We love these moments because they stand for the connectedness of people and nature . Togeth er with the positive energy genera ted by the empathet ic interaction of like-mi nded people, they form the founda tions of Maloja and the basis for a self-confident journey. E To the south you have the bustlin g waterfront. The fjord snakes its way to Aker Brygge, Oslo's moder n harbor quarte r, for 100 kilometers from the North Sea. In all other directi ons, Norway’s capita l with its 650,00 0 reside nts is surrou nded by the Marka , a wild, picturesque expan se of hills adorned with picturesq ue lakes, small huts and countless birch and pine trees.

After we went to explore the superb locks of Barcelona in summe r, we wanted to head north in wintertime . Quite a few Maloja colleagues have been raving about Oslo for years. About the city’s sporty vibe, the iconic Holme nkollen and the many gravel routes . Yet also about its cultura l richness, the coffee scene, its divers ity and its progressive mindset. We wanted to trace this spirit and explore the city, which was award ed European Green Capita l in 2019 and ranked first in Arcadi s' Sustain able Cities Index in 2022.

Hardly any other city in Europe is curren tly developing as rapidly as Oslo, always balanc ing tradition and transfo rmatio n. It connects city and nature, business and leisure , the old and the new. Strollin g along the waterf ront (with a warm cinnam on bun in your hand), you will encou nter runner s and tourists, folks in suits – and people in bathro bes headin g to one of the colorful, woode n raft sauna s near the famous Nation al Opera .

D Im Süden blickt man auf die Wellen des Fjordes, der sich lang und schmal über 100 Kilometer von der Nordsee heraufstreckt und hier in Aker Brygge endet, dem modernen Hafenviertel von Oslo. In alle anderen Himmelsrichtungen ist die 650.000 Einwohner-Stadt von der Marka umzingelt, einer wilden, hügeligen Landschaft, mit malerischen Seen, kleinen Hütten und zahllosen Birken und Kiefern.

Nachdem es uns im Sommer in die Superblock-Stadt Barcelona gezogen hatte, wollten wir im Winter in den Norden. Einige Maloja Kolleg:innen schwärmen seit Jahren von Oslo. Von der Sportlichkeit" der " Stadt, vom Holmenkollen und den Radstrecken, aber auch von der Kultur und dem Kaffee, der Vielfalt und dem Blick nach vorne. Wir wollten diesem Geist nachspüren und die Stadt erkunden, die 2019 als European Green Capital ausgezeichnet wurde und 2022 im Sustainable Cities Index von Arcadis auf Platz 1 landete.

Kaum eine Stadt in Europa entwickelt sich derzeit so rasant wie Oslo, stets darauf bedacht die Balance zwischen Tradition und Transformation zu halten .

Hier verbindet sich Urbanität mit Naturnähe, Business mit Freizeit, Alt mit Neu. Wer mit der lauwarmen Zimtschnecke in der Hand am Ufer entlang schlendert, dem begegnen unweit der berühmten Nationaloper Läufer und Touristen, Leute im Anzug und Leute im Bademantel, die zu einer der bunten, aus Brettern gezimmerten Floßsaunen schlappen.

You can hike up the marble roof of the opera house – it is intend ed to remind you of climbing a mountain: if Norway's nature is free to explore, then why not one of the city's most striking buildin gs?

From up here, you can see how manifo ld this town is: the time-h onored buildin gs, the small stores , the king's palace, the skyline with ultra-m odern buildings and, in the distan ce, the undula ting hilly landscape that makes Oslo a dream for gravel riders – and to which we were drawn quickly (find out more on page 36).

Auf das Marmordach der Oper kann man hinaufspazieren wie auf einen Berg, denn – so meinten die Architekten – wenn die Natur Norwegens frei zugänglich ist, warum dann nicht auch eines der markantesten Gebäude der Stadt?! Von hier oben sieht man Oslo mit all seinen Facetten: die altehrwürdigen Gebäude, die kleinen Shops, den Palast des Königs, die Skyline mit hochmodernen Bauten und die Reihen an bemalten Holzhäuschen. In der Ferne die wellige Hügellandschaft, die Oslo zu einer Gravel-Hochburg macht – und in die es uns bald zieht (mehr erfahrt ihr ab Seite 36).

Back from the viewpoint, we reflect on why this place struck such a note with us in the evening light at the harbor. It has an exceptional quality of life. It embraces the future. And its people love being active. Running, cycling and in wintertime, of course, cross-country skiing. As soon as the first snow hits the ground, the Osloites get in their XC ski gear, and take the tram to Holmenkollen. But above all, it was probably the easy coexistence of these different trends.

