Nornäs

About 30 km north of Sälen. Beach with wind shelter, playground, and boat rentals. Nearby you’ll also find a campsite with electricity, service facilities, B&B, and a café.

Directions: Take Route 311 north to Sörsjön, turn right and continue about 9 km – look for swimming signs.

When a metal dream becomes reality

Brothers of Metal Open Air brings festival fever to Skinnarvallen

A brand-new music experience is coming to Malung on 22 August, when Skinnarvallen is transformed into a festival arena for the very first Brothers of Metal Open Air. With two stages, around 15 bands and a full day of rock, hard rock and metal, organisers are hoping to create a new late-summer tradition.

The festival is the result of a collaboration between local enthusiasts and the internationally successful metal band Brothers of Metal. And it all started with a casual remark during an interview.

– I said it would be fun to put up a big stage at Skinnarvallen one day and play a show in Malung, says Brothers of Metal member Mats Nilsson. Then local businessman John Öhrnell picked up on the idea and started getting in touch.

At first, Mats wasn’t convinced the plans were serious.

– I tried explaining how much work and money goes into organising a festival, but nobody seemed discouraged, he says with a laugh.

What began as the idea of a single concert soon grew into a full-scale festival. Together with John Öhrnell, Erik Eriksson and other volunteers from Malungs IF, planning has been underway for months.

– None of us has organised a festival before, John and Erik say with a smile. But how hard can it be?

TWO STAGES, NON-STOP MUSIC

The festival will feature two alternating stages to keep the music going throughout the day.

– While one band is performing, the next stage is being prepared, so there will always be something happening, explains Mats.

The main stage will be located at the southern end of the football ground and equipped with LED screens, lighting rigs and pyrotechnics. A second, smaller stage will showcase emerging and less-established acts.

– That’s one of the great things about festivals, says Mats. You might come to see your favourite bands, but often leave having discovered several new ones.

FROM LONDON TO DALARNA

Among the headline acts is British power metal band Gloryhammer, known for their theatrical live performances and fantasy-inspired sound. Brothers of Metal themselves will top the bill, bringing experience from major festivals such as Sweden Rock, Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze.

But the event is just as much about local and regional talent.

– The bands either have a connection to Malung, a connection to us, or they’re simply groups we enjoy listening to and know deliver great live shows, says Mats.

The line-up includes Eclipse, Mimikry,

Huggorm, Xion, Winding Road, Retribution, Disrupted and Hellforce, among others.

Musically, the festival covers a wide spectrum.

– Everything from black metal to punk rock. The common denominator is probably distorted guitars, Mats says.

HOMECOMING FOR ROCK SCHOOL ALUMNI

For Mia Mästerbo of Mimikry, the festival will be something of a homecoming.

– Malung is special to me not only because I was born here. It’s also where I first met my bandmates Hjalle and Heavy. We all attended Rockgymnasiet (the Rock Music Upper Secondary School) and have been playing together since 1995.

The event is also shaping up to be a reunion for many former students.

– Erik from Eclipse and the entire band Winding Road also studied there. We all learned from Bengt Mattsson. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it.

She hopes the festival will become a recurring event.

– To establish something on this scale, people need to support it so it can return year after year. I really hope people buy tickets and come along.

Johan Berg from Falun-based band Xion is equally enthusiastic.

– It’s fantastic to play close to home in Dalarna alongside Brothers of Metal, who spend much of their time touring outside Sweden. It’s also great to see so many local bands on the programme, many of them friends of ours.

He describes the festival as a reunion of the regional rock scene.

– We often meet at different events, but this feels like a proper company party.

Visitors may even get to hear brand-new material.

– We might just treat the audience to an unreleased song from our upcoming album, which will be released in September, says Johan

TOMORROW’S TALENT TAKES THE STAGE

The festival will also give audiences a chance to discover the next generation of musicians.

The smaller stage will feature young Falun band Hellforce, whose members are between 12 and 14 years old. Visitors will also be able to see Malung’s young singing talent Frida Hedlund.

