E | For millions of years, mountains have been in a constant state of change. Motionless to the eye, mountains are moving and reshaping themselves. Ancient, rugged, battered by water and rain, and yet we find them inexplicably beautiful.

The image of a mountain opens ones heart, their countless imperfections make them perfect to us, each in their own unique way.

Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese term for imperfect beauty. The aesthetics of this Zen Buddhism expression has been woven into the fabric of Maloja since our inception: Attention to detail, valuing the old, repurposed items, simplicity and honesty.

A unique way of perceiving things is the essence of Wabi-Sabi. Simple, quiet, unpretentious things that radiate presence, authority and beauty, just like the mountains.

D | Wenn wir die Berge sehen, geht uns das Herz auf. Ihr Anblick erscheint uns vollkommen. Dabei sind sie alles andere als das. Die Berge unterliegen einem ständigen Veränderungsprozess. Alles bewegt sich. Alles wandelt sich. Seit Jahrmillionen. Nichts an ihnen ist vollkommen. Aber sie berühren uns.

Auf ihre ganz eigene Art und Weise.

Sie sind, wie sie sind: Alt. Schroff. Gezeichnet von Wind und Wetter. Und wir finden sie schön.

In Japan gibt es einen Begriff für die Schönheit des Unvollkommenen: Wabi Sabi. Vieles, was uns in diesem ästhetischen Konzept aus dem Zen-Buddhismus begegnet, leben wir bei Maloja seit dem ersten Tag: Liebe zum Detail.

Wertschätzung für alte, gebrauchte Gegenstände. Einfachheit. Ehrlichkeit.

E | Surrendering to the natural cycle of birth and death, charting your own path through life, respecting nature and exuding passion, empathy and curiosity; this is what Maloja stands for and this is Wabi-Sabi.

Our current collection could easily be called Wabi-Sabi, but that would have limited what Maloja stands for. As a company that calls the Alps home we have found the mountain culture of Japan and the Japanese way of life an inspiration to us.

D | Die aktuelle Kollektion „Wabi Sabi“ zu nennen, wäre vermessen. Aber als Firma aus dem Alpenraum finden wir uns in dieser japanischen Lebenseinstellung so sehr wieder, dass sie uns zum Leitmotiv, zur Inspirationsquelle wurde. Wabi Sabi steht für eine bestimmte Art, Dinge zu betrachten. Sie dürfen schlicht, leise, unprätentiös sein.

Und gleichzeitig strahlen sie Präsenz, Autorität und Schönheit aus. Genauso wie die Berge.

Sich dem natürlichen Zyklus aus Werden und Vergehen hinzugeben. Den eigenen Weg durchs Leben zu gehen.

Der respektvolle Umgang mit Mensch und Natur. Leidenschaft, Empathie und Neugierde. Dafür steht Maloja. Und Wabi Sabi.

D | Ein bisschen kurios ist es ja schon: Wer im Winter ins Land der aufgehenden Sonne reist, sollte mit einem nicht rechnen, nämlich Sonne.

Zumindest auf Hokkaido, der nördlichsten Insel Japans, bekommt man diese nur selten zu Gesicht. Genauso wenig wie blauen Himmel. Weiß ist die dominierende Farbe in der Landschaft – und Schnee der Grund, weshalb Menschen aus der ganzen Welt im Winter hierher reisen.

E | It’s a bit contrary to what one might think: If you travel to the land of the rising sun in winter, don’t expect to actually see the sun. On Hokkaido, the northernmost Japanese island you rarely get a glimpse of the sun, the same can be said about blue skies. White is the dominant colour of the landscape and snow is the reason people from all over the world visit there in winter.

“Japow” is the name of the epic Japanese powder, which can be considered a highly addictive substance to skiers. On Hokkaido it falls from the sky from the end of November through till April. In fact an impressive amount of snow falls there and it is truly impossible to comprehend until a person experiences it for themselves.

„Japow“ heißt das edle Pulver, das nicht nur Skifahrer süchtig macht. Auf Hokkaido fällt es von Ende November bis April vom Himmel. Und zwar in so rauen Mengen, dass man es kaum glauben kann … bis man sich selbst davon überzeugt hat.

E | To be honest, we were sceptical for some time if our plans for our winter photo shoot in Japan would work out. The weather data from previous years forecasted a 50/50 chance that there would be enough snow for ski touring at the beginning of December when we planned to go. The search for trails that offered the best-case scenario quickly morphed into an intensive research project followed by, whether or when to book our flights.

One could say it was a bit like rolling the dice at the casino: We were “all-in� and uncertain of the outcome.

It was a big relief landing in Sapporo. The host city of the 1972 Olympics welcomed us with winter temperatures and most importantly, snow. Tomo, our guide and driver who was with us for the summer photo shoot was ready and waiting for us at the airport. We loaded up the car and set out on the quickest route to the mountains.

On the way to our first destination Otoineppu we learned our first lesson: Speed is relative.

