On February 19th the 2022 Tasman Regional Final for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest will take place in Springston.

The organisers would love to see you there to support the contestants (Archie Woodhouse, Phoebe Smailes, Andrew Allan, Jonny Brown, Sam Smithers, Ash Foley, George Dodson, Blair Anglesey) as they go head to head in a variety of events.

Contestants will have the opportunity to be awarded points from the following categories; Agri-Knowledge and Agri-Business (100 points each), Agri-Sports (200 points) and Agri -Skills (400 points).

It will be a fun filled day celebrating farming, and at the end the next Tasman Young Farmer of the Year will be crowned.

Darfield Young Farmers member, Steph Kelly is this years convenor. Steph moved to Christchurch in March 2021 after spending the majority of her life in Palmerston North. She initially joined the Opiki Young Farmers Club and is now the secretary of the Darfield Young Farmers Club as well as the secretary of the Tasman Young Farmers region.

Competitors: Jonny Brown (31, Dunsandel Young Farmers, Farm Manager, Fourth Regional Final). Jonny manages a Dairy Holdings Ltd farm in Bankside, milking 1,300 cows on 341 hectares.

An industry he’s extremely passionate about, he’s spent his career working through the ranks of dairying, contract milking and farm management, mainly around Canterbury.

O-STUDIO OPENING Christchurch's O-Studio will bring its unique modern wellness model to Selwyn District in 2022 when it opens in the new Rolleston Fields development.

O-Studio opened in Christchurch in 2019, driven by the philosophy that mental wellbeing should be just as understood, accessible and practised as physical fitness is. As a professional rugby player of seventeen years, cofounder Tim Bateman had experienced first-hand how much a focus on mindset can improve overall performance and wellbeing. Joining forces with psychological fitness consultant, Sam Thomas, and yoga teacher, Jess Smith, the trio set about creating a space that would bring a better balance of mental and physical wellness to their members.

Two years on and with an established O-Studio community in Christchurch, the co-founders commented that the time is right to start bringing the concept to other parts of the country.

“As the fastest growing suburb in New Zealand, Rolleston is the

perfect place for us to establish our second O-Studio space,” Tim commented.

“The opportunity to be part of the new Rolleston Fields development, in the heart of this district, was too good for us to pass up. This will allow us to bring our mental and physical wellbeing ethos to this growing community and introduce more people to a better way of living,” Tim concluded.

Property owners in Selwyn will soon receive an updated rateable value for their property.

The revaluation was carried out

by Quotable Value (QV) on behalf of Selwyn District Council and showed that there has been a 33.7% average increase in capital values in Selwyn since the previous valuation in 2018.

The valuations are an estimate of the likely price that would have been paid for the property on September 1st, 2021.

Property owners should receive a letter with their updated property valuation by midFebruary.

The new values will be used for calculating rates from July 1st, 2022. Most property owners will find that the capital value of their property has increased, however, this does not mean their rates will also significantly increase.

Where a property value has increased more than the average increase in capital value (33.7%) a property owner can expect a slightly higher than average increase in their rates from July 1st, 2022, while property owners whose capital value increase was less than the average for Selwyn can expect a slightly lower than average increase in their rates.

The Council sets rates on July 1st each year based on the amount of income it needs to provide services for residents.

For most residential properties in

Selwyn, only around a quarter of their rates bill is based on the capital value of their property, with the balance of the rates set as a fixed amount per property based on the available services.

The large rise in capital value reflects the popularity of Selwyn and the Selwyn property market in recent years. The Selwyn district continues to be an attractive place to live, work, do business and raise a family as can be seen in the significant population growth since the last general revaluation in 2018.

This revaluation has seen residential (dwellings, flats and vacant residential land) capital value increase on average by 47.6%, while lifestyle properties increased on average by 34.6%, and dairy and pastoral properties increased on average by 12.5%.

Residential dwelling capital value changes varied across the largest towns, with average values increasing by 44.1% in Rolleston, 31.3% in Lincoln, 46.6% in Prebbleton and 31.4% in Darfield. Other townships showed similar increases, with Leeston increasing by 37.2%, West Melton 44.7%, Tai Tapu 31.1% and Southbridge 26.3%.

Residential values in the rural areas of Malvern increased by 41.3% and Ellesmere 35.6%.

40TH COAST TO COAST A scaled-back version of the 40th Kathmandu Coast to Coast will take place on February 12th, with only the Longest Day (243km course which includes a Mountain Run, Cycle and Kayak), One Day Teams (one member of each team tackles either the Mountain Run, Cycle or Kayak) and Mountain Run (a 30.5km run which crosses Goat Pass) categories going ahead due to Covid-19 Red Light Traffic Light settings.

“Government feedback has been that they do not want events to cease altogether, rather they’re asking events like ours to restructure to minimise contact of people as much as possible and reduce the potential of a mass spread as a result of the event,” commented Race Director, Glen Currie.

