Once again, there was a wonderful turnout for the Christmas Creations and Farmers Market last Sunday at the RejuvenateYou Hub, Springfield.

Some comments from the stallholders included, ‘Best market sells’, ‘Sold out of product’, ‘Looking forward to next year’ and from the supportive and loyal customers, ‘Wonderful festive atmosphere’, ‘Great little market’ and ‘Wonderful variety of goodies’.

“The stalls and products were all of a high standard, and everyone should be proud of their creations and sharing their love and passions. It was also very exciting to see ‘mother and daughters’ teaming up together with their own flair and style, and a good sign that the Market’s future is going from strength to strength,” commented Hub owner Ainsley Burton.

“The Christmas Raffle was once again well supported, raising $390 at this stage for the Tawera Reserve Project in Springfield. All stallholders kindly donated a gift

and there will be several winners drawn on Friday, December 10th, 2021. If you get in quick you still might be in time to buy a ticket! $2 for one ticket and $5 for three tickets.

outside stallholders to create their own atmosphere under the trees, which added another great feel to the market.

NO CHRISTMAS GROTTO FOR 2021 The annual Darfield Christmas Grotto is unfortunately another Covid casualty this year, but the Malvern Community Board is delighted to announce that Father Christmas will still be travelling around New Zealand on Christmas Eve to do his regular yearly and contactless night deliveries.

Unfortunately, this year our Darfield Christmas Grotto where the Board hosts Father Christmas is not able to take place due to the restrictions of the space available and therefore the

inability to ensure no contact would take place.

However, we have the promise that should these restrictions disappear in 2022 then Father Christmas will be back, in the same place, at the same time for next Christmas.

Thank you for your understanding. Over the years this has been a very popular

place to visit Father Christmas and the Board is pleased to be involved.

Russell and Sue Dalzell, owner/ operators of Possum Pam, are enjoying being in Rolleston and love the fact that they are now able to have a local factory retail outlet, bringing their wonderful cosy slippers right to your doorstep.

Russell and Sue have been manufacturing quality New Zealand made sheepskin slippers since 1998, building the business up from a small market stall to where they are today, currently hiring ten staff.

“We have fantastic staff and couldn’t be happier helping locals with employment opportunities,” Russell said.

They shifted from their home base in Dunsandel to Rolleston in September last year.

“We had been looking for a new place to relocate to and when the Rolleston factory came up we jumped at it. We are amongst a great bunch of businesses who are all very supportive and we are very pleased with how the locals have come out and supported us,” he added.

Possum Pam predominantly makes sheepskin slippers, from adorable baby booties right through to adult sizes. There are mid-calf boots and custom-made Bespoke slippers for people who have special needs.

“It is surprising how many people come to our outlet store

or contact us, when they can’t get what they need in retail shops,” Russell concluded.

They also sell possum accessories, leather belts, sheepskins and cowhide rugs.

They have a selection of lower grade sheepskins which are very popular as pet mats.

Possum Pam supply to numerous shops across the board spanning the length of New Zealand. They use New Zealand materials wherever possible and are one of only four companies left in New Zealand selling these types of products because of the influence of Chinese imports.

At Possum Pam everything is done onsite. It has become increasingly important to buy local, reduce carbon miles and retain as much of our manufacturing base as we can.

People are very conscious of the benefit of buying products that haven’t travelled halfway around the world to get to here.

NEW LOOK FOR LOCAL BUSINESS The Christmas fairies have been hard at work in the newly refurbished Fat Beagle Cafe, and the team would like to warmly invite you to join them in celebration on December 16th for a Platters and Pressies evening.

Rachel Ferguson from Dalethorpe House (the shop above) took over the Cafe in August and has put her magic touch on the downstairs area.

“It is such a beautiful building, one of the oldest in Darfield, with its weatherboard exterior and original interior of kauri. It’s been so exciting to give it a new sparkle to match its timeless style,” commented Rachel.

“Originally the town’s General Store, built-in 1914, it feels right to have it back under one team,” Rachel concluded. With the interior looking amazing, Rachel and the team turned their attention to the courtyard, which looks amazing with its new gardens and furniture.

The team are very keen to celebrate their first Christmas together, and the Dalethorpe House Specials on the night will be Rachel’s way of saying a heartfelt thanks for your support in what has been another tough year for the district in so many ways.

