Approximately fifty players from around New Zealand were selected to attend a trial and three day camp in Auckland, in July, where players were tested on everything.

the Burnham Club and has represented Canterbury Touch for the past four years as well. Tyler loves being able to travel with some of his mates and make new friends all while playing a sport he loves. Touch also helps him work on some basic skills that he uses in rugby, like passing etc which helps during the winter rugby season. The fast pace and the thinking behind all the different plays is another drawcard for him. Tyler loves sport in general, but when he has any spare time he likes to hang out with mates or just chill out at home. The selection process started at Nationals in February,

Tyler decided to play touch, when he was younger, after some friends recommended he try it, so they took him along to their Club and he has loved playing the game ever since! SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE RejuvenateYou Health, Fitness and Wellbeing Hub NZ was intending on holding a Daffodil Day Walk on Saturday, August 28th, but due to the Lockdown this could not take place as planned. However, Ainsley Burton, founder of the Hub, encouraged people to still participate in a Daffodil Day Walk in their bubbles, which could include their furry friends! Those wanting to take part were encouraged to dress up in their best yellow outﬁts for the occasion and they could make a donation online. Ainsley and her fur baby Frankie also clocked up 30kms in walks last week in their bubble, donating $5 per km to the Cancer Society! They had a fantastic time exploring their local area, while also helping a worthwhile cause and sticking to the Level 4 rules. Ainsley reached her goal of raising $500 through the generosity of partakers! She would like to thank everyone who joined it or donated. Cancer impacts so many of us in New Zealand, affecting 1 in 3 people. Every donation received means the Cancer Society can continue to help by funding cancer research, prevention and support services for people with cancer and their whanau, when they need it most.

LOCKDOWN FOR STUDENTS Darﬁeld High School (DHS) Head Boy Matthew Ashworth and Head Girl Sophie Clarke, were approached to see how they were ﬁnding Lockdown this time around and if they had done anything to help keep the student community connected through this challenging time. “Together with the student leaders, we have produced some cool videos to help motivate the students and community from our social media pages. new trick or skill to send through to us, for the chance to win an awesome prize,” Sophie commented proudly. “Lockdown, for me, was quite a sudden change to start online learning again, however, the school has been great in their response, having learnt from last year. I have appreciated a bit of a break mid-term to catch up on school work and it's been good to get outside, taking advantage of the great weather. I think it's important to keep up with school work, but also look after

yourself by taking a break, doing something you enjoy, and getting some fresh air outside,” Sophie concluded. “Lockdown came as a shock for most of us, getting used to being in Level 1 and then a quick change in levels, meant that we all had to change back to learning online and adapting back to learning at home, commented Matthew. “I have enjoyed Lockdown so far because I have been able to do some schoolwork, the weather has also been good so I have got things done around the house. I have liked being able to go on walks and runs during this time as well. Just remember, that at the end of the day everything is going to be ﬁne and we are all in this together. Trust the process’ and be kind to each other,” Matthew concluded.

QUALIFIED FOR NATIONALS CHOOSING THE RIGHT TENANT OR LANDLORD We are all familiar with the shows that scare any landlord or potential landlord, into feeling like all tenants come with a desire to stain your carpets, not pay their rent and will leave the property infested with pet excrement. Or the all too familiar story of cold damp houses and landlords who do nothing to maintain them. Frankly, these stories completely irk me. Yes, there are some bad stories from both sides, but these are such a small portion of a very large industry and to me, they only demonstrate that not enough homework has been done and the tenant has not been matched to the right property and landlord. Yes, credit and reference checks play a big part, but some open discussion around the property and why the person may want to live there is also critical. I have had many people believe they want to move out to the country for a variety of reasons and I have conversations with them about the cost of travel and isolation. There was the guy who had only used a heat pump and asked me if the firewood comes from him cutting down the trees in the yard, I was pretty sure that country living was not for him! You need to be honest about the house you are showing, if you know that the bedrooms are cold in winter, say that. It is better than having an unhappy tenant who can’t afford their rent because the power bill is too high. On the other hand, if you are a tenant looking at a house you also need to assess the person you will deal with, be it the property manager or landlord. Are they someone you think you can get on with, not like best friends, but you will be seeing them for maintenance, inspections, etc? How do you think they will respond to reasonable requests? And really assess the house and the community, is this the home for you? Ask as many questions as you can. There is a responsibility from both sides to do the groundwork and I believe the biggest factor for a successful landlord or property manager/ tenant relationship is matching the right person to the right house.

