On Sunday, August 8th we saw the first snow of the season on the Canterbury Plains. It turned bitterly cold after a beautiful winters day on Saturday. Unfortunately, many events had to be postponed or cancelled. Some locals were delighted to see the white stuff arrive, many children young and old loved having the opportunity to make snowmen.

The local area looked like a winter wonderland and it was a wee reminder that winter isn’t over yet!

SHOW DEDICATED IN MEMORY Kirwee Players opened on Friday, August 6th, with West Side Story, a Show about the differences a community faces and the consequently troubled love affairs, feuds and losses.

Kirwee Players have experienced all of these, especially loss. Recently our Patroness and life member, Patricia Dean Henderson (JP) passed away, after a short battle with an aggressive cancer. In honour of Patricia’s memory, the Show was dedicated to her and other members who have passed away since our last show.

In recognition of Patricia’s forty three years of involvement with Kirwee Players, we want to acknowledge the work she did tirelessly over the years, to ensure the continued success of the Players. She always went the extra mile, be it as a performer, make-up artist or as a very active member of the committee.

Nothing was ever too much trouble for Patricia and she did it all with a smile. A

percentage of funds from each programme sold will be sent to the Friends of Darfield Hospital Charitable Trust, as Patricia was an instigator and long-serving, active committee member, including once being Chairperson of the Friends of

Darfield Hospital too.

A very kind, generous and upstanding lady, she is deeply missed and we want to thank her family for sharing her with us.

DARFIELD TOY LIBRARY In every kingdom, there is a battle. Here in Sheffield, I reign over a small 900sqm kingdom and my battle is against ‘stuff’.

I regularly rage around our house fuming over global issues of consumerism and social injustices, whilst cramming any unsuspecting objects that cross my path into a paper bag. These bags get donated. Now my children are one and two years of age, the bags are filled with single booties, broken toys and anything I deem unworthy. All while they nap ‘peacefully’ without any idea that their Mother is throwing away their favourite egg carton and stinky bath toys.

Toys will engulf every corner of your home, I wonder if perhaps that is their agenda. World domination by destroying one sane parent at a time. Some good soul long ago saw through the sweet exterior of the ‘toy’ and came to every parent’s aid.

They started the Toy Library right here in Darfield, a small battle station of volunteers, saying “enough of this madness, there is a better way!”

Come on down every fortnight and borrow the toys you want.

Get the same ones out, again and again, or mix it up every week, they don't mind. Do extensive research before Christmas so you only buy what your children actually play with again and again. Challenge your child’s development, hide toys in the cupboard and pull them out at that critical moment. We are constantly seeking funding to expand and upgrade our toys.

SHEFFIELD COMMUNITY DINNER On Saturday, August 7th, approximately forty five locals attended the free Selwyn District Council (SDC) ‘Dinners Of Selwyn’ event which was held at the Sheffield Community Hall. The event was organised by local, AnnAnn- Maree Ozanne and her recently formed Sheffield Waddington Community Group alongside the SDC. The dinners are designed for people that; • are new to living in Selwyn,

want to meet new people, love to try new foods and experience other cultures.

Dinners of Selwyn is about bringing our wonderful community together to celebrate the diversity of our district while enjoying great food and making new friends through the language of sharing a delicious meal together.

The evening was a success with a large variety of scrumptious food bought along by those who • •

Numerous new friends were made and it was also a fantastic opportunity to catch up with other locals as well.

Canterbury charitable trust Community Energy Action (CEA) continues to offer free insulation for the foreseeable future, to all eligible owneroccupiers including those in the Selwyn area.

This is thanks to a continuation of the Governments Warmer Kiwi Homes (WKH) programme providing an 80% subsidy.

Funders including Orion, Rate Foundation and CEA are topping that up to 100%, for occupants in the Selwyn district.

“Insulation and heating will keep homes warmer and those living in them healthier. It will not just save energy, it will save on health costs too,” said CEA’s Chief Executive Caroline Shone who has lived in Selwyn for over fourteen years.