SUPPORT LOCAL It’s time to start thinking about Christmas shopping and holiday plans. Give your dollars to Kiwi families by supporting local businesses this summer. It has been an exceptionally tough two years for many hospitality, retail and tourism businesses and if we don’t spend our money locally, we risk losing some of our favourite places.

Here are some suggestions on ways you can help: If you usually jump in the car and head into Christchurch, you could be missing out on some gems closer to home. Is there a florist around the corner?

A gallery down the road? A boutique or gift shop you drive past twice a day but haven’t stopped to check out? You never know what they might be hiding.

Buy local produce, they’re usually fresher and often cheaper than you’ll find in the Christchurch supermarkets, but

the perks of buying locallygrown fruit and veges don’t end there. Buying fresh produce at a farmers’ market means your cash goes straight to the grower while shopping at your local greengrocer’s supports their business as well as the farmer’s.

The same goes for independent butchers and bakers, you’ll never buy fresher and spending with small businesses directly benefits the local economy.

Use local websites, the internet brought the world and all its shopping to little old New Zealand. But just because you can buy from Amazon or Book Depository doesn’t mean you should.

Many local businesses have an online store and for some, it’s their only retail platform.

Rethink gifts and plan ahead, we’re all guilty of a quick dash to Christchurch for a last-minute birthday present or gift card, but

that doesn’t have to be the way.

Buy a voucher from a local business, either for yourself or to give to someone.

Spread the word, while every dollar spent with a local business helps their bottom line, it costs nothing to recommend them. If you’ve had a good experience with a small business, don’t just tell your friends, tell the world by writing an online review. Take visitors to your favourite cafe or restaurant, follow them on social media, share their posts and tag your friends to enter competitions.

Because keeping the customers coming through the doors is the only way to keep our small retailers and service providers running.

CHRISTMAS IN THE DOMAIN The Hororata Community Trust, along with the Hororata Parish and Hororata Fire Brigade invite people to, ‘Christmas in the Domain’ on Sunday, December 19th.

“This is a free event for the community to come together, relax and celebrate. Thanks to the Malvern Community Board we will have lots of free activities, including soft archery, Pedalmania, face painting, balloon twisting and much more.

The Hororata Fire Brigade will have their slip n slide set up, so kids should bring their togs!” said Cindy Driscoll, Hororata Community Trust.

“There will be lots of performances on stage, and everyone can join in with the Christmas Carols. During the last hour, we will have the ‘Thingymajig’ band to entertain us.

“This event has been in the planning process for six months, and we are really excited to be able to put it on. We have had to make some changes to comply with the Governments Covid regulations.

“This means vaccine certificates will be needed for people to enter the event, and we will be scanning these at the gate.

Teacher, Alex McGregor, Alyssa Collings who was awarded the Excellence in Dance Award for 2021 and Tara McKeown, owner and teacher of TM Dance World.

On Wednesday, December 1st, the students and families of TM Dance World held their end of year awards and exam presentations in the beautiful setting of Racecourse Hill Homestead. It was nice to be able to get everyone together in a relaxed environment to celebrate the student’s successes for the year.

In July, forty five students participated in their Acrobatic Arts exams, but due to Covid these were held online in the studio and our lovely examiner Miss Penny was on zoom from Australia! This was all very different for teachers and students to examine this way, but everyone rose to the occasion and we were pleased with how it went! We were delighted to award twenty one Distinction level passes across all levels.

In September, over seventy students completed their annual Asia Pacific Dance Association (APDA) exams in Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance. This year was the first year we also sat Tap and Musical Theatre exams.

All the students did so well, with a very high amount of Honours passes and ten Distinction level passes.

Along with the exam awards, we also presented awards from our year of dance. The Overall Excellence in Dance Award for 2021 went to Alyssa Collings.

Alyssa has been dancing with us since the age of four. Alyssa takes part in our Elite programme, which sees her train in Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Tap, Musical Theatre and Contemporary dance. Alongside this, Alyssa is also part of our performance team and a student at Malvern Ballet as well. Alyssa sat six examinations this year, passing all with fabulous results.

An incredible amount of work goes into this and she completed it all with ease. Alyssa is a hardworking, dedicated student showing so much promise. She

has an awesome stage personality and is developing a mature style of dance. She always arrives with a positive attuite and a desire to learn more. We are very proud of Alyssa and how much she has achieved. We look forward to many more years dancing with her.

Also awarded was the Most Promising Dancer, won by Eden Whelan and Dancer of the Year, was won by Aali Williams.