Die hohe Lebensqualitä t, der Blick nach vorne, die Menschen, die immer draußen zu sein scheinen – laufend , fahrrad fahren d und im Winter natürlich auf Skiern. Aber vor allem ist es wohl auch dieses Neben - und Miteina nder dieser untersc hiedlic hen Strömu ngen.

The Swiss company is known for its strict safety and environmental requirements. Thus, they ensure the absence of substances harmful to the environment or our health. In case they detect questionable ingredients, they recommend harmless alternatives to the suppliers. The team also helps achieving maximum resource productivity as well as optimizing energy and water management, such as properly functioning wastewater treatment.

As a bluesign® partner, we can align our supply chain and focus on fibers and materials that are already bluesign® approved. For our products to be certified, at least 90% of the fabric must meet the bluesign® criteria.

E The Nordmarka unfolds just 10 kilometers from the city center od Oslo, boasting (as they say) "the finest network of trails near a city worldwide". It encompasses 1,200 km of gravel and asphalt routes and numerous lakes. For those accustomed to the Alps, Nordmarka proves to be an almost surreal experience: vast openness, solitude, immense expanses, and lakes in a multitude of shades and colors. The days we spend in this landscape are intense and moving - days that will resonate for a long time.

D Keine 10 Kilometer vom Osloer Zentrum entfernt beginnt die Nordmarka und damit – so sagt man – das " beste Streckennetz in Stadtnähe weltweit" mit 1.200 km an Gravel- und Straßenrouten und unzählige Seen.

Für uns, die wir die Alpen gewohnt sind, ein fast schon unwirklicher Anblick: Die Offenheit, die Einsamkeit, die immense Weite und die sich scheinbar stapelnden Seen in ihren unterschiedlichen Höhenlagen und Farbtönen.

E Despite all the technological advances, when it comes to loftiness or warmth-to-weight ratio Mother Nature is still unrivalled: nothing will keep you as warm while being so light as down. No wonder we use the fluffy filling in our apparel – a very special fluffy filling: since 2019, we are exclusively using Re:Down.

Eric Firmann had been working in the textile industry for decades before co-founding Re:Down motivated by the fact that down – this precious natural resource – was disposed of, although it was still in good condition and its lifespan could be easily extended. Thus, he started a company dedicated to upcycling down and feathers. Because unlike the textile shell, they are tough and durable and can be re-processed.

“At Re:Down we recycle down and feathers from post-consumer goods with the goal to give all its components a second life. We find the right use depending on the quality: e.g., high-quality down for jackets, medium filling for bedding and feathers for cushions or decoration articles. We pass the fabric shell on to a specialist that turns it into non-woven insulation.”

Thus, Re:Down has established an upcycling process: they collect used bedding, sleeping bags and jackets, extract the filling, separate, wash, dry and sterilize it chemical free. Damaged down and feathers are turned into an organic fertilizer. While the material that passes the quality test is upcycled into the high-quality insulation which you can find in our products.

So hat Re:Down einen Kreislauf etabliert: Gesammelt werde n etwa Bettwa ren, Schlafsäcke und Jacken , aus denen das Füllma terial entnom men, sortier t, gewaschen, getrocknet und (chemi efrei) sterilisi ert wird. E Despite all our enthus iasm for sportin g activit ies in the snow, we must not forget how much nature is being changed by global warmi ng. July 6, 2023, marked the hottest day in global average ever record ed. And it is not just since last year that we have noticed that season s are shifting and winters are becom ing milder and shorte r.

At Maloja , we ask ourselves every day how we as a manufacture r can protec t our planet and conser ve resources while also adapt ing our collect ions to changi ng condit ions. Our Glide & Ride collect ion is one answe r. A specia l produc t line, that works perfectly on the bike as well as on the track, a line that is not limited to one season or one sport. You can use the pieces whenever it gets colder - wheth er cross- countr y skiing in the snow- covere d landscape , on the trail in spring or when the weath er changes on the mountain in late summe r.

D Bei all unser Begeisterung für sportliche Aktivitäten im Schnee dürfen wir nicht verkennen, wie sehr die Natur durch die Erderwärmung in Bewegung gerät.

Der 06. Jul i 2023 war im globalen Durchschnitt der wärmste Tag seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen .

Und nicht erst seit dem letzten Jahr müssen wir feststellen, dass sich Jahreszeiten verschieben und gleichzeitig die Winter milder und kürzer werden.