Dyanne took up the free insulation offer and has noticed a real difference after having her house insulated by CEA. “I used to pay $78 a fortnight on smooth pay, now I am paying only $49 and I am still in credit over $400!”, said Dyanne as she showed Caroline the impact

on her power bill since her home was insulated early last year and it is not just the bill that has changed.

“The house is much warmer now. Before I didn’t put the heat pump on because it was too expensive, so I couldn’t heat the house”, Dyanne commented.

The CEA assessor who checked Dyanne’s property looked in the ceiling and told her that only part of the house was insulated.

After the house was properly insulated, heating the house was much more affordable for her.

“I am not scared to use the heat pump anymore!” Dyanne laughed during her conversation with Caroline.

CEA has been part of the Government programme since before the nationwide roll-out of Government subsidies in 2009.

In the twenty seven years the Trust has been operating, it has installed insulation in more than 30,000 homes.

SELWYN MP UPDATE You may have seen an ad running on television recently, paid for by you, purporting that the Government will provide you cleaner water than your council.

It’s a Government campaign to promote its ‘Three Waters’ proposal, which would see the delivery of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services removed from councils and handed to four regional water entities.

Now, I agree, there is a case for change. In parts of the country, aging water infrastructure needs significant investment. In places like Auckland and Wellington, discharges and overflows pollute the environment and breach safety standards, putting public health at risk.

Positive steps have been taken since the inquiry into the Havelock North gastroenteritis outbreak, including the formation of a new water regulator, Taumata Arowai, a body dedicated to enforcing drinking water standards.

But the model of four water entities comes with several issues that need to be addressed, which is why many councils are yet to indicate whether they’ll

opt-in or out, including here in Selwyn.

The touted financial benefits and cost savings are unclear and haven’t been properly explained to the public.

The reforms rely on scale benefits, but what real benefits will be created? Where is the benefit in an entity that would merge water assets in Gisborne and Blenheim? How are water treatment plants in those towns supposed to be networked across the Cook Strait?

The complex entities will erode local control rather than enhance it. What makes for better accountability, water services delivered by an elected council, or by a bloated bureaucracy with at least five layers of management and appointed governors? It’s hard to see how residents of Darfield, Rolleston or Leeston will get more accountability and control from a water entity spanning most of the South Island, from Westport to Bluff.

Labour is becoming increasingly desperate to impose a predetermined solution at any cost, whether that means scaring, bribing or forcing communities

to the table.

So far, it has tried a negative ad campaign and a $2.5 billion inducement to get councils on board. If those fail, their last resort will inevitably be making the reforms compulsory and forcing councils to surrender control of their water assets.

These reforms come at a time of sweeping change for councils that will redefine their role into the future.

National’s position is clear, change must be led by communities, not mandated by the Beehive.

We will continue to oppose Labour’s centralisation and control agenda and we will fight for communities to keep their voice.

VALUE OF RURAL LAND IN THE FACE OF DEVELOPMENT PRESSURES

There are increasing obligations on Councils to provide for urban growth under the 2020 National Policy Statement on Urban Development and increasing compliance pressures on farming to meet environmental obligations around freshwater.

Added to this is a demand for rural residential lifestyle allotments in the idyllic rural environment. These pressures are making rural productive land look more appealing for subdivision and development for urban living. This raises the question for the community to consider, what happens if we do subdivide our rural zones?

Development generates the need for specific infrastructure, which carries with it costs for both installation and maintenance. Infrastructure for water supply, stormwater disposal and wastewater disposal are expensive and are required to effectively service any residential development.

The extension of existing services or the establishment of new infrastructure takes up space and increases the costs of construction, making residential development more expensive. If infrastructure is then vested with

the Council, it becomes the Council’s responsibility to maintain and upgrade such infrastructure into the future and is funded through rates.

If development is in the form of rural residential sections, in the order of half a hectare or one hectare developments, then the only practical service solution is on-site individual wastewater disposal instead of sewer reticulation. This generates potential cumulative effects on groundwater quality which is increasingly considered unacceptable. Rural residential sites also have little practical productive land use. Although smaller sites can be productively used, most landowners don’t make the most of these spaces due to other life pressures and these spaces become more like hobby farms.

