Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton and co-rider Sean Tully completed a marathon cycle across Selwyn in support of a men’s health charity last weekend (11th - 13th November). The ride started in the mountains at Arthurs Pass and finished at Taumutu, a total of 200km and more than ten hours in the saddle over three days.

Movember is an international awareness and fundraising campaign that supports men’s health issues including mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Sam and Sean are a part of a Selwyn District Council team who are both fundraising in different ways for the same Movember cause.

“Life can throw a curveball when you least expect it, leaving us worried or overwhelmed, looking out for each other, and having the courage to reach out for help or being brave and asking somebody if they are okay can literally save a life,” commented Sam “We men are also not always great at going to get embarrassing lumps or bumps checked out or knowing what red flags should send us to speak with our health experts,” Sam continued.

HOMESTEAD & GARDEN OPEN DAY On November 21st Racecourse Hill homestead and gardens will be open to the public. The lovely chapel will also be open to enjoy, along with the stately grounds of which people can walk around and enjoy the gardens and flowers.

This time the beautifully restored homestead is also open for viewing. In 2010 the Canterbury Earthquake left the building poised for demolition, however unlike so many, it was saved, and the current owner Denver Glass welcomes people into view this fabulous building.

Entry to the grounds and chapel alone is $10 per person and a further $10 per person is required for the homestead tour.

THE MOTHER OF ALL PROTESTS Groundswell NZ’s protest this Sunday, November 21st, is once again a timed nationwide midday demonstration to the Government, which will bring town and country together in ‘The Mother of all Protests’.

A rolling convoy of vehicles, utes and machinery plan to leave Sheffield at 12noon, heading to Christchurch via SH73. Protesters from Darfield, Kirwee, West Melton, Yaldhurst and anyone inbetween are welcome to join in as they head for the Russley Rd/ Memorial Avenue intersection, arriving at 1:30pm.

Simultaneously the same will be happening from Rangiora, Leeston and Rolleston areas.

While other coordinators decided to hold smaller rural town protests, as we did in July, it was decided that a rolling convoy to Christchurch via Darfield and surrounds would take our message to the city. Rural folk already understand the issues and busy seasonal work may also tie up some of our numbers on the day.

To avoid crowd gatherings and Covid restrictions, people can instead banner-up their vehicle appropriately, pack a picnic lunch on wheels and make an

afternoon of it. Because of the risk of contact, we ask that everyone stays in their vehicle until we reach our destination at Memorial Ave (1:35pm). Your signage and banners will not go unnoticed through the city.

While congestion may be inevitable during the driving convoy, we also ask you to keep emergency lanes clear at all times for any responding vehicles.

We are well aware of numerous protests happening for various reasons lately, and while Groundswell remains committed to advocating for farmers and rural communities, Labour’s Three Water Reforms and lack of consultation with Council’s nationwide has become an issue involving every ratepayer.

“Labour seems to think every idea they have is so good they make it mandatory.”

The assets accumulatively funded by generations of local ratepayers (some with voluntary labour, as occurred with original stock water systems) will be effectively stolen from Councils, handed over to yet another entity of ticket-clippers, maintained by the same locals with new levels of middle-

management. The water won’t change, but job creation will ensure your bank account will, and so will the Councils.

“We expect the Selwyn District Council to continue to stand against this takeover on our behalf, as are 61 of the 67 Councils throughout the country.”

Groundswell will broadcast nationwide on Newstalk ZB (100.1FM) at 1:35pm, then effectively, the Protest finishes.

Thereafter, we encourage you to support local businesses, have some lunch and do some Christmas shopping etc.

After much discussion and deliberation, the Hororata Historical Society (HHS) has decided that they are unable to open Coton’s Cottage and the Hororata Museum for the 2021/22 season. Unfortunately, the beautiful Rimu floor is a favourite on the menu of the borer beetle.

While cataloguing the collection, one of our wonderful volunteers discovered the damage by putting her foot through the floor. She was unhurt, however, the incident has led to further investigation and the discovery of considerable deterioration in several places.

