The New South Wales Waratahs have bolstered their forward pack with the signing of ex-local Geoff Cridge ahead of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Geoff was born and bred in the Kirwee/Darfield area, attending Christchurch Boys High School and represented New Zealand U20’s before moving north to sign for the Hurricanes under Chris Boyd, making his Super Rugby debut for the side during their 2016 Championship winning season.

Geoff who cuts an imposing figure at just over 200cm, further strengthens the Waratahs’ Head Coach Darren Coleman’s depth at lock, following the return of Jed Holloway for the 2022 season.

After a couple of seasons of playing provincial rugby in New Zealand, Geoff is excited to be playing Super Rugby again.

“The last two years I’ve had off I’ve had an itch to play Super Rugby, so to get another chance here with the Waratahs is

Ex-local Geoff Cridge. something I’m definitely going to make the most of,” Geoff commented.

“There’s a good group of lads in the team, everyone rallies around each other and stays well connected. No one is bigger than the team and it’s a great environment to be a part of and I can’t wait for the season to start,” Geoff concluded.

After an impressive season for Hawke’s Bay in the ITM Cup in 2021 where he was awarded the team’s best forward award, Darren Coleman saw enough of the big lock to bring him to the Waratahs.

“Obviously, I’m a massive fan of the Shute Shield and it will

always be my first port of call for talent, however, it’s been no secret that within this team we have been on the lookout to find a high-quality tight head lock, and unfortunately we were unable to find one there,” Darren commented.

To the Editor: It is disappointing that we (Hororata Community Trust) have had to cancel the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet, but the world we are living in at the moment is so unpredictable, so unfortunately this is not unexpected. We will not give up and the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet will happen again one day. As a community, we need to look at how we can adapt and run events safely while following Government guidelines. This is something the Hororata Community Trust is putting thought into at the moment.

To the Editor, At the last Sheffield Waddington Township Committee (SWTC) meeting, there was a discussion regarding the placing of Christmas lights on the Main Road.

These lights were a most welcome attraction to Sheffield, prompting several favourable comments regarding them.

The Committee would like to publicly acknowledge and thank the efforts of those responsible for the lights.

Maybe this will encourage more lights to be erected in both towns next Christmas?

I have had a lot of people approach me recently regarding a post on facebook about dogs getting sick or passing away after trips to the river.

The below article outlines what is potentially toxic algae, what to look for and what do if you suspect your dog has eaten potentially toxic algae.

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE A trip to the river is a lot of fun and knowing how to keep your dog safe means you are able to relax and enjoy the adventure even more. Potentially toxic algae can be harmful to dogs (and us).

The best thing you can do to keep yourself, your children and your dog safe is to know what potentially toxic algae looks like

and avoid it.

If you are not sure, keep your dog on a lead at a stony river, and don’t let them in or near the water. Bring water from home for your dog so that they don’t need to drink out of the river.

What is potentially toxic algae?

Freshwater algae are naturally occurring in rivers and lakes in New Zealand, including waterways with good water quality. Most algae is harmless, if a bit slimy, but one group of algae, known scientifically as cyanobacteria, can be toxic. In rivers, this potentially toxic algae is called Phormidium. Most of the year it is present at low levels not causing much danger. But it can be a problem during the summer months, when low rainfall, warm temperatures and more sunlight create an environment where it can thrive. In parts of stony-based rivers it can form extensive mats which can be toxic to humans, dogs, livestock and wildlife.

Scientists do not yet understand when and why this algae turns toxic, so to be safe, always treat it as toxic.

Dogs are particularly susceptible to poisoning from toxic algae as they love to scavenge and play near water.

What to look for

“YOUR LOCAL VETS IN ROLLESTON”

In parts of stony based rivers toxic algae form soft, leathery-looking mats on rocks in the riverbed. These mats range in

colour from blackish/brown to dark green (it's quite different from normal harmless green algae, which looks bright green and often forms long strings).

These mats can come loose and wash up on the edge of the rivers, or form ‘floating rafts’ in shallow areas. As they dry out they turn light brown or white and look like dried leaves or cowpats. They produce a strong musty smell, and this is when it poses the biggest risk to our dogs, as they love the smell and many dogs will try to eat it if they get the chance.

Council staff monitor for these mats in parts of rivers where these are known to form, often in shallow areas. Staff are not able to monitor all parts of rivers, so please learn what to look for and alert your regional or unitary council when you see algal mats so they can warn other people.

What if my dog has eaten potentially toxic algae?

If you suspect that your dog has eaten toxic algae, you should contact your vet as soon as possible. Signs a dog has been poisoned by toxic algae include lethargy, muscle tremors, fast breathing, twitching, paralysis and convulsions.

