years, there has been a tendency at the Government level to mandate changes without consultation. We hope this is not the case in this instance. John Oakley, Glenroy.

The Malvern News gave the Selwyn District Council the opportunity to reply to John Oakley’s letter. It is disappointing to hear that any member of a Community Committee of Council has not been aware of the lengthy process that has been undertaken by Selwyn Council over the past three years. Particularly given Council staff met with a full meeting of this committee last year to discuss this topic and all indications were that the committee was happy with the process. Conversations about possible changes to the structure of Committees of Council began in 2018 following the decision to introduce district-wide rating for all Council halls and community centres. Throughout the following three years the Council has engaged through Council reports, regular updates provided directly to committees, a survey, workshops, and summaries for the public through Council communications channels including news articles and letters in the Malvern News. The Council’s focus with this change has been on ensuring a system where ratepayers have consistent access and service at facilities and where volunteers are encouraged to be involved. We are grateful for the volunteers from the committee both past and who continue to be involved. In its most recent decision the Council conﬁrmed funding and a plan to support Residents’ Groups to encourage engagement and community voice. COAST TO COAST 2022 The famous Kathmandu Coast to Coast 40th Anniversary event, with high river levels in the Waimakariri Gorge, was forced to go to the Plan B course last weekend. For the One Day competitors it meant the second cycle leg changed from 17km to 112km, the paddle changed from 70km to 30km with the ﬁnal leg of the bike being a 12km sprint. The Malvern News team touched base with a few local competitors to see how their day went. Michael Draper (even though he currently lives in Hornby will always be known to most as a local) competed in the Individual One Day event again this year. For him, turning up and competing in the Coast to Coast is the same as a rugby player rocking up to play a game of rugby! Michael trains between 10 to 15 hours per week and this year had a coach as well. “It was a tough day with high river levels on the run. It was

nice not to have an easterly headwind on the way into town for once. Overall it was a very enjoyable day. I am so pleased we were still able to race given Covid 19 and the bad weather, even though we had to race the alternate Plan B course”, commented Michael. Michael's brother Tim, Tim was his support crew and those lucky enough to be friends on Snapchat with Tim got to see a lot of the race up close on the day. Overall, Michael spent over 5 hours running, 6 hours cycling and just under 2 hours on the river - ﬁnishing the event in 13 hours and 9 minutes. Emma Sampson competed in the 33km Mountain Run for the ﬁrst time. She entered the ballot last September and was offered an entry just three weeks before race day. She has been running on and off for years but in 2020 decided to get brave and have a go at some events. “One of my highlights of the day was when defending champion

Simone Maier came past me, I gave her a huge “woohoo” and got a big grin back from her’, Emma commented. “Another highlight was hearing my husband Mark and my three boys cheering me on in the last 2km, I thought they were at cricket so was a lovely surprise. “The lowlight was the last 3km which seemed to go on forever! “I ﬁnished the run in 6 hours, 13 minutes which resulted in 3rd in the Female Veteran 40-49 section”, concluded Emma.

Nothing’s a Problem!

Malvern U3A met on February 11th, 2022, at the Darﬁeld Baptist Church. The guest speaker was Fiona Brooker with a talk titled, The Magic of DNA. Fiona started with accountancy as her career, but moved to genealogy and retrained to become a professional genealogist. What started out as a school project became a lifestyle choice. Fiona loves to teach classes in genealogy as well as helping others to research their own family history. She explained the difference in DNA testing that the various companies do and how to complete the different sorts of tests. She acknowledged that many people who test their DNA do it for ethnicity reasons only and are not interested in tracing their family tree. Medicinal DNA for hereditary diseases should only

be done via health professionals. Fiona shared her own family history research story and how she broke through the ‘brick wall’, where there was little or no information on a member of her family. She demonstrated how DNA is shared by family members and explained why siblings do not have the exact same DNA.

Fiona also does DNA discovery classes and workshops, and is happy to work on a one-to-one basis. It was a most enjoyable talk, and I am sure those in the audience who have not yet done their DNA will be buying kits and sending off their swabs for analysis. Ruth Warren, Malvern U3A.