Considering this, the HHS committee has decided that, to

comply with health and safety regulations, they cannot open the museum until the repairs to the floor are completed.

We will continue to work on cataloguing, photographing and storing the collection, as well as recording collection items on the web-based cataloguing system, eHive. This means the collection information is accessible to other eHive members, and it is a fantastic way to ensure the collection is recorded for the future.

The next step is to fundraise for fumigation and repairs. HHS are applying for grants to get this underway as soon as possible.

Builders have inspected the Museum to assess the full extent

of the damage.

The Society would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who support the museum and also thank the fantastic small group of volunteers who work tirelessly when the Museum is open and to ensure the collection is preserved.

Rest assured, the HHS is planning to reopen as soon as possible, and look forward to seeing everyone again at our Hororata Walking Trail events, Hororata High Teas, Heritage Weekends and visits to the museum.

TAKING ON NEW CHALLENGES Recently the Royal A&P Society (RAS) has seen some changes among its Executive members.

This has allowed them to see if people ‘at the table’ are doing the things that interest them and they have the right skills for the job. During their discussions around this, it became clear that local Melissa Jebson had three areas of passion – sheep and cattle (noting she and her husband have a sheep stud at Charing Cross and have not long dispersed their Shorthorn and Charolais cattle studs), and equestrian. Melissa was keen to continue with the Tri-Nations

Equestrian Youth team and also has an interest in being the National Equestrian Judge’s Convenor (a position that has been vacant for some time). On that basis, she has taken over as the Golden Fleece Working Group Chair and the Executive temporarily offered her the role of National Equestrian Judges’ Convenor. She will hold the latter position until June 2022, at which time she or anyone else interested that may have put themselves up for election for the position, can be voted on by the members for the next threeyear term.

Melissa is a well-known face to many members up and down the country and a conference regular. She rode successfully for many years showing ponies and horses, and in Round the Ring Hunter jumping classes. A car accident in 1993 finished her riding career and led her into judging. She holds RAS Grade 1, Tutor Judge status and has judged throughout New Zealand including the New Zealand Horse of The Year, and the United Kingdom. She was also joint Manager of the Tri-Nations Youth Equestrian team in New Zealand in 2017 and the United Kingdom in 2019.

Melissa said, “Having been an active member of the Central District Tutor Judge’s group for many years, I am passionate about judging and encouraging Judges in their role. I feel that I offer guidance and support to our current and candidate Judges, and advocate when necessary on their behalf. Our District Judge Convenors need support and encouragement as they bring on new Judges and support upgrading Judges.”

“I am approachable, have strong knowledge of the role of the Equestrian Judge and the functions of the RAS. Having sat on the Darfield High School Board of Trustees for nine years, I feel I have the ability, to be honest, and fair in all decisions. I look forward to working alongside all our Equestrian Judges across New Zealand,” Melissa concluded.

The MenzShed is open weekly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and members can make or repair

Glentunnel School Show Day was held on Wednesday, November 10th, with a theme of ‘Wai-Water’. The students rolled up their sleeves and took the theme to a new level through multiple media forms including, Decorative Rock Art, Floating Floral Art, Miniature Scene, handwriting sample and some completing a Pet Project.

The judges were very impressed with the quality of items, as well as the epic handwriting samples from each of the classes.

The Auction which included cakes, upcycle items, and vouchers from Glentunnel Schools generous parents, local business and organisations have been amazing and innovative. “Thank you so much for your sacrifice in creating, making, or donating items, ensuring that we start strong in our fundraising efforts towards the development of a new Community Bike Track,”

commented Glentunnel School Principal, Ed Trotter.

“Hazlett Limited were our auctioneers on the day and did an awesome job getting high bids from the audience. The official figure raised was $3,745, which is incredible,” Ed added.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make this day a huge success. The students have enjoyed this time of creativity, normalisation and having some fun. I am indebted to you all and thank you again for making last week something special,” Ed concluded.

