Rakaia based Anita Ruigrok, is in the process of putting together a fantastic Halloween experience for the local and surrounding area, all in conjunction with the Rakaia Scouts. On October 30th, the paddock behind the Scouts building will come alive as 'A Disney Graveyard’, offering something for all ages. This is a fundraising event to help Rakaia Scouts continue operating (entry is a gold coin donation). “Children in Rakaia don’t have a lot of afterschool activities they can participate in locally, so the Club is a truly valuable asset to the community,” commented Anita. “Last year a friend of mine, who lives just outside the Rakaia township, wanted to celebrate Halloween at her place, so we organised a little scary walk in her garden. Fifty to seventy people turned up and they are still talking about how great it was.

Anita Ruigrok with some of her amazing Disney character creations. “So, I approached the Rakaia Scouts, taking along mock-up drawings of what I'm capable of and what I wanted to build, and they responded amazingly. “I wanted to organise a Halloween event that children will talk about for a long time and hopefully remember for years. “I love to create, draw, paint and build things, as well as organising events, so this project ticks lots of boxes for me. Halloween only exists in a few houses in Rakaia, with not many homes decorated. “I have planned an all-ages

event that will take place before dinner, this will be more focused on games and candy, which has been kindly donated. There will be multiple games that attendees can participate in, if they would like more candy. For the enthusiastic Halloween supporters, there will be a dressup competition, photo booth, a barbeque, glow sticks for sale and more games. Three lucky winners will receive an extra bag of lollies and a $50 shopping voucher from the Rakaia Foursquare. “After 7pm the event will

transform into an experience, with the help of volunteers in costume and their faces painted, that will make the graveyard come alive! “I have been using large boxes to transform them into a Disney themed tombstone or character. The children have to guess which Disney movie is represented during the event. “I look forward to seeing you all on October 30th, for a fun-ﬁlled night,” Anita concluded. SHAVE FOR A CURE Shave for a Cure was a huge success for Darﬁeld High School this year, with seventeen students (Matthew Ashworth, Sophie Clarke, Katie Molloy, Meisha Carney, Maxim Wright, Hector Williams, Aden Goodfellow, Cameron Newell, Zahara Sutton, Seth Wright, Daniel Jackson, Makayala Turpin, Chloe Agnew, Caleb Warren, Ridge Keenan, Caleb Gundry, Heidi Hamilton) and one staff member (Jason Dickens) participating by shaving off all their hair or cutting more than 15cm off! “We have raised over $12,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand this year, from all the fundraising efforts of the

shavees and cutters, a gold coin donation non-uniform day on Friday, as well as a sausage sizzle,” commented Head Boy Matthew Ashworth. “We would like to thank Four Square Darﬁeld and Countdown Rolleston for their very kind donations of bread and sausages.

Also, thanks to Megan Pepper and New Image Hair Studio in Darﬁeld, for coming along to help tidy up everyone's hair! The shave day was very successful, with lots of students and members of the community coming along to show their support,” Matthew concluded.

MALVERN YOUTH TRUST AWARDS Earlier this year, Malvern Youth Trust (MYT) invited applications from Year 11 students at Darﬁeld High School, for two leadership awards (each of $2,000), towards fees for attending the 'Spirit Of Adventure' voyage. Recipients will have to raise the balance of the fees for the trip, the necessary equipment and their travel to the port of departure. Trust members were delighted at the high standard of all the applicants, which in turn made it very difficult to choose the two winners. ENDURANCE EVENT AT HORORATA

At ﬁrst light on Saturday, October 2nd, riders competing in a two day endurance ride held by the Canterbury Endurance and Trail Riding Club headed out from Hororata Domain. Combining their horsemanship and passion for endurance and trail riding. There were four distances to choose from, 80km, 40km, 20km and 10km. Each distance is well-marked and rider safety is paramount. Event stewards are located around the course and traffic management was a priority. Riders go out at different intervals and many choose to ride with friends. There are two kinds of competitions, one is Endurance, where the winner is ﬁrst across the line; and the other is Competitive Trail Riding (CTR) where a set time is given to achieve the course and a

point system determines the winner. Vets are present to monitor horse welfare, which is a priority in this wonderful sport. There were opportunities for all skill and ﬁtness levels, and for some it was quite simply a fun day out with friends. A few riders even bought their tents and camped overnight at the Domain, enjoying a fabulous Canterbury weekend of ﬁne weather.