We had a very good turnout for our February garden walks. Our first visit was to Elizabeth Forrest’s Forrest garden and nursery, an expansive garden of beautiful natives, with a large lawn. Our next visit was to Linda Gregory’s Gregory garden, a fairly new garden with natives and flower beds all set in a lovely setting. Her daughter Jo who lives next door showed, us around her permaculture venture, an ongoing passion for her gardening. Her colourful flower garden was enjoyed by all. Our final garden was at the home of Lois Cameron and the variety of flower and shrub beds were impressive as the exposure to the elements is a constant threat. Everyone enjoyed wandering and viewing the many different plants, and a lovely supper ended a very enjoyable evening out. A discussion was held and it was agreed to go into recess until September due to the uncertainty of Covid. The committee will meet in August to reassess the situation. Lee Stokes.

PARLIAMENT PROTESTS The following is an open statement from Bryce McKenzie on behalf of Groundswell NZ. Groundswell NZs main focus continues to be on the unworkable regulations impacting the rural sector. Like increasing numbers of New Zealanders, farmers have felt badly maligned by this current Government and its policies. Like the protestors in Wellington, we also have been ignored by the Government and called

denigrating names. We can empathize with their frustration. Whether you agree or not with the people protesting on parliament grounds is not the debate anymore. What this Government, that proclaimed it would govern for all New Zealanders, has done is turn its back on a good number of its people. How hard can it be to at least front up and talk to the people assembled on parliament grounds? The ﬁnal straw for me and what prompted me to go

public, is the way Government is treating these people, turning the sprinklers on them knowing there was a storm coming, and playing loud music at night so as to not let them sleep and make them feel miserable, no farmer would treat animals like that! Although this protest has a different focus to Groundswell NZ, we support their right to be heard and cannot understand or agree with the Governments actions. What is becoming of our once united and proud country?

DRESSAGE SUCCESS Local equestrian rider, Lulu Maley and her wonderful pony Wembleybrook Barrington (Barry) came away with their biggest win to date at the Harcourts Four Season South Island Dressage Championships 2022, held on February 5th-7th. Lulu and Barry were the winners of the Dressage Otago Preliminary Pony Championship after three days of competition at the National Equestrian Centre at Mcleans Island. Not only taking out the Championship Lulu and Barry took out the overall Buckton

Tumbletown Champion Pony of all grades and the overall under twelve rider Championship, being one of the youngest riders in the group this was a great feat. Lulu and Barry have been a combination for just over a year. Barry was leased to Lulu from one of her Mum's (Nicola Nicola Maley) Maley dressage clients, Kylie and Ella Richardson, Richardson whom Lulu can't thank enough. Since coming together the partnership has just clicked. Not long after Barry arrived this pair won Champion Preliminary Pony at

the Future Stars Dressage Show last April and back in November they won Reserve Champion in the Canterbury Dressage Championships 2021. But, Lulu mentions that this latest win is her biggest and was extra special as her Mum could be there to watch as she couldn't make the Canterbury Champs before Christmas. Lulu would have really liked to have travelled to Horse of the Year in Hawkes Bay with Barry this March, but like most things it has now been cancelled, so now the plan is to train with her Mum with the goal of moving up a grade to Level 2 in dressage on Barry and her other dressage pony Clyde. But, this winter Barry and Lulu also look forward to doing some eventing with her Dad (Shane Shane Maley). Malvern women bowlers competed in the Women’s Fours competition at West Melton last Friday. The green was in good condition, and early drizzle gradually cleared to make the day more pleasant as it went on. A Kirwee team consisting of Rosie Croft (Skip), Anne May, Allison Lalor and Ana Gooch won with three wins and 24 ends, narrowly beating another Kirwee team with three wins and 21 ends. Much appreciation was shown for Helen Pearce, who has sponsored this event for many years, but who was unable to be present on the day. The prizes were awarded by Malvern Patron Dave Knight.