ACROSS THE LINE Te Huanui’s first exhibition of 2022, ‘Across the Line’ highlights the importance of connections made through art. Through our connections built with artists across the Selwyn, Kaikoura and Ashburton districts, we’ve been able to bring an exciting range of work to the Gallery to celebrate the beginning of 2022.

We’re extremely grateful for the support from Judy Kleis, Stuart Mitchell, Carlos Ramirez and Peter Cruickshank, Blanche Fryer, Hilary Barrer, Jill Lemon and Averil Southward of the Ellesmere Art Group to get this exhibition across the line.

Judy Kleis has a background in design and sculpting, her passion for painting blossoming over the past sixteen years, with tuition from Karen James for the first six years, working in a range of mediums. Judy’s work on display is a reflection of her extensive travels throughout New Zealand and Europe which have inspired her to try a variety of techniques from still life to ‘capturing the moment’. Each of her paintings inspires her to delve deeper and satisfy her thirst for knowledge.

Stuart Mitchell has always had an interest in pulling things apart and fixing them, with no formal training, he taught himself to weld, creating stunning sculptures.

Stuart has won awards at New Zealand Rural Art Festivals, leading him to set up a studio and workshop, sourcing old tools to his one of a kind works that audiences enjoy viewing.

Carlos Ramirez, a local Selwyn resident, living in Rolleston since 2014. Originally from Chile, he has always loved

Artwork by Judy Kleis. different forms of art since a child, but since he put his feet on New Zealand shores his passion for art has developed further.

Carlos enjoys New Zealand landscapes and outdoor spaces, with a rustic forgotten feeling.

His inspiration comes from the colours of sunsets and sunrises which creates a feeling of calmness. He considers himself as a surrealist and abstract artist, so based on that, in his works you can see mountains etc with a different tone or colour based on moods, and feelings.

The Ellesmere Art Group was established as a Charitable Trust in 1996 and they originally based themselves at the Irwell Hall and later at the then closed Catholic School, in Leeston.

In 2017, a subcommittee was formed to open and manage the Lakeland Art Gallery at 80 High Street, Leeston. There’s a large showroom where members can display art for sale throughout the year. There’s a good variety of paintings, sculptures, ceramics

and glassware at all times.

Displays are changed each month and often have a featured artist wall also. There is a workshop area attached to the gallery where members meet and paint on Wednesdays. A life drawing group runs every Thursday evening each school term. Popular tutored workshops take place at least once a month, these can be paintings in any of the mediums, printing, drawing, clay making, mosaic, glasswork, de-coupage and paverpol.

The Gallery is run entirely by volunteers who are either artists in their own right and enjoy painting whilst on duty or lovers of the art world. If you would like more details Lakeland can be found on Facebook and Instagram.

‘No vaccine pass is required to enter the Gallery. Due to red light restrictions, no exhibition opening will be held on Friday, January 28th.

Drench resistance has been identified in Canterbury in three commonly used drenches (fenbendazole, oxfendazole and doramectin) plus there is a strong suspicion of resistance in moxidectin, the drench that works most effectively for encysted small strongyles.

NICU Cuddle Hearts coordinator, Lisa Paget was over in Australia last year after she had twin nieces born very premature and discovered that in their NICU they use wee fabric hearts for comfort for mums and bubs.

“Mum wears one in her bra and bub has one under their wee head, then after 24 hours, they swap them over. This helps mums milk supply, settles bub and helps with bonding. I did some research and found out that we don’t do this in New Zealand, so I came home and decided that I would try and start the programme here,” Lisa explained.

“I started advertising for sewers and fabric and the response has been overwhelming. I’m thrilled to say that I have managed to make this programme a success in the Christchurch NICU, with the help of the CDHB, Selwyn District Council and so many wonderful folk helping me make the hearts.

“My dream would be to see this throughout New Zealand, but of course, that will be a huge mission which I am still trying to work out just how to achieve this. It’s not impossible but will take some doing, as there is a lot involved working behind the scenes with the DHB to make this work.

“I would like to thank the Darfield folks who have been so amazing and have been making the NICU Cuddle Hearts for my amazing project, the response has been overwhelming.

“In the next week or so, there will be more packs at your library to make hearts, so you are more than welcome to pop along and pick up a pack of fabric and a pattern and make some hearts for our precious wee ones in our NICU,” Lisa concluded.