(meaning that all five judges ranked her in first place), she then moved onto the heats. The heats helped narrow down the top five competitors, who proceeded through to the finals. With a fantastic effort, Rubie won the heats and then continued to take the win for the final! This means that she has now qualified to compete at the NZCAF Nationals competition, which is planned to be held in Wellington at the end of the month, hopefully! There were seven groups in the Teams in category, which meant that they didn’t need to hold a preliminary round. The girls won their heat (with another straight run) and then went on to win their final, which means they have also qualified to compete at Nationals! Unfortunately with this latest lockdown, we aren’t sure what will happen with Nationals. It’s basically a wait and see situation as to whether or not it will go ahead, or be moved to a different date. Never the less, congratulations to both girls for their achievements, you should be very proud!

RENT RELIEF GUIDANCE The impacts of Covid-19 are yet again particularly felt by ‘non-essential’ business tenants, who have been forced to close during Covid-19 Alert Level 4 (and may have to remain closed during Alert Level 3), but remain subject to a lease for their business premises. Many landlords and tenants will have grappled with rent relief during the 2020 lockdown; but there will be many new landlords and business owners since then, for whom the impact of lockdown on leases will all be new. So it’s worthwhile to re-cap rights, obligations and entitlements around rent relief in commercial leases. Whether such a tenant is entitled to any rent relief from a landlord is not straight forward and will depend on the contractual terms of the lease. The Government did not introduce any new or amended legislation to address the issue. The Auckland District Law Society’s Deed of Lease Sixth Edition (ADLS lease) is frequently used for commercial leases. We provide some guidance below on the common ADLS form of lease. Following the Christchurch earthquakes, the ADLS lease was updated to include provisions for where a tenant could not have access to their premises where there is an emergency. An epidemic is included as an emergency under the current ADLS lease’s no access provisions. A tenant under this form of lease will be entitled to a rent and outgoings reduction if it is unable to gain access to its premises to fully conduct its business during the lockdown. The rent and

outgoings reduction will be a ‘fair proportion’. What is a ‘fair proportion’ will depend on the specific circumstances of both tenant and landlord and the extent to which it is unable to fully conduct its business. While a tenant won’t have to pay full rent, it is unlikely that a full abatement of rent and outgoings is ‘fair’, for both landlord and tenant. A tenant still has exclusive possession of the premises (and continuing rights to return to the premises when the lockdown ends), may have equipment stored there during the lockdown or other systems (such as servers) within the premises, which they can use to work or operate outside the premises, and a landlord may have no insurance cover for the lost/reduced rent and may still have to meet costs of finance for the premises. We encourage landlords and tenants to reach a commercial resolution. Following the 2020 lockdown, we saw many situations where tenants could not occupy premises. In many of these situations, it was agreed that 50% of the rent and outgoings would cease to be payable (which seemed a fair compromise for both parties). However, because of the nuances, we recommend landlords and tenants seek legal advice as to what a fair proportion reduction might be depending on their specific circumstances. Earlier editions of the ADLS lease (fifth edition or earlier) are unlikely to contain the ‘no access’ provisions of the current edition. As such, tenants are not contractually entitled to a

