Desrae Johnson contacted emergency services about 1:15am on Thursday, September 23rd, as she was evacuating from the Sheffield Hotel via the fire escape.

Smoke alarms alerted Desrae to the fact that her well-loved and well-patronised 139 year old hotel was well alight.

Local firefighter Dan Doncliff was one of the first on the scene and was able to help Desrae and communicate with officers from the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade as they arrived.

Five fire engines, a turntable ladder, a command unit and several tankers attended the fire.

They struggled initially to put out the blaze, because the internal stairs had been damaged.

By 7:30am it was extinguished and crews were dampening down hotspots.

A specalist fire investigator has determined an electrical fault in the public bar area caused the blaze.

The Sheffield Fire Brigade made the following comment on

Facebook that morning, “In the early hours of this morning, we lost our oldest landmark the Sheffield Hotel (1882). Our condolences go out to Desrae who has put her heart and soul into the grand old girl. Thank goodness for working fire alarms that alerted Desrae of the situation and she was able to get out safely.”

The next day they posted again on social media, “The team at Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to thank the World Famous Sheffield Pie Shop.

Yesterday morning they received a call well before dawn, to see if they could feed all the crews that were fighting the fire at the Sheffield Hotel. They were quick of the mark and supplied hot coffee, pies, sausage rolls and filled rolls, which was very much appreciated by all involved.

Things like this is what makes a small community special.”

It was evident that everyone, not only in the immediate Sheffield area, but in the entire region, was devastated for Desrae.

The Riki family Sheryl, Reg, Janelle, Nathan, Tamara and Luana owned the Sheffield Hotel for twenty years and were distraught to hear the news about the fire.

“Absolutely heartbroken to see our childhood home of over twenty years in flames.

Christmas, 21st birthdays, celebrations, so many fond memories. That beautiful old girl nurtured us for many years,’ commented the sisters.

To the Editor: In the absence of any real detail from our Council on the water reforms, I viewed a video of Ministers Mahuta and Robertson during a Q&A session, posted after the July 2021 Local Government Conference in which our Councillors and management attended. The responses to questions as usual lacked any detail, had plenty of obscure warnings if the reforms don’t proceed and as such unhelpful for a concerned ratepayer.

While Local Government NZ can purport to represent Councils while cosying up to Government, thankfully they do not represent ratepayers.

Our Mayor was quoted in the media last Friday, indicating consultation with ratepayers will be undertaken when Government has provided further information, including presumably, if our Council will be allowed to consult. Some democracy we have!

Seems odd that many other District and City Mayors and Councillors consider they have

sufficient information to push back firmly against the reforms.

Only one Selwyn District Councillor to date has raised concerns about the reforms.

Clearly, there was sufficient information out there for that District Councillor to offer a public opinion. Good on him.

As a ratepayer, it feels like Council are a bit like Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burns.

To the Editor: Kia ora, I was not surprised to hear that your reader felt that there was an absence of any real detail from the Government on their reform proposal, as the Government has not gone to the community to seek views about it.

Our Council has made a concerted effort to share what we know, including your

newspaper carrying releases by Council to inform the community and a double-page spread in last week’s Selwyn Times. We have expanded our dedicated three waters reform webpage: www.selwyn.govt.nz/threewaters and released information videos via social media. There are also leaflets in our libraries and service centres for people to pick up and read.

I have publicly said that the case for change has yet to be proven for Selwyn. Canterbury Councils are working together and have asked the Government for more time rather than rushing change.

Our Council has committed to ask our communities for their view before any decision is made by us to change to a new system or not, and we expect to consult with the community before the end of the year. The Government may of course make it mandatory in the meantime.

DARFIELD ARTWEEK 2021 Darfield Artweek will go ahead under Covid Level 2 from October 8th - 17th. The Artweek Committee are busy organising the event and receiving entries from artists. Entries close on October 1st, so there is still time to enter.

Awards will be presented on Opening Night, October 8th, at the Darfield Recreation Centre.

This year we are restricting the Opening Night event to artists and sponsors only, due to the Covid Level 2 restrictions, which limits the size of events

to 100 people.

We are hosting a public event to celebrate 40 years of Darfield Artweek on Saturday, October 9th and encourage volunteers and friends of our gallery, past and present, to come and celebrate this milestone with us. The event will be held at the Darfield Recreation Centre and attendees will have the opportunity to view the exhibition at this time and the sales desk will be open. Tickets are $10 and are available from Te Huanui - Darfield Art Gallery.

Covid Level 2 restrictions limits apply.

The Darfield Artweek exhibition will be open to the general public from Saturday, October 9th until Sunday, October 16th.

