PASIO - A DRIVEN PASSION FOR SPORT

Dedication. Ambition. Tenacity. Enthusiasm. These are some of the key qualities that high-level athletes possess, and they all have the same driving force: PASSION!

Alma Lategan, a natural science teacher at Hermana Primary School, understands that some of the crucial factors in passion development are motivation, support, and basic need fulfilment - athletes needs to feel supported and capable in their environment.

Alma, an NSA Level 1 qualified netball coach and umpire, as well as level 2 qualified coach in middle and short distance athletics, started offering netball clinics throughout the Eastern Free-State in 2016, and then in January 2024, established club PASIO – Latin for PASSION, with a vision and mission of “Passion with a purpose!”

She offers extra coaching in Netball and Athletics, and makes use of qualified coaches to assist her. Madel Bezuidenhout has been her assistant coach in Netball. Pasio is very proud to bring the Netball legend, Karla Pretorius to Ladybrand! She’s been a Netballer for the Proteas since 2011, and also plays for Australia’s

Sunshine Coast in her off seasons.

She will be motivating and coaching girls from u/10 – u18 on the 25th of April, at Ladybrand High at R250 per player. Booking details will be supplied.

The club is community driven, and relies on help when it comes to the use of courts and equipment. Hermana Primary has been very helpful in offering their netball courts as the official venue. The future of Pasio is bright, with the perspective of coaching hockey and organising a fun run/ walk for community members. At Pasio, we want to connect as many people as possible.

SOCIAL TENNIS ROUND ROBIN

The Ladybrand Sports Club held a tennis round robin doubles tournament that was played weekly. There was 39 participants and three different categories. Each round consisted of 8 games.

In the Junior Group the overall winner was Johan Oberholzer. Congratulations to the other players in the group: Zilan Cronje,

Hilde-Mari Jonker, Christopher Lategan and their dad’s. In this category each player played 4 games with their partners (dad’s) and then swopped to play 4 games against their dad’s.

In the Middle Group the winners were MJ and Chrisna van Pletzen and Larochelle and Francois van der Merwe.

Ingredients:

+- 1.2 kg oxtail pieces

SPAR sunflower oil

30 ml SPAR butter or full fat margarine

3 medium carrots, peeled and thinly sliced

4 stalks celery, cut into chunks

1 large onion, sliced

60 ml SPAR Italian Balsamic Vinegar

Method:

Friday

¾ can SPAR diced tomatoes

175 ml red wine

60 ml dry sherry

3 cloves garlic, crushed

3 ml dried thyme

3 SPAR Bay Leaves

2 sachets liquid beef stock

400 ml hot water

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Brown the oxtail pieces all over in a drizzling of hot oil in a pot. Lift them out and set aside. In the same pot, add the butter over low heat, and toss in the carrot, celery and onion over medium heat until tender. Add the vinegar and scrape in any flavourful residue from the meat and vegetables that adheres to the pot base. Pour in the remaining ingredients. Cover with a lid and simmer slowly for 2 ½ - 3 hours. If the liquid reduces too much, add in a little more wine. The meat should be very tender, but not quite falling off the bone. Remove the oxtail, and pour the liquid off into another pot, through a sieve, pressing down on the vegetables to extract the flavoursome liquid they retain. Bring the liquid to the boil and simmer rapidly until it reduces down to a shiny sauce consistency. Serve this sauce spooned over the oxtail.

Ladybrand is in the fortunate position to have a Sports Club that offers recreational opportunities to many sports lovers.

The Annual General Meeting of Ladybrand Sports Club was held on 4 April 2024.

The newly elected committee for 2024/2025 is: Quentin de Bruyn (President), André Scheepers (Captain), Helen Scheepers (Ladies' Captain), Julian de Freitas (Treasurer), the golf members are Rocky le Roux, Riaan Jonker, Werner Kennedy and Wynand van Niekerk. Members repre-

senting the Tennis Club are Antoon van den Berg and Jorrie van Niekerk.

The following prizes were also awarded at the AGM: Club Champion –Johnny Lin, Ladies Club Champion – Helen Scheepers, Business League Winners 2023 – OVK1, President VS Captain Challenge – Captains Team and OVK Cup Winner 2023 – Jan Dry.
