On Sunday, October 24th, local Bridget Carter set off on her 100km fundraising run, to help support her nephew Shanan Nicholl and his family. Shanan was in a car accident that sadly took the life of his older brother and best friend, and has now been in hospital for over thirty five days.

“The day was full of emotion, heart, strength and determination,” Bridget said.

“I was not alone at all on the entire 100km run thanks to my beautiful friends, community and my amazing family.

“I started my run in my hometown, Darfield, running 16km before heading to Christchurch, where I was joined by some wonderful friends.

“My son Cameron and family friend Anna Hurst biked the entire way to Christchurch Hospital (62km) with me, they also ran some of Hagley Park.

“My awesome husband Jack ran 24km with me in the Park and our youngest son Nathan also joined us.

“To achieve something so massive was only possible with the support of the amazing Dylan Gray and his beautiful wife Genna and family, who followed me the entire way in the support vehicle, keeping me safe on the road, hydrated, fed, full of motivational encouragement and music,”

“Last but certainly not least, my amazing family. So many of my family members were there with me, through sending live Facebook messages of encouragement, from West Melton in vehicles to running alongside me from Yaldhurst, as well as various other parts of the run.

“It is because of their love and support I got through the run to help support my nephew.

“Shanan's recovery is going to be a very long one and he is going to need his family's support, through being strong and fighting for him, which is something all his family and close friends are focusing on right now. At the time of going to print Shanan was awake from his coma and talking, which is fantastic news.

“Shanan's beautiful partner Paula also needs a tower of strength and support around her,

as she has their young children to take care of as well as Shanan and most importantly herself.

“Once again thanks to all the amazing people that have been part of the journey supporting Shanan and Paula. Our family are so grateful for your donations and the love and support we have received.

“We raised a total of $4,600 from the run, which will help support the Nicholl family,” Bridget concluded.

LASHES AND BITS Lashes and Bits owner, Dani Powell has been operating for nearly a year and has recently moved into a bigger, standalone space, nestled amongst the hills just off the main road of Whitecliffs. This new space has allowed her to commit to her business full time after she began operating last December on a casual basis.

Dani has a career background in aviation, but after having her second child in 2018, decided she wanted to work for herself doing something that she loved. She trained in person with Lady Lash in Christchurch and has also completed training with internationally recognised designer brows trainer Raquel Barros, in Brazil.

Now a fully qualified lash/brow artist, she offers customised services to suit each person's natural eyelashes/eyebrows, as well as their desired look.

“I do eyelash extensions, lash lifts, brow makeovers, tinting,

lamination and hybrid gel dye (similar to henna),” Dani explained.

“I allocate plenty of time for my appointments so the work I do is gentle and unrushed, creating a calming experience. The space is super cosy and relaxing with fairy lights, aromatherapy and a

variety of beautiful plants, creating a fantastic atmosphere,” Dani concluded.

ST JOHN SAYS THANK YOU Many of you will have seen the article in last week’s ‘News’ about the Darfield ITM Fishing Competition and read about this great, annual event. Held for fourteen years at Lake Benmore, this has always been well supported by locals as well as other hopeful fishermen. Always a good story, a record fish caught, and a proportion of the entry fee donated to a charity or organisation within the community.

This year St John in Selwyn was the very grateful recipient of these funds. With the three area committees of St John in this area now merged, we have a new entity that covers the whole of the Selwyn District Council political boundary. The proceeds

from the Competition will stay within the Selwyn area, to the benefit of a range of smaller communities within, as well as support the ongoing capability of the local St John teams, to better train and provide Ambulance services, provide cover at events, support youth development and so on. With a recent series covering AED locations and use, we also identified a few gaps in the network where there may be AEDs, but not always available 24/7. St John will potentially use some of these funds to plug those gaps.

So a big shout out to Darfield ITM, the fishing competitors and supporting sponsors, for recognising the value of supporting local organisations to do their work in the community.

Covid-19 comes South.

With the recent Covid cases in Canterbury and Marlborough, we were all made acutely aware of how tenuous our boundaries are.

We have been lucky to have lived at a more relaxed alert level for some time.

A recent television interview

highlighted vaccinations to me, the guest said we will all be vaccinated in twelve months.

A sweeping statement until explained. Most will choose to receive their two jabs of protein to combat the virus, but those that choose not to, will almost certainly be infected by the Covid Delta Virus in the next twelve months and because of non-vaccinating, run the risk of becoming more unwell, requiring higher levels of care and maybe more dire consequences.

