Maltz Jupiter Theatre Believe Campaign

Why We Believe Entertain | Educate | Inspire

“Great communities have great assets: excellent schools that educate the whole student, first-rate hospitals that put their patients first, and superb cultural institutions that feed the soul. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has participated in the town of Jupiter’s journey in becoming a great community, but we wish to go beyond that and make it remarkable. Throughout history, artists and innovators have dreamt beyond any boundaries. They don’t allow physical limitations and lack of imagination to hold back progress. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is ready, through our Believe Capital Campaign, to do what we do best and use creative thinking to ask ‘what if?’ What if by telling a story on a stage we could change the way we see the world? What if people of all ages and backgrounds had a shared space to come together to connect and learn? What if a new generation of dreamers found inspiration for their greatness in our hometown and then shared it with the world? We’ve asked ‘what if,’ and the answer is clear. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is ready to take its place as one of the vital building blocks of a great community. We’re eager to carry out this expansion—not only in bricks and mortar—but in people, ideas, and passion.”

Andrew Kato

[Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre]

Our Goal in 3 Acts Goal: $35 million The three areas that the campaign focuses on relate to the Theatre’s mission to entertain, educate, and inspire our community. For more than a decade, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has been a cultural hub of Palm Beach County. The Theatre is now positioned for growth, and stands ready to elevate its entertainment and cultural offerings. To ensure the future of the performing arts in our community, we have launched the Believe Capital Campaign which directly involves our mission principles to entertain, educate, and inspire our community. When contemplating what the Maltz Jupiter Theatre can be in the next five to ten years, we focused our strategic plan in these three areas. Here’s how. 1

Entertain

The stage will be ten feet deeper and six feet wider on either side, and the proscenium height will be raised three feet, making the Theatre the same size as a small Broadway house. By expanding our stage and renovating our production facilities, we will be able to support and create pre-Broadway and national tour productions.

Educate

We will double the size of the Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts in order to enroll more students and offer more training opportunities, internship programs, and master classes. Students will have more performance opportunities in our second space, and will be able to perform during the season.

Inspire

We will add a 199-seat second performance space to allow for more diverse programming that will expand our audience base. This space will feature flexible seating configurations making it useful for a variety of events. We will be able to program and develop productions outside of our current populist programming to appeal to a variety of audiences.

How is this project beneficial to the community? By producing its own shows, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre utilizes local businesses and suppliers, creating more jobs and supporting the local economy. The Conservatory is currently operating at capacity; with more space we can take on more students who will benefit from a superior arts education program. Patrons will gain the opportunity to experience different types of cultural events such as film screenings, lecture series, cabarets, exhibits, and other cultural events. Our audiences could be the first to see the next Broadway-bound hit musical! Hamilton was developed Off-Broadway at The Public Theater; we could have the chance to produce the next sensation right here in South Florida. The Theatre will ultimately become a tourist destination. Attracting tourists to the area will support local hotels and restaurants, and contribute to Palm Beach County’s reputation as a thriving center for the arts.

That was the Theatre then, and the Theatre of today is doing extraordinarily well. But there needs to be a Theatre of tomorrow. Tomorrow is what we are working towards with the Believe Capital Campaign. This will put Jupiter in the position of receiving preBroadway productions, and giving our youth a facility which can lead to a career in the arts.

The performing arts have the ability to touch us as individuals and bring us together as a community, which is why we are so fortunate to have the Maltz Jupiter Theatre as a leader in our cultural and artistic community. There is nothing like the experience of a live theatre production, and to be able to experience such high-quality theatre right in our own backyard is truly remarkable. We often refer to the combination of our community’s special characteristics as making us ‘Uniquely Jupiter,’ and the Maltz is an exceptional community asset that embodies all that is special and unique about our hometown.”

“At Valencia Reserve, we have a group called The Players Club. We put on amateur plays written, performed, and produced by our residents. The first time we ever saw a show at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, we couldn’t get over how professional it was. Every time we leave a performance we say, “Incredible! That was better than Broadway!” Many of us can say that truthfully because we grew up in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut seeing these popular shows. Now that we all live in Florida, we are so fortunate to get the chance to see Broadway in our backyard. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is more than just a theatre because of its power to consistently put a smile on our faces. When you drive up to the Theatre, it feels like you are driving up to a theatre. We are excited knowing we’ve planned a spectacular evening out. We’ve gotten all dressed up, morale is high, and it just lights a fire in us.”

The productions at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre are equal to, and in some cases surpassing, their Broadway counterparts. Art institutions, especially the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, challenge and stimulate the public. The spoken word is a powerful force. No matter in what era the story unfolds, audiences can be enlightened and, at the same time, entertained unlike any other art form.