Organisers are hoping to attract between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors. By the end of May, around 1,500 tickets had already been sold.

Malung has long been known as the home of Dansbandsveckan. This August, a new chapter will be written when Skinnarvallen welcomes thousands of rock and metal fans for the first time on this scale.

– Our hope is that people leave with smiles on their faces and feel they’ve experienced something truly memorable, say the organisers.

If successful, Brothers of Metal Open Air could mark the beginning of a brand-new late-summer tradition in Malung.

The fish are biting!

Out here in the Malung wilderness, your next fishing adventure is just around the bend. The region is vast and full of variety – with lakes, tarns, and rivers stretching in all directions. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned angler, you’ll find waters that suit you. And thanks to the well-developed road network, many fishing spots are easily accessible by car.

The Västerdal River

Like a lifeline through the landscape, the Västerdal River offers top-class fishing. Grayling is the most common catch here, but trout and whitefish also hide beneath the surface. A particularly popular stretch lies north of Malungsfors – nine kilometers of flowing water easily accessible from both banks. Between Malung and Yttermalung, you’ll find more beautiful currents, while the southern stretch offers a mix of calmer waters and rapids, perfect for trying your luck with different species.

Typical water flow is around 55 m³/second, and the river is fishable up to 65 m³.

Ogströmmen

The winding Ogströmmen flows from Lake Ogsjön down toward Öje. Along the nine kilometers that run through Malung’s fishing area, you’ll find exciting fishing in pristine nature. Here, the water varies – short rapids are mixed with calm stretches. This is a great spot for both grayling and trout.

The upper two kilometers have their own unique character, with short rapids and longer, still stretches. During summer, the calm pools don’t hold trout, but they are home to large pike. Try fishing at dusk – every year, impressive meter-long pike are caught here.

Malung has two Put & Take waters: Jängtjärn and Mörttjärn. Both are equipped with jetties and shelters and are adapted for people with limited mobility.

This well-maintained and easily accessible tarn welcomes everyone. With piers, boardwalks, shelters, and fire pits, it’s a great fishing destination for the whole family. Rainbow trout (0.5–3 kg) are stocked regularly.

Mörttjärn

Another easily reached tarn with great chances of catching rainbow trout. Here, you’re also allowed to use a float tube, offering more freedom to find the perfect spot. Fully accessible with piers, shelters, and fire pits.

Trout stocked every 2–3 weeks. One rod per person. Max 3 fish per visit. Children under 12 fish for free on a parent’s permit.

Don’t forget to buy your fishing permit before heading out – and why not pack a picnic and a thermos too? With a bit of luck, patience, and the right lure, you might take home a true trophy – or at least a memory to last a lifetime.

Starts at Malung Camping and follows both riverbanks to Yttermalung through beautiful nature.

Starts at Malung Camping. A fantastic loop with fast, flowing, and enjoyable singletrack.

Byråsrundan 13 km

A hilly trail that can be tough, even for experienced cyclists. The view from Byråsen over Malung is stunning.

A comfortable and family-friendly trail along the Västerdal River, starting from Malung Camping.

Lätt cykling genom Öje på bra grusväg till bron över Lyån i Hiselen. Leden vänder åter och passerar en annan del av vackra byn Öje.

Easy cycling through Öje on good gravel road to the bridge over Lyån in Hiselen. The trail then returns and passes through another part of the beautiful village of Öje.

Leden börjar som den gröna leden och fortsätter sedan längs Ogströmmen på fin grusväg.

The trail starts as the green trail and then continues along Ogströmmen on fine gravel road.

Samma led som blå till Norberget, därefter fortsätter leden via Åsens fäbod. I början lättcyklad utför och fortsätter sedan med spännande singeltrack och krävande stigning.

Same trail as the blue one to Norberget, then continues via Åsen’s summer pasture. Easy downhill in the beginning. Then continues with exciting singletrack and challenging climb.

Start vid Tyngsjö Vildmark. Leden har branta backar och går via vindkraftparken Korpfjället. Från höga höjder har man fantastisk utsikt över skogarna och sjöarna.

