Arlen Albon turned three on Monday, August 23rd, and was a little sad that due to lockdown he couldn’t spend his birthday with family and friends. Arlen’s mum (Amy), used Facebook to help make the lockdown birthday a memorable one. ”A friend of mine said her little girl had to spend her fifth birthday in lockdown last year and they asked people to pop over and put a balloon at their gate. I thought it was a cool idea to do for Arlen! So I popped a message up on the Springfield Community Hub Facebook page, asking for people to pop a balloon on the fence if they were walking past on Monday. “We had such an amazing response from the community”, said Amy. Throughout the day Arlen and his brother Oakley (four years old) kept an eye out for new balloons being added! “Watching the pure joy and surprise of seeing each balloon and discovering that there were even some presents being left at

Here we go again. The spectre of the Delta variant that has lurked for much of this year has appeared and we have been plunged, once again, into a Level 4 Lockdown. With just 20 per cent of the New Zealand population vaccinated, one might argue this was always going to happen. And while we all knuckle down, comply and get on with it for the greater good, serious questions need to be asked of the Government as to whether it has done everything humanely possible to prevent this from happening. The answer, simply, is no it has not. We do not have a triage system at the border, we do not have rapid antigen testing, we bring people in from highly infectious nations, lump them all into a bus together, drive them into the middle of our most populous cities, and put them into a hotel to isolate together for two weeks, then we release them into the public. New Zealand’s vaccination rollout is shamefully and negligently slow. We were told we would be at the front of the queue for vaccination, but we are the slowest in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 120th in the world, and have been from the start. The Government’s complacency and inability to ensure supply

and delivery of the vaccine has made us all sitting ducks; completely vulnerable to the Delta variant when it inevitably got into the community. First, the Government was slow to sign an advance purchase agreement with Pfizer, meaning New Zealand was the 29th slowest out of the 38 countries in the OECD to get in line. Second, it was slow to gain approval for the Pfizer vaccine for use in New Zealand. It wasn’t approved here until February 3rd, 2021. Third, New Zealand’s first purchase order was only raised on January 29th this year. Other countries had administered tens of millions of doses by that point. Fourth, there’s been the refusal to offer any incentive payments for early delivery. Adding to the list of failures, Australia ramped up its vaccine programme in Lockdown but now that we are in Lockdown, vaccinations were paused for 48 hours. How many tens of thousands of doses will that set us back by? National has put forward a range of constructive suggestions for how to speed up the vaccine rollout and we hope the Government considers them. We argue that we need an ambitious target based on sophisticated modelling. A target would encourage uptake by mobilising the team of five

million to come together behind a common goal. It would focus the system on achieving that target and hold the Government to account for reaching it, or not reaching it. Vaccinations in schools should occur before the school year ends, the Government should start the planning for this. Alongside public health experts, we have been calling for months for the rollout of rapid antigen testing and other innovative technologies at our border but the Government is only just considering it now, with Delta already spreading in our communities. Finally, the need to be getting on with purpose-built quarantine facilities seems blatantly obvious. Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) in some form will be with us for years particularly for passengers from high-risk countries and a purpose-built facility would be a worthwhile investment in the sake of the national interest. MESSAGE FROM SAM BROUGHTON As Dr Bloomfield said, “It wasn’t a case of if and more a case of when.” And here we are again in a Lockdown that seems a little different to when we were at level four last time. Having been here before. we know what to expect and again New Zealand has the advantage of understanding what has worked and what has not in other parts of the world that have experienced the Delta variant. I totally support Cabinet’s decision to go hard and early. We are sadly seeing across the ditch what could happen if we don’t nip this in the bud now. That doesn’t take away from the fact that many of our businesses have now lost some of the ground they have made up over the past year. Our council continues to partner with the Ministry of Social Development

and the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce, please contact them for free advice and support if you need it. Our council had prepared should Lockdown be declared and those plans have been enacted over the last 10 days, all your essential services are still up and running. We have switched to a predominantly phone-based operation - doing phone consultations, or triage for every patient in the first instance. Phone consultations will incur the same charges as an office visit, but if, having done a phone triage assessment, it is clear that you need to see a GP, then a normal GP consult can be arranged in Darfield, at no extra cost. WE ASK THAT YOU DO NOT TURN UP TO THE MEDICAL CENTRE WITHOUT PHONING FIRST, OR HAVE SPOKEN TO A DOCTOR - YOU WILL NOT BE SEEN.