Travelling to the smallest village of Hokkaido on icy roads with a top speed of 60 km/h Tomo had time to provide us with a brief introduction to the culture and customs of the country. Four hours later we finally arrive and by this time we have a good understanding of the cultural differences between Japan and Europe. So, we are not surprised when we find only two kimonos in the six-square-metre double bedroom room instead of a shower. For personal hygiene one heads to the “Onsen”, a communal bath with shared showers, male and female baths are strictly separated. We also learned that taking a shower while sitting on a small plastic stool takes some time to get used to.

D | Wir waren ehrlich gesagt lange skeptisch, ob die Pläne für unser geplantes Winter-Fotoshooting in Japan aufgehen würden: Die Wetterdaten aus den Vorjahren versprachen eine 50/50-Chance, dass Anfang Dezember schon genug Schnee für Skitouren liegen könnte. Die Suche nach Loipen entpuppte sich als intensive Recherche. Und als es hieß „Flüge buchen oder nicht?“, fühlten wir uns ein bisschen wie im Casino: Wir setzten alles auf eine Karte. Ausgang ungewiss.

Umso größer ist die Freude bei der Landung in Sapporo. Die Olympiastadt von 1972 empfängt uns mit winterlichen Temperaturen und … Schnee.

Tomo, unser Guide und Fahrer aus dem Sommer, steht auch schon bereit. Also nichts wie los und auf dem schnellsten Weg in die Berge.

Unser erstes Ziel heißt Otoineppu und die Lektion, die wir auf der Fahrt dorthin lernen, lautet: Geschwindigkeit ist relativ. Während uns Tomo eine kleine Einführung in die Sitten und Gebräuche des Landes gibt, steuert er auf den eisigen Straßen mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 60 km/h auf das kleinste Dorf Hokkaidos zu.

Als wir vier Stunden später dort ankommen, wissen wir über die wichtigsten kulturellen Unterschiede zwischen Japan und Europa Bescheid.

So erstaunt es uns auch nicht, als wir im sechs Quadratmeter großen Doppelzimmer statt einer Dusche nur zwei Kimonos antreffen. Zur Körperpflege begibt man sich in diesem Hotel ins „Onsen“, ein zum Haus gehörendes, öffentliches Bad mit Gemeinschaftsduschen – natürlich streng nach Weiblein und Männlein getrennt.

D | Wie wir schnell feststellen, ist nicht nur das Duschen im Sitzen auf einem kleinen Plastikhocker gewöhnungsbedürftig. Auch beim Thema Essen wird uns bewusst, wie westlich wir geprägt sind. Obwohl Tomo alles unternimmt, um uns die japanische Küche schmackhaft zu machen, müssen wir immer wieder höflich ablehnen: Rohe Scampi, Muscheln oder Fisch? Sorry, die Hälfte der Reisegruppe isst leider keine Meeresfrüchte. Misosuppe, Ramen oder Udon? Gerne, aber möglichst nicht zum Frühstück. Letztendlich entwickelt sich ein japanisches Grillrestaurant mit Self-Service zu unserem Lieblingslokal: Wer dort auf ein kleines Bildchen am Touchscreen drückt, hat 30 Sekunden später das Bier auf dem Tisch. Fleisch und Gemüse dauern ein bisschen länger. Dafür ist beides genau nach unserem Geschmack.

E | When it comes to food, we quickly realised how western we actually are. Although Tomo did everything to get us to try Japanese cuisine, we always politely declined. Whether it was raw prawns, clams or fish, we had to apologize, as half the group did not eat seafood. Miso soup, ramen or udon, the answer was always “yes please, but not for breakfast if at all possible.”

In the end, a Japanese self-service grill turned out to our favourite restaurant. Everyone was able to select what he or she wanted by touch screen.

Beer was on the table in 30 seconds, meat and vegetables took a bit longer, but were always prepared to our liking.

E | Our next stop was to the “Nordic Arena” of Otoineppu for cross-country skiing and the lesson learned is: Preparation is an elastic term. Although the groomer prepares the 5-kilometer route once in the morning and at noon, it is snowing all day long, the word dynamic takes on a whole new meaning.

D | Unser nächstes Ziel heißt Loipe und die Lektion, die wir in der „nordischen Arena“ von Otoineppu lernen, lautet: Präparierung ist ein dehnbarer Begriff.

Zwar fährt morgens und mittags das Spurgerät über die fünf Kilometer lange Strecke. Doch da es quasi den ganzen Tag schneit, bekommt das Wort Dynamik eine völlig neue Bedeutung.

E | Skate skiing in deep snow is incredibly exhausting and requires a lot of attention to form even from top cross-country skiers. After the first lap we are pleased with our performance even if we stumbled a few times along the way. But the exotic experience of skiing during a light snowfall through a jungle of green bamboo leaves just wasn’t enough to keep up motivated for another round.

