Covid-19 Lockdowns can show the true meaning of community spirit, especially when fun contactless activities are created that involve family bubbles and fresh air! These challenging times can bring out the best in people and it’s often the simple things that bring a smile to faces.

Ten teddies have recently appeared in Waddington to help break this year’s Lockdown blues. The Great Waddington Teddy Bear Walk is a fun community activity, based on last year’s Covid-19 ‘teddy-inthe-window’ boredom buster.

The teddies are numbered and strategically placed around the township, for families and adults alike to discover. The walk starts at the bridge, at the Sheffield end of Waddington Road and heads towards Old West Coast Road.

DONATE FOR MENTAL HEALTH Growing up in West Melton surrounded by animals, with parents in the medical profession and a keen interest in sciences, it's no surprise that a career as a Vet appealed to me (Eddie Searle) so much.

I am currently in my fourth year of Vet at Massey University and so far in the degree, as well as learning how to look after all sorts of animals, I have also unfortunately learnt about the very poor state of mental health amongst members of the Vet profession.

Vets have a suicide rate that is well above that of the general population and it is something that needs to be addressed before the problem worsens. In 2014, Dr. Nicole McArthur created the Not One More Vet (NOMV) charity, following the suicide of her colleague Dr. Sophia Yin. I remember watching some videos by Dr. Yin in class and subsequently jumping on google to see what she was doing these days. I was shocked to see that she had died by suicide, especially as she had

seemed like such a cheerful person in the videos we had just viewed.

When I saw that the NOMV charity had organised a fundraiser called the ‘Race Around the World’, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to do my bit to help make improvements in the profession, by raising funds to support the

work done by NOMV. I have set myself a goal to run 50miles/80km over the month of September. Many of my classmates have also signed up, as well as hundreds of people from around the world. The overall aim is to cover 25,000 miles and collectively raise $150,000 USD. Eddie Searle.

Every day, six people are diagnosed with blood cancer or a related condition in New Zealand. For many, this cause is close to the heart.

‘Shave for a Cure’ is Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s signature annual fundraising event. Each year, thousands of Kiwis from across the country shave their heads, or cut a minimum of 15cm off their hair, to help patients and their families, and to let them know they are not alone or forgotten. Those participating or

donating are raising vital funds to help find more effective treatments to save lives and make sure people with cancer get the support they need, to get through a really tough time in their lives.

Darfield High School (DHS) is doing their part to help by participating in this year’s ‘Shave for a Cure’. At the moment they have ten students taking part (Sophie Clarke, Matthew Ashworth, Maxim Wright, Hector Williams, Meisha Carney, Aden Goodfellow,

Ridge Keenan, Katie Molloy, Zahara Sutton and Seth Wright).

“We have a target of raising $10,000, currently we are at $7,000. We are hoping to smash our goal out of the park,” commented Team Captain, Matthew Ashworth.

FREWS JOURNEY A hundred years is a notable time for any transport company to be in business. But when it is still under the ownership of the founding family, that is a real accomplishment. And that’s what Canterbury firm, Frews Transport, can boast as it closes in on its centennial to be celebrated next month.

The home base for the rural transport operation of Frews Transport Ltd, is the midCanterbury township of Darfield, 50km west of Christchurch. Its associated company, Frews Contracting Ltd (independent but still family-owned), is located in the Christchurch suburb of Yaldhurst.

Just as noteworthy as the continuity of ownership, is the consistency in the type of cartage work Frews Transport undertakes. At its core, the company serves the rural farming communities around Darfield and Oxford carting livestock, bulk grain, fertiliser, logs and general freight, in much the same way as E.H. (Edgar Harold) Frew and his partner W. McCrostie did, when they began trading as McCrostie and Frew in the Greendale area, in 1921.

Naturally, in terms of equipment, the operation was a lot more modest a hundred years ago, a single traction engine pulling four wagons, compared with around sixty trucks plus trailers of the current fleets at Darfield

and Oxford. Add to this the fifty trucks, loaders and excavators operated by Frews Contracting Ltd and it’s obvious the collective size of the business has come a long way in the last hundred years.

When McCrostie left the haulage partnership, Edgar Frew was joined by his only son, John.

From then on the business traded as E.H. Frew and was based in Greendale, until the move to Darfield took place in 1946. From the mid 1960s, John oversaw a period of expansion initiated by his sons Evan, Merv and Owen, where operations were extended to North Canterbury and Christchurch.

In 2000, the family were faced with the complexities and challenges of multiple family ownership of the various companies that made up the Frew group, it was then decided to split the group into three stand-alone commercial entities.