We are restricting face-to-face consultations to those that are absolutely essential, we will still be able to do repeat prescriptions, ACC, and WINZ forms, but using telephone consultations only. COVID 19 AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY As I write, I am aware that this is a rapidly evolving scenario and it will require us to be vigilant and keep abreast of all the frequent updates and information shared from official sources. Spread of Covid will determine Lockdown Levels. Some things will not change in the next short while. We all need to wear masks when we are in public spaces, shops, or talking to neighbours, or on public transport. Keep to your “bubble”, make use of the contact tracer app and scan at any place with a QR code displayed at the entrance (this is now required by MoH). Remain safe by maintaining social distancing. Reducing travel reduces exposure/spread risk. Our personal hygiene is also important. Cough or sneeze in to your elbow. Wash your hands frequently with soap, for more than 20 seconds. Make use of hand sanitiser. If you are unwell with Covid symptoms, then plan on self- isolating where possible, stay away from work. With any respiratory illness or Covid symptoms then have a low threshold to get a Covid test from the Doctor or attend a testing facility. Book your Covid vaccination as the eligibility criteria are met. This will protect you against the delta variant to a greater degree. It does not mean that you will not get “the Covid”, but potentially the effect on your health will be less, and less drain on healthcare facilities. Remember you are not being inoculated with the virus, but a protein (mRNA) that your body will try and neutralise, in the process reducing the ability of the virus ( containing that same protein) to infect at a later time. A reaction to the vaccination is possible but this is a side effect, not a reason to withhold receiving both injections. Emergency services will continue to function normally. You will have seen requests from FENZ to avoid lighting fires in the open, so staff are not put at risk of breaking their own bubbles, but are available for emergencies. St John has seen an increase in workload because of the need to protect staff and patients. Staff will be wearing masks and gloves, and may ask you to wear a mask while in their care. You will be asked about potential exposure to Covid, but you will not be denied care, even if you are symptomatic, however levels of protection will increase. Delta does seem to be more contagious than last year’s Covid, it is aerosol spread rather than by droplet. If you are fully vaccinated you are much less likely to get very sick or die, also wearing masks and having good hygiene, reduces the risk of spread to you, or others. Our elders will be more vulnerable to infection. Let’s help keep them more safe. Together we can reduce the risk to the community. Covid is here for a while yet, so let’s try and keep it at bay. INGREDIENTS: • 6-8 frozen hash browns • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 4 rashers bacon or 100g chorizo sausage

METHOD: Preheat oven to 210°C (fan assisted). Lay the frozen Wattie's frozen Hash Browns in a single layer in the base of a 20 cm square baking dish, cutting to fit if necessary. Bake for 15 minutes While the hash browns are cooking, prepare the filling. Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and bacon or chorizo and sauté until the onion is soft and meat is cooked. Add the mushrooms and continue cooking for a further minute. Add the Wattie’s Baked Beans 50% Less Added Sugar and stir while heating. Spoon hot bean mixture over cooked hash browns. Make 4 indentations in the beans and break in eggs. Scatter over grated cheese. Cover dish with foil, making sure it doesn't touch the eggs. Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for a further 10-15 minutes or until the eggs are set to your liking. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

TE HUANUI CLOSED AT LEVEL 4 Te Huanui will remain closed until further notice due to Monday’s announcement that we’re to stay in Alert Level 4 until at least Friday, 27th August. Due to this Lockdown, our planned exhibition ‘Connections’ featuring members of the Selwyn Artists’ Collective is currently on hold. Our primary concern at the moment is keeping the gallery volunteers and visitors safe, so we will be watching the Government's decisions on Alert Levels, and will re-open Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darﬁeld when it is safe to do so. Firefighters will follow Covid protocols when responding to any incident, wearing protective gear to keep themselves and the community safe. “But we also ask people to help keep our firefighters safe by holding off any non-essential outdoor fires - such as burning household rubbish or garden waste. This will stop firefighters from being called out and having to leave their bubbles unnecessarily. “Even if the fire is under control, the smoke often results in 111 calls which mean our firefighters need to deal with an avoidable call and risk exposure to Covid. “Please be patient with outdoor fires for land management. Hold off applying for a permit for an outdoor fire until the lockdown is over. While we are under Covid Alert Level 4 we are unable to visit sites to review permit applications. "We are understandingly