“The best part about being involved at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is that we get the chance to audition for the season productions. I was cast in Newsies last season, and it was really cool meeting the people I want to be like someday. I learned what the rehearsal process was like: fast, intense, and jammed packed with learning new material. It was a blast, though! The Theatre expansion would be amazing for the Conservatory—the studios are so tight with all the kids we have. It’s hard to practice being on stage when the Theatre is being used all year, so a second stage for the students to use would be really helpful for all of us who want to make it on the big stage, or Broadway! The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is more than just a theatre to me because it’s like having a second family that is there for you when you need them. If I have a rough day at school, I know I can come to class at the Conservatory, see my friends, let loose, and be creative.”

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Student Matinee series has become a tradition at Jupiter Elementary School. Every August, teachers ask me which shows we are going to see. This year, all of the Jupiter Elementary School students (approximately 900) will be walking through the Theatre doors to enrich their love of the arts. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to watch wonderful talent act out the stories they hear in the classroom.

The Wizard of Oz Young Performers’ Edition Production Program

A new marquee entrance towards the front of the building will brand the Conservatory with its own identity, and a curb cut in the current parking lot will enable parents to safely drop off students with ease. In addition, the relationship of the Conservatory space to the new Production offices is a unique feature that will place students in proximity with visiting artists working on season productions.

“After so many years volunteering here, I’ve realized that the key to keeping theatre alive is making it accessible. This is especially true for young people. With the addition of a second theatre space, we could take into consideration new plays and musicals that attract younger patrons, and market these productions with affordability in mind. These young people would secure the future of theatre as an art form because it would be a part of their everyday lives. I’m a firm believer in experiencing as much of life as you can, which should include more than your daily routine of watching Netflix on a screen. That’s what live theatre has to offer—that’s what the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has to offer.”

To create diverse programming, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre will include a new 199-seat second space. This additional performance area will feature flexible seating, ideal for cabaret performances, commissioned new works, film series, museum installations, play readings, and intimate productions. It will also allow Conservatory productions more stage time as part of the Theatre season. Proposed second space

A community that has a thriving theater is a community that has a thriving heartbeat.”

Community Impact 18

Al Blackstone

[Broadway and Maltz Jupiter Theatre Choreographer]

“Theaters like the Maltz Jupiter Theatre shape the communities that they serve from the inside out. At its core, theater is a collaboration; a group of people come together to make the impossible possible and to tell stories that shine a light on the values and feelings of people from all walks of life. Students learn how to express themselves, and audiences learn how to look at life from someone else’s point of view. A community that has a thriving theater is a community that has a thriving heartbeat; a place to come together to reflect on the world and our place in it.”

In association with Americans for the Arts, the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County conducted a survey on the economic impact of cultural tourism in Palm Beach County for the 2017 fiscal year. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre participated in this survey and found compelling evidence that the attendees contributed significantly to the economic vitality of Palm Beach County including: purchasing dinner at restaurants, shopping at local stores, and spending the night at hotels. Overall, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and its attendees spent an estimated $13.4 million in total culture-related dollars. This estimated total is equivalent to 305 full-time jobs in Palm Beach County, generated an estimated $6.4 million in resident household income, produced $579,000 in local government revenues, and $672,000 in state government revenues.

As one of Florida’s largest regional theatres, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre attracts 100,000 visitors annually – making it a major cultural attraction in The Palm Beaches. The organization also provides a stage and a spotlight for both professional and aspiring artists who want to be a part of first-class productions.”

Did you know... The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is one of only six LORT B+ theatres in the United States.

League of Resident Theatres The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is a member of the largest professional theatre association in the United States, League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Theatres are categorized into tiers A through D, with tiers determined by the weekly actual box office receipts averaged over the last three fiscal years. The Theatre’s 617-seat venue is Florida’s only LORT B+ theatre. This is an impressive standing, especially for such a young organization such as ours, but it also illuminates the opportunities when we compare ourselves to other similar theatres. We can improve our national standing by adding the following goals:

• Create a sought-after internship program • House multiple performance spaces • Launch pre-Broadway and national tour productions • Contribute new plays and musicals to the national theatre landscape • Achieve national recognition as an award-winning theatre

2003 Maltz Jupiter Theatre construction

We came to Florida from Cleveland, which is phenomenal in terms of culture. There’s the orchestra, art museums, and it has a wonderful theatre district—it’s a city where there’s always something going on. So when we came here, we encountered somewhat of a cultural wasteland, lacking both funding and programming. I knew we had to do something. I saw what the arts did for Cleveland, and I wanted to see Jupiter prosper in the same way. Eventually, we acquired the Burt Reynold’s Dinner Theatre as a 501c3, not-for-profit institution, and hired Andrew Kato. Raised in Tequesta, Andrew spent a number of years as a freelance producer on Broadway. The Theatre continues to thrive under his leadership, developing into an award-winning cultural jewel for this entire region. Andrew was instrumental in our dream of instilling a love for the performing arts into this community.”