reduction in rent. Landlords and tenants may negotiate rent relief but there is likely no contractual mechanism to do so. Leases negotiated and created after the 2020 lockdown may also contain additional terms, which alter the general rent relief provisions (often limiting rent relief or specifying what factors must be taken into account when assessing what is a ‘fair proportion’ of rent relief) speciﬁcally address. The circumstances of each landlord and tenant are different and we recommend you seek further advice on your rights or obligations under your form of lease. BIKE RIDING TIPS FOR LOCKDOWN Road Positioning! This is a subject that sometimes attracts negative discussion and is often misunderstood by cyclists and motorists alike. Most cyclists ride on a road at some stage, so here is a brief summary: They are entitled to use the lane, as they are also road users. The information is from the Waka Kotahi (NZTA) National Cycle Skills Programme - BikeReady. This is current and up to date information and is a great programme, www.bikeready.govt.nz Essentially when you are 'just riding along' a road, then you should attempt to be approximately 1 metre out from the side of the road. 1. This places the rider in a more visible position and helps to create predictability, ie: a driver can see what you are doing and predict your movements. 2. To stay away from rubbish such as glass, objects thrown to the side of the road, poor surfaces/edges and potholes, which can cause all manner of issues for cyclists. 3. Creates a better position to manoeuvre from. 4. The 1 metre guideline can obviously change depending on road conditions, however, you are considered a 'road user' and as such, have a right to be there. In some circumstances, you may wish to 'take the lane'. You could do this when approaching

intersections where you may wish to travel straight through or turn right, or where you need to manoeuvre to a safer position to prevent being 'squeezed' by traffic. The 1 metre guideline also applies when you are passing parked vehicles. When conditions allow you should try to stay around 1 metre, or a car's door width, out from the vehicle. You should also be scanning the line of parked vehicles to predict people opening doors, starting off without looking and other hazards you may encounter. So, look out for brake lights, indicators, wheels turned out, exhaust smoke and anything that could indicate that a driver is about to make a move. Another tip is to try not to weave in and out of parked vehicles, particularly if there is only short distances between them. Stay out and hold your line. Again, this is more predictable

for drivers to assess and lessens the risk to you as a cyclist, trying to get back into the ﬂow of traffic. Ride assertively and defensively! Have fun and enjoy the ride! The only bike riders allowed on footpaths are people delivering newspapers or mail, or children on tricycles or small bicycles (the wheel diameter for children must be less than 355 mm).

The August meeting was held in the Recreation Centre, with two new members being welcomed. The new programme for the next year was also available. The Early Spring Flower competition results were: 1st: Carol Williams 2nd: Georgie Eaves. Caroline Jones showed us how she has preserved foliage with glycerine and water. The colours became rich, last forever and can be sprayed. This was something most of us had never heard of before but we were all really impressed. The guest speaker was Julie Baker from Nourish talking on, ‘Garden Preparation and my Journey to Becoming a Gardener’. She spoke of her inspiration coming from her grandfather and earlier times in England where her sister had a metre square garden and only flowers. Julie came to New Zealand with her husband and lived in a cottage in Greendale where she wanted a garden. She was self-taught and had a vegetable garden, an orchard and made her own compost. For sustainability, she has no sprays and organic worm compost. Julie left us with these words, “Don’t buy food grow it”. Julie is part of the Darfield Community Garden and encouraged us to share there and partake in the Seed Swap. The next meeting will be held on September 21st, 1;30pm, at the Darfield Recreation Centre and will be the Spring Flower Show. New members are always welcome. Lee Stokes.