Frews North Canterbury went to Owen, the Christchurch contracting division went to Evan and became Frews Contracting, and Merv retained the Frews Darfield operation.

Owen has subsequently sold Frews North Canterbury, with the Oxford branch being purchased again by Frews Transport.

With Evan and Merv now retired from the day to day operations of Frews Transport and Frews Contracting, management and ownership has passed to their sons, Dean, Chaz and Hamish, the fourth generation of the Frew family.

As Merv Frew puts it “Not many companies have been going for a hundred years, with the same family actually running them.

The name might be the same, but in most cases ownership has changed.”

To be in business any company needs clients and staff. The Frew family takes this opportunity to thank all those people who have been our loyal clients or worked for us over the last hundred years. ROCKS BRINGING JOY The painted rock craze is still alive and well in Darfield, as well as around the country. Recently Darfield locals have found some rocks from Invercargill (Facebook page: Invers Rocks) in Darfield Township, while out exercising.

These rocks have been rehidden locally and are waiting on the next lucky person to find them.

The goal of this craze is to bring some cheer while people are out

exploring in their community, or around New Zealand after Lockdown. The rock hunt also helps encourage peoples creativity!

The idea is, if you find an artrock, you take a photo of it, share it on the group's Facebook page (found on the bottom of some rocks), or your local page (Jam Rocks, Darfield), then keep it, or re-hide it for others to find.

It’s amazing how far these rocks can, and have, travelled!

If anyone is creating some beautiful rock artworks this Lockdown, remember to coat them with a sealer so they will be weatherproof! This is a great activity to brighten people’s

HERITAGE GARDEN Because of a dire weather forecast for the August open day, ‘Snowdrop Sunday’ was deferred to August 15th, which was a glorious, blue-sky day.

The snowdrops were further advanced and return visitors commented on the hellebores, a new feature in the woods. The plant stall was extremely busy and Kate Foster was seen with a spade in hand digging up more requests for keen spring gardeners.

The second open garden day this spring will be on Sunday, September 12th (please check Terrace Station's Facebook page if in doubt about the weather or the Covid situation). Spring is a superb time of year at Terrace Station, where only the sounds of nature can be heard. Violets, primroses, daffodils and trilliums are flourishing this month.

The tall tree walkway featuring sequoias and oaks is a delightful diversion from the gardens around the house.

The Hutch will be open with its display of historic farming and gardening tools and some 19th century domestic items on the quiz table will be a mystery to younger visitors! Children will be

entertained by searching in the woods and gardens for items on a list, which icludes cones and leaves.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy in the many sheltered corners of the garden.

Woodland plants will be for sale, there is no Eftpos facilities available. The $10 entry fee goes to the Terrace Station

Charitable Trust, children enter free. Terrace Station will be signposted from the Hororata roundabout. Please leave dogs at home and remember to bring your mask!

PROPOSED UPGRADES

As one of the largest urban areas without reticulated wastewater, Darfield and nearby Kirwee residents are being asked to consider a new pipe network, to discharge sewerage from their urban areas, to the Pines Wastewater Treatment Plant, in Rolleston. The public notification in the Long Term Plan, specifically seeks residents views regarding the willingness to pay for some of the costs of the new infrastructure and this is likely to result in divided community views.

On-site wastewater systems (aka septic systems) for each property have typically been used to deal with wastewater in these townships, with some systems being over thirty years old. Modern wastewater systems use modern technologies and can treat waste to a high degree, breaking down pathogens to enable the discharge seeping into the ground to be relatively clean and the soil further treating it, reducing any remaining contaminants effects on groundwater.

One of the key issues with the continued use of existing septic systems is poor maintenance by landowners, leading to the systems no longer functioning properly, especially for older systems using less efficient technology. Systems that fail

may result in ponding on the surface, or untreated liquid entering waterways, or groundwater and may have adverse effects on public health.

This is the primary driver for seeking these systems to be replaced with a Council owned and operated reticulated system.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) is the regional authority responsible for issuing resource consents for on-site wastewater systems and resource consent renewals, this process can cost $3,000 - $5,000. ECan have been indicating in recent years, there will be a point when they no longer issue consents for onsite wastewater systems in urban centres, such as Darfield, Kirwee, Dunsandel and Hororata.

The Canterbury District Health Board often submit on plan changes and resource consents that seek to create additional residential development, citing the potential risk to public health risks from systems failing and possibly affecting groundwater quality from having so many systems in a single concentrated area.