D | Skating im Tiefschnee ist nicht nur brutal anstrengend, sondern erfordert selbst von guten Langläufern viel Geschick. Nach der ersten Runde sind wir schon froh, wenn wir nicht zu oft ins Straucheln geraten. Und außer dem exotischen Erlebnis, bei Schneetreiben durch einen Dschungel von grünen Bambusblättern zu laufen, hält uns eigentlich nichts auf der Loipe.

E | Fortunately the Japanese do not salt or plough their streets, they actually groom them instead. On the way to the hotel we realise the main street would actually be better suited for cross-country skiing than the designated trails and decide to strap on the skis and skate home. The looks on the local faces driving by were priceless, but we had a great time.

D | Wie gut, dass die Japaner ihre Straßen nicht räumen und salzen, sondern nur fräsen. Als wir auf dem Weg zum Hotel feststellen, dass sich die Hauptverkehrsader eigentlich besser zum Langlaufen eignen würde als die ausgewiesene Strecke, ist es um uns geschehen: Wir schnallen die Ski wieder an und skaten nach Hause. Was die einheimischen Autofahrer davon halten, ist ihren Gesichtern deutlich anzusehen. Aber wir haben Spaß. Und ein bisschen Spinnerei muss auch mal erlaubt sein.

E | Asahidake is our next stop and the lesson we learned that day is: Plans are never certain. A look at the weather map clearly showed that more snowfall was expected further north, and in the south the chance of being able to do a few more cross-country laps was much better. So, we spontaneously decided to turn around and drive straight to Niseko.

D | Unser nächstes Ziel heißt Asahidake und die Lektion, die wir heute lernen, lautet: Pläne sind dazu da, um umgeschmissen zu werden. Der Blick auf die Wetterkarte zeigt deutlich, dass wir weiter im Norden mit noch mehr Schneefall rechnen müssen. Im Süden stehen die Chancen, noch ein paar Langlauf-Runden drehen zu können, deutlich besser.

Also beschließen wir spontan, gleich nach Niseko zu fahren.

E | Niseko is probably the most famous ski resort on Hokkaido and is considered the epicentre of white gold. In the early days Australian mountain vagabonds only knew of it, however for the past several years the four ski resorts on Mt. Niseko-Annupuri have attracted freeriders from all over the world. Arriving there we find that everything looks more westernized and familiar to us. To be quite honest we were not sad about swapping out the tight hotel room for a cosy cabin where we could order scrambled eggs, cereal with fresh fruit, pancakes with Nutella and bananas instead of having soup for breakfast.

We were astonished to find only a short cross-country track in Niseko and asking around for other options we were always sent back to the ski lift. It took us a while before we realized that cross-country skiing is an exotic sport in Japan, but having brought our wider skis with us the gently sloping runs of Mt. Niseko began to look very inviting to us.

D | Das wahrscheinlich bekannteste Skiressort auf Hokkaido gilt als Zentrum des weißen Goldes: War der Ort früher noch fest in der Hand von australischen Skibums, so locken die vier Skigebiete am Mt. Niseko-Annupuri seit einigen Jahren Freerider aus aller Welt an. Entsprechend westlich und vertraut kommt uns hier plötzlich alles vor – und ehrlich gesagt sind wir auch gar nicht so traurig darüber, das enge Hotelzimmer gegen eine gemütliche Hütte zu tauschen und zum Frühstück statt Suppe Rühreier, Müsli mit frischem Obst und Pancakes mit Nutella und Bananen bestellen zu können.

Zu unserem großen Erstaunen finden wir auch in Niseko nur eine kurze Loipe und als wir nach anderen Möglichkeiten fragen, werden wir zum Skilift geschickt. Schön langsam begreifen wir, dass Langlauf in Japan wirklich eine exotische Sportart ist. Aber wir haben ja auch noch breitere Ski dabei und die sanft abfallenden Flanken des Mt. Niseko sehen wirklich einladend aus.

E | After lunch, we pack our bags and head out on a ski tour around the backside of the volcano. We’ve gotten used to the fact that it is snowing most of the day, every day, so the sight of big puffs of snow from our skis stamping uphill is not a surprise to us. Obviously the sun and some blue sky would make for a great photo, but Hokkaido’s real draw is the vast amount of the world’s finest powder and that snow obviously has to come from somewhere.

D | Nach dem Mittagessen packen wir unsere Rucksäcke und starten zu einer Skitour auf der Rückseite des Vulkans. Dass beim Losstapfen wieder eine große Schneewolke ihre Flocken abwirft, überrascht uns nicht mehr. Wir haben uns bereits daran gewöhnt, dass es die meiste Zeit des Tages schneit. Sonne und blauer Himmel wären natürlich schön fürs Foto. Doch nach Hokkaido reist man schließlich wegen der Unmengen an feinstem Pulverschnee. Und irgendwo muss er ja herkommen.

E | The ascent up Mt. Niseko leads on through a light birch grove. The icy branches of the trees show signs of which direction that last precipitation came from.

