Mayor Sam and Temel approaching the outskirts of Christchurch. It was my privilege to be offered the opportunity to walk part of the way with Temel Atacocugu on his walk for peace on March 15th. Temel was shot nine times during the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks. Exactly three years to the hour, Temel returned to the same spot at the Al Noor mosque marking the end of a gruelling 360km walk from Dunedin. His walk traced the route of the attacker from Dunedin to Christchurch, with

the aim of reclaiming the gunman’s route in the name of peace. The final leg of the walk started in Rolleston, where I linked up with Temel and his support team at 7am to start the 25km route via Templeton, Hornby and Riccarton to Deans Ave. Over the six hours of walking, I had plenty of time to talk with Temel and understand a little more about his motivations. his walk raised $75,000 for his charities, he reminded us all that it is peace, forgiveness and love that binds us together in the face of atrocities.