If the sewer pipeline to Rolleston is constructed, sewerage from all new developments will be required to connect to the system and over time, established areas of Darfield and Kirwee will be required to also connect to this system. Costs for the

new infrastructure, including the pipe network throughout the township to connect each household to the system, will be funded in part by central Government funds for which millions have already been secured, but ultimately some costs will be imposed on the rate -paying base.

The benefit to the community from a reticulated system, will be a reduced risk from multiple older septic systems failing and potentially polluting groundwater. Residents in these townships have a great opportunity to submit to help decide if the proposed pipework should go ahead. The benefits of a new reticulated system of not having to seek renewals on existing septic tank systems, or carry out annual maintenance, or worry about the quality of drinking water far outweigh the costs of funding the new pipeline.

CRESSY OAKS, DARFIELD Locals Evan and Maureen Frew have had a long connection with the land that is now Cressy Oaks subdivision. They bought the forty seven hectares of land as a lifestyle farming block over thirty years ago and are currently still farming most of it. In the late 1990s, the subdivision began with nine lots along McLaughlins Road.

Since then, there have been an additional sixty six sections developed in stages one through to four. With the fifth and final stage now under construction, ten generously sized residential sections will complete Cressy Oaks.

When it came time to name the subdivision, rather than using their family names, Evan and Maureen chose Cressy Oaks. The ‘Cressy’ was one of the First Four Ships, which arrived at Lyttelton, Canterbury in 1850 carrying approximately 155 passengers from England.

Evan Frew’s great great grandparents, Robert and Sarah Evans, were on board. Their daughter, Caroline, was born a

year later in Lyttelton. Caroline went on to marry John Frew settling in Greendale, where they had eighteen children.

The streets in Cressy Oaks were given names related to the family history: • William Hyde Place was named after Maureen Frew’s Bradley family, who arrived in New Zealand from England on the ‘William Hyde’ in

1852. The family lived in Christchurch before settling in Ohoka.

Glenmark Drive was named after the ship, ‘Glenmark’, that sailed from Northern Ireland to Canterbury. Samuel and Esther Wilson, Maureen Frew’s great grandparents, were on board and later settled on a small farm in Weedons.

Westmoreland Avenue was named for Evan Frew’s great great grandparents, Christopher and Margaret Robinson, who left their home in Westmoreland, England in the 1860s and sailed to Otago. Here the family farmed in Moneymore.

Killead is the place in Northern Ireland where John Frew lived before emigrating

to Canterbury in the 1860s and marrying Caroline Evans, hence Killead Avenue.

An oak tree in the first stage reserve ties in with the subdivision’s name and the English side of the family’s history.

TRUST WELCOMES NEW TRUSTEE Lifelong Hororataian, Chris Thwaites has been appointed to the Hororata Community Trust as a Trustee. Chair Richard Lang, welcomed Chris, “Chris has been involved with many of the Trust activities over the past ten years, he has deep family connections to the area and volunteers his time to many different groups. Chris is a motivator, he gets people involved in the community and leads by example, by rolling up his sleeves. It is exciting to have his passion and vision around the Hororata Community Trust table.”

Chris lives with his wife Jane and three children, on the Thwaites family farm in Hororata. A passionate sports person, Chris is involved with the Selwyn Rugby Club, Cricket Club and Mt Olympus Ski Club, he is also on the Hororata Primary School Board of Trustees. He is also a representative of the Go Hororata group, working on developing new facilities for the community.

“It is fair to say my life is pretty busy, so when the opportunity to join the Hororata Community Trust as a Trustee arose, I had to really think if I have time to commit to this role. However,

knowing the positive impact the Trust has on our community, I felt it was worth making that time. The Trust supports our community in many ways that a lot of people are not even aware of. I am excited to part of it, I want to ensure Hororata and surrounding communities remains to be a special place for years to come,” commented Chris.

The Hororata Community Trust encompasses communities of a large rural district in the heart of Selwyn, from Hororata, Glentunnel to Lake Coleridge.

Whether it be through developing major events, like the Hororata Highland Games and Hororata Glow Festival, supporting smaller communityled initiatives and collaborations, working to develop plans for future facilities to meet growing needs, or promoting the heritage of the area, the Trust is focused on enabling its community to thrive.

Richard Lang added, “The Hororata Community Trust is now ten years old, but reflecting over the challenges of the past

eighteen months, I think we can look back on a year in which we have focused particularly on the wellbeing of our community, of our people and how they have shown resilience in the face of, not just Covid, but the May floods. One of the main ways we do help wellbeing, is by connecting and supporting other community groups, by providing resources to the volunteers working tirelessly to make great things happen.”