We feel as though we are in a magical forest and as we travel further up the trail a snow hare crosses our path. At this point the visibility is diminishing so we decide to stop and plan to ascend a second time instead. It was a good decision due to the contrast of the forest against the snow.

Carving between the trees and bamboo shoots in so much deep snow was an amazing time.

D | Der Aufstieg auf den Mt. Niseko führt durch ein lichtes Birkenwäldchen.

Am Anraum an den Bäumen ist gut zu erkennen, aus welcher Richtung die letzten Niederschläge kamen. Wir fühlen uns ein bisschen wie in einem Zauberwald und als wir etwas weiter oben in offeneres Gelände kommen, läuft uns ein Schneehase über den Weg. Da die Sicht auf den freien Hängen zu diffus ist, beschließen wir nicht weiter zu gehen, sondern stattdessen lieber ein zweites Mal aufzusteigen. Eine kluge Entscheidung, wie sich bei der Abfahrt herausstellt.

Im Wald ist der Kontrast gut und bei so viel Schnee macht das Slalomfahren zwischen Bäumen und Bambusblättern riesigen Spaß.

E | As we head back up for our second ascent the last lesson of our journey is learned: Expect the unexpected.

The snow gradually comes to a stop and as we move through the forest the clouds start to lift. Above the tree line the sun is shining and the skies clear, we can hardly believe our luck. Amazed we take in the warmth of the sun’s rays and the view to Mt. Yotei, affectionately called “Fuji” by the locals.

D | Als wir zum zweiten Mal auffellen, kündigt sich die letzte Lektion unserer Reise an, die da lautet: Unverhofft kommt oft. Der Schneefall lässt nach.

Während wir durch den Wald stapfen, wird es plötzlich heller. Und über der Baumgrenze empfängt uns Sonnenschein und freie Sicht. Wir können unser Glück kaum fassen. Staunend genießen wir die Wärme der Sonnenstrahlen und den Blick auf den gegenüberliegenden Mt. Yotei, der von den Einheimischen liebevoll „Fuji“ genannt wird.

E | “Japow� and sunshine, we simply could not ask for more. Celebrating that night or should we go skiing in the floodlight after a quick stop at a food truck are the questions we ask ourselves. From 7:00 pm the lifts will open again and the feeling of floating through virgin powder is too good to pass up.

Oder sollten wir nach der Einkehr beim Foodtruck noch ein bisschen Flutlicht-Powdern gehen? Ab 19 Uhr sperren die Lifte wieder auf … und das Gefühl, durch unverspurten Pulverschnee zu schweben, ist einfach zu gut.

What waste is this?

In regards to recycled nylon, industrial wastes from yarn production, carpets, packaging material or fishing nets are utilized. Spandex is recycled from garments and fabric remnants. Unlike PET bottles, which produce recycled polyester, there is no established recycling system for nylon and spandex. This makes the availability of recyclable raw materials more difficult.

Where does the raw material for Thermal Stretch ECO come from?

It comes from Europe and all raw materials are collected here. Nylon yarn is sent to Nurel in Spain for recycling and Spandex is sent to Asahi-Kasei in Germany before it is finally processed into fabric by Miti in Italy.

E | Starting this winter, for the first time we are using exclusively a new stretch material that is made completely from recycled raw materials. Textile engineer and Maloja head of production Sven Köhler tells us the story behind.

What is the upside for the environment?

Until now there has been no use for the waste and now it can be used again and furthermore reprocessed. Previously it would have all ended up in the garbage. As an example, recycling nylon waste reduces CO2 emissions by 53 percent. In the production of recycled spandex 75 percent of energy is saved compared to conventional spandex. Additionally there is less consumption of chemicals and fewer impurities in the water.

Last but not least, the fabric is bluesign® certified, which means that it is subject to the world’s strictest textile standard for environmental, labour and consumer protection.

When developing products, we are always looking for environmentally friendly materials. Finding these materials is not always easy, especially for functional garments. Therefore it is increasingly important that textile manufacturers like our partner MITI from Italy dedicate their production entirely to the development of environmentally friendly materials. Needless to say we were immediately impressed, when MITI Tech showed us Thermal Stretch ECO from their new Green Soul collection.

Why? For the first time, Thermal Stretch ECO, which is a brushed, stretchy fabric, is made from 100% recycled materials, recycled nylon (83%) and recycled spandex (17%). Producing in this way meant that waste that was previously unusable was made usable and ultimately material that earlier on would have been waste has been transformed into a premium product.

In which products is Thermal Stretch ECO used?

In the current autumn/winter collection 2019 we use Thermal Stretch ECO in 31 products, specifically in biking and cross-country skiing garments. In the photos you are able to view the hybrid items for the ladies CrestaM. and AlpinaM. as well as for the men BeppinM. and CorvatschM.

D | Ab diesem Winter verwenden wir erstmals und exklusiv einen StretchStoff, der komplett aus recycelten Rohstoffen besteht. Textilingenieur und Maloja Produktionsleiter Sven Köhler erzählt, wie es dazu kam.