All students are in their last week of dance this week and are looking forward to a welldeserved break! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone!

planning matters, these Lockdowns caused significant rental and business disruption.

The impacts of Covid-19 were particularly felt by, ‘nonessential’ business tenants, who were forced to close during the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 stage but remained subject to lease costs for their business premises.

On July 24th, 2021, the Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Act came into effect.

This legislation increased the minimum sick leave entitlement from five to ten days per year.

Unused sick leave at the end of a 12 month period can still be carried over and added to an employees entitlement for the following year, however, this is generally capped at twenty days.

Continuing with the theme of Covid-19, health and support for businesses, the Government distributed a further wage subsidy via a high trust model.

HO HO HO - MERRY CHRISTMAS It’s that time of year, when we look forward to spending time with family and friends, but also a time to reflect on the year that has passed.

What a year it has been! The uncertainty of Covid will be with us for many months to come, however, the real estate market has been on fire literally.

Over 25% increase in house prices in the year have put the Government and Reserve Bank into damage control. Pressure is coming from all quarters, and the banks are also tightening the strings. This tightening is merely slowing down the application times for borrowing but it seems to be having little bearing on prices.

Will the prices hold for 2022? We don’t think there will be price drops, but there will be little to no growth in prices. Utilising a strong marketing campaign with salespeople who run excellent buyer management will be the key to selling in 2022. It will not be your first buyer that yields the best result, it will remain the buyer attracted via your marketing and campaign.

The Scheme was reportedly the Governments largest single area of Covid-related spending, now running at an estimated $16 billion. On September 29th, 2021, the Ministry of Social Development filed separate criminal charges against two people in relation to multiple wage subsidy applications in the Auckland District Court. We understand that the Ministry is currently considering civil action in eight cases and has referred 1,061 cases for investigation.

On November 7th, 2021, assisted dying became legal in New Zealand. This is not a replacement for palliative care or health services, more generally, it provides another option for people with terminal illnesses in certain circumstances.

Finally, the New Zealand property market has been booming with reports that the National average property value

is now in excess of one million dollars.

This year the Government announced its plans to repeal the existing Resource Management Act 1991 and replace this with three new pieces of legislation.

SELWYN MP UPDATE It has been such a thrill to see my friend and class of 2020 colleague, Christopher Luxon, elected as the new leader of the National Party.

I know Chris to be a man of deep integrity, enormous intelligence, drive and discipline. He is also warm, engaging and kind. He is genuinely interested in people and has spent years thinking about the levers Government can pull to make real change to improve lives.

Like me, Chris was elected after one of the National Party’s worst results ever. It was a tough campaign, to say the least.

But his election, as well as that

of deputy leader, Nicola Willis, is our reset.

As he said in his first speech to the media on Tuesday, November 30th, we are drawing a line under the events of the last four years, and we are putting them behind us. Because we must. New Zealand needs a high functioning National Party.

The more time I spend in this job, meeting families and businesses across Selwyn, the more I see and hear how much people want the National Party to do well.

Nowadays, the technology available in cleaning gadgets actually makes this task quite simple. Magnetic glass cleaners allow you to scrub the inside clean, without even having to put your hand in the water. Just a few swipes once a week, while you watch them swim around and you’re done!

Gravel syphons make changing water and cleaning deep into gravel a breeze, you don’t even need to remove the fish. On average, it takes me around thirty minutes tops to give my 70 litre tank it’s weekly clean, with a slightly deeper one as needed.

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive part of tropical fish keeping is getting set up - the tank, heater, water pump, filtration system, gravel, decorations, water additives and cleaning gear.

Once you have everything where you want it (make sure the stand/table and placement in your home is capable of the weight) and have it filled with water, you need to leave it for a while. Many people don’t realise that you shouldn't add fish at this stage.

The next step is letting your tank go through what is called the ‘nitrogen cycle’. This ensures a safe and sustainable environment for your fish, to lower the chance of disease and unstable water parameters. This means letting beneficial bacteria grow in the water to keep nasties like ammonia and nitrites (which can harm fish) at bay, meaning a more stable ecosystem for them to thrive in.

On the evening of Wednesday, December 1st, Darfield St John Youth held their end of year prize giving, where they were excited to give out a large number of awards. “It has been a hard year for our Cadets with cancelled camps and competitions. They worked remotely for most of Term 3 and yet they have all achieved so much over this period. There were four very special awards presented on the night,” commented Divisional Manager for the Darfield Youth Division, Victoria Tomes.