Level 3 Restrictions Hello fellow road users. Boy what a difference a month makes. Four weeks ago, we were gearing up for spring, which for the workshop means caravans and boats come out of hibernation in preparation for summer. The workshop has just had a new roof and we were looking forward to the warmer weather. Then level 4 hit. We unfortunally had several vehicles in many pieces unable to be completed before we locked up. Thankfully all our customers were very understanding and we can’t wait to get back and ﬁnish them off. Level 3 for us means a lot of restrictions, but we are able to operate. We will have contactless meet and greet at the workshop door and a lot of cleaning. Before we enter your vehicle, we disinfect keys, handles, steering wheel and all other touch points. We also wear a mask and disposable gloves. We can also service and repair anyone’s vehicle, but if you feel unwell please stay at home. Due to Covid, holidays this year are going to be a little different to normal. With overseas travel

now not an option for Christmas holidays, I’m expecting the camping grounds and holiday accommodation to have higher than usual occupancy rates. All this, combined the main tourist roads will be much busier than normal. So, it’s time to start thinking about getting your vehicle ready for the holiday period. Tyres: Check your tyre pressures. When you are down there check the tyre tread, check the full width of the tyre to make sure the tread is even across the whole tyre face. Often tyres wear on the inner edge and the worn area is hard to detect. Also don’t forget to check the spare tyre pressure. Lights: Have a wander around your vehicle and check the lights are all working. Then get a bubble member to check the brake lights. Wipers and washers: It wouldn’t be a kiwi camping trip without a bit of rain. Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition and you have plenty of water in your washer bottle.

Radiator coolant/antifreeze: When the vehicle is dead cold open up the radiator cap. The Coolant should be clear and filled to the top. If it requires more than 200ml/1 cup to top up you may have a leak and you should get it checked. If the coolant looks dirty or rusty it will need to be flushed out and replaced. Oil: It’s the life blood of the engine. It should be replaced with a new oil filter at least every 1015000kms. Check the level of the oil when the vehicle engine is off and parked on a flat level surface. The oil level on the dip stick should be between the min and max marks. Please choose top up oil very carefully as selecting the wrong oil can cause terminal engine damage. If you are unsure about anything related to your vehicle before you head away, book it in for a preholiday check.

To the Editor: I read with no real surprise MP Nicola Grigg's column in the latest Malvern News (27/08/21) about rubbishing mostly in numerical order, the Government's efforts to thwart the Covid Delta variant in our midst. Her story's narrative clearly came across as just another National Party tribal-like mantra, chanting out negativities one after another and as obvious as the nose on your face, subliminally was all about pushing their own political barrow. I suggest that New Zealand is handling this latest pandemic outbreak quite well given our population size and comparing our response efforts and results to all overseas countries attempts in the same situation. With Level 4 Lockdown occurring right across the whole country and the associated inherent effects we all face, surely Nicola Grigg could be a bit more proactive and uplifting towards the people of Darﬁeld and surrounding rural areas when contributing to a community newspaper or is that a bridge too far for her. In conclusion, as history shows, getting on the blame and shame merry-go-round serves no real purpose at all in difficult times like these. John Knox, Darfield. To the Editor: A large part of my job as an electoral MP is to help people, to advocate on their behalf and to navigate the public sector to connect them with whatever support, representation or services they may need. Given the requests for help in the past week or so, it is patently clear many people cannot cope with yoyo-ing in and out of severe lockdowns anymore. It is detrimentally impacting their businesses, their families, their children’s education, their social connections, their way of life and their welfare. This could have been avoided with a better vaccine rollout plan. The key role of the Opposition is to prosecute the Government’s actions and decisions and hold it to account for its failings. There have been many failings in its response to the Covid pandemic. However, as an opposition, we do also put forward constructive, alternative ideas which I outlined in my editorial and it would appear, this reader has overlooked. It is absolutely critical the Government improve its performance to mitigate the economic and social damage to communities like Darﬁeld and the wider Malvern area and I will never shy away from demanding accountability. To the Editor: The Canterbury Mayoral Forum has signalled to Minister Mahuta of their serious concerns on behalf of ratepayers, of the proposed water reforms and the Government acquisition of ratepayer assets. The Minister’s response was to accuse the regional mayors of politicking, rather than accepting that the democratically elected mayors are simply reflecting the concerns of their ratepayers. The Government claims by 2051 annual cost of water services for Selwyn will be $1,640 down from the projected $3,480. Their data modelling horizon requires hugely optimistic assumptions on any new entity rates and will presumably be based on achieving new capital works reducing running costs, while loading assumptions on future Selwyn rates. Too many unknown variables and assumptions so figures are not credible and cannot be believed. Under the current democratic system, ratepayers have the choice of managing the cost of key water infrastructure, by deferring or setting aside the nice to have things, via the 10 year planning process. If the Minister was serious about resolving the water issues with poorly performing Councils, she should simply advance them the money now to fix their issues rather than spend multi-millions setting new entities that will end up sucking the life out of ratepayers. We were also tested us on speed and agility and participated in workshops on various topics, including nutrition and wellbeing,” Tyler commented enthusiastically. After the camp and trial, sixteen players were picked to form the New Zealand team. There were six Canterbury players in total selected for the three Under 18 teams, three males and three females. One of those selected was previous Kirwee resident Tom Ruwhiu, who now attends St Andrews College. Tyler now has to attend training camps in October and January in the North Island, where all the boys come together to practice as a team. “I also go to the gym or the domain a few times a week to work on my fitness and basic skills,” Tyler added.

