Tegan Fitzsimon has won her third POLi Payments FEI World Cup (NZ League) Series after a nail-biting victory in the Final in Hawera on Saturday, January 29th. The West Melton rider steered her beloved horse, Windermere Cappuccino to double clear over the Gary Sinclair designed course at the Taranaki Equestrian Jumping World Cup Final Show but hot on her heels was young gun Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) who was second aboard Waitangi Skynet and third on Glenbrooke Rich as Roses. Twelve combinations started in the Final, with ten combinations coming back for the second round, however,

everyone but Tegan and Sophie aboard Waitangi Skynet, carried penalties from the first round. Running in reverse order, it came down to the wire with Tegan having to go double clear and faster than Sophie’s 58.34 second effort to secure the Final. The queen of cool came out firing, and while Windermere Cappuccino looked a little more of a handful than in the first round, they crossed the flags in 57.46 seconds. Tegan admitted going last in the running order was not her favourite spot, but the pressure was off a little when Sophie notched a double clear as Tegan knew then she had the series in the bag. Tegan’s win gave her a perfect

UPPER WAIKIRIKIRI SELWYN RIVER Just to remind readers after a community meeting was held at the end of 2021 about the Upper Waikirikiri Selwyn River catchment, organisers of the meeting thought it would be a good idea to gauge the different values people place on the river, how much people want to be involved in a group or with river

care actions, and what stands out as priority issues for a potential group to focus on. The meeting organisers have created a short eight-question survey to gauge people’s opinions. The more responses they get the easier it will be for them to set up a group and get the ball rolling. Please keep in mind that this isn't a focus on one particular sector, but on the river itself. The organisers envisage that there will be a group made up of all sorts from the community, from holidaymakers, farmers, ﬁshers, etc.

SUMMER IN SELWYN EVENTS Thousands of residents have been enjoying Summer in Selwyn events around the district. The summer fun events are now halfway through. This year’s packed events calendar has seen a huge range of events from crafts to sports, movies, and a market, with all Summer in Selwyn events still on for now under the Red setting, right up to the end of March. While capacity limits are in place and some further restrictions may apply, the Selwyn District Council has been planning for the possibility of restrictions and at this stage all events are able to continue. Among this year's new events, ninja training was a hit, providing big smiles for the aspiring ninjas. The annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic saw 1,200 children and adults and even more teddies enjoying a fun day out in the sun. Along with pony rides, face painting, bouncy castles and the annual teddy

bear parade children and bears were excited by a visit from Spiderman and a host of Disney princesses. New events to come include social sport taster sessions at the Selwyn Sports Centre, learning archery with the Ellesmere Archery Club, events about our environment with sessions on the migration of Selwyn's bird flocks and native plant propagation, a Star Wars quiz and learning the art of mixing your own mocktails for the adults among others. Other highlights will include the first ever Bark in the Park event at the end of February, with two hours of a pawesome day out to celebrate furry friends at Brookside Park in Rolleston, featuring six-legged egg and spoon race, best-dressed dog and more. Lincoln saw the first of ten picnic in the park events, with the expanded list of picnics aiming to bring the community fun

around the district with music, entertainment, a free sausage sizzle and more to enjoy in the evening sunshine. The popular ‘A Month of Sundays’ events of live music and fun garden games are back in Lincoln with local music talent performing at the Lincoln Green next to Lincoln Library every Sunday afternoon in February. The season’s pool parties will end with the Pool of Rock party in the main pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February 12th, where local musicians will be performing. LOCALS ATTEND BOWLING COMPS The 70th Taranaki Women’s Open Fours was held in New Plymouth on January 25th-30th, with alterations to the format made due to the traffic light red conditions. The Competition is the second biggest in New Zealand after the Nationals Tournament. A local combined Darfield and Kirwee Bowling Club team consisting of Hazel Littlejohn, Jo Latter, Susan Baldwin, and Marian Galloway competed. The team won two of their six games over the first three days of play. Eliminated from the Fours competition, the team, divided into pairs and competed in the Pairs Competition for the remaining two days. The pairs team consisting of Hazel Littlejohn and Jo Latter made it to the final four and were placed third equal on Saturday.