Samantha Tomes was awarded her Super Penguin award. To gain this award, a Cadet needs to complete all nine penguin badges before their ninth birthday. Badges range from First Aid to Hobbies, to Caring.

Hunter Kennedy and Daisy Maude were awarded their Emerald awards. To achieve these, a Cadet needs to achieve six badges. Three compulsory and three optional badges, as

well as completing fifteen hours of community service.

Daisy Prosser took over the role of District Cadet of the Year. This will be for the Mid-Canterbury District and will take effect from the beginning of 2022. She will take over from Jenny Walter, who was the 2021 District Cadet of the Year for Mid-Canterbury, also formally from the Darfield Youth Division.

HELPING THE COMMUNITY On Friday, December 3rd, the Darfield Hotel Speights Mates Social Club presented four local charities with a donation. This year saw a change with the Social Club being run by members. They organised and ran raffles each week along with other fundraisers, which helped subside their trips throughout the year when Covid levels permitted, this also allowed

them to be able to give back to the community.

This year, the group had a hard time choosing which charities they would like to help, so they ended up donating to four charities chosen by their members. The lucky recipients were Darfield Fire Brigade, Darfield St John, Friends of Darfield Hospital and Darfield Food Bank.

The Social Club also donated three massive hampers of food to the Foodbank, along with vouchers for Johnny Fresh. The group enjoy being able to give back to the local community when they can.

With Christmas approaching quickly, the group are looking forward to their Christmas party before they wrap up for the year.

The Springfield Township Committee has been asking, local businesses and residents to get into the Christmas spirit by decorating their shop fronts, entranceways, houses, sections, fences, hedges or gardens.

People can then vote on their favourite display at Springfield Service Centre.

U3A MALVERN UPDATE For our final meeting for 2021, we enjoyed Christmas morning tea together before being privileged to hear Canterbury District Commissioner John Price speak about the New Zealand Police. John began with a brief history of policing in general. He looked back to 1829 in the United Kingdom during the industrial revolution when people were displaced from their villages to factories. The economy was booming, young men were paid, had money in their pockets which was often spent on alcohol which generated lawlessness and disorder. Queen Victoria called on the then Prime Minister Robert Peel to find a way to reduce the crime on the streets.

The Military was not an option as they suppress and use force to control the environment from outside issues. What was needed was an organisation that controlled by consent not force.

The Police were given a uniform from the opposite side of the colour wheel, blue (Military had red). Blue represents peace the opposite of force and uniforms helped provide visibility.

John said, “How many of you automatically ease off the speed when you sight a Police car.

There is a halo effect that lasts about fifteen minutes, therefore,

providing a deterrent to breaking the law.”In 1958, the word force was removed from the Police, they used their mouth rather than force.

They build confidence and trust in their service. 80% of people trust and have confidence in the Police.

This confidence rose to 96% after the March 15th terror attack.

One of the strengths of the New Zealand Police is that it is one unit, unlike the USA which has 18,000 Police services many of them recruited from the Military who were trained to kill, therefore using their firearms before using their mouths.

John stressed that the Police are a separate entity, the Government minister cannot direct the Police, it is independent from the

Two of the nine key principles of the New Zealand Police are: That the public are the Police and the Police are the public. Secondly, that we all have responsibility for the safety of our community.

John illustrated his talk with many examples of disasters and crime that he has been involved with and gave an insight into how the Police work and what may look like one issue to the public may have many tentacles that have to be dealt with at the same time.

CRAZY KEA EVENT On Sunday, December 5th, Darfield High School (DHS) had two teams competing in The Crazy Kea Challenge.

The Event is an adventure race starting from a mystery location in the Selwyn District. It is an exciting and challenging team sport, involving travelling on foot and by mountain bike to collect checkpoints marked on a map. There are 4, 8 and 12 hour options with both DHS teams competing in the 8-hour section.

We were offered a sponsor's team entry in August by Southern Approach, who in turn sponsored The Crazy Kea Challenge with Osprey. This was a great opportunity for our students to step outside their comfort zone and challenge themselves. As part of the sponsorship, we took advantage of hosting, at the beginning of Term 4, two-time winner of the Coast to Coast and top endurance athlete Dougal Allan.

