It was my privilege to be offered the opportunity to walk part of the way with Temel Atacocugu on his walk for peace on March 15th.

Temel was shot nine times during the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks. Exactly three years to the hour, Temel returned to the same spot at the Al Noor mosque marking the end of a gruelling 360km walk from Dunedin. His walk traced the route of the attacker from Dunedin to Christchurch, with

the aim of reclaiming the gunman’s route in the name of peace.

The final leg of the walk started in Rolleston, where I linked up with Temel and his support team at 7am to start the 25km route via Templeton, Hornby and Riccarton to Deans Ave. Over the six hours of walking, I had plenty of time to talk with Temel and understand a little more about his motivations. He was keen to use his experience to influence good in New

I appreciated the narrative about his walk at a time when much of the news in the media is tough and sad. The more we spoke the more I admired him as a hero for positive change, not looking for personal glory but willing to go through personal pain to seek healing for our community.

I have the utmost admiration for Temel. Over the course of fifteen days, he endured personal pain and sickness, which included two nights in hospital. Not only has

his walk raised $75,000 for his charities, he reminded us all that it is peace, forgiveness and love that binds us together in the face of atrocities.

NEW UC CHANCELLOR Former MP Amy Adams has been appointed the new chancellor of the University of Canterbury (UC).

Amy is a former UC student, having graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours.

Her legal career included becoming a partner at the Christchurch law firm Mortlock McCormack, and in November 2008 she was elected as MP for Selwyn. Amy commented, “it was a privilege to serve the Canterbury community.”

“I feel humbled to be appointed to a role where I can use my experience to support students and staff in strengthening our place as a globally recognised, comprehensive, research-intensive university, delivering world-class education,” Amy concluded.

Amy replaces Sue McCormack who had held the role since 2019.

As chancellor, Amy will sit on UC’s council and committees.

Vice-chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey said, “she was delighted to see the role filled by someone who is obviously committed to the local community.”

“I look forward to working alongside Amy as we guide the University in fulfilling its strategic vision, especially as we rapidly approach the 150th anniversary celebrations of the University of Canterbury in 2023,” Cheryl concluded.

Professor Te Maire Tau, Pou Whakarae of the Ngāi Tahu Centre at the University of Canterbury, congratulated Adams on her new appointment.

“We hope she will strengthen our efforts as we continue to work together to advance academic excellence for all our students,” commented Te Maire Tau. Amy held several positions during her time in parliament, including Canterbury Earthquake Recovery associate minister for almost three years.

She hit the headlines in May 2020 when then-National leader Todd Muller named her number three in the party rankings and gave her the Covid-19 recovery shadow portfolio role. She retired from politics in October 2020.

Shayne Te Aika has been named UC’s new pro-chancellor, in a term that begins immediately.

“I will continue to express the desires of iwi and hapū, as well as my own ideas, toward guiding Te Kaunihera o Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury) to make sound decisions toward the learning and educational pursuits of Māori students, while embracing the ambitions of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu,” Shayne said.

WORLD PARA SWIMMING TRIP Swimming New Zealand is proud to have their first international para-swimming team travelling to compete in the World Para Swimming Indianapolis Series event. Classification for the team will have taken place between April 4th - 6th, with the official Series event taking place from April 7th - 9th.

The team is headlined by Tupou

Neiufi, Gold Medallist S8 100 BK from the Tokyo Games. With three other internationally classified athletes Ella Benn (Selwyn), Ieuan Edwards (Selwyn) and Nia Wallace (Coast).

This group of athletes are to have their international classification reviewed ahead of the 2022 World Championships

and Commonwealth Games.

Completing a strong team lineup, is three first time international athletes (Josh Willmer, Lili-Fox Mason and Gaby Smith) who will gain their international classification and gain valuable experience as they continue their growth towards further international competition.

METHVEN SCARECROW TRAIL Fantastic school holiday event There are sponsored prizes for some great ideas for their the most correct entries, as well creations. The scarecrow makers in Methven.

The Methven Scarecrow Trail is a hugely popular and fun family event run in the April school holidays (April 16th - May 1st), suitable for all ages. Being a small group outdoor event it can run safely even during Covid restrictions.

Every year, members of the Methven community build scarecrows to a particular theme and these scarecrows, usually around forty, are scattered around the town for families to find and try to identify the name of the character represented by the different characters.

Families or small groups purchase a Trail Map/Entry form from the Methven iHub Information Centre, with proceeds from the sale of the maps going to a local charity.