SELWYN MP UPDATE For those of us still in a summer holiday daze, the news that inflation has hit a thirty year high will be an unwelcome reality check. At 5.9 per cent, inflation is now the highest it has been since 1988 and, with wage growth of only 2.4 percent, New Zealanders are going backwards. First home buyers from around Canterbury, and New Zealand, have in recent years flocked to Selwyn to buy what were once affordable house and land packages but news like this will be a real cause for concern for them. It is largely being driven by huge Government spending, which has been 40 percent higher than under the previous National Government. This year Grant Robertson is planning to raise that to a staggering 68 percent more at $128 billion, with $6 billion in new spending. While elevating spending was appropriate through much of the pandemic, some easing off is now required. National isn’t necessarily calling for no new

spending but there needs to be a much greater focus on the quality of it, as well as some form of debt repayment plan. As well as rapidly rising housing costs and fuel costs, you’ll likely notice your grocery bill blowing the budget. The cost of food is impacted by the massively increased cost of production, which is being driven by a terribly tight labour market. This week we have learned of an unbelievable level of incompetence from the Immigration Minister that will have huge ramifications for food production and supply in New Zealand. On December 12th, Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor announced he had created new border exception classes for 200 mobile plant machinery operators, forty shearers and fifty wool handlers. But, instead of enabling those, Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi, went missing in action. He didn’t sign off on the new immigration instructions that would allow these workers to apply for visas

until January 21st, six weeks after the announcement was made by Minister O’Connor. As rural Canterbury will know, these are time-critical workers. They need to be here in February for the grain harvest, but with Kris Faafoi’s lack of action, it simply won’t happen. It turns out that of the one hundred and fifty harvesters who had expressed an interest in working in New Zealand, just forty applicants are still in the mix, with most having just given up and gone to Australia. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that if the 2022 harvest is late or reduced because of a lack of workers, this will directly impact the price of basic food items like flour, bread and potatoes. SUCCESSFUL CANTERBURY TEAMS During the second week of January, the New Zealand Pony Club association held their South Island Championship week at Mandeville Sports Centre. Over this period, the Dressage (the

highest expression of horse training where the horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements), Show Jumping (a competitive

equestrian event in which a horse and rider are required to jump a course of obstacles within a time limit and without occurring any faults if possible) and Mounted Games (a branch of equestrian sport in which fast games are played on ponies up to a height of 15 hands) Championships were all held. The competition was intense, but the Canterbury teams were up for the challenge with all three Canterbury teams winning the southern division. This meant

these teams had to wait a week to see how they compared amongst the national totals once the North Island Championship week had taken place. The wait was worthwhile, with both the Show Jumping team (Jordan Shrimpton, Johanna Wylaars, Fabriana McQuarrie, Sonya Benison, Eva Wylaars, Cru Walker-Neill) and Mounted Games team (Leah Zydenbos, Luci Shanks, Gemma Lewis, Dustin Rowlands, Sam Partington) narrowly taking

their titles, along with the Dressage team (Charlotte Thomas, Georgina Fryatt, Gemma Lewis, Katie Doncliff, Katie Fitzsimons, Daniel Thomas) receiving a close second place ﬁnish. Captains, Charlotte Thomas, Jordan Shrimpton and Leah Zydenbos were all unanimous in thanking the hard work of the officials, parents, fellow competitors and their ponies whom all made the competition so competitive and successful.

I am so thankful to have the ride on him and share joint ownership with

the Parkes family. “Vollie (Windermere Cappuccino) got a little toey out there and I think we had a bit of luck on our side. The course rode really well too and was nice and ﬂowing which suited us. He is quite a short-striding horse and I had to switch to plan B coming into the treble, but otherwise, it was all as I thought it would be. “I am very happy to have won

both the Final and the Series. We are now aiming for the National Championships in early February, but the horses will have a little break in the coming days,” Tegan concluded. Tegan congratulated the show committee for putting on a topclass event, with near perfect footing for the horses, and in challenging times.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET Leeston-Southbridge(Lee-Bridge) defeated Darfield in a top of the table clash at Leeston Park on Saturday, January 29th, but despite the loss, Darfield remain ahead on points. Winning the toss and batting first, the hosts lost an early wicket to Zak Foulkes before ticking the run rate, along with patient singles and the occasional boundary. Batting partnerships were created, but nothing of significance was established until Harry and Sam Chamberlain partnered up. Harry was dismissed for a patient 62 with the team score at 126/4, by an exceptional catch on the boundary by Andrew 'buckets' Bell from the bowling of Will Greenslade. Sam Chamberlain was dismissed for 48 just as he would have been looking to increase the tempo in the 39th over. The tail wagged and produced a high energy finish, especially Chris Beatson, who was dismissed from the final ball of the innings, for a robust 36 from only 23

balls. Requiring 229 to win, Zak Foulkes was unusually subdued in the chase and found scoring difficult as Leeston's bowlers found their lines early. His stay lasted 29 balls for only 6 runs, but Nick Gilbert boofed his way to 32 and was disappointed not to carry on after making a fine start. The second innings mirrored the first as a partnership formed through the middle overs between Jesse Frew and Ryan Hughes but when Hughes fell to a rank full toss for 26 runs, the pressure increased on Frew to maintain a required run rate of 6 per over. Darfield's innings could not replicate Lee-Bridges at the end and the following batters were not able to get under the ball and heave it over the boundary. Even when Frew fell for a well-crafted 79 runs, there was still a chance, but LeeBridge bowled sensible length's and set just as sensible fields to leave Darfield dismissed in the 44th over for 201.