This year the event was held locally starting in Glentunnel and finishing at the Glentunnel Domain. Our teams were made up of Year 10, 11 and 12 students (DHS Nuggets: Emily Morrison, Hamish Thornley, Camden Waters and DHS Adventurers: Isla McPherson,

Maria College student, Addison Youngman-Mark (aged 11) recently attended the Young Inspiring Explorers Worsley weekend which was held in Wainui. Over a hundred children applied to attend the camp that was run by Antarctic Heritage Trust, but only twenty were chosen. Children from all over the Canterbury region including Kaikoura and Glenavy attended.

Those that attended the camp got to participate in many activities including, high ropes, bushwalk, orienteering, raft building, visited the Akaroa Museum, meeting Wendy Dunlop the author of ‘The Boy from Akaroa’ and visited the home where Frank Worsley grew up.

The Young Inspiring Explorers programme encourages and empowers young, modern-day explorers to meet the challenges of life head-on by connecting them with the inspiring feats of early Antarctic exploration. The programme celebrates Antarctic explorer and Kiwi hero, Frank Worsley who captained Shackleton’s Endurance. He undertook ‘the greatest small boat journey of all time’ and one of the greatest ever feats of navigation aboard the James Caird from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island to help save the crew of Endurance.

“After reading about the Young Inspiring Explorers Worsley weekend in my school newsletter and researching it further, I knew straight away this

opportunity for me because I love the outdoors and I like to meet new people,” Addison commented.

“The four weeks leading up to the camp I was set homework that involved reading a book about Frank Worsley’s life as an explorer, ‘The Boy from Akaroa’.

“I really enjoyed reading about his fascinating trip down to the Antarctic with Shackleton. I knew nothing about Frank and thanks to the Antarctic Heritage Trust I now think we should all learn about him at school because he was not only one of New Zealand’s greatest explorers, he was a hero.

“Greenstone Productions were also at the camp filming for a documentary about Young Explorers that will be aired on TV2 in the middle of next year. I was lucky enough to be one of four selected to be the main feature of their filming. I got to attend an extra two days of camp so the film crew could complete more in-depth filming. During those two days, I had more interviews with the film crew, learnt to sail the Fox 2 in Lyttelton Harbour, as well as a morning of paddle boarding.

“I thoroughly enjoyed meeting lots of new kids and our guides from the Antarctic Heritage Trust. I loved being part of the filming and I can’t wait to watch it next year,” Addison concluded.

SPCA CHRISTMAS WISH LIST Kelsea Nelson-Cummins, originally from Hororata and a well-known actress in Kirwee Players and Rolleston Centre Stage productions works for the SPCA in a Fundraiser/Community and Giving Support role.

She is often seen on TV giving updates on the SPCA. The News contacted her to see how people could help the animals this year.

Christmas is a busy time for most people and businesses, and it’s no different for the SPCA. They have an important role to play in the local community, and their operation would not be possible without your support. Together this Christmas, we can help the animals that so desperately need it!

Did you know that the SPCA receives just 5% Government funding? So much of what they do depends on the generosity of people in the community. It is only possible to help the tens of thousands of animals who come through the doors at the SPCA each year because of generous people like you.

At the local SPCA Christchurch Centre, there are a few items they are in particular need of this Christmas. Their dogs are in desperate need of food enrichment items like kongs, food mats, etc. – things to keep the dogs’ minds occupied. Also, with the weather getting noticeably hotter, old plastic shell pools are always welcome

If anyone is stuck for transport talk to the Malvern Community Vehicle Trust, who are based in Darfield.

They provide low-cost transport for the rural community where there is no public transport, allowing people to stay here within their existing networks.

Don’t have a car? Don’t have your licence? Can’t drive temporarily due to injury? Talk to them, they can help.

Their fees are low because they only charge running costs. All their drivers are volunteers, who are happy to serve their community in this way. They are all police vetted and medically fit to drive.

Malvern Community Trust have three cars and a 9-seater van to cater for all needs. They can do more than just take you to a doctor’s appointment or hospital appointments.

Fancy a trip to town for coffee and a movie with all your friends?

Do you want to take a group to the museum or a sightseeing trip somewhere?

This group can also pick you up for Day Club. Their van can take your family plus luggage to the airport. It is also available for hire.

They take people shopping fortnightly on Tuesdays in pension pay weeks, to one of the malls in the city between 9.30am and 2.30 pm. Thinking about Christmas shopping? Why not take some friends and have a day in town.

Darfield Foodbank was extremely grateful to receive some fantastic donations recently.

Kirwee Model School collected items at school for the Foodbank, which even included freshly grown caulis.