reluctant to put the public and our people at risk to conduct inspections and there will be cases where we cannot grant permits at this time. “Help us by doing your bit to minimise the risk of fire, and the number of avoidable call outs for our first responders. “If you’ve lit a fire recently, check and make sure that it is completely out. Dig down into the fire sites, rake them out and pour water on them. If strong winds are forecast, this can cause fires that appeared extinguished to rekindle and flare up again. “While working from home, make sure you’re not overloading multiplugs at your work stations and keep everything one metre from the heater. “We’ve done this before, we can do it again. Stay safe Aotearoa,” Kerry concluded.

SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS It’s a big word for a big celebration and this year sees four well known Canterbury rural schools teaching their pupils how to pronounce the word ‘sesquicentennial’. Swannanoa, West Melton and Weedons schools will all mark their 150th anniversaries over Labour Weekend. Hororata has already celebrated theirs earlier this year, in March. So why the sudden popularity in sesquicentennial? An explanation can be found in a Canterbury University thesis titled ‘The Heart of The Village’ by A.M.F. Davies. It explored the development and role of schools throughout Canterbury. Key findings showed that in 1863 school attendance throughout the district was very low, driving public demand for more action in establishing schools. Given the transport limitations of the times, the solution came in developing lots of smaller ‘local’ schools. So rapid was the growth that in only the four years from 1870 to

1874 the number of schools in Canterbury more than doubled from 20 to more than 50. In a time before the teachers’ colleges were established, the rapid growth flowed on to other challenges, with many of the new schools having to be staffed with teachers recruited from overseas. The schools all started with small rolls, numbers at those marking their 150th jubilees ranged between 34 (Hororata) and 53 (Weedons). Those numbers grew slowly and steadily over the next 140 or so years. The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes saw some dramatic shifts in population demographics, with the subsequent subdivision boom producing rapid growth in many smaller rural communities outside Christchurch. As a consequence what were once small rural schools are now dealing with substantial student numbers; Hororata 75, Swannanoa 340, Weedons 165 and West Melton 435.

The three schools celebrating at Labour Weekend are hoping the 150th Anniversaries will bring their local communities together, with as many past and current pupils and teachers attending as possible. All three schools have a wide range of activities planned along with traditional open days, including photos, gatherings and cake cuttings. Weedons School will also hold a tree planting, a time capsule and an evening Mix and Mingle at Melton Estate and a dinner with guest speakers at Weedons Country Club. West Melton School will also have a grand Evening Ball at the West Melton Hall, followed by a Family Fun Day at the Domain. All schools would love to see pupils, staff and community members (past and present) participate in these events.

Unfortunately, the 2021 season didn’t hit the targets that the Kirwee Rugby Football Club and senior players had planned for. With two senior teams, Division 2 and Division 3, decent pre-season form and new players to the Club, things were looking positive. A first up-close loss to Diamond Harbour for the Division 2 side, unfortunately set the scene for the season, with numerous injuries curtailing some players efforts and the loss of keys players in certain positions. With players having to play out of position, bench warmers now in the starting XV, a lack of depth in certain areas, it made for a tough season. The effort and leadership at the front from certain senior players can never be questioned. The likes of Matt Colley, Andrew Walker and Adam Dalley never gave up whilst captain Liam O’Callaghan was a leader on and off the field, trying his best and doing everything he could. A big thanks to coach Andy Pearce, Managers Scott German and Jock Feast as well as fitness trainer Dave Te Kapa, for your time during the year. The efforts from certain Division 3 players to fill the void in the Division 2 team was also most appreciated. The Division 3 season was enjoyable on and off the field as always. Great halftime speeches by coach Murray Cridge inspired the lads to decent performances each game. With a bit more mongrel and attitude, the team can move ahead. Often those values are hard to install in people, but the core of the group

