Shortly after returning to school following half-term, some Sixth

Everybody seems to have thoroughly enjoyed the occasion which, apart from being a fun event for our seniors, was also an important fundraising event for the multitude of charities which we support. In 2017/18 over £23,000 was raised by our pupils through such events and distributed to the following charities: The British Legion, Help for Heroes, The Oscar Foundation, The Alzheimer’s Society, Acorns Children’s Hospice, Action in Focus,

The British Heart Foundation, The British Red Cross, Cancer Research UK, Care after Combat, Hospice Care Kenya, Malala Fund, Medical Detection Dogs, Myeloma UK, The Roger Gower Memorial Fund and St Richard’s Hospice. Some of these are national or international projects and some are local.

An example of a local charity which we have supported in the past few weeks is Heartstart. Our interest in this charity which has to do with the use of defibrillators and training in CPR resulted from a sad story relating to one of our own school drivers.

Inter-House Singing Competition Well done to all of our performers who graced the Malvern Theatres in the Inter-House Singing Competition. All of the Houses did very well and so the adjudication must have been quite a challenge. Ultimately, the Adjudicator’s Prize went to House 5, the Timms Cup to House 2 and the winning trophy to House 8.

In Rugby we had some close matches against King’s, Macclesfield on Saturday. The U14A won 45-5 with Charles Hoyland scoring four tries, Frankie Jefferies two and Cameron Smith one. The U15A won 34-0 with tries from James Pickering, Jack Yeoward, Zach Watson, Will Crossland and Rory Upton. The U16A lost 5-26, our Players of the Match being Tom Hughes and George Batyrev. Paddy Moyle, Jacob Perry and Shea John were also worthy of special mention. The Seconds drew 5-5 and the Firsts drew 12-12 in a great performance with tries from Dylan Sillence and Vansh Ladwa.

On Saturday, the Senior Management Team held its termly meeting with the Parents’ Forum in the course of which presentations were made and a number of issues were discussed. Richard Whitehead, our SENCO, spoke about Learning Enhancement while Lewis Faulkner, our Deputy Head: Pastoral, spoke to the recent Pastoral Bulletin he had issued to parents on some aspects of alcohol misuse and the consequences. Other topics covered included subject choices, co-curricular opportunities, catering, uniforms and arrangements about House Singing. The purpose of the termly meeting is to consult with parents in a constructive fashion and to move the school forward positively. Parents on this Forum are able to be consulted by fellow parents for advice of a general nature, but if there is an issue which needs to be taken up on an individual basis, then please do continue to direct it to the appropriate person on our staff at Malvern College. Bulkeley Evans The Bulkeley Evans HMC Scholarship awards are made for gap peer projects and, generally speaking, are awarded to those who are financially needy and who will engage in projects which will benefit the community in countries in the developing world. There are a range of stipulations which are attached to such awards and all Houses have been circulated with the details.

Contingency Day This academic year, for the first time, the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has set aside Wednesday 26 June 2019 as a “contingency day” for GCSE and GCE A Level examinations should sustained national or local disruption arise during the June 2019 examination series. In other words it is possible, though unlikely, that some examination papers may be re-scheduled to that day from earlier in the examination period. Should this happen, candidates for the relevant papers would be expected by JCQ to be available in College for examination that day. Clearly, this would not be a last minute decision so most candidates would have time to return to College, but it is something parents may wish to bear in mind when making arrangements for the post-examination period.