WEST MELTON BOWLING CLUB Most pre-Christmas competitions were completed with some good results being achieved by West Melton Teams. West Melton 1, ably skipped by Bill Paekau and Mike Lee, won the Centre Men’s 2x4’s Division 2 Competition to earn promotion to Division 1 this year. In the Centre Women’s 5’s Competition the West Melton Women’s team gained third place in their respective division.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, the finals of the Malvern Fives Competition which were to be played pre-Christmas will now be played in late January early February. Three West Melton teams have qualified for the finals, West Melton 1 (Premier) West Melton 4 and West Melton 5 (Senior).

Darfield High School student Lexi Thomson Hall had the honour of having Sir Bob Charles officially present her with golfing trophies she won at the end of 2021.

The presentation took place at the Clearview Golf Club. Lexi received the 2021 Clearwater Women's Bronze A Club Champion and The Clearwater Most Improved Ladies Trophy.

Also, a couple of years ago, Lexi had the opportunity to caddie for Sir Bob at the Hororata Golf Club.

The Men’s Club Championship Triples Competition was concluded on December 8th.

Congratulations to Terry Butland, Roye Daniel and Andy

Weber who were declared the winning team after finishing with seven wins from eight games.

The Men’s Club Championship Fours were played over two days on December 18th and 19th.

Congratulations to Roye Daniel, John Waller, Graeme Carr and Mike Lee who completed the championship undefeated.

Competitions at the start of this year for West Melton teams

include Centre Men’s 8’s, Men’s Club Pairs, Men’s Club Singles, Women’s Club Triples, Women’s Club Pairs, Women’s Singles and Super Pairs which is played on Saturday afternoons. Social Bowls will start on Thursday 10th February at 6.30 pm.

BOUNDARY FENCING The Fencing Act 1978 contains the majority of the law regarding fencing between neighbouring properties. However, it is possible for property owners to enter into agreements or covenants, which may be registered on the record of title and impact on subsequent owners.

If a fencing covenant is registered after April 1st, 1979 it will automatically expire twelve years from the date it was registered, unless it relates to local authority land. If it was registered before this time, it may run forever with the land, therefore binding all subsequent owners.

If there is no agreement between neighbours to the contrary, then the law provides the following: 1. Fences are usually to be constructed on the boundary line. There is provision for compromise when the true boundary is difficult to fence.

2. The cost of construction and maintaining an ‘adequate’ boundary fence is borne equally between neighbouring owners.

However, if one owner damages the fence then usually the cost of repairs will fall on that owner.

3. You can compel a neighbouring owner to

contribute to the cost of a boundary fence by following the procedures set out in the Fencing Act. If the correct procedure is not followed the owner of the adjoining land will not be liable to contribute to the cost of the fence.

4. If you are looking to purchase a section in a newly developed subdivision, be mindful that developers may exempt themselves from contributing to the cost of the boundary fencing.

Alternatively, they may have already fenced (or will do so by settlement) and may require you to pay a contribution to that cost in addition to the purchase price of the section.

5. Some land covenants and District and Regional Plans regulate matters such as the height, colour, and fencing materials that are permitted. You should be aware of these restrictions before constructing or modifying any fencing.

When purchasing a property check the Agreement and the title to the land to see whether or not there is a fencing covenant or agreement in place.

If there is an existing fence,

consider the condition of it and whether it appears to have been constructed on the boundary line. You may need a surveyor to conclusively establish where the boundary line is.

If you are unsure about your rights and obligations in respect of fencing, wish to provide notice to an adjoining owner pursuant to the legislation, or are in a dispute about a fence, please contact us.

Just before Christmas NZ MenzShed sent out a request to Sheds to help the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust who were asking for urgent help to make up Blue Penguin nesting boxes as they had lost a lot of them when that heavy rainfall caused slips and washed them away.

Darfield MenzShed decided to help the Trust, so over the last few weeks we have built and painted ten boxes. Chairman Neil Roberts handed them over to the Tai Tapu office on Friday, January 21st, and confirmed there was no charge for materials, labour, or delivery.

We hope that they will be cosy Kainga for the penguin families.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Malvern Rifle Club held their Club Day on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022, consisting of 10 counting shots at 500 and 600 yards. The day was hot and warm, with an almost cloudless sky greeting shooters.

At 500 yards, there was little wind moving the flags, but a mirage was clearly visible. As usual, some shooters read the wind better than others.

After an afternoon tea break, shooters moved back to the 600 yard mound. As forecast, a southerly change was starting to

come through, with conditions becoming overcast and cooler.

The flags showed more wind, but it was fickle, varying in pressure and angle.

Some shooters were using the day as a test/development day with their scores not reported at their request.

The January 29th shoot is a 3 Range Aggregate, with 7 counting shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards. Set-up is at 12:30pm for a 1pm start.