Start at Tyngsjö Wilderness. The trail has steep climbs and goes via the wind farm at Korpfjället. From the high elevations, you get fantastic views over forests and lakes.

The skills course is a fully dug track with banked turns and bumps designed for younger cyclists. The trail is located in a forest area right next to Äråbadet. Start and finish from there.

An easy-to-ride loop suitable for most people, whether you are a beginner, riding with family, or your legs are a bit tired. Mostly follows forest roads and paths and also includes a fair amount of singletrack.

Simonssons Rör trail 13 km

Hilly course with a large proportion of trail/ singletrack and a fantastic view over the valley from Rostberget. Suitable for cyclists looking for more challenges.

Heden 13 km

Longer trail with great variation that follows a mix of gravel road, tractor road, and path, with some really nice singletrack sections offering a more challenging ride.

Connection trail and main trail Tour de Rörbäcksnäs 103 km

The connecting trail is 18 km which then joins the regular Tour de Rörbäcksnäs, which is 85 km. Road cycling through beautiful nature with some demanding climbs.

Örbäcksnäs–Hundfjället 18 km

Starts at the school and heads in the opposite direction compared to the other trails. Some trail in the beginning, then onto the gravel road towards Skogsätra.

Hemköp, Tandådalen

Skogsätraleden 6 km – ej skyltad led!

Starts at the Trollskogen parking lot, Hundfjället. Steep climb to the top of the chairlift, then relatively good trail around the ravine, followed by a steep, rocky, and demanding downhill section. Connects to the Rörbäcksnäs – Hundfjället trail.

Siktån 2 km

Easy trail for the youngest riders or those who are not very experienced. A mix of trail and tractor road, with no particularly difficult sections. Follows the other trails out from the school, then forms a short counter-clockwise loop before reconnecting with the other trails back towards the school.

Byrundan 10 km

The original Rörbäcksnäs loop, now extended. A good and fun loop that is fast and easy to ride, a mix of trail and tractor road.

Näsingen 19 km

A short technical trail where you get to try most aspects of mountain biking – steep climbs, steep descents, tricky sections, fast parts, and some riding on wooden constructions.

Högåsen 3 km

A short technical trail where you get to try most aspects of mountain biking – steep climbs, steep descents, tricky sections, fast parts, and some riding on wooden constructions.

Kalugapasset 15 km

Follows Byrundan at the beginning, but after the first uphill section, the trail branches off onto a narrow, fine trail and then out onto a gravel road before reconnecting to the shared trail east of the village. It then continues with several kilometers of world-class singletrack. Includes some technically challenging rocky sections.

Vallsjörundan 32 km

A fun, varied, and well-built loop of absolute top quality. A mix of singletrack and slightly wider trails. Slightly more gravel road than on the Kalugapasset trail.

Örsjöleden 10 km

Starts at the southernmost point of Vallsjörundan and returns to it after 10 lovely kilometers. Begins with 7 km of fine gravel road climb, at times quite steep. Then 3 km of trail – mostly downhill and at times demanding.

Through Millstone and Needle’s Eye – historical excursions in the heart of Västerdalarna

If you are curious about Malung’s rich history, there are plenty of places to explore. Discover everything from old mountain pastures and millstones to glacial erratics and memorials – and get to know what life used to be like. This includes craftsmanship, musical traditions, and dramatic moments from times long past.

Flygmonumentet – Malung

In the mountains west of Malung stands a memorial dedicated to two pilots who perished during World War II. Parts of the crashed aircraft can still be seen in the area.

Hembygdsgården – Malung

A genuine enclosed farmstead that shows how a prosperous farmer lived in the past. Here you’ll find several historic buildings, collected by the Malung Local Heritage Society since the 1920s.

Kvarnstensbrottet – Malung

Located in Östra Utsjö, this is one of Dalarna’s first cultural reserves, where millstones have been quarried since the 8th century. These were used to grind grain into flour – and have been found as far away as Skåne and Norway.