The Trail Maps are only $10 for the group, cash only. The organisers recommend one map per 3-4 people, but some families like to buy one each to increase their odds of winning a prize!

The Trail is designed to be an activity that can be done easily by walking the route, with a well -timed stop for lunch, within a day, but some groups prefer to spread it over several days if they can. The organisers love seeing groups of children of all ages, often with parents and/or grandparents for added input, out walking with their maps trying to guess the correct identities of the scarecrows.

The scarecrows are all located within the town boundaries for safe walking but some young children find the distances a bit long unless they use bikes or scooters. Some groups like to walk the route in the central village and then use the car to find the more remote scarecrows if the small children (or adults) are tired.

The theme this year is ‘Characters from Children’s Television Shows’, and the talented scarecrow makers have

range from the talented and artistic, to the enthusiastic and willing which include business owners, families and school or preschool children.

While in Methven for the Trail there are some other great activities to do also, the new Opuke Hot Pools are worth a visit, the Enchanted Forest Walk (to find where the fairies live) and the Piwakawaka Walk (to find fantails) are all great activities for the holidays.

So, mark the dates in your calendar and head to Methven for the Scarecrow Trail.

The Rolleston Men’s Shed attendance has been down lately as members wait as Covid passes through the community, and some also needed to self-isolate.

The Shed recently received bikes and scooters from the Police to refurbish and give to schools or other riders that would really appreciate it. One of the scooters had a name on it, and we put our ‘detective’ on the job. Despite the name not being spelt correctly, the original owner has been located and now has her scooter back. The correct name and phone number have since been engraved on the scooter.

The Shed has in previous years, engraved names and phone numbers on bikes and scooters for Clearview School pupils and this service is still available to any bike or scooter owners.

Another garden shed is being assembled and a range of woodwork projects, including cupboards, chairs and tables, continue to be worked on.

Computers have been offered to Sheds around New Zealand and the Rolleston Men’s Shed, having done numerous installations, has the job of installing systems and

distributing them, as they will not be using Apple or Windows.

The Linux software used is free, reliable and easy to use, but the

Shed provides instructions if needed.

SOLAR POWER

Oakley’s Premium Fresh Vegetables are proud to announce that they have installed a 220kw solar operation to power their main site in Southbridge. This is one of the larger installations in the South Island to date.

The transition to solar will power the operation as they continue to store, wash, pack and dispatch their fresh vegetables across the country.

SELWYN MP UPDATE What a welcome relief the recent news of a lift in restrictions has brought. There’s even, dare I say it, a faint whiff of optimism in the air, a return to normal is almost within reach!

By the time you read this, vaccine passes and scanning requirements will be abolished, outdoor gathering limits will be scrapped and some vaccine mandates will be phased out.

The Government has finally caught up with reality, which is that Omicron has changed the game and the tools that worked against Delta are now putting unjustified limits on people’s lives.

There is very little point in vaccine passes anymore, and it’s good they’re finally being abolished. In my view, the Government should also signal a timeline for abolishing the remaining mandates.

Kiwis have done the right thing, here in Selwyn, 95 percent of us are double vaccinated and over 75 percent of us are boosted, and after two tough years, it’s time to get back to normality and start thinking positively about the future.

Perhaps the most positive thing to look forward to is the reopening of the border. Our

migrant communities will be able to reunite with family, many will be able to get residency after being stuck in a visa limbo for so long, businesses across Canterbury will be able to bring in the critically important staff that they have been starved of, and working holiday-makers will return.

We think the Government needs to pull out all the stops to make NZ an attractive destination for those working holiday-makers, given our massive labour shortages. Global competition for these workers is intense.

Australia is spending millions on aggressive marketing to attract these workers to their shores, while also offering a raft of other incentives like a visa application fee refund, unrestricted work rights and supplementary visas.

If more isn’t urgently done here to attract these workers, our tourism/hospitality businesses will continue to struggle, the fruit won’t get picked, grapes won’t get harvested and shelves won’t get stacked. We think that, at a minimum, we must at least match what Australia is offering, as well as extending our current age category from 30 – 35, and allowing any current Working

Holiday Visa holder to be granted two more extensions to that visa.

Until offshore workers start to trickle back in though, I think it timely to give a huge and heartfelt thank you to all those who’ve had their shoulder to the wheel, keeping this place going these past two years. Selwyn is an incredibly resourceful district, well-serviced by an expansive network of community-minded folk who’ve looked out for those in need of a hand during these tough times.