A visit to the Emergency Department last week, was a real eye-opener to the processes that are now required for all emergency admissions, because of the new heightened risk of Covid Delta within the community. St John also has an increased workload because of precautions required in prehospital treatment of patients.

Remember to respect social distancing, gatherings, contact tracing tools, and personal hygiene to protect our communities.

KAWAII KIWI - CUTE KIWI Springfield based business, Kawaii Kiwi, is due to celebrate its first birthday after opening in Show Weekend last year. The name Kawaii Kiwi comes from owner Emma Stead’s love of Japan and New Zealand. Kawaii (pronounced: kuh-wai-ee) means ‘cute’ in Japanese so, ‘Cute Kiwi’, Emma thinks is a pretty appropriate name for her range of products.

The business started with Emma’s Origami Dress Bunting, moving onto wall art and more recently the ‘Bubble and Sweet’ soap and chocolate range, which Emma has created with her children Zoe (8) and Oscar (6).

Emma and her family moved from Christchurch to Springfield just over three years ago, in time for her daughter to start school.

She wanted her children to grow up in a more rural setting away from the busy-ness and pressures of the city, as well as to be closer to Craigieburn Ski Field.

“I studied Japanese for five years and I love anything Japanese related; the language, food, people and culture. Origami has always been relaxing for me and so this features in the bunting, as well as in some of my frames,” Emma explained.

“I stock the Origami Dress Bunting in different patterns, which are often based on the seasons or significant holidays. I use origami paper that you can just buy off the shelf, or print off designs that suit the occasion.

“The wall art is mostly scrabble

art and covers a broad range, including Father’s and Mother’s Day, kitchen, dreamy/feel good and humorous.

“My favourite though, are the bespoke frames created and 100% customised to what the client wants, either for a family celebration, special birthday, new baby, wedding, anniversary, etc.

“My new collection, ‘Bubble and Sweet’ soaps gives a bit of attitude and fun to soaps, including the Springfield donut, coffee beans, gingerbread men, christmas trees, all with fragrances that make many of them smell good enough to eat,” Emma continued.

“My ideas usually come to me when I’m out in the garden, on a bike ride, or driving when my mind can wander and get creative. Most ideas are 100% my own, although some are borrowed and tweaked to suit the situation. It takes a while for an idea to come to fruition while I work out the concept and then make it happen.

“My creating time at my craft table is my ‘me-time’. I get to relax, imagine, create and craft something that I know is going to make someone smile and brighten up a space in some way.

“The products I make all differ in the time they take to construct.

If I am making a bespoke, customised piece for someone, it takes me a while. I am a bit of a perfectionist and so I create a mock-up and then let it sit somewhere I can walk past, have a look and give a wee tweak, this can take an hour or a couple of days,” concluded Emma.

Aside from her crafting, she is currently studying Landscape Design. She loves to ski and bike (mountain and road) and is currently getting back into yoga and propagating native plants.

Emma also assists her husband (Scott Walker) in their other business, T5 Contracting, which is a creative excavator solutions business.

We love this time of year, lambing and calving are done and crops are growing, the weather is warming up and with the hotter temperatures comes our most common ‘false alarm’ car fault. We start to receive panicked calls from customers saying that they have water leaking from the engine after the car has been driven. They say it's a clear fluid and it evaporates after a day leaving behind a slight stain. Don't panic, nine times out of ten it's easily explained and nothing to worry about.

The air conditioning (A/C) system works the same as your fridge, or the A/C in the work office or at home. It uses a compressor, which is driven by a motor, that

compresses gas to liquid form.

This creates a lot of heat and the liquid is pumped through a cooler unit and then to an evaporator, where it is converted back to a gas. It's the reduction of pressure inside the evaporator that creates the cooling effect.

This also absorbs moisture from the atmosphere that forms condensation, which is drained from the vehicle through the foot compartment and drips on the ground. It's just the same moisture as you get on the windows of your house during cooler days. When condensation drips onto the floor of your garage, it mixes with the dirt and can often look like an oily substance. The position of the condensation leak is also a giveaway as it's nearly always directly underneath, between the feet of the driver and front passenger.

The clear difference between a radiator coolant leak and the A/C condensation leak, is the radiator coolant will be slightly coloured red, yellow, green or blue and does not evaporate very quickly.