Flyttblock – Tyngsjö

One of Sweden’s largest glacial erratics – a full 400 cubic meters – lies by the Kvien Dam. An impressive remnant from the Ice Age.

Arvselens levande fäbod – Malung

Arvselen’s Living Summer Pasture. Book a guided tour to this active summer pasture, where goats and cows graze freely and butter and cheese are made the old-fashioned way.

Hallsjökvarn – Malung

A water mill ”skvaltkvarn” – a simple but effective type of water mill historically used at small streams.

Skinnmuseum – Öje

In the old leather factory in Öje, you can follow Malung’s long tradition of leather tailoring. On display are everything from machines and templates to buttons and materials.

Edets Kvarn – Yttermalung

A charming old water mill overlooking the Edsforsen rapids – a perfect stop for those interested in history..

Lejsme Per’s Cottage – Riihimäki

Located in Malung’s forest region lies the old cottage of folk musician Lejsme Per. He lived here from 1822 to 1907 and was one of the most renowned folk musicians of his time.

Skvaltkvarnarna – Jägra

A whole water milling area about six kilometers north of Malung, where you get a vivid impression of how people once used water power in everyday life.

Höghedens Ancient Monument and Cultural Area – Malungsfors

About nine kilometers north of Malungsfors lies this fascinating place. Here you’ll find ”Danslokarna”, where people danced as early as the 1500s, and an execution site where the last execution took place in 1734. Clearly signposted from National Road 66 – just follow the road toward the Power Station and continue along the Old Country Road.

Churches and Chapels with History

– from medieval stone churches to chapels on peninsulas

In and around Malung, there are several beautiful churches and chapels that tell the story of local faith, traditions, and craftsmanship through the centuries. Here you’ll find everything from 13th-century churches to charming little chapels in forested landscapes – each with its own story to discover.

Malungs kyrka – Malung

The oldest parts of the church date back to the 13th century, but there are also objects from the 1600s and 1300s – including the well-preserved St. Olaf sculpture from Lübeck. In 2004, Swedish Television (SVT) broadcast the Lucia Morning celebration from here, in a traditional 1860s atmosphere..

Fors kapell – Malungsfors

Built in the 1930s, with a bell tower and interior that has been preserved in its original condition. A fine example of stylistically pure church architecture typical of the era.

Yttermalungs kapell – Yttermalung

A modern-style chapel from the 1960s, which despite its newer design maintains an oldworld and atmospheric feeling.

Tyngsjö kyrka – Tyngsjö

Consecrated in 1875 and picturesquely located on a peninsula by Lake Tyngsjön – a true gem in the southern part of the parish.

Öje kapell – Öje

A chapel with roots in the 1500s, which to this day remains an important place for both reflection and local community.

Lima kyrka – Lima

Lima Church was built in the mid-1800s after an older stone church on the site burned down. The church features white-plastered walls, a tower with a copper lantern, and round-arched windows. Tradition and practicality coexist here – the back of the church includes a communal space used for gatherings.

Approx. 47 km from Malung’s center. Transtrands kyrka – Transtrand Transtrand Church is a bright and spacious stone church in neoclassical style from 1830. It stands in the valley by the Västerdal River and houses several preserved features such as the sculpted altarpiece and the large organ from 1960. In the churchyard stands the Transtrand Monument – a memorial to the area’s forest workers.

Sälens Fjällkyrka – Sälen, Högfjället

This log-built mountain church from 1969 is beautifully located near the Högfjällshotellet. The church was built to accommodate the many winter visitors and has space for 150 people. The altar stone is made of sandstone from Mångsbodarna.

Tandådalens Fjällkyrka

A church with a mountain atmosphere and generous space – consecrated in 1985 and built in wood, with a large church square and a fireplace made of Älvdalen stone. The building includes the main church room, a church cottage, and space for activities all year round. The altar is a handcrafted piece by Pell Olle Eriksson, and the artwork above reflects the colors of the rainbow.

Breathe in – and head out!