The horses and ponies competing ranged from purebred Arabs to Clydesdales and everything in between. We always welcome new riders so come and enjoy a fun day out with your horse! You can ﬁnd out more information about endurance and competitive trail riding at canterburyendurance.co.nz

On Thursday, September 30th the annual Year 5/6 Malvern Primary Schools CantaMaths competition took place in the Glentunnel Community Centre. Due to Covid-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions, only four schools (five teams) participated in the event: Glentunnel, Windwhistle, Greendale and Hororata. The competition involved twenty problem-solving questions and five multi-choice questions within the allocated forty minutes. Tamariki all worked collaboratively in their teams and demonstrated some great mathematical flair throughout the whole competition. Overall mathematics was the winner on the day, with participants

enjoying having an event where they could display their talent in this area. Well done to every team, especially Windwhistle School attaining ﬁrst place, having previously not held this position before. The ﬁnal results were:

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY ON AIR A project to tell the stories behind the many faces of Selwyn is returning, this time to your ears. In celebration of CultureFest and Selwyn’s growing diversity, the third series of Faces of Selwyn launched last week. This year's stories will be shared as a podcast series with thirteen Selwyn residents from different cultures around the world discussing their lives, passions and how they came to call Selwyn home. It began on Tuesday, September 28th and will be broadcast every Tuesday to Thursday, until Thursday, October 14th on community access radio PlainsFM 96.9FM. Professional musician Paul Ubana Jones began the series discussing touring the world and why he calls Southbridge home. “Southbridge felt good, it felt friendly, yeah it was peaceful, I think the tempo was good. It

wasn’t frantic like a big city,” Paul explained. After hitchhiking from London to France, Paul moved to Switzerland where he met and married a beautiful Swiss woman, Corinne, who also became his Manager. Corinne and Paul have four children. Their ﬁrst two children were born in Zurich, the other two were born in New Zealand. Paul said after forty eight years of being a professional musician, he has not grown tired of it. “It’s really kept my spirit young,” Paul concluded. Selwyn district youth councillors, Maggie Cahill and Reece Mutonhori also feature, sharing their journeys to Selwyn from Ireland and Zimbabwe. Mayor Sam Broughton said, “He is really looking forward to Faces of Selwyn 2021. “Faces of Selwyn is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the growing diversity we have

here in Selwyn. Selwyn has been the fastest growing district over the last ten years, which has been driven by people wanting to raise their families here. I am really looking forward to hearing where people have come from and their connection to Selwyn,” Sam concluded. The podcasts will be available on Selwyn District Council’s Faces of Selwyn page. HANN HARVEST IS ON THE MARKET Hann Harvest is ready for another season of delicious strawberries, which will start appearing in the usual outlets from early next week. The raspberries will come on a bit later. It’s an exciting time of year when all the hard yards have been done over winter and spring to get the plants to this stage. Hann Harvest is going into its fourth season after Jason and Anne Hann moved from seed potatoes at Midway Farm in Darfield, after hearing of the berry industries’ transformation in Europe. The strawberries are grown in a tunnel house, on tables and are fed through a hydroponic unit. This is so a premium product is produced, but also so Hann Harvest can reduce the number of sprays used, as well as being much easier to pick. Natural methods are used to control any pest and disease that does manage to get in, especially bringing in predators such as Aphidius (for Aphid control) and Mite-E (which eats Two-Spotted Spider Mite). Beneficial plants like Buckwheat, Alyssum and Phacelia, are kept in the tunnel houses which gives the positive predators and bumblebees extra energy to keep doing what they do best. It is with real sorrow that the property and business are going on the market, proudly being marketed by Jo McIntosh and her team at Bayleys Darfield. Jason and Anne are excited to take up a very different opportunity on the family farm, and really hope that the new owners of Hann Harvest (whomever they will be), will be just as enthusiastic about berries! WATER REFORM PROPOSAL Selwyn District Council (SDC) has called for a pause in the Government’s water reform proposal and will not agree to transfer any water assets to a new entity without full engagement with the Selwyn community. The Council has sent its formal response to Minister for Local Government Nanaia Mahuta on the Government’s proposed three waters reforms proposals. The Council has reiterated calls for a pause in the water reform process, ﬁrst proposed by the Canterbury Mayoral Forum chaired by Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton. “As yet we do not believe the case for change has been proven for Selwyn, and in our response,

