Where your child belongs A home from home Friendships start on the first day. Students are grouped in houses by age, and the first evening is given over to ‘getting to know you’ activities so that nobody spends it on their own. Because modules are open to all abilities, your child meets a different group of students each week. And it’s the shared experiences - the Saturday trips, themed lessons, midweek activities, sport and outdoor adventures - that turn new faces into genuine friendships.

The team around your child Houseparents live in the boarding houses and are on hand day and night. They know each child by name within the first few days.

Heads of Department lead each module. They are Malvern College teachers who teach the same subjects here in term time.

A Matron is resident on site throughout the summer school, looking after day-today health and wellbeing, from medication and minor illness to the child who is simply feeling homesick.

A dedicated transfer manager looks after arrivals and departures, from the airport meet to the return flight. Excursion staff accompany every trip off site, with a supervision ratio of 10:1 away from the College and 12:1 on campus.

Modules designed around your child A strong foundation in English every morning, and a module of your child’s choosing every afternoon. At Malvern College Summer School, every weekday morning is dedicated to English or Advanced English: 15 hours of lessons a week with the College’s own English specialists. Students build fluency through real conversation and hands-on projects, in classes matched to their level. In the afternoon, your child chooses one module each week. Their English keeps growing here too, because each module comes with its own words and phrases that students learn and use as they go. That gives every day a rhythm of focused learning and hands-on discovery.

Flexible, personalised afternoons: Mix and discover try something new each week, from Outdoor Education to STEM, picking up new English vocabulary with each one.

Tailored teaching - our teachers assess each student and adapt activities to their level, including their English, so your child is both challenged and supported.

Stay and advance when your child chooses the same module over several weeks, lessons build on their progress, so they keep moving forward.

This flexibility means your child enjoys a summer shaped around them, balancing focused learning with fun and new challenges.

the module that excited “meEALthewas most - it was never boring and I learnt fascinating new things every day through games and engaging activities! Student

”

English The morning module for every international student, whatever their starting level. English is taught by Malvern College’s own English as an Additional Language specialists each morning from Monday to Friday and a total of 15 hours each week. Lessons go beyond grammar and textbooks as they are practical and project-based, so your child learns by doing. Each week’s English lessons build towards the Saturday trip. Before visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, for example, students might read about Shakespeare’s life and his home town, then see his birthplace for themselves. They could learn and perform scenes from his best-known plays, or explore daily life in the 1600s by designing a tourist leaflet for Stratford as it was in Shakespeare’s time.

Recent projects have included: Interviewing local people in Malvern’s town centre. Creating a brand-new sport and presenting it to their classmates. Making brochures and maps to learn about the local area.

MALVERN COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL

The approach builds confidence in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. A first-day assessment places students with classmates at a similar level, and every student receives an end-of-course English certificate at the end of the course.

13

Advanced English For students who arrive with strong English stretching fluency further through independent, sophisticated project work. Students placed at B2 or above take Advanced English in the morning module slot, taught by Malvern College’s own highly experienced English as an additional language specialists. The pace is quicker than the lower level English module, and the work centres on independent thinking, debate and extended writing, using English as a tool for argument rather than a subject to learn. As with the English module, lessons build towards the Saturday trip, ensuring students can make the most of their excursions. Before Stratford-upon-Avon, for example, students might perform part of a Shakespeare play and research the town’s history in his time.

Students work on: Creative writing - finding their own voice and shaping original work. Journalism and media - writing persuasive articles and analysing current affairs.

Your child will leave with sharper, more precise English, ready to use it in real conversation, and an end-of-course Advanced English certificate.

Debate and global perspectives - arguing a position on world events with students from other countries.

Pursuits was the most exciting module! “ Outdoor I absolutely loved the mountain biking and paddleboarding - it was fantastic! The hiking was challenging but so much fun! Student

”

Outdoor Education Adventure, teamwork and confidence-building in the Malvern Hills. The Malvern Hills make a spectacular setting for adventure. In Outdoor Education, your child steps out of the classroom and into nature, guided every step of the way by Malvern College’s own Outdoor Education specialists. Confidence through new challenges - climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, paddleboarding and hiking encourage students to try new things and believe in themselves. English in action - students learn the language of the outdoors, from kit and safety briefings to reading a map and giving directions and practice it straight away. Leadership and teamwork - activities are designed to bring students together, building collaboration and resilience as they solve problems as a team.