Do you want to smell the scent of pine, hear the wind rustling through the treetops, and simply listen to the silence? Then the forests around Malung are for you. Here you’ll find plenty of beautiful hiking trails where you can truly experience nature – far away from traffic and noise. Follow soft paths through forest and wetlands – maybe you’ll find cloudberries, blueberries, or lingonberries along the way. The adventure awaits – don’t forget your map and compass!

The colors on the trail maps indicate the difficulty level – there are three different colors:

A scenic trail along the eastern bank of the Västerdal River. The first kilometre is lit and accessible for people with disabilities.

Bäverstigen 6 km

Malung – Map no. 11

Bäverstigen is a newly marked nature trail on the western bank of the Västerdal River, starting from the campsite.

Kvarnstensbrottet 4,5 km

Malung – Map no. 2

Walk through a thousand years of history. The terrain is varied, with some steep sections. Parts of the northern section are rocky and challenging.

Lybergsgnupen

With its rocky outcrop and 200-meter steep cliff, Lybergsgnupen offers one of Malung’s most stunning viewpoints. A shelter with a fire pit is available at the top.

At the top there is an old fire watchtower. Once you’re up in the tower, you’ll have a magnificent view. NOTE! The trail is poorly marked!

Start vid vandrarhemmet i Ö je. Lätt vandring i skogsmiljö. Leden går över en hängbro och på andra sidan Ogstömmen kan man fortsätta till Ö jslyberget och Lybergsgnupen.

Start at the hostel in Öje. Easy hike in forest surroundings. The trail crosses a suspension bridge, and on the other side of the Ogströmmen you can continue to Öjslyberget and Lybergsgnupen.

Start either from Vålberget near Öje or beyond Arvselen. From the top of Öjsberget, 513 meters above sea level, you have a fantastic view over Lake Öjesjön.

– yoga finds a home in the

Hayloft

In a historic old barn, Malin Stengård is creating a space for stillness, movement and meaningful connections. This summer, Yoga på loftet (Yoga in the Hayloft) returns with classes for both beginners and experienced practitioners.

On the upper floor of an old family barn in Södra Heden, near Lima, a summer of movement, mindfulness and relaxation awaits. For Malin Stengård, yoga is about far more than exercise.

– In an increasingly digital world, I think we need human connection more than ever, she says.

Born and raised in Stockholm, Malin has spent her summers at the family farm since childhood. When she later took over the property, the idea gradually emerged to create something of her own in the barn – a place where people could meet, unwind and simply be present.

Last summer, yoga classes were held over three weeks, attracting between six and eight participants per session. This year, the programme has expanded to four weeks, running from Week 27 to Week 30, with around four classes each week. Participants can attend either in person or online.

– The philosophy is simple: yoga is for everyone. Many people think you need to be flexible or experienced, but it’s really about stepping away from your thoughts for a while, reconnecting with your body and being present in yourself.

The classes are tailored to the participants and include several different styles of yoga. These range from Vinyasa Flow, where movement follows the breath in a gentle sequence, to soft morning sessions focused on stretching and mindfulness, as well as more physically challenging evening classes that emphasise strength and stability.

Yin yoga is also offered, with poses held for extended periods of time.

– When you stay in a position for several minutes, something happens both physically and mentally. Afterwards, many people experience a sense of lightness and calm.”

The setting itself plays an important role in the experience, Malin explains.

– This building carries so much history. There’s something special about the old timber, the scent of the wood and the atmosphere of the space. Over the years, it has hosted everything from parties and hunting meetings to family gatherings and weddings.

Last year, participants ranged in age from seven years old to well over sixty, and both women and men found their way to the barn.

– What I love most is the mix of people and the fact that everyone feels comfortable coming exactly as they are.

Above all, Malin hopes that participants leave each session with a sense of calm and connection.

– Many arrive feeling stressed, with their shoulders practically up by their ears, and leave with a completely different sense of ease in their bodies. It’s wonderful to witness that change.

She describes yoga as a tool for quieting both the body and the mind.

– We’re so used to constantly moving on to the next thing. Here, you have the chance to pause for a moment and simply check in with yourself.
