A level Politics Trip to Parliament and the Supreme Court Our A level Politics trip to London was a brilliant chance to watch real politics and law unfold right in front of us. Seeing the Supreme Court and Parliament in action brought everything from our textbooks into the real world.

Beginning at the Supreme Court, we explored all three courtrooms, learning how hearings actually work: where the justices sit, how barristers present cases and how the public can watch justice being done. The highlight was an interactive case activity where we debated a real legal scenario. It gave us a genuine sense of how judges weigh arguments and reach decisions.

In the afternoon we moved on to Parliament. Here, an assistant to a Reform MP gave an honest, eye-opening account of what life in Westminster is really like, from constant deadlines to the unpredictable nature of political work.

Our tour then took us through the heart of the legislative process.

In Westminster Hall, we learned about the building’s constitutional significance before moving through the Central Lobby and Committee Corridor, seeing exactly where bills are debated,

Standing in the House of Commons chamber was surreal. Seeing where the Prime Minister, Speaker and opposition sit brought PMQs to life! We learned how whips keep party discipline and how backbench MPs can shape policy behind the scenes.

We ended in the House of Lords, focusing on its role as a revising chamber and how peers challenge and refine legislation.

This was a hugely informative experience that deepened our understanding of how laws are made and gave us a new appreciation for the energy and complexity of British politics.

THE MALVERNIAN Seeing is Believing – Lecture by Prof. Schermelleh

Life Skills

Malvern College had the honour of welcoming Professor Schermelleh, along with his wife and son, who visited Malvern to give a talk titled ‘Seeing is Believing’. Born and raised in Munich, Prof. Schermelleh is a big football fan, in fact he played for one of the elementary clubs at the FC Bayern Munich stadium but eventually left to focus on his studies. He studied Biosciences at the local Ludwig Maximilian University then joined the University of Oxford in 2011 as a Micron Senior Research Fellow and Principal Investigator in the Department of Biochemistry. He is an active research leader in the field of super-resolution microscopy and currently serves as the Associate Professor and Academic Director of the Micron Bioimaging Facility at the University of Oxford, a position he was appointed to in 2020.

The talk ‘Seeing is Believing’ covered Prof. Schermelleh’s journey, including his postgraduate work on functional epigenetics and super-resolution imaging, like visualizing DNA methyltransferase activity in living cells (which he and his peers published about in 2005), and becoming a professor of bioimaging in 2024.

All students attended a talk on the importance of diet and gut microbiome and how these affect our mental and physical wellbeing with a quick look at the beauty industry including the use of Botox and fillers.

Exploring Art, Design and Innovation in London This term, Sixth Form pupils from Art and Design visited London for a series of inspiring museum trips. A level Textiles pupils explored the V&A’s Marie Antoinette Style exhibition, seeing original Court dress, jewellery, and contemporary designs by Dior and Vivienne Westwood, while the Design and Technology department visited Design and Disability, learning how inclusive design by Disabled, Deaf, and Neurodivergent creators improves everyday life.

Our Art pupils visited Tate Modern to see the Do Ho Suh - Walk the House exhibition, encountering modern and contemporary works in unusual materials, including Cildo Meireles’ Babel and sculpted plant forms cast in bronze, and reflected on artistic process and creativity.

Across all visits, pupils gained fresh perspectives on design, art, and innovation, leaving inspired and motivated to apply these ideas in their own work.

THE MALVERNIAN National Poetry Honour for Zahra Congratulations to Zahra H, who has been named one of the Top 15 winners in the prestigious Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2025 for their poem ‘Remembrance Day’. Run

by The Poetry Society and funded by The Foyle Foundation, the competition is one of the world’s leading poetry awards for young people aged 11-17, attracting a record 28,344 entries from over 10,900 poets across 135 countries this year. Zahra’s achievement places them among an exceptional group of young writers praised by the judges for their confidence, creativity and intelligence. Zahra has been invited to take part in a week-long residential writing course at the Arvon Centre, with their poem published in the official winners’ anthology in 2026. Exploring the Land of Fire and Ice In the October half term, 16 pupils travelled to Iceland, the land of fire and ice. They were treated to spectacular sights including many glaciers, waterfalls and volcanoes. The content covered was a real extension of the A level, IB and GCSE curriculums and we even managed to catch a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights! It was an amazing experience for all involved and we look forward to planning our next adventure abroad.