“Looking forward to the next twelve months, our focus will be on the wellbeing of our community and developing a Digital Community Hub, which will give people access to a range of digital tools to help them with their volunteer roles.

The Hororata Highland Games is only eight weeks away and we are excited to hold this event for the 11th consecutive year.

We will also focus on enabling other community events to be a success. We will continue to support our community with developing facilities needed for now and in the future,” Richard concluded.

NOURISH SUNFLOWER COMPETITION Bronwyn Adams-Hooper from Nourish Community Garden, Darfield, thinks we all might like to smile more! The world needs more smiles right now and (Bronwyn believes) one sure way to smile is to look at a sunflower!

So, she had an awesome idea of making Darfield the sunflower town of New Zealand.

Outside the Community Garden Pantry, there are pots full of potting mix, with two Skyscraper Sunflower seeds. They just need people to take them home, put them in a sunny hot place and watch them grow. When the risk of frost has passed, plant them out.

There will be prizes at the end of the season for the tallest, largest head (measured by the diameter of the seedhead) and the most creative planting.

Consultation is now open, on a proposal for future local representation for Selwyn.

The proposal is part of the Council’s representation review, which will result in changes to the way the Council is elected and structured from the next local elections, in 2022.

The council’s initial proposal for consultation retains a four ward structure, but with changes to ward boundaries and reduces the number of councillors from eleven to ten. It also proposes to retain the Malvern Community Board.

All Councils must review their representation arrangements at least every six years. Selwyn last undertook a representation review in 2015, in preparation for the 2016 elections.

Since that time, Selwyn’s population has grown rapidly but unevenly across the district.

This means the ratio of population per councillor has become uneven and the existing ward boundaries are no longer appropriate.

“One of the key principles of fair representation, is that

each elected member should represent roughly the same number of people,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton.

“This proposal makes changes that will help to ensure a more equal distribution of councillors, so that residents get fair and equal representation around the Council table.

The key changes in the proposal for consultation include: • West Melton would move from the current Selwyn Central Ward to the Malvern Ward • The area between Burnham and Rolleston would move from the current Selwyn Central Ward to the Ellesmere Ward • An area east of Rolleston would move from the current Selwyn Central Ward to the Springs Ward.

The Selwyn Central Ward would be replaced by a smaller Rolleston Ward and would have three councillors rather than the current four, with all the other wards retaining their current number of councillors.

The Malvern Community Board would be retained, with five

members, elected from the existing subdivisions of Hawkins (two) and Tawera (one), and a new subdivision covering West Melton (two).

The Council is now inviting public submissions on the representation proposal.

Submissions are open until 5pm, Monday, October 4th.

“The Council is hoping to be able to schedule drop-in information sessions later this month, but this will depend on Covid-19 alert level requirements,” Sam added.

“We’re also planning some online information sessions, so we encourage people to check the website for the latest updates and any changes.

“We do want to hear people’s views. It’s important that we get this representation structure right, so that residents can be confident that they are well represented, and that the Council can function effectively,” Sam concluded.

WARMEST WINTER Winter 2021 was the warmest winter on record in Aotearoa New Zealand, surpassing winter 2020 that set the record just last year. The season began on a particularly warm note, with June 2021 being New Zealand’s warmest June on record. Winter 2021 was also the first winter on record where the temperature anomaly exceeded +0.9˚ᶜ for all three months, relative to the 1981 - 2010 long-term average.

Several factors contributed to this record-setting season, including frequent high pressure over and east of New Zealand, warm northerly-quarter wind flows, warmer than average coastal waters, and the influence of a decaying La Nina early in the season, followed by a trend back toward La Nina late in the season.

Several atmospheric rivers affected New Zealand during winter, causing extreme rainfall in some regions, which was associated with the MaddenJulian Oscillation spending more time in the Indian Ocean and

briefly pulsing eastward over the Pacific. This was likely connected to the emergence of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole, which refers to warmer than average ocean temperatures in the eastern Indian Ocean. For New Zealand, this may have allowed for more tropical moisture to become available to passing weather systems.

Highlights for winter 2021: • The highest temperature was 23.0°ᶜ, observed at Akaroa and Orari Estate on 24th August.

• The lowest temperature was 9.1°ᶜ, observed at Lake Tekapo on 9th August.

• The highest 1-day rainfall was 210 mm, recorded at Arthur’s Pass on 16th July.

• The highest wind gust was 191 km/h, observed at Cape Turnagain on 28th June.

• Of the six main centres in winter 2021, Auckland was the warmest and sunniest, Christchurch was the coolest, Wellington was the wettest, and Dunedin was the driest and least sunny.