Bei der Entwicklung von Produkten sind wir immer auf der Suche nach umweltfreundlicheren Materialien. Diese zu finden ist aber gar nicht so leicht – vor allem für den Funktionsbereich.

Umso wichtiger ist es, dass sich Stoffhersteller wie unser Partner Miti aus Italien ganz der Entwicklung von umweltfreundlicheren Materialien verschrieben haben. Als sie uns von Thermal Stretch ECO aus ihrer neuen Green Soul Linie erzählten, waren wir sofort begeistert.

Warum?

Mit Thermal Stretch ECO gibt es erstmals einen gerauten Stretch-Stoff, der zu 100 Prozent aus wiederverwerteten Rohstoffen, also aus recyceltem Nylon (83 %) und recyceltem Elasthan (17 %), besteht. So werden bisher nicht nutzbare Abfälle nutzbar gemacht – und am Ende entstehen aus Müll Premium-Produkte.

Um welche Abfälle handelt es sich dabei?

Für recyceltes Nylon werden industrielle Abfälle aus der Garnherstellung, Teppiche, Verpackungsmaterial oder Fischernetze verwendet.

Das Elasthan wird aus Kleidungsstücken und Stoffresten recycelt. Anders als bei PET-Flaschen, aus denen recyceltes Polyester entsteht, gibt es für Nylon und Elasthan noch kein etabliertes Recycling-System. Das erschwert die Verfügbarkeit der wiederverwertbaren Rohware.

Woher stammt das Rohmaterial für Thermal Stretch ECO? Aus Europa. Alle Rohstoffe werden hier gesammelt, in Spanien von Nurel zu Nylon-, in Deutschland von Asahi-Kasei zu Elasthan-Garn recycelt und in Italien von Miti zu Stoff verarbeitet.

Was hat die Umwelt davon?

Bisher gab es keine Verwendung für die Abfälle, die nun neu aufbereitet wieder genutzt werden können. Sie wären schlicht auf dem Müll gelandet. Durch das Recycling von Nylonabfällen reduziert sich beispielsweise der CO2-Ausstoß um 53 Prozent. Bei der Herstellung von recyceltem Elasthan wird im Vergleich zu herkömmlichem Elasthan 75 Prozent an Energie eingespart. Dazu kommen ein geringerer Verbrauch an Chemikalien und weniger Verunreinigungen im Wasser.

Und nicht zuletzt ist der Stoff bluesign® zertifiziert – das heißt, dass er dem weltweit strengsten textilen Standard für Umwelt-, Arbeits- und Verbraucherschutz unterliegt.

In welchen Produkten wird Thermal Stretch ECO eingesetzt?

E | How do you approach new product development?

Many of our products are created through feedback from professional athletes such as the German National Ski Mountaineering team. Athletes know exactly what they need for their sport, what works and what doesn’t work, all down to the smallest detail.

We also incorporate our knowledge of the sport, but above all we have a lot of input into the ideal materials and the production possibilities. In addition, through VioModa our own production facility in Bulgaria we have the opportunity to try out and test new technologies before bringing them to market.

What is the driving force behind new products?

Whenever possible we strive to develop products that support athletes sport performance. Despite all the focus on performance and function, Maloja’s design aesthetic also plays a very important role.

Athletes should truly enjoy wearing the not only functional, but also stylish products that we produce.

What does a recreational athlete have to gain from the premium performance products such as the race suit from the national ski mountaineering team?

Certainly, the demands of professionals can differ to some extent from recreational athletes. Nevertheless, we all benefit from the experience drawn from elite sports that are applied to the development of Maloja’s functional collection. For example, a world cup athlete spends most of their time training, and what they wear during training is usually well received by recreational athletes.

Are there any new products in the current collection that have emerged from the cooperation with the national ski mountaineering team?

The Velvet Stretch combination (see Lookbook page 102 and page 124) is a warmer variation on the race suit from the national ski mountaineering team. The outfit was designed for uphill touring and is also a great choice for evening ski touring to the local mountain hut.

Integrated solutions taken from the race suit are the quick-lock boot closure system,

a double layer of material over the knees, reinforced shoulders, fleece lined pockets, a pouch for an avalanche beacon and a mesh back insert that increases ventilation. Rounding out the combination we have the jacket that came about a few years back based on athlete’s feedback for the ideal ski touring jacket. This jacket combines Windstopper and Stretch Fleece materials as well it has an integrated storm mask attached to the hood (see Lookbook page 105 and page 125). Often worn by cross-country skiers it is also a favourite “go-to” piece of the Maloja staff.

D | Wie geht Ihr an die Entwicklung neuer Produkte heran?

Viele unserer Produkte entstehen im Dialog mit Profis wie zum Beispiel den Athleten der Deutschen Nationalmannschaft Skibergsteigen.