we have asked the Government for more information to help us fully understand certain issues and for time to consult with our community before making any decisions,” Sam commented. SDC has committed to consult with Selwyn residents before opting in or out of the reforms. “It is essential the public has a voice and is heard both in the reform proposals and the ongoing governance of our most essential of service. “Informal feedback has indicated that our communities’ primary concern is about losing a local say in the running of its assets. “The response also calls on the Government to answer important questions about the detail of how the reforms would work, before the Council and the

public can make an informed decision on the proposals. Among its questions the Council has asked for more information about how projected future costs have been calculated, how the partnership with mana whenua will work, how local community input into decision making will be retained, and how local planning priorities will be protected under the proposed changes. “The Council’s focus is to make sure communities continue to have secure, safe access to affordable water services, Sam concluded. Barbara’s husband is nuts. The only people she can trust with this information are the new vet and the village idiot. PERIODIC VS FIXED TERM TENANCY One of the many changes we have encountered this year is the change around the terms of the length of the tenancy. The good thing about some of the changes is that both parties have more options, but sometimes more options means less security, leaving all parties seriously considering heavily which option they should choose. It is a brutal world out there currently if you are searching for a rental, multiple people turning up to viewings, there are quite simply are not enough rental houses. So, it is no wonder potential tenants are looking for security, so here are the options: • A Periodic Tenancy, is the one with the most flexibility and less security. In a world where there are many rentals available this is a great option. Tenants need only give four weeks notice to vacate, and unless the tenant is consistently breaching their tenancy agreement, the landlord can only give notice for the tenant to move out if the house is going to be sold, if family is moving in, or for a staff member if documented in the Tenancy Agreement. • A Fixed Term, is pretty much that all parties are locked into the term stated, more often than not twelve months. A tenant should ask what the process is if they wish to break a fixed term, but until a replacement tenant is found, they are still liable for the rent. A landlord can not get out of this, even if the house is sold the tenant comes with the house. Once that fixed term is up the tenancy can be re-fixed, but both parties now need to agree to that. If they do not agree to it the tenancy changes to a periodic tenancy at the end of the fixed term. The Tenancy Services website is a great source of information on all areas of renting. So, if you are going to rent either way I recommend a read up there and gaining a basic understanding of your options.

DARFIELD POLICE REPORT With the Spring grass growth starting to take off now, it's an ideal time of the year for farmers to do a walk or drive around their roadside boundary fences. If required, do some maintenance and bring these fences up to a fully stockproof standard. Livestock will be attempting to push through roadside boundary fences to get to the fresh untouched roadside grass. A few months back, around a hundred cattle broke out of a local farm and this resulted in twenty-odd cattle beasts being bowled by the West Coast Coal Train, on the main trunk line in the early hours. If the cattle had made it a short distance further onto the West Coast Road, the result to motorists would have most likely been a fatality. It is also a good idea to run a live hot wire on the inside of your roadside boundary fences, as a further stockproof precaution. Police advise all householders, farmers and businesses to record an inventory of their valuable

possessions, which records the serial number of each item. Ideally with a photo of the item and serial number. If you are unfortunate to have something stolen, this record and serial number will be very useful and greatly increase the probability of the Police recovering your stolen possessions. There are only three months to go until Christmas, and unfortunately this is the time of the year that people seem to get sucked into scams via the telephone, internet etc. Never, ever give your bank or password details to someone calling you on the phone, claiming to be from your bank. There are still a lot of people who get scammed and ripped off via Facebook, Market Place (buy and sell site). If you use this site or similar sites, be aware that a lot of stolen goods are disposed of quickly via this means. If you are selling something do not hand over the item until you have received the agreed amount of money in cash. If