never gave up. Heads up lads, Rome wasn’t built in a day! We have a bloody strong Club and culture, loyal supporters and sponsors through thick and thin and a great bond that other clubs can only aspire to. Yes, other clubs season has been more favourable, but off the field, we are winners in all the other areas. With the newly installed floodlights, the Kirwee Reserve redevelopment in full swing, a great junior rugby set up, Thursday night barbeque after training, great fields and decent sized changing sheds and most importantly a welcoming and inviting clubrooms, Kirwee Rugby Club is well set up. With the recruitment of new players to add to the core, 2022 can be a step forward in the right direction on the field. The Club as always is grateful to our sponsors, supporters, partners/ wives and the work that goes on behind the scenes by the

THE GREAT INDOORS On Sunday, August 22nd, Scouts Aotearoa launched ‘The Great Indoors’, a website where families looking for activities for their young people during the Level 4 lockdown can get ideas. The programme is free and open to all New Zealand families. Scouts Aotearoa Programme Manager John Williams said, “With the whole country going into Level 4 at such short notice, we thought in the best tradition of Scouts, we can help. Over the past few days, we've pulled together a collection of activities and built 'The Great Indoors' website. 'The Great Indoors' is based on our very successful 'Scouting from Home' programme, that ran during the six-week Lockdown, in 2020.” “There is something on the website for all ages and abilities. It's free and anyone with young people at home who need something to do, can visit the website and download the activities,” John concluded. There are twelve activities available, but people can sign up to receive twenty four further free activities. This is one activity a day, for twenty fours days, delivered via email and accompanied by a handpicked dad joke! Recently, an Intermediate student from TM Dance World, Georgie Prosser, competed in the Dance NZ Made Interschool competition, which was held at Christchurch recently. Georgie did incredibly well, placing third with her self-choreographed solo, a fantastic result! She also competed in troupes with other dancers from her school, who placed second and will travel to Nationals later in the year. Georgie also choreographed a trio which was performed by other students from the school, they were also rewarded with a second placing. To top off an already very successful day, Georgie was given an exciting opportunity... Earlier in the year she attended a Dance NZ Made Workshop, for which she was rewarded with a golden ticket for her work. This ticket allows her to compete in the finals with other winners from around the country, in Palmerston North, later in the year. Congratulations to all dancers who competed, all around there were some fantastic results. Well done Georgie for your fantastic achievements!

I have been informed that the council staff did not consult with the township committee, the community board or the councillors regarding the replacement of this fence. What is the point of having township committees, community boards or councillors if decisions are made without any consultation or consent. This appears to be that bureaucracy is working to the best of their advantage. I request a reply.

So If you would like to sow and grow some seedlings over lockdown for the Seedling Swap, we will get the seeds to you.

Here's how it will work: Choose one or two seed packets from the list below that you would like to grow (while stocks last. Please sow the seeds ASAP after you receive them. They need as much time as possible to grow into good sized seedlings before the Seedling Swap on the 9th October. We are unable to provide you with pots/punnets or potting mix. If you do not have a stash of pots or punnets in your shed, or some potting mix, here are some options: For pots or punnets: Put drainage holes in the bottom of yoghurt pottles, margarine containers, ice cream containers, or cut off the bottom of 2ltr milk bottles. Have a look in your recycle bin and start putting aside containers that might work. For potting up your seedlings so you can bring them to the Seedling Swap you will need 6-8 containers that will ﬁt 6 seedlings (e.g. 6-8 margarine containers). For potting mix: Email if you would like instructions for making your own seed raising mix from your own compost. If you don’t have compost, you can dig some good soil from your garden to use as a potting mix. Your direct sown seeds grow ﬁne in your garden soil, so I’m sure your potted seedlings will too! If you have any questions, please let us know. Enjoy these lockdown days tending and preparing your garden in anticipation of an abundant season. You will not need to travel to the supermarket for expensive fresh food, and risk the health of your household, when your food is in your own garden.