But, if you are in any doubt at all, please ring and get it checked to prevent an avoidable breakdown.

The other fault we hear about this time of year is “my A/C isn't working very well”. The first thing we check is the cabin filter, to make sure it's not blocked.

Nesting rats are our favourite thing to find inside the vehicle's heater blower fan, really common if you live near a creek or a farm. Cabin filters also stop dust and pollen from entering the cabin space of the vehicle.

MORE THAN JUST A RIDE Local business, Alpine Jet Thrills is more than just a ride, it’s a true experience. In response to Covid-19 in March 2020, after coming out from Lockdown and realising the world was going to be very different, owners Paul Mullan and Paul Vernel made the fundamental decision to press on without cruise ship passengers, which had been integral to their business.

Their business focus was on surviving in a climate not conducive to international tourism, by leaning toward areas such as corporate and educational. In addition, one of the directors had been building an air boat with the prospect of introducing it to the commercial market. This has been well received and an important part of turning to a local market, which is generally more ambivalent about a jet boat ride in the ‘home of jet boating’. Most people have not been on an air boat and certainly not on the Waimakariri River.

The sensation is different to jet boating, akin to skimming over

wet stones rather than the 100mm of water expected for a jet boat. New Zealand’s first and only airboat was passed for service by Maritime New Zealand, last October.

Based at both ends of the Waimakariri River, the two Paul’s and their wives Robyn and Lynda continued with plans to display some of the world’s oldest jet boats and develop a concept that Alpine Jet Thrills was more than just a ride.

Thus, Springfield Adventure Park was born and with it Jet Boat World, which is New Zealand’s only dedicated jet boat heritage display located right opposite the beach, where much of the development happened back in the late 50s and 60s.

Trustees Paul Mullan, Paul Vernel and Ed Wicken said, “Jet Boat World Trust was established to protect the history of jet boating, its historic artifacts and promote an educational forum to better understand the contribution New Zealand has made to jet propulsion globally. Without

major funding to date, Jet Boat World has primarily been for the pleasure of local jet boaters, corporate clients and others who pass through Hamish Faulkner’s farm which is run by his son Locky and himself.”

On Saturday, November 6th, there is an Open Day being held.

This is not an official opening as Jet Boat World is a work in progress, but it’s a chance for the Selwyn community to see what’s happening locally.

There will be boats on display as well as several winning race boats from the recent ITM NZ Jet Boat Marathon, including John Derry’s helicopter gas turbine engine powered machine, capable of more than 235kph. So head along and for a great day out, which will include some special deals on offer.

get you and your mates home safely. If an adult appears in court for drink driving, the minimum penalty is six months disqualification and a financial fine. Having to get around on Shanks’ Pony or the Buller Express (walking) for six months will be a huge disruption to one’s work, social life, general lifestyle and will no doubt have huge financial implications. Selwyn Police will continue to target drunk drivers to lower our road toll and keep other road users and our communities safe.

Failing to stop at stop-controlled intersections, continues to be the cause of a high percentage of vehicle crashes in Canterbury each year. Police would like to remind motorists to come to a complete stop at stop-controlled intersections, then look left and right and only proceed if the path ahead is clear.

Cell phone use by drivers on our roads is way too common and is a major distraction to the driver of that particular vehicle, putting other road motorists in danger as a consequence. The best advice is to pull over/stop at a safe location off the road and then use your cell phone. Again, Selwyn Police will be targeting drivers of vehicles not stopping at stop-controlled intersections and drivers using a cell phone.

Darfield Police, as previously recommended, again advise our community to make an inventory of all your valuable possessions and tools. A great way to do this is to take a photo of each item along with the serial number and have a folder on your computer and storage device, which keeps all these details. If you are

unfortunate in being the victim of a burglary, this inventory will be invaluable.

Trailers seem to be a hot target for thieves in Canterbury at the moment. Police recommend that you also keep a record of your trailer serial number and consider welding another identifiable and recorded feature on your trailer in a discreet location. Keep your trailer locked up and secured in your garage overnight, if not possible have it chained and padlocked to a solid and secure location within your section and your front gate shut and locked, not left unsecured on the grass verge outside your property.

Building sites across Canterbury are frequently targeted by thieves overnight and again Police advise builders and tradesmen to keep their tools and materials locked away securely when not using them on site. Security cameras and site burglar alarms are a great deterrent too.