So, whether you are an employer, teacher, nurse, doctor, aged-care worker, cook, cleaner, tradie, vet or a farmer, whatever your line of work, it’s been folk like you who’ve helped our district come through this thing in better shape than most.

WATER REFORMS Selwyn District Council has reaffirmed it will continue to advocate for quality water services and better outcomes for Selwyn residents, as the Government pushes ahead with their proposed three waters reforms.

At its meeting last week the Council confirmed its determination to advocate as an independent voice for the interests of Selwyn residents and to push for changes to the reforms that better meet local needs.

The Council continues to oppose the direction of the proposed Government reforms and is concerned about their impact on water services for Selwyn residents.

“We accept there needs to be change, however, we don’t agree that the current three waters proposal is the best or only way forward,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton.

“The Government has done a poor job at communicating the need for change in Selwyn, and we publicly expressed our disapproval to them last year.

“We are disappointed at the Government’s disregard for councils and local communities in the way it has run this process so far. We are also frustrated by the poor response over key questions we have raised with Government about the reforms.

“We will continue to be a strong and independent voice speaking out for Selwyn people, to make sure they get the best outcome from these reforms.

The Council’s focus will be on ensuring its concerns are addressed and on shaping the outcome of the reforms so that the district continues to receive excellent water services.

The Council also committed to working constructively with mana whenua to ensure the best possible outcomes for Selwyn.

They will be reviewing the recommendations of the Working Group on Representation, Governance and Accountability of New Water Services Entities and continuing to seek important information that has not yet been answered, to further shape its work.

“Water is the most important

asset for the district and communities need to be able to have a say in the way their services are delivered that takes account of the unique nature of their water supplies.

“In Selwyn, we have over 30 water supplies each with unique challenges. We have invested heavily in water infrastructure and overall we have an excellent service.

“This means when we have individual challenges, such as the complex ones we face at the moment in Springfield, we can work directly with local residents, using our local knowledge, and we are directly accountable to see through the long-term work that is required to address those issues.

“We need to see accountability in the reforms that ensure that Selwyn residents don’t lose that local voice and assurances that our people will see their needs met. That is what we will be working for - for Selwyn residents to get a service that continues to deliver for all of us,” Sam concluded.

course is suitable for teens who are independent, able to communicate clearly and who can travel and attend without a carer. The next course is scheduled for May 10th-17th, 2022. Applications close on Thursday, April 14th, 2022 but will be filled on a first in-first served basis.

Leaps and Bounds Activate is a course for physically disabled youth aged 13-16 years and their parent or caregiver. The next course is October 10th17th, 2022. Applications close on Friday, September 9th,

2022 but will be filled on a first in-first served basis.

Both courses are proudly supported by the Lindsay Foundation and are fully funded excluding transport and medical costs. They are an amazing opportunity for young people to challenge themselves physically and mentally and discover their potential in the outdoors.

WEST MELTON BOWLS Autumn has arrived, and it has brought with it the beginning of the end of the bowling season, and although there has been more rain than usual this summer, it hasn’t disrupted the bowling calendar too much.

The Centre 8’s Competition that was played on Saturday mornings has just concluded on March 26th. Apart from the Finals of the Malvern Fives, the Malvern Championship Competitions have been completed, but West Melton players this year have not had much luck winning a trophy. Bob Burnett came close when he was runner-up to Bob Shorter from Darfield, (formally West Melton) in the Malvern Men’s Singles. Ali Gardiner was also runner-up in the Malvern Women’s Singles. Mary Burke and Ali Gardiner achieved third place in the Malvern Women’s Pairs at Kirwee.

included Bob Burnett, who won the Men’s Open Championship Singles, Peter Thompson the Men’s Under Fives Championship, Mike Leigh and Alastair Wilson the Men’s Club Championship Pairs and in the Women’s Open Pairs Championship Vonnie Clark and Jude Morgan prevailed.

On March 19th, Kirwee Bowling Club challenged West Melton for the Go Between Cup, which is played annually and was donated by Jim Le Compte in 1981. West Melton once again retained the Cup by defeating Kirwee eight games to four.

The final night of Social Bowls was held on March 16th.

The Harcourts Rolleston sponsored Super Pairs Competition, played at the Club on Saturday afternoons, concluded on Saturday, March 12th. Congratulations to Barbara Herrick, Kevin Harris and Delwyn McConnochie who, after ten rounds, were declared the winning team.

The Slipper Trophy, donated to the Club by David and Ana Gooch, was contested on Wednesday, March 9th. The format was target bowls, and the winners were Dennis Herrick and Jeff Mugford.