The exhibition will close at 4pm on the last day.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS Celebrate 40 years of Malvern Community Arts Council’s annual exhibition, now known as Darfield Artweek at Te Huanui this October. ‘Celebrating 40 Years of Darfield Artweek’ opens on Friday, October 1st and runs until the last Thursday of October. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening, but please remember that Covid Level 2 restrictions do apply.

Darfield Artweek began as a weekend exhibition held at Darfield High School, featuring guest artists and over time, morphed into the week-long event we all now know. To commemorate 40 years, Te Huanui’s Gallery Committee members have spent many hours contacting previous premier award winners, where Artweek was a starting point in

the exhibiting career for several of the artists.

Te Huanui and Malvern Community Arts Council are grateful for the support of the Selwyn District Council Creative Communities Fund, allowing them to bring this exhibition to the local community.

Elise (5) and Lexi (6) got into the swing of Pirate Day at Kirwee Model School recently.

The Pirate-themed day included activities such as sea shanties, compass reading and treasure map making. It was a great day with lots of Pirate antics and no one needed to walk the plank!

Last Friday, Darfield Primary School held a yellow themed dress-up day for Daffodil Day. The teachers and students raised $400 which will help support people that have been diagnosed with cancer.

To have three establishments in the area destroyed by fire within two years, is despairing for the community.

The 141 year old Kirwee Tavern was extensively damaged on Christmas Eve 2019 (alarm sounded at 11:50pm) and in May 2020 completely demolished.

“Unfortunately there is no update on ‘The Wee’, still with Selwyn District Council planning department,” Steve concluded.

Fire Brigades were called out to Woodley's Restaurant and Wine Bar in Darfield, about 12.40am on Sunday, February 2nd, 2020.

Currently, the building remains standing and plans have been finalised, now waiting for the consent process. Work will most likely not commence until the new year.

Sheffield Hotel History

Information from The Cyclopedia of New Zealand 1903.

The Hotel was erected in 1882,

by Mr. Michael Flanagan, and subsequently passed through several hands. Mr. Dennis Mahar bought the property in June 1902, and since that date it has been conducted as a first-class country hotel. The bedrooms and sitting rooms are clean, comfortable, and well furnished, and the bath is provided with hot and cold water. Wines and spirits

of the best quality are served, and a good table is kept. The billiard room contains a fullsized modern table. There is ample stable accommodation, and there are also paddocks for travelling sheep.

The Sheffield Hotel has overall heritage significance to Sheffield and to the district of Selwyn.

The hotel has historical and social significance for its association with its former patrons and publicans, especially Michael Flanagan and Dennis Mahar, and the late 19th century development of the district. The Sheffield Hotel has cultural significance, as a place of historic continuity and architectural significance as an example of the work of Theodore Jacobsen.

The Sheffield Hotel has craftsmanship value for the quality of its construction, detailing and the contextual significance as a local landmark.

The site of the Sheffield Hotel has potential archaeological significance in view of the age of the building.

WORLD JUNIOR FREERIDE TOUR Local seventeen year old skier, Tom Freeman, competed at the last round of New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour (NZJFT), at the Remarkables on September 17th - 18th. After a series of crashes at preceding events, he managed to put down a winning run and walked away with the U18 title. Skiing out of Mt Olympus, Tom with his Freeride team stood on top of nearly all the podiums, with exlocals Ruby and Sam Hewitt, Will and Joe Cookson and little sister Poppy Freeman. Every year the NZJFT hand out wildcard entries into the World Junior Freeride Tour (WJFT) event, held in Europe. Tom was lucky enough to be chosen, along with Ruby, to represent New Zealand next year.

The WJFT is a circuit dedicated to young athletes up to 18 years of age, to develop the talents of tomorrow and encourage youth participation in the sport.

Emphasis is also placed on injury prevention, safety, and understanding the mountain environment. This competition sees the best of the best compete against each other on the world stage. They compete in either skiing or snowboarding on some of the most legendary and challenging alpine faces.

Tom started skiing at the age of three, chasing his two older brothers around Porters and doing their Freeride Programme, until it was soon obvious that more extreme terrain was needed and the shift to

Olympus was made. Since then, Tom has competed every year at the NZJFT and New Zealand Nationals, as well as representing at school racing for Hororata Primary, Darfield High School and now Christchurch Boys High School. He has also picked up a New Zealand Title for Open Water Swimming, but now Skiing has become his main focus.

Tom is planning to head to Europe in early 2022 by himself, to participate in a few competitions before his chance to stand at the top with the best Junior Freeride athletes in the world. He now has started the hard job of raising funds to make his dream happen.