On the morning news on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, it was reported that there were two positive cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in the Christchurch area. This is a good opportunity to again advise our community to get vaccinated, practise social distancing, wear face masks when out in the community, make good use of hand sanitiser when visiting shops and businesses and always scan in on the Covid Tracing App. Andy, Hamish, Blair and Scott (currently working/ relieving at Darfield).

TIME FOR SOMETHING NEW It saddens me to write that this will be my final week as part of the Malvern News family. I started working for Jan Thomas and Jan Crossley in 2015, after graduating Darfield High School the year prior. Having been here for six and a half years now (nearly a third of my life time), I felt it was time to take advantage of an opportunity that I was presented with, to work from my beautiful home in Hororata.

I have formed some amazing relationships, met some fantastic people and helped serve one of the greatest communities in our district. I feel so lucky to have gained the breadth of skills and experience I have whilst working here, which will really help me in my next venture.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jan Thomas for everything! She has been more than a boss and a colleague to me, she is more like a third mother and we have a relationship that I will cherish for life. I am so sorry that I ‘quit my day job’, something Jan T made very clear that I was never allowed to do, which a lot of you will know (all in good fun of course!). Nevertheless, she has continued to be nothing but

supportive and I cannot thank her enough for everything she has taught me, supported me with and helped me with over the years. I wish you all the best for the future, you can bet I will be back to annoy you as often as humanly possible!

My lovely colleague Lucinda Jarvis who has become one of my closest friends. I want to thank her for being a great team mate, she is an absolute pleasure to work with and gosh do the three of us have some laughs. I hope you continue try new things without me - we discovered she hates olives and feijoas! All the best for your future at the News, I am sure we will continue to see each other on a personal level.

Our gorgeous wee helper (miss personality plus) Abbi Moore, there has never been a dull moment with this bright little spark in the office. I so appreciate the help she has given me, as well as the many laughs. I cannot wait to hear how you grow over the next few years!

I would also really like to thank Jan Crossley and Lois Haskett, who were both part of our team for majority of my time here.

Jan C was also my boss-mum

until October last year. She supported and taught me a wealth of skills that I feel lucky to have. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her, we both have a very similar sense of humour, share a love of decent pens and all things that are grammatically correct.

I always very much look forward to my weekly catch ups with Lois and will miss chatting with you regularly, I very much hope we bump into each other in the future.

THREE WATERS REFORMS Will they stop at nothing?

This command - and - control, centralise - at - all - costs, democracy - be - damned Labour Government has shown the middle finger to we the ratepayers, and has finally fessed up to what we all knew was coming, it is taking ownership of our water.

Nania Mahuta has finally shown her hand after months of ducking and diving behind faux ‘consultation’ with councils and announced they will be mandating their Three Waters Reforms, by introducing a bill to Parliament that will force Councils to hand control of their water assets to four mega water entities.

That means we here in Canterbury will be sucked into Entity D. The delivery of the drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services (that you own) will be removed from

the Councils (that you elected) and handed to a Government-controlled, South Island-wide entity. Those services will be controlled by multiple layers of bureaucrats and appointed governors in these megaentities, with no accountability to us. Whether you are in Selwyn, Christchurch, Ashburton, McKenzie or Waimakariri district, your water bill will end up cross subsiding your neighbours.

This is obviously a move that my National colleagues and I will be vehemently opposing. We believe it is an unworkable, fundamentally flawed, and one - size - fits - all answer that has been pursued without adequate consideration of alternatives or proper consultation.

But whether you support the entity model or not, the Government’s

decision to force it on your Council, remove your right to make an independent decision, and acquire and centralise your ratepayer-owned assets by legislation is outrageous.

We maintain that there hasn’t been sufficient time or information to digest the detail and consult communities.

SDC DISAPPOINTED Selwyn District Council (SDC) is extremely disappointed that the Government has made the decision to force Councils to become part of their new Three Waters reform entities.

At the SDC meeting on Wednesday, October 27th, soon after the announcement, a motion was passed to express its extreme disappointment at the decision to remove the opt-out option.

“SDC entered into the reform process after the Government committed to giving Councils a choice about opting in or out of any proposed new entity,” Mayor Sam Broughton said.

Sam previously led South Island Mayors in calling for a pause in the water reforms to allow a partnership approach and alignment with other major reforms, as well as to allow communities to have their say.