Sie wissen sehr genau, was sie für ihren Sport brauchen. Und sie können bis in kleinste Details erklären, was in der Praxis funktioniert und was nicht. Wir bringen unsere eigenen Erfahrungen aus dem Sport ein – aber vor allem verfügen wir über viel Knowhow was Materialien und Verarbeitungsmöglichkeiten angeht. Außerdem haben wir durch VioModa, unseren eigenen Produktionsbetrieb in Bulgarien, immer wieder die Möglichkeit, neue Technologien auszuprobieren.

Was treibt Euch bei der Arbeit an neuen Produkten an?

Wir wollen immer Produkte entwickeln, die einen Athleten bei der Ausübung seines Sports so gut wie möglich unterstützen. Bei allem Anspruch an die Funktion genießt bei Maloja aber auch das Design einen sehr hohen Stellenwert. Die Athleten sollen wirklich eine Freude daran haben, funktionelle und stylische Sachen zu tragen. Sie sollen unsere Produkte richtig gerne anhaben.

des Rennanzugs der Skibergsteiger Nationalmannschaft. Sie wurde für aufstiegsorientierte Unternehmungen konzipiert und eignet sich auch sehr gut für die abendliche Skitour auf eine Hütte.

Lösungen wie das Quick-Lock-System für den Skischuh-Verschluss, doppeltes Material an den Knien, verstärkte Schultern, Felltaschen, eine LVSTasche sowie ein atmungsaktiver Rückeneinsatz wurden vom Rennanzug übernommen. Ebenfalls im Dialog mit Athleten ist bereits vor einigen Jahren eine Jacke entstanden, bei der wir Windstopperund Stretch-Fleece-Materialien kombiniert haben.

Das ursprünglich zum Skitourengehen entwickelte Produkt mit integrierter Sturmmaske in der Kapuze (siehe Lookbook S. 105 und S. 125) wird auch gerne beim Langlaufen getragen und gehört unter Maloja Mitarbeitern ganz klar in die Kategorie „Lieblingsteil“.

Was lässt sich aus High-End-Produkten wie dem Rennanzug für die Skibergsteiger Nationalmannschaft auf Bekleidung für Freizeitsportler ableiten?

Natürlich weichen die Anforderungen der Profis in manchen Bereichen von denen der Breitensportler ab. Trotzdem profitieren wir bei der Entwicklung von Funktionsprodukten für die Maloja Kollektion von den Erfahrungen aus dem Spitzensport. Ein Weltcup-Athlet verbringt die meiste Zeit mit Training. Was er dabei gerne trägt, kommt meistens auch beim Freizeitsportler gut an.

Gibt es in der aktuellen Kollektion neue Produkte, die vor diesem Hintergrund entstanden sind?

Die Velvet-Stretch-Kombination (siehe Lookbook S. 102 und S. 124) ist eine wärmere Abwandlung

OUTOFOFFICE E | Once upon a time there was a man who had a dream: his dream was to combine life and work. In winter to spend as many days as possible, enjoying deep powder followed by heading to the office in his ski pants.

E | He knew that most dreams don’t come true on their own so he started his own sportswear company. The concept was to limit the product offering to a summer collection because in winter he had other plans.

And so it began and in the early years of the company the office hours were directly dependent on the weather forecast. As soon as the words “Cold Front” or “Heavy Snowfall” were muttered, work would be postponed for the following days. It was clear to all involved that the work program was a trip to Hochfügen. Over the years the company founder spent so many days snowboarding that he called the entrance to the freeride mecca Zillertal his “home mountain”. This could be considered true as he was always there first thing in the morning because he knew later in the day first tracks would be hard to come by.

Employees from the early days of the company still rave about the winters, in which a small crew went out together and the boss occasionally made business calls from the lift.

It went without saying that you came to the office in ski pants after the “real work” was done.

Two years after the company was founded the bosses’ plans were thwarted: customers simply liked the summer products so much they were demanding a winter collection to dress year-round in. The idea grew on him, as it was appealing to be in the snow with his own gear, although the time outdoors would become rare.

It has been 14 years since the early days of the company. Today the company is well staffed through the winter months, but there are still days when employees with ski pants on march through the office doors to work and that is exactly how it should be.

PS: The man with the dream is Peter Räuber, he is the visionary and co-founder of Maloja. A few years back he made the switch from snowboarding to cross-country skiing. Since then you will never find him in the office on a Wednesday afternoon, but rather on one of the Chiemgau trails.

KOMMEN GLEICH WIEDER …

D | Es war einmal ein Mann, der hatte einen Traum: Er wollte Leben und Arbeiten verbinden. Im Winter möglichst viele Tage im Tiefschnee verbringen. Und in der Skihose ins Büro kommen können.

Weil Träume meistens nicht von selbst wahr werden, gründete er eine Firma für Sportmode. Er beschloss, das Angebot auf eine Sommerkollektion zu beschränken. Im Winter hatte er schließlich anderes vor.