Freeman household it’s a whole family affair, Phil (Tom’s Dad) is currently Club Captain at Olympus, Annabel (Tom’s Mum) is the facilitator, feeding, clothing travelling and picking up the pieces. First son Will is currently Patrolling at Mt Olympus, Henry is squeezing in filming, MCing at competitions and coaching, while doing an electrical apprenticeship (competed in the 2019 WJFT) and then there’s Poppy, showing that girls can do anything having a stellar year.

DARFIELD TENNIS The Darfield Tennis Club Opening Day held on September, 18th, was a huge success in the Junior section, with over twenty potential Roger Federer’s or Serena Williams vowing for hotshot and Division One to Four spots. However, as per previous years, the number of new Seniors was disappointing considering how many new builds are occurring in the district. If you are keen on being involved in a Saturday Interclub team, or Thursday night Social/ Twilight team, contact Rob for Seniors/Presidents/Twilight, or Vicky for Juniors.

The Club would like to thank the new Junior Coach, Todd Breeze, for attending and adding some exciting skills.

Darfield Tennis Club is looking at having four/five Junior teams playing this season, as well as two/three President Grade teams. The Senior competition starts on October 9th and Juniors start on October 30th.

The group will also be fielding at least five Twilight Social

teams, in the Thursday evening competition. This is one and a half hours of fun, followed by a coffee or bevvy or two. If you are contemplating putting a team together for this (four needed), or want to put yourself into an established team, then please contact Rob. The Big Seedling and Plant Swap It’s time to bring your excess seedlings for a big seedling swap. We are extending the swap to include seeds, bulbs, seedlings, plants, cuttings and produce (excess vegetables, herbs, fruit, etc).

Bring along your items to share and please label your plants with the name of what it is. Listen and learn about the basics of looking after plants, hardening off, watering, and how to feed plants during the growing period. Choose which plants

you wish to take home from the stash. It’s also a great opportunity to chat with other gardeners.

Covid Level 2 meant changes and adjustments had to be made to the annual Country Craft and Fair day. As reported last week, it has been broken down into three smaller events.

Saturday's high winds happened and threatened to throw another spanner in the works, yet despite all this, the Plant Sale was a huge success. One has to conclude that gardeners are hardy souls, as they braved the weather to head along and see the assortment of heritage tomatoes, vegetable seedlings, perennials, flowers and hardy natives that were on offer.

Stallholders set up tables protected in the lee of the church and the foyer, luckily the rain held off. A huge thank you to all the visitors to the Plant Sale who used QR codes or sign-in sheets for contact tracing, and most continued to wear masks despite being outdoors. The event raised $978.50, which is very close to the same amount as when it is held alongside the annual Craft Fair.

Part Two of the annual Fair takes place with the White Elephant stall opening up on Saturday, October 16th.

The September Open Garden was quieter than usual because of the forecast for wild winds, as well as a bit of uncertainty due to the changing Covid levels. The wild weather did not eventuate, fortunately, and the plant stall was busy with trilliums being the main purchase. Many visitors headed straight for the stall to purchase their requirements, before relaxing around the garden with its mass display of violets, primroses, daffodils and trilliums, with hellebores still making a wonderful showing.

The next Open Day is on Sunday, October 3rd from 11am till 3pm, weather and Covid permitting!

There will be bluebells in the woods, and still many trilliums and daffodils, as well as other woodland bulbs and perennials.

The Big Tree Walking Track goes along the north side of the homestead drive, with 150 year old sequoias on show.

The homestead planting began before 1860, massive hornbeams, Portuguese laurel, sycamores, horse chestnuts, oaks and elms, celery pine, medlar, gingko and judas trees are some of the wonderful specimens. The garden has developed from a more formal Victorian garden, to the informal country garden of today.

The Hutch, (a refurbished summer house), will be open displaying old farming and garden tools, some of which are the cause of much debate.

Children's activities will be available to keep them and their parents entertained. Visitors are encouraged to bring their picnics to enjoy on the lawns of the historic homestead, still the private residence of Richard and Kate Foster. Woodland plants, including many trilliums will be for sale. The $10 entry fee goes to the Terrace Station Charitable

Trust, children enter free. Please note there is no Eftpos. Terrace Station will be signposted from the Hororata roundabout, and please, leave your dogs at home.

In a normal tone, he asks, “Honey, what’s for supper?” No response. So he moves to the other end of the room and repeats, “Honey, what’s for supper?” Still no response. Next, he moves into the dining room.

“Honey, what’s for supper?” No response, so he walks up to the kitchen door.

“Honey, what’s for supper?” Again, there is no response, so he walks right up behind her.

“Honey, what’s for supper?”…. “For the fifth time, Harry, CHICKEN!”