WINDWHISTLE SCHOOL PET DAY Windwhistle School (Te Uru Miro) held their Pet Day on Wednesday, November 10th. We were blessed with fantastic weather, amazing children, well behaved pets, and a supportive parent community.

Highlights this year were the addition of puppies in the dog section, a sheep shearing

demonstration, the variety of animals on display, the new categories of Art and Photography (replacing decorated cupcakes and pikelets due to Covid) and of course the traditional Grand Parade. Due to Covid we sadly could not have our regular judges so our board members and parents stepped in.

They did a fantastic job, and everyone looked to have heaps of fun! Special thanks to the ladies who ran the barbeque and to our junior teacher Mrs Mac who puts in a lot of work in the background to ensure the day ran smoothly.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB November’s shoot at Darfield Gun Club was not a very good day for shooting, it was quite miserable with a strong, gusty nor-east, with very dull light due to cloudy conditions, which made the targets extremely hard to see. Just a small number of shooters attended and due to the light and wind, scores were lower than average especially for the lower grades.

The day started with a 25 target Eye-opener and going by the lack of possibles most eyes were at least partly shut. A couple of 24’s leading the way, but not overly convincing in execution with plenty of second shots required.

The first championship of the day was for the 18 metre Triples Perrin Cup. The top scorers were Dave Folley (A grade) and Tony

Stuart (B grade) both with 47/50. Marcel Van Leeuwen (C grade) close behind with 46.

After the shoot-off Dave was the worthy winner of the Perrin Cup for 2021.

Next up was the Continental Cup and finally some ‘Red’ on the scoreboard. Selwyn Everett had to shoot-off with Brodie Mangels after both scored possible 20’s. Selwyn prevailed to take out the A grade and win the trophy. Tony Stuart and Brian Johnson had a small battle in the B grade shoot-off, both scoring 19’s, Tony eventually won. In the C grade, Scott Bailey’s score of 18/20 was 4 ahead of the other C grade shooters, a very good result for him.

After receiving multiple phone calls regarding area of Department of Conservation (DOC) land in Darfield, the ‘News contacted DOC directly.

To the Editor, DOC is aware of a fence that has been erected in a public conservation land reserve on Wards Road.

A member of the community has been doing a range of conservation work in the reserve, including predator and weed control, native planting, and rubbish removal. DOC supports this work, which is aiding the native biodiversity and enhancing the visitor experience.

There have been concerns about dirt bikes damaging the tracks in the reserve and rubbish being dumped there. The individual who has been doing the conservation work in the reserve erected a fence out of frustration at the damage dirt bikes have been causing.

DOC has asked the individual to cease any further fencing until a community agreement with DOC is in place.

We encourage appropriate public access to and enjoyment of the reserve.

To the Editor, Revive Our River: Ko Waikirikiri te awa.

Nothing would stop our daughter from enjoying the Selwyn River, until the day I told her she needed to stop putting her head under.

Generations of our families have been drawn to the water but it’s not the same now. Our parents fished for trout and we fished for cockabullies' and tadpoles. We learnt water safety paddling in the shallows, but one day the slime and algae had taken over and we never fished or paddled again.

To quote our daughter, “There were worrying signs that people were not looking after our beautiful River. We were extra careful not to swallow and eventually we were not allowed to put our ears under. We started seeing mats of brown sludge in the water and covering the rocks.

Now we rarely go down to the water.”

Our daughter continues, “None of my children have ever swum in the River, we barely let them go near it. If we do go near, we go to throw stones and the whole time I worry about the splashes. My warning to the children is that if they fall in they must not swallow the water which does not even halfway

express my fear of them falling in and getting the water on their skin, in their ears, and their eyes.”

Our neighbour writes, “It has saddened us immensely to see the deterioration of this once beautiful River. We are so disappointed that we can’t now share with our granddaughter those wonderful opportunities that we had. Fifteen minutes in a small plastic pool doesn’t begin to compare with an afternoon of fun and laughter on the banks of a real, clean, swimmable river.”

So now we want the River to be healthy again. Let’s form a River Care Action Group and find ways to work together for the health of our river.