Und so begab es sich, dass in den Anfangsjahren der Firma die Bürozeiten in direktem Zusammenhang mit dem Wetterbericht standen. Sobald die Wörter „Nordstaulage“ oder „ergiebige Schneefälle“ erklangen, wurden Termine für die nächsten Tage verschoben. Denn es war klar, was dann auf dem Programm stand: Ein Ausflug nach Hochfügen.

Dort hatte der Firmengründer im Laufe seines Lebens so viele Tage auf dem Snowboard verbracht, dass er das Freeride-Revier am Eingang des Zillertals seinen „Hausberg“ nannte. Und er wusste: Rechtzeitig da sein ist wichtig. Denn spätestens mittags sind unverspurte Hänge nur noch schwer zu finden.

Mitarbeiter aus der Anfangszeit der Firma schwärmen noch heute von den Wintern, in denen die kleine Crew gemeinsam ausrückte und der Chef Geschäftstelefonate gelegentlich vom Lift aus führte. Dass man nach „getaner Arbeit“ in der Skihose im Büro einlief, versteht sich von selbst.

Zwei Jahre nach Gründung der Firma wurden die Pläne des Chefs jäh durchkreuzt: Den Kunden gefiel die Sommerware so gut, dass sie sich auch im Winter mit Produkten der Firma einkleiden wollten. Und irgendwie war es ja auch reizvoll, in den eigenen Sachen im Tiefschnee unterwegs zu sein … wenn auch deutlich seltener.

Seit diesen Begebenheiten sind vierzehn Jahre vergangen. Und auch wenn die Firma heute im Winter durchgängig gut besetzt ist – Tage, an denen Mitarbeiter mit der Skihose ins Büro kommen, gibt es noch immer. Genau so soll es schließlich sein.

PS: Der Mann mit dem Traum heißt Peter Räuber. Er ist Ideengeber und Mit-Gründer von Maloja. Vor ein paar Jahren stieg er vom Snowboard auf Langlaufski um. Seitdem trifft man ihn im Winter am Mittwochnachmittag nie im Büro, dafür aber auf einer der Chiemgauer Loipen an.

THE LEAF HUNT E | In mid-September when the days in the Alps become shorter, the sun sits a bit lower and cobwebs float through the air, “Koharu” (Little Spring), begins in Japan. Also referred to as “Indian Summer” in Japan, this time is a prelude to a beautiful display of colour. Nature seems to rethink before the approaching winter and shows its beauty in all its splendour on the leaves of trees.

E | Momiji or Kouyou, refers to the colourful leaves of autumn, they are celebrated similarly to the cherry blossom bloom of spring. The weather report on TV provides updates of the current state of colour and dedicated websites publish skyrocketing visitor clicks. Twitter and Instagram are in on the game with posts showing Acorn, Gingko and other varieties of trees in every imaginable shades of colour.

Although the Momijigari or Kouyougari walks had been traditionally reserved for the noble and upper class, over time citizens from all walks of life have begun to visit the beautiful landscapes to admire the splendour of the changing autumn leaves. Today, between the months of September and December nearly the entire country, from north to south sets out to view nature’s beauty.

D | Mitte September, wenn im Alpenraum die Tage kürzer werden, die Sonne tiefer steht und Spinnweben durch die Luft schweben, beginnt in Japan „Koharu“, der „kleine Frühling“. Was bei uns „Altweibersommer“ genannt wird, ist in Japan das Vorspiel für eine ganz besondere Zeit: die der bunten Blätter. Die Natur scheint sich vor dem nahenden Winter noch einmal aufzubäumen. Sie zeigt sich in ihrer ganzen Pracht. Und in den schönsten Farben.

Momiji oder Kouyou, die bunten Blätter des Herbstlaubs, versetzen Japan in einen ähnlichen Ausnahmezustand wie die Kirschblüten im Frühling. Der Wetterbericht im Fernsehen informiert über den aktuellen Stand der Verfärbung, auf speziellen Webseiten schnellen die Klickzahlen in die Höhe und auf Twitter und Instagram sind Ahorn, Gingko & Co in den verschiedensten Farbschattierungen zu sehen.

Wer Zeit hat, strebt hinaus. Auf Berge und in Wälder. An Flüsse und Seen. In Gärten und Parks. Zu Tempeln und Schreinen. „Momijigari“, Rote-Blätter-Jagd, oder „Kouyougari“, „Herbstlaub-Jagd, nennen sich die Ausflüge, bei denen die Japaner die bunte Verfärbung bewundern. Diese Streifzüge durch die Natur sind fest verankert in der japanischen Kultur, in der die Jahreszeiten eine große Rolle spielen – und das schon seit Jahrhunderten.

War der Momijigari- oder Kouyougari-Spaziergang anfangs noch dem Adel und gehobenen Kreisen vorbehalten, so begannen später auch die Bürger besonders schöne Orte aufzusuchen, um die Pracht der herbstlich verfärbten Blätter zu bewundern. Heute ist zwischen September und Dezember fast das ganze Land zwischen Norden und Süden unterwegs.

