Christmas and New Year are times when incidents of mental health and suicide can affect folks. For anyone struggling, take the time to talk to a friend, see your local GP, call one of the 0800 helplines, Crisis Intervention Team, or just drop into the Police Station. We will listen to you in confidence, offer advice and put you in touch with agencies that can provide the appropriate help and assistance to you. Canterbury Highway Patrol Teams will have a heavy presence on our roads over the Summer holiday period and in particular, will be increasing the number of alcohol checkpoints throughout the Canterbury District. If you are out socialising and consuming alcohol the message is to have a plan to get home safely. This may include having a sober driver, making use of the licensed premises courtesy van, staying the night at your host’s place, catching a taxi, or walking home. When travelling away for your holiday break, plan your journey, stop each hour or two and have a wee walk or coffee break to keep you alert and refreshed. Keep your speed down, stay patient and be considerate of other road users. Please give cyclists on the roads a wide berth when passing them on our roads. For folks getting away for a holiday or break, please ensure that your home and farm security is up to scratch. Having a housesitter stay in your house may be one consideration. Having your neighbour check your property daily is a great idea too. Ensure your house and outbuilding are locked and secure, the front gate shut, locked and any valuable possessions and machinery on your property are well secured and locked away in a safe building. Never leave vehicles, especially four wheel drives, trailers etc, parked on the roadside outside your property, it’s far safer to have them secured away in a locked garage or just parked up your driveway with the front gate shut and locked. Ensure your alarms, security cameras are all functioning. Generally, locally when there have been Lockdowns and Covid restrictions our local communities have complied with the rules and regulations which the Government has implemented on the advice of the Ministry of Health. Police would like to thank the community for this. Remember to continue to practice social distancing and always wear a mask when out in public places and shopping. If you have not been vaccinated for Covid, now is a good time to seriously consider doing so. For young folks leaving school and heading off to university or the workforce, we wish you all the best of luck with your endeavours. I am sure the All Blacks will be taking a break with their families over the Summer too and no doubt thinking about developing a game plan and plan B for the future. On the bright side, some of the young Canterbury rugby players have really stood up for the All Blacks, none more so than Ethan Blackadder and Will Jordan. Take a well earned break away over the Summer holidays, travel safely on the roads and keep safe. Andy, Hamish, Blair, Scott (currently relieving Darfield) and Brendan (Highway Patrol). Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! From the team at Bridgestone, Darfield. 6 South Terrace, Darfield Ph: 03 318 8201 M: 027 434 0060