THE MALVERNIAN Mace Debating Competition It was a cold night in Worcester for this year’s Mace Debating Competition.

Malvern’s plucky team of three - Justin Q, Amaya F, and Mahmud J valiantly put forward their arguments as to why there should be a tourism tax in popular areas for tourists. They responded forcefully to rebuttal and used every debating tactic at their disposal. Amaya amazingly held her resolve when challenged on details. Mahmud marvellously fought back when the definition was queried. Justin justly dealt with all the questions that were thrown at our team. Yes, we lost. But we learnt. Next time, we will win.

THE MALVERNIAN Music What a term it has been for music at the College! From the first notes struck on the Steinway in Big School to the final carols echoing through the Chapel, the Michaelmas term has been nothing short of spectacular. Our musicians have embraced every opportunity - whether performing in grand concert halls, creating new bands for Unplugged, or leading House singing with infectious energy. This was a term of collaboration, creativity and unforgettable moments that truly showcased the depth and diversity of musical life at the College.

The Michaelmas term opened with a flourish as some of our finest pianists took to the stage in Big School for the Piano Concert, performing on the magnificent Steinway Model D. This event, of exceptional quality, set the tone for what would become a vibrant and varied musical calendar.

Soon after, the Rogers Theatre hosted the Unplugged Concert - a celebration of contemporary music and creativity. This year saw the formation of four new bands, spanning from FY to Sixth Form, alongside outstanding solo performances from Antoine, Harry and Fin. It was a brilliant showcase of modern talent and originality.

We were also delighted to welcome Year 5 pupils from The Downs Malvern, for a day of musical exploration. The morning began with lively singing workshops, followed by an afternoon carousel of brass, string, and wind sessions.

The day concluded with a wonderful performance in the College Chapel for parents - a truly inspiring experience for all involved.

One of the most enjoyable events of the calendar returned to The Grub with Live Lounge, offering an informal stage for those with less experience or without lessons. This year, our new Music Ambassadors took the lead, making the event entirely pupil-driven - a fantastic example of initiative and creativity.

Our first Music Makers evening celebrated musicians working towards Grades 4–6 in the beautiful setting of Big School. The repertoire was diverse, from singersongwriters to trumpet and piano solos - a truly delightful evening of emerging talent. Later in the term, the second Music Makers event, hosted in the new Tia Tanna Room, focused on younger musicians working towards Grades 1–4. With a packed audience and a warm, informal atmosphere, it was a wonderful opportunity for beginners to perform and be inspired by senior pupils.

The College Jazz Band was honoured to perform at St Hugh’s anniversary dinner, delivering a 45-minute set featuring classics from Fame to Satin Doll. Special mention goes to Sam, Raphael and Rafferty for their outstanding improvised solos, which brought the house down.

The hotly contested House Singing Competition at Malvern Theatres did not disappoint. The standard was exceptional, with House No.9 taking the overall win and Ellerslie claiming first place among the girls’ Houses. Congratulations to every Sixth Former who led their Houses and arranged music - the creativity and leadership were remarkable.

On the first day back after half term, the College Chamber Choir delivered a moving performance of Fauré’s Requiem in the stunning setting of Malvern Priory. The combination of melodious music and the historic backdrop created an unforgettable evening of reflection.

The biggest concert of the term marked the unveiling of our new Music Department - a truly landmark occasion. Guest conductor David Hill worked with our classical soloists and led the orchestra and choir, while Charlie Bates brought his expertise to the jazz ensembles. Our new partnership with the ESO saw professional string players join forces with our pupils, and the evening was crowned by a special appearance from Tony Hadley, performing jazz standards and iconic hits like Gold. A spectacular collision of genres - classical, choral, jazz and pop - made this an unforgettable night.

The term concluded with two magical events: the pupil Carol Service, featuring the full school orchestra, and the traditional Choral Carol Service. The College Choir shone brightly, performing works from Carl Rütti’s Dancing Day to Bethlehem

Down and O Come All Ye Faithful. These services were the perfect way to usher in the festive season.