284 competitors will line up for the Longest Day and One Day Teams categories, starting in pods of less than 100, while 90 athletes will start in the Mountain Run from a completely different section of the course.

This is a significant decrease from the initial 1,400 registered athletes.

“The Longest Day is often described as the loneliest day by competitors. You’ve got 243 kilometres of course in a pretty remote setting to stretch out on, which fortunately for us enables

us to isolate competitors and support crews to a large extent,” Glen added.

Athletes’ support crews have been limited to just two people, while friends and family will be restricted from entering any of the athlete transition areas.

“Food and beverage offerings have also been cut, impacting several community groups that often rely on the revenue as part of their annual fundraising.

“We’ve traditionally been able to facilitate and donate up to $50,000 per event to the likes of Springfield, Sheffield and Moana Schools, Malvern Lions Club, Kumara Community Trust and a raft of others, but unfortunately, these changes to the event will have a knock-on effect,” Glen concluded.

The first wave of competitors will start from Kumara Beach at 7:00am on February 12th and are expected to begin arriving into the finish area at New Brighton beach any time after 4:30pm.

A small team consisting of Selwyn Police, St John, Fire and Emergency and NZ Defence Force will complete a 24-hour relay run for the fantastic I Am Hope Foundation. The event will take place from 12pm Saturday, February 12th until 12pm Sunday, February 13th at the Selwyn Sports Centre’s indoor track, all participants will be running 3 x 1 hour blocks over a 17 hour period each.

For the majority, this will be the longest/most they have ever run.

Two extra Police staff will also be aiming to run for the whole 24 hours. All those running have, in some way, been affected by suicide or mental health in their

day to day roles, and although this may be a challenge for some of them, it's nothing compared to what our young people face every day. The group are all extremely proud to be running for such a great charity.

Selwyn now has the most youth per capita in the country and there are many people of all shapes, sizes, colours, backgrounds who are really struggling in our community at the moment.

I Am Hope is the youth and community focused support group run by The Key to Life Charitable Trust, started by Mike King. MALVERN JUNIOR TENNIS The 2021/22 Malvern Junior Tennis Tournament was held on Saturday, January 29th. Forty players ranging in age from 1019 years old represented their Clubs from throughout the Malvern District (Darfield, Sheffield, Courtenay, West Melton, Hororata, Kirwee, Weedons) in the inaugural Tournament, held at the Darfield Tennis facilities.

The weather was great, the turnout fantastic and the games showed off all the skills the kids have learnt throughout the previous year from their weekly coaching and weekend games.

The day started with some great matchups with the first game for the boys 14 years between Trae Davis and Jack Molloy lasting close to two hours, it was a great game with almost every point

The Board meeting was held on Monday, January 31st, with the Chief Executive in attendance to assist and provide information. ♦ The uncertain future of the former St John building on North Terrace in Darfield, was noted. This building was previously the Malvern County Council building and suffered some damage in the 2010 Darfield earthquake. The Board is hosting a meeting on Tuesday, February 15th, at 7.30pm, at the Darfield Recreation Centre to allow the community to ascertain if there is enough public interest to repair and retain the building for future use. Please come to the meeting and share your ideas. ♦ The Board is resuming its ‘Talk with the Board’ drop-in sessions, with the first being in Springfield on Monday, February 14th at 3.30pm. These sessions are an opportunity for Springfield and the surrounding community to share their thoughts and ideas for the area. Council staff also attend to provide information and answers and take away suggestions. The March workshop will be with the Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass communities on Sunday, March 13th. ♦ Community Committees are undergoing a restructure of their role within the community and how they liaise with the Council. The solution may be individual for each committee and community. The Board will continue to update you as information is received and decisions are made. All halls and community centres will be managed by Council from mid-2022. ♦ The Board also noted that Council has allocated $25,000 from the Township Public Art Acquisition Fund for a public artwork on suitable Council owned land in Malvern Ward and looks forward to being involved in this process. An award-winning dairy farmer, the born and bred West Coaster won the 2021 West Coast/Top of the South Dairy Trainee of the Year. He spent three years studying geology at Canterbury University before deciding to go dairy farming.

Phoebe Smailes (19, Lincoln Young Farmers, Student, Firsttime competitor). Phoebe is currently studying at Lincoln University and working casually across sheep and beef farms in the Manawatū/ Rangitikei during term breaks.

She has worked in a range of roles as a representative in the arable industry since then and credits being a ‘townie’ to allowing her to have a diverse point of view.

George Dodson (20, Lincoln Young Farmers, Dairy Farmer, First Regional Final). George has spent the last two seasons as second in charge on a dairy farm in Canterbury. After finishing high school, he went straight into the dairy sheds and hasn’t looked back.

Andrew Allan (21, Lincoln Young Farmers, First-time competitor). Andrew finished studying a Bachelor of Agri Commerce at Lincoln University at the end of 2021.

He has completed two summer work placements on sheep and beef properties in Southland/Otago and spent one summer as a soil moisture probe technician.