MALVERN COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL

Fresh air and new friendships - time outdoors, plenty of laughter and shared adventures with friends from around the world. Safe and expertly supported - every activity is carefully supervised by experienced, qualified instructors. Students leave with new skills, more confidence in themselves and their English, and memories of adventures they’ll talk about long after summer.

STEM we built rockets and aircrafts. “ InWith my friend we got the furthest distance and won first prize! ” Student

STEM Hands-on projects in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, designed to spark curiosity and build confidence. STEM brings challenge and discovery together. Specialist STEM instructors keep every child engaged while helping them find out what the different disciplines involve. Students also build their English as they work, learning the technical words for what they’re making and explaining their ideas to the group.

Across the week, your child could explore: Sustainable engineering - designing solutions for a greener future.

Rocket design and launch - turning theory into a real launch.

Space exploration - the science of rockets, orbits and how we explore beyond Earth.

Coding - writing and testing their own code through practical tasks.

Mechanical engineering - building machines and testing how they work.

Every activity is designed to stretch the imagination and build real confidence, including the confidence to explain an idea in English. By trying such a range of STEM fields hands-on, your child gains insight into different disciplines that could help shape their future study choices.

Mechatronics - combining electronics and mechanics to make things move. Wind turbine construction - hands-on projects that bring energy science to life.

If your child has a particular interest in STEM, we will also offer a week-long Advanced STEM programme. For further information, contact the Summer School Admissions Team

I’ve been doing “ Tennis and Basketball in the sports module, and I absolutely love it! Student

”

Sports Inclusive, energising and confidence-building – sport that develops skills and teamwork. Sport at Malvern College Summer School is designed for every ability and age group. Whether your child is a natural athlete or simply enjoys playing with friends, they will benefit from expert coaching, excellent facilities and the pleasure of learning a new skill. Each week students take part in a range of sports, including football, badminton, basketball, pickleball and tennis.

MALVERN COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL

The experience builds their English as well: students learn the words for the rules, positions and equipment, and then use them constantly as they call for the ball, talk tactics and encourage their teammates. All coaching is delivered by Malvern College’s own sports teachers, using the College’s own facilities: the all-weather astro pitches, the sports hall and the tennis courts.

woodwork has been so much fun! “MyDoing favourite bit was looking at geometric shapes and building a puzzle. Student

”

Creative Arts Confidence, expression and creativity through hands-on art. Creative Arts gives your child room to express themselves, try new skills and make work they feel proud of. Every activity is designed to build confidence alongside creativity, and students pick up the English that goes with it: the names of materials and tools, the words for shape, colour and texture, and the language to talk about what they’ve made. Led by Malvern College’s own art teachers, the module covers a range of projects, such as: » Making pots and sculptures in ceramics » Building toys in woodwork » Screen printing t-shirts and bags

MALVERN COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOOL

» Creating nature-inspired art with flowers and photo paper » Creative drawing This is a module for everyone, from experienced young artists to complete beginners. Sessions are hands-on and enjoyable, with tasks tailored to every ability.

23

Outside of modules Cultural discovery, on-campus fun, and memories shared with friends. Every week includes exciting opportunities for your child to step off campus and explore the Midlands. For example, a visit to the Cotswolds gives students the opportunity to take their English beyond the classroom and into everyday life. Through exploring historic villages, meeting local people, and discovering the region’s rich culture and agricultural heritage, students practise their language skills in authentic settings while gaining a deeper understanding of life in rural England. This unique blend of language learning, cultural immersion, and exploration makes their learning unforgettable.

Midweek evenings bring a different kind of fun. Whether it’s ice skating, laser tag, or bowling off campus, or cinema nights, craft sessions, and sport on campus, these outings and activities give students the chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy downtime together. Beyond the enjoyment, these experiences build independence, expand their cultural horizons, and create the friendships and memories that make a summer truly transformative.

Assemblies and Certificates Every Friday, the week’s achievements are recognised in front of the whole Summer School. Students gather after supper at the St George statue outside Main Building for our weekly assembly. Led by the Head of Summer School and joined by a senior member of the College leadership, often the Headmaster, they go through what the week has covered and what students have learnt beyond the classroom. Certificates are then presented for achievements across the week. These include celebrating excellence

in a module or students who have done the most to make life in house welcoming for everyone else. Others mark the completion of a module, or of the whole course for students leaving that weekend, so every child is recognised before they go home.