The loss of rural land to urban growth has the potential to fragment this land, allowing more people to reside close to the remaining rural activities.

Smaller land holdings tend to not produce the same levels of product (meat, veggies, fruit or dairy products) as larger land holdings. This makes smaller landholdings generally less productive than larger farms.

The minimum allotment size in

many rural zones is around 20 – 30 ha to ensure land holdings support economic rural use and has been carried over from old town and country planning provisions from before the 1991 Resource Management Act (RMA), which sought to ensure subdivision demonstrated an economic use of new allotments.

Another effect of urban development close to existing rural activities is the concept of reverse sensitivity, where new urban landowners are not accustomed to the lawful noise, dust, or smell associated with rural activities. This often results in increased complaints and increased pressure for the farming activities to either alter the way operations are undertaken, or to move further away from the new residential activities.

So, when considering if further expansion of our urban environments into rural land is appropriate, it is necessary to consider the costs of development to ensure only appropriate locations are developed, and to take a good look into what potential effect this will have on the balance of productive rural land.

North Canterbury Rural Support Trust held their Hororata Pie Day at the Hororata Village Bar and Café on Friday, August 6th.

The Trust is a charitable trust that runs information and social events within Banks Peninsula, Hurunui, Selwyn and Waimakariri districts throughout the year.

These events are the perfect chance for people to join in and get off-farm with their family, or workers while providing an opportunity for them to connect with their community.

“A huge thank you to Zanthe and Sandra for allowing us to hold the Pie Day at their Café,” said Jenny CationsCations -Brown, Brown Adverse Events Coordinator for North Canterbury Rural Support Trust.

The Trust is set up to assist rural

individuals and their families get back on their feet and can give assistance to people facing challenging circumstances.

Those that attended were happy to chat and lots of laughter was heard. Not all the regular farmers could attend due to calving and lambing, however, they meet regularly on a Friday evening at the Hororata Village Bar and Cafe, so a few vouchers were put

towards hot chips, which was really appreciated.

THE CONVERSATION Former Darfield local, Cyril Meyer is achieving results with his recent short film ‘The Conversation’, directed by Robbie Ryde, Ryde which has just screened at the Colorado International Activism Film Festival.

In the film, Cyril plays the lead role of Darren, who is driving through an isolated country Victorian road, when he suddenly becomes stranded with no working car and phone. Alone and cold, Darren begins walking on, when a car comes driving along behind him whom he waves down. Driving the car is Talisha, played by Georgia Vengtasamy, Vengtasamy a beautiful African American woman who offers Darren a lift to the next town.

During the car ride the two distant strangers slowly open up to each other, showing growth and learning is not always comfortable, but patience, love and kindness is vital in this process.

The film was inspired by a TED (technology, entertainment, design) Talk by Daryl Davis, Davis “Ignorance breeds fear, fear breeds hatred, hatred breeds anger, anger breeds destruction.

If we can eliminate ignorance

through education and exposure, the chain of destruction breaks.”

“I was inspired by what Daryl Davis said, and was stoked to have the opportunity to portray a character who was discovering this change in his own beliefs.

The news of the film’s selection as a semi-finalist in this film festival is an awesome result and I’m proud of all the passionate cast and crew involved. It’s great that more people are getting the chance to see this film!” commented Cyril.

This is the second film festival selection for the film, with ‘The Conversation’ screening earlier in the year, in Gold Coast’s inaugural ‘Short+Sweet Film Festival’ as a finalist and was also nominated for Best Film.

Cyril has recently relocated to Los Angeles, California, after winning the chance to apply for a green card in the Diversity Visa Lottery and completing the lengthy process in late June.