Denn wie die kurze Zeit der Kirschblüte im Frühling erinnert auch die Schönheit des Herbstlaubs an den Wandel und die Vergänglichkeit alles Irdischen. Und genauso wie das leuchtende Rosa hebt auch das intensive Farbenspiel aus Gelb, Orange und tiefem Rot die Laune der Menschen und führt sie zusammen – um gemeinsam Zeit in der Natur zu verbringen.

E | Saturday night is primetime. In Milan, the time is drawing near and hell is about to break loose on the otherwise quiet streets of the Bovisa district. Hundreds of cyclists from all over the world have arrived with thousands of spectators coming out to witness the final race at this year’s Red Hook Crit series. The crowd is lined in front of the track barrier and stacked further behind one another on the temporary race bleachers and those that cannot find room below have climbed the walls of adjacent buildings just to catch a glimpse of the action. The noise of the cheering spectators is deafening and the tension in the air feels like it could be cut with a knife.

E | The Red Hook Crit has developed enormously over the last decade. Originally it was an illegal road race with a lot of punk attitude and today it has become the unofficial world championship of the fixed gear-racing criterion.

The Crits recipe to success is based on it being an extremely friendly spectator event with a diverse field of participants that span from bicycle courier to the professional road cyclist and of course the wild parties after each race. What really stands out for this race is the unique and colourful mix of people from different countries, cultures, religions and cycling disciplines.

Despite its world-class standing, the registration is open to anyone, provided they have a few screws loose and nerves of steel. One needs to think like this to just make it thought this hard-fought race on a relatively tight circuit. Due to the quick, short distance of the race and the many corners, ongoing strong braking followed by explosive attacks, are expected.

There is no room for a roll at the start or the

mindset of a tactical pace, these simply do not exist rather the racer is constantly redlined.

Every race is simply, insanely fast, but that’s not all. At Red Hook the racers compete on track bikes, these are bikes with one fixed gear and no hand brakes. No brakes! The only chance to slow down is by countering pedalling backward making it possible to reduce speed, but abrupt braking/skidding is prohibited. With up to a hundred racers on the track at one time dangerous situations are inevitable and often times unavoidable. In addition to fast and enduring legs, the Red Hook Crit also requires sound control of the bike and above all, no fear of body contact. The race is unbelievably exhilarating and without a doubt addictive.

D | Samstagabend zur Primetime.

In Mailand dämmert es bereits und auf den sonst eher ruhigen Straßen des Stadtteils Bovisa ist die Hölle los.

Hunderte von Radfahrerinnen und Radfahrern aus der ganzen Welt sind angereist, tausende Zuschauer gekommen, um das letzte Rennen der diesjährigen Red Hook Crit Serie mitzuerleben. Sie drängen sich in mehreren Reihen vor der Streckenabsperrung, stapeln sich auf den speziell für das Spektakel aufgebauten Tribünen und sind sogar auf die Mauern der anliegenden Gebäude geklettert. Der Lärmpegel der jubelnden Zuschauer ist ohrenbetäubend. Die Spannung, die in der Luft liegt, fast körperlich spürbar.

Das Red Hook Crit hat sich in den letzten zehn Jahren enorm entwickelt. Vom ursprünglich illegalen Straßenrennen mit Punk-Charakter ist es mittlerweile zur inoffiziellen Weltmeisterschaft im Fixed Gear Kriterium Fahren geworden. Sein Erfolgsrezept beruht auf dem extrem zuschauerfreundlichen Format, dem vielfältigen Fahrerfeld vom Fahrradkurier bis hin zum Vollprofi sowie den wilden Partys nach jedem Rennen. Was es aber wirklich einzigartig macht, ist die bunte Mischung an Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen, Religionen, Radsportbereichen und Nationalitäten, die es zusammenbringt. Trotz seines Weltklasse-Niveaus ist die Anmeldung offen für jeden – vorausgesetzt er hat Nerven aus Stahl.

Die braucht man für die hart umkämpften Fahrradrennen auf einem relativ engen Rundkurs. Durch die knackig kurze Streckenlänge und die vielen Kurven wechseln sich starke Bremsmanöver und explosionsartige Antritte kontinuierlich ab. Ein Einrollen zu Beginn oder taktisches Tempo zwischendrin gibt es nicht, der Puls der Fahrer ist konstant im roten Bereich. Jedes Rennen läuft wahnsinnig schnell ab. Aber das ist noch lange nicht alles. Denn

beim Red Hook Crit treten die Fahrer auf Bahnrädern an, also auf Rädern mit nur einem starren Gang und ohne Bremsen – ja, genau: ohne Bremsen! Allein über das Rückwärtstreten – Kontern – ist es möglich, die Geschwindigkeit zu reduzieren, abruptes Bremsen – Skidden – ist verboten. Bei bis zu hundert Fahrern gleichzeitig auf der Strecke sind gefährliche Situationen vorprogrammiert.