buying an item, view the item ﬁrst before handing over the agreed money for the sale. (Police advice is, if you choose to buy and or sell items via the Facebook site, “Do so at your own risk”.) Police ask that locals report boy racer and car burnout activity when they observe it at the time. If possible, take phone video footage of such activities. Police locally have apprehended several such offending drivers over the past year, which has resulted in vehicles being impounded for twenty eight days, successful prosecutions and drivers being disqualiﬁed by the courts. The assistance of the public reporting this poor driving behaviour greatly assists Police apprehending these offenders and getting them before the courts, thereby making the roads safer for all road users. KIRWEE TENNIS CLUB Saturday, October 2nd, saw the season opening for the Kirwee Tennis Club. During the week leading up to the opening several members spent many hours getting the courts and surroundings in tip-top shape. The weather on Opening Day was ﬁne, and started with the Junior Convenor Helena Cridge, taking registrations for Juniors, while Dave Ashton did some coaching with approx. twenty children. In the afternoon, a small group of enthusiastic Senior members

played doubles for the Lynchris Cup, which was won by Dave Ashton and Stu Begg. At their recent AGM, David Stott was made a Life Member and Terry Gallagher made a presentation to David at afternoon tea following the Open Day. This was given in recognition of the many years David has contributed to the Club. The Club has entered one President’s team and about three Junior teams in the Saturday competitions. There

is also a Malvern Twilight competition held on a Thursday night, where you make up your own teams. We are a very social Club and welcome more Juniors, Seniors and social members. Our President Chrissie Taylor and Club Captain Adrienne Begg, along with the committee, look forward to a great season. The Darfield High School (DHS) Senior A Netball team were runners-up in the Secondary Schools Canterbury Netball SuperNet Reserve Competition. 2021 has been a positive year for our Senior Netball teams with some great goals achieved. The players progression and growth throughout the season has been very noticeable, under the guidance of Coach, Sara Norton and Manager, Lynlea Willan. In 2020, the team lost their position in the SuperNet Reserve due to Covid and started 2021 in the A Grade of the Weekly Winter Netball Competition. After the first round of games played at Hagley, the team finished top of their grade which gave them the opportunity to play in a promotion-relegation match, to gain a place in the SuperNet Reserve for the remainder of the Competition. The team came up against Ellesmere High School Senior A and won that game convincingly. SuperNet Reserve was split into

two sections, our players were improving with every game and gaining more conﬁdence, this showed with the team ﬁnishing top of their section. Then Covid19 Lockdown came along again and disrupted the playoffs, which also meant the cancellation of the South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament for the second successive year. With three weeks off school and four weeks off game time, Secondary Schools Canterbury decided to complete the Finals of the

Weekly Winter Competition. The team was to play Burnside in the semi-ﬁnal but they defaulted, which meant they were straight through to the Finals against Lincoln A. KIRWEE BOWLS OPENING DAY The start of the Kirwee Bowling Club season was supported by fantastic weather and a great turnout of members, both old (no pun intended) and new. Club President, Lindsay Westaway welcomed all, followed by the rolling of the ﬁrst bowls by Life Member, Janet Dysart and Patron, Jim Brooker. Darfield Premier got the 2021/22, cricket season off to a perfect start with a 40 run win over Oxford at Darfield Domain last Saturday. Captain Liam Foulkes won the toss and elected to bat on a well-prepared surface with the outfield in beautiful spring condition. The Captain himself was the first wicket to fall with the score at 15 then regular wickets continued. Opener Zak Foulkes (36) was the fourth wicket to fall after being caught in the 12th over to bring the score to 60. Tom Dempster (40) joined Ben Innes (41) and the pair batted sensibly as they picked up ones and twos with the odd wayward ball getting smacked to the fence. They took the team score through to 132/5 when Dempster fell. Innes

was thereafter assisted by Mid-Canterbury teammate Nick Gilbert (14), Andrew Bell (14) and Will Greenslade (10) to take the total through to 195 as the last wicket fell with 3 overs un-used. In reply, Oxford were lucky not to lose a wicket from the first ball of the innings as speedster Zak Foulkes was denied a confident appeal for LBW. It mattered little because Oxford's top 3 batters were returned to the shed for single digit scores anyway. Tom Innes and Will Greenslade skimmed off the top order to leave the visitors wobbling at 42/5. David Fulton was his typical obdurate self as he collected 48 runs from 77

balls, but he couldn't convince his partners to stay with him long enough to close in on the target. Zak Foulkes, Ryan Hughes and Liam Foulkes picked up 2 wickets each to snuff out Oxford for 155 in the 42nd over. Darfield next play a red-hot Ohoka side at Darfield on Saturday 9th October.