Groundswell NZ’s ‘Mother of all Protests’ will go ahead on Sunday, November 21st, even if there are still Covid-19 restrictions in some parts of the country. The protest follows the ‘Howl of a Protest’, which took place in July 2021, when an estimated 60,000 people turned out to protest against Government regulations.

Groundswell NZ leader, Bryce McKenzie said, “the group had met online recently and decided to go ahead with the nationwide protest against some Government regulations, which the group said are unworkable for farmers but are not only specific to the rural community.”

“We’re going ahead, we’ve had an overwhelming response from our coordinators up and down the country. All we ask is that people stick to the rules, and stick to their own vehicles and bubbles. If everyone does what they’re

Those taking part will turn up the volume of the radio, turn off their engines, open the windows and unite together, although socially distanced, in protest. The plan isn’t to gridlock New Zealand, although in some places it would probably be inevitable.

“Stand against the unworkable regulations that impact you and your family New Zealand, it’s time to unite and force the Government to take notice and acknowledge the Groundswell,” Bryce added.

“Join in and help us build momentum towards the ‘Groundswell Gathering’ that will take place February 2022, at Parliament,” Bryce concluded.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET A late change of venue meant Darfield would host a re-run of last season's final against Sefton, although this time it was 8 competition points on the line and not the Wright-Fulton Cup. Nick Gilbert took over opening responsibilities as Liam Foulkes shuffled down the order, but it did little to reverse Darfield's habit of having an opener back in the shed for a single digit score, as Zak Foulkes was out early. Gilbert was watchful thereafter, as he and Jesse Frew played patiently to slowly tick over the score. Frew fell and was replaced by Ryan Hughes who did his best to maintain momentum, but runs and especially boundaries were rare.

Just as Gilbert looked settled, he lobbed a catch to mid-wicket bringing two fresh batters to the middle - Tom Dempster and Ben Innes. Innes soaked up a few balls, but it was Dempster who looked the most established.

When Nick Jenkins eventually joined Dempster, the run rate increased as Sefton's understrength bowling attack served up some dessert and both batters licked their lips.

Wickets continued to fall as more boundaries were sought, but each batter thereafter made double figures at a run per ball, to post a very healthy 214 as Darfield were dismissed in the final over of the innings.

The second innings was a demolition job. Zak Foulkes snared a wicket in the first over to set the tone for what came next. A steady stream of Sefton

batters made the walk to the middle, faced up to a few balls, then turned around and walked back as Darfield's bowlers hit near perfect lines and length.

The fielders backed up the hard work by snatching every chance that was offered. Zak Foulkes bowled arguably the fasted he has all season (with the assistance of a tailwind) and had several batters backing away from their stumps, only for Foulkes to bluff them by bowling full and straight to knock over the wickets. Will Greenslade picked up 3 wickets for himself as Sefton were bundled out for 89, with Amandep Arora top scoring with 33.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Malvern Rifle Club would like to congratulate Allan White and Sam Kershaw, who were the 2021 Marlborough Spring Champions in Target Rifle, A Grade and C Grade respectively.

Last week’s (October 30th) shooting was the first day of the 2021/22 Club Championship, with 10 counting shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards.

The sun and a fishtailing headwind from the targets to the shooting mound greeted shooters, promising to make conditions challenging.

Chris, Tim, and Allan each managed a 50 which was great shooting in the conditions. Matthew also posted a great score in the F-Open.

Next weekend is the second Club Championship Day, with 15 counting shots at 800 and 900 yards.

Malvern Community Board Meeting in Darfield, Tuesday, October 26th2021 The Board meeting was held on Tuesday, October 26th, with the Group Manager Environmental in attendance via Zoom to provide information.

Correspondence was received from the Malvern Wards Japanese sister-city, Yubetsu, introducing their new Mayor, Mr Tomoyuki Karita. The Board agreed to hold a Zoom meeting with Yubetsu in October next year, to mark the anniversary of the signing of the friendship agreement.

Various maintenance issues around the District were discussed and it was noted that Faulkner Way Walkway in Springfield, which had been washed out in the recent flooding will be repaired.

The Government’s unilateral decision on the progress of Three Waters was noted and the Board will wait to see what input the Council and the community can have into this proposal.

Also noted was the ‘first of a kind’ partnership agreement that the Council has signed with Land Information NZ, to better manage Crown Pastoral Leases in the Selwyn District and protect native plants and animals.