“I applied for the green card lottery (diversity visa lottery) for free in October 2019 and found out in June 2020 that I was selected for further processing. It then took twelve further months of processing and waiting for my selection

number to come up and have it all finalised. Winning this opportunity is a dream come true, since I was in high school and dreaming of a career as an actor. I knew I wanted to go to LA and it still hasn’t completely sunk in that I’m actually here! I’m really lucky to already have a core community of friends here who’ve helped make my relocation as easy as it can be, made more difficult due to Covid. Now that I’m here, I’m slowly getting myself set up and reacquainted with the city (once I finish isolation), I’m excited to see where this journey I’m on takes me!” Cyril concluded proudly.

Ten year old, West Melton netballer Luci Floyd got a taste of the action when she met the superstars of netball, on centre court at Christchurch Arena, before the Tactix vs Mystics ANZ Premiership game, on July 25th.

Luci, a West Melton School student, won the chance to meet Captains Jane Watson (Tactix) and Sulu Fitzpatrick (Mystics) and lead the teams onto the court as a part of the ANZ Future Captains programme, alongside family friend twelve year old Caitlin Crofts.

Crofts Luci, who plays for West Melton Netball Club, had a great time high fiving her beloved Tactix, commenting, “They were very tall high fives, I had to reach really high. Jane Watson’s was the best and she also gave me a hug.”

After joining the coin toss and standing side-by-side with the Captains, Luci really wanted to join the game but settled for her courtside seat which felt ‘extra special’. The fast-paced game kept her head spinning.

“We were sitting right next to the Tactix team bench and at one point the ball almost went flying at us, but the umpire caught it,” said Luci.

After watching her favourite team fight until the very end, despite not securing the win, Luci was very impressed with the Tactix game play, especially her favourite player Jane Watson.

As for her own games this season, Luci plans on smashing her own personal best on intercepts, commenting, “I’ve already gotten five in one quarter. Now I want to get ten

intercepts off of the centre pass.”

The workload for Ambulance services throughout Canterbury has had an unprecedented demand in the last few months, beating all records. This has been similar in other parts of the country as well. As far as Darfield workload is concerned, July statistics show a 50% increase over the first six months average. This is sort of expected. Of the sixty jobs, about 75% were medical and of that 30% were breathing problems, 23% were generally sick, 15% were cardiac chest pain and 8% were potential or actual cardiac arrests.

Some of these jobs were outside the greater Darfield area, but equally, there will have been other ambulances here when we were busy or unable to crew a vehicle, so these numbers are indicative only.

The number of chest pains and potential arrests highlights the

importance of locals knowing if there is an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in their local area, how to access it and how it works when it is found.

Many of you will have read a recent news article where an AED was used with apparent good success.

An AED is not designed to start a heart that has stopped. That is what we need to be familiar with CPR for, as it will not shock a stopped heart. Nor will it allow you to shock a heart in a sinus rhythm (normal heartbeat/ rhythm). It will shock a heart that is beating inefficiently, stop the heart and allow it to return to a normal rhythm on its own account (this may take repeated shocks). An AED is just a tool that will be used alongside early recognition, early intervention, CPR, as well as some advanced medical or drug therapy. First Aid courses will teach how all these

skills work together to save a life at risk through some cardiac events.

An AED is safe to use, following good precautions and used properly, you will not get electrocuted, burnt, or hurt in any way and the potential benefit to the patient far outweighs the risk. They ‘speak to you’ giving instructions and prompts that are easy to follow.

AEDs are in most small communities, at a hall, sports club, dentist, doctor, bakery or other building. They are also in fire engines, police cars, ambulances and some other community vehicles. Ask around and find out where the one nearest to you might be, and whether it is accessible 24/7.

On a bitterly cold winter morning a husband and wife in Darfield were listening to the radio during breakfast.

They heard the announcer say, "We are going to have 20 to 25cm of snow today.

You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through."

So the wife went out and moved her car.

A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said,"We are expecting 25 to 30cm of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through."

So the wife went out and moved her car again.

The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 30 to 35cm of snow today. You must park...." Then the electric power went out! The wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do! Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow ploughs can get through?"

Then with the love and understanding in his voice, that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied, "Love, why don't you just leave the car in the garage this time?"
