On November 13th and 14th, the Malvern Rifle Club hosted the Canterbury Rifle Association’s Canterbury Spring Championship. The forecasted wet weather and Covid may have reduced the number’s attending but did not diminish the quality of competitors or competition. Shooters had travelled from Southland and the Wairarapa to compete. On day one shooters stood with caps off the acknowledge the late Gavin King who had been a member of the Malvern Rifle Club. The rain arrived midway through the shooting at 300 yards getting more and more intense. A decision was made to move straight to the 900 yard shooting position where shelter could be erected to provide cover for the shooters for health and safety reasons. The rain eased for the final round of shooting at 900 yards but was replaced by a tricky wind that varied in strength, angle and direction. At the end of the first day’s competition, Malvern’s Allan White had not dropped a point shooting an outstanding 200/200 with 26 centres in Target Rifle A grade, leading Andre du Toit (Malvern) and Martin Fleming (Ashburton), both on 195 with 20 centres. On day two the weather was overcast at the start and the decision was made to shoot all three ranges at 600 yards. After the first two rounds of shooting the three tops scorers in TR A-Grade, FTR and F-Open were identified. In their respective grades, these shooters would shoot at the same time, shoulder to shoulder to determine the Champions The Class Champions. F-Open Champion Mike Chui (Ashburton and Districts Rifle Club, Target Rifle Champion Allan White (Malvern Rifle Club) and FTR Champion Mark Alexander (Malvern Rifle Club).

Last weekend’s shooting was a test day, with shooting at 300 and 600 yards. It was an overcast day. The wind proved to be a problem for some shooters, more than others. Some scores weren’t recorded as shooters may have been testing and not shooting for scores. Visitors Glenn, Bruce, Craig and Damon were welcomed to the range. Damon shot with a club rifle; our other visitors used their own rifles. Notable scores: Next shoot is on Saturday, November 27th with 10 counting shots at 500 and 600 yards.
Visitors are welcome to the range, contact details can be found on the Malvern Rifle Club Facebook page: Malvern Rifle Association.