Tyler also plays in the 1st XV for St Thomas, and during the season they train six times a week which keeps him extremely fit and the upcoming touch season will see Tyler play 3-5 times a week. “I am very grateful for this opportunity to be able to represent my country and it has always been a dream to sing the national anthem and do a haka for a New Zealand team no matter the sport,” Tyler concluded proudly. Tyler’s parents Mel and Michael

said, “We are just so proud of his achievements. This has been a dream come true for Tyler and we are so happy it's come true for him. Seeing how hard he works behind the scenes each week to keep fit and preserves in perfecting what his coaches teach him, makes all those years of driving him all around Canterbury worthwhile. He has made a great bunch of mates who are like-minded and keep each other on track, all with the same end goal. We are so proud of him.”

MEMORIAL HALL TURNS 100 The Springston South (Wakaipa) Soldiers Memorial Hall turns 100 this year. Opened in 1921, it was built as a memorial to those who served in the 'Great War'. Over the decades, the Hall has been at the centre of district social life, especially during WW2 when local people were very active in supporting those who were serving, including those who were suffering hardship as a Prisoner of War (POWs). The Hall has weathered the last 100 years well, in fact, repairs after the 2010 Canterbury earthquake have modernised the amenities,

improving its value as a totally community-owned and operated asset. The Hall Committee has organised a ‘Big Celebration Weekend’ on September 17th - 19th, (subject to Covid Levels) to celebrate the Hall Centenary in style. On Friday, there is a ‘Meet and Greet’ evening for current and former residents of the district to get together and socialise. On Saturday, there will be an opportunity (for those that have any) to let their hair down with a dance and supper, 'Celebrating the Decades'. A live 5-piece dance band will provide the

Malvern Community Board Meeting in Darﬁeld, Monday, August 23rd, 2021 The Board meeting was held by Zoom with the Council’s Group Manager – Property in attendance to provide information. ♦ The Board had previously noted their views on changes to Ward boundaries and numbers of Councillors. This has now been discussed by Council and Selwyn residents will be asked about proposed changes to how they are represented at the next local elections. Please put forward your views to Council when submissions open. ♦ The Council has agreed to put forward a proposal to retain four Wards, but change the existing Ward boundaries to the Ellesmere, Malvern, Rolleston and Springs Wards. The Council is also proposing to reduce the number of councillors to ten. It is proposed that the Malvern Ward will once again include West Melton. Consultation on the proposal will run from Friday, September 3rd to Monday, October 4th. The Board has agreed to resume the community visits to localities around Malvern where residents can raise issues in their community.

The ﬁrst visits will be on Sunday, October 10th to Castle Hill in the morning and Arthur’s Pass in the afternoon. These visits have been very successful and Council staff also attend to give instant answers where possible or provide written answers at a later date.