Drama This term’s Drama productions of Pride and Prejudice and Come From Away showcased an exceptional level of craft, confidence and creativity from the entire cast and crew.

Pride and Prejudice was performed with remarkable poise and wit, bringing Austen’s world to life with sharp characterisation and elegant staging.

The musical Come From Away radiated warmth and humanity, with pupils delivering emotionally rich performances that demonstrated impressive vocal and ensemble skills, accompanied by the Music Department band.

Both productions showed a deep commitment to storytelling, with thoughtful direction and beautifully cohesive technical work. Together, they were a powerful celebration of talent and a testament to the thriving strength of the school’s drama programme.

First Girls Honoured on the Colours Board This term, history was made in the Long Room as the first girls’ names were added to the Colours Honours Board. The board now reflects the growing presence and success of girls in the sport, a fitting recognition as girls’ fixtures and participation continue to rise.

The girls’ programme is thriving, with around 20 to 25 girls turning up for 7am training, many supplementing this with extra one-onone sessions. The dedication and culture they have created is genuinely remarkable. Several of the girls are now involved in county pathways, a testament to their hard work and growing potential.

A huge congratulations to all of them for their energy, commitment, and achievements. It is inspiring to see their success motivating others, who are already setting their sights on leaving their own mark on the honours board.

THE MALVERNIAN CCF The Cadets arrived back in September full of energy and enthusiasm and, with barely a month within which to get match fit, were off on one major exercise and one major competition. At the same time, we welcomed a large cohort of new recruits. We also welcomed three new CFAVs, Capt. Sam Coe, Sargeant Instructor Jack Ashington-Carter, and Sanchia Hansen.

The first few weeks of a new year are often entertaining as new recruits to the CCF attempt to parade in the right place, in the right kit, and at the right time. Meanwhile, only a few feet away, the RAF Section maintain their oasis of calm professionalism, and the squad selected to represent the Royal Marines at the fast-approaching Pringle Trophy calmly drawing weapons from the armoury before camming up and heading over to the 9 Acres to practice section attacks. The difference between the enthusiastic new recruits and calm, confident seniors is chalk and cheese, and I sometimes wonder what this looks like through the eyes of someone new to cadets. Where else are they going to get an experience like the CCF?

The Pringle Trophy Nine determined Royal Marine cadets travelled to the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon to compete in the prestigious Pringle Trophy against schools from across the country. Our team Adrian K, Amaya F, Samuel W, Samuel P, Lucas J, Rufus E, Joel F, Christian C and Aaron S - arrived ready for a challenge.

Across two demanding days, we faced ten tough stances designed to test every skill we had trained for. After a sleepless night thanks to Storm Amy, we were up early on Saturday and straight out to Woodbury Common. We opened with “withdrawal from contact”, earning praise for our speed and communication, then moved into a deliberate section attack, complete with ripple fire and smoke grenades, which we executed successfully.

We gained full marks on observation, completed the command tasks and stretcher carry quickly, and finished the morning with camouflage and concealment. Congratulations to Amaya, Adrian and Sam W for achieving full marks. Back at the Training Centre, we tackled the new “logging and reporting” stance, powered through the Assault Course and handled Close Quarter Combat room clearance with confidence.

Sunday began with strong drill before we faced the famous Endurance Course in full kit. After plunging through the “sheep dip”, crawling through mud, squeezing through tunnels and racing uphill while linked by a single rope, we crossed the line exhausted but proud.

Although we did not take home silverware this year, we placed well and showed resilience, discipline and real Malvern spirit throughout the weekend.

Over the course of the exercise, cadets took part in a range of military-themed activities, including shelter construction, the duties and responsibilities of a sentry, camouflage and concealment techniques, and an interactive stand on the evolution of infantry weapon systems. Evening meals consisted of self-cooked Operational Ration Packs - an experience that some cadets enjoyed more than others!

As darkness fell, cadets were introduced to night operations, exploring surveillance tools such as night sights, thermal imagers, and parachute illumination before heading out on night patrols through woodland and streams while evading enemy forces.

After a brief rest and another ration pack breakfast, the cadets faced a new series of challenges, including stalking exercises using the tag rifle system, close-quarter battle paintball scenarios, first aid training and further core cadet skills.