Bei Maloja stellen wir uns jeden Tag die Frage, wie wir als Hersteller einerseits unsere Erde schützen und Ressourcen schonen können und andererseits unsere Kollektionen auf die veränderten Bedingungen anpassen müssen. Unsere Glide & Ride Kollektion ist eine unserer Antworten. Eine spezielle Produktlinie, die sowohl auf dem Bike wie in der Loipe perfekt funktioniert und sich nicht mehr auf eine Jahreszeit oder eine Sportart festschreiben lässt.

Es sind Teile, die bei kälteren Temperaturen stets im Einsatz sind – ob beim Langlaufen in der tiefverschneiten Landschaft, auf dem Trail im Frühjahr oder beim Wetterumschwung am Berg im Spätsommer.

E It’s a sustainability topic that is often overlooked by the media: every day, manufacturing facilities around the globe generate tons of fabric leftovers.

Around 15–20% of the material are destined for disposal sites like incineration plants. While it is impossible to avoid fabric scraps, it is not impossible to reuse them.

To learn about the process of producing high-tech insulation for functional garments from upcycled leftovers, you have to make your way to northern Italy – or more specifically to Cittadella, a town with a population of 20,000 located near Venice.

This is the home of Imbotex, a family business devoted to upcycling waste materials for almost 70 years.

In 1955, the father of the current CEO Stefania embarked on a project to create filling materials for mattresses, utilizing excess textiles from nearby production sites. "Seeing scraps as a valuable resource was ingrained in us from a young age," Stefania says.

Further steps followed in the 1990s with the growing awareness of sustainability.

Imbotex explored ways to recycle fabrics made from cashmere, yak, and alpaca, resulting in the first renditions of the filling material used today.

The founding of the Imbotex Lab in 2019 marked a significant breakthrough with the invention of a new process to achieve insulation that can rival the leading solutions available in terms of breathability, quick-drying and insulating properties. Plus: the process does not involve any chemicals and consumes zero water.

For our 2024 winter collection, Imbotex premiers with a new insulation material under the exclusive Cambium Up brand reusing fabric scraps collected in our manufacturing sites. This is a major step for us, as we have succeeded in upcycling our own leftover material into products and thus closing the loop.

Zwisch en 15% und 20% liegt der Anteil der Reststo ffe, die meist ihren Weg in Entsorgungsbetriebe wie Müllver brennu ngsanl agen finden. Verme iden lassen sich diese Schnittabfälle nicht, die Entsorgung als Müll aber sehr wohl.

Wer wissen will, wie mit einem neuen Verfah ren aus Reststoffen ein High-Tech Isolatio nsmate rial für Funktio nsbekl eidung entsteh t, der muss den Weg nach Norditalien machen, genauer gesagt nach Cittadella , einer 20.000 Einwoh ner-Sta dt unweit von Vened ig. Dort ist die Firma Imbotex beheim atet, ein Familie nunter nehme n, das sich seit fast 70 Jahren mit der Verwe rtung von übersc hüssige m Materi al beschä ftigt.

Begonn en hat alles 1955 als der Vater der heutige n Geschä ftsführe rin Stefania damit began n, Reststoffe aus den umliegenden Produk tionen zu Füllmaterialien für Matratzen wieder zuverwerten . Uns ist das Bewusstsein " für Schnittreste als wertvo lle Ressource praktisch in die Wiege gelegt worde n," sagt Stefania heute.

Weitere Schritte folgten dann ab den 90er Jahren , als das Thema Nachha ltigkeit einen höhere n Stellenwert einnahm. Imbotex began n an der Wiede rverwe rtung von Stoffen aus Cashm ere, Yak und Alpaca zu forschen und produz ierte die ersten Version en des heutige n Füllmaterials. Der große Durchb ruch folgte 2019 mit der Gründ ung des Imbotex Lab und der Entwicklung eines neuen Verfah rens, aus dem sich Isolationsmaterial gewinnen lässt, das sich in puncto Atmungsaktivi tät, Schnel ltrockn ung und Isoliereigens chafte n mit den besten Lösungen auf dem Markt messe n lassen kann. Ein weitere r Pluspu nkt: Das Verfah ren kommt ohne Wasse r und Chemikalien aus.

Für Maloja produz iert Imbotex erstma lig für die Winter kollekt ion 2024 ein neues Isolatio nsmate rial unter der Exklusivmarke Cambi um Up aus Restoffen unserer Produktionsbetriebe. Es ist ein großer Schritt für uns, da es uns so gelingt, Schnittabfälle direkt in unsere r Bekleid ung wiede rzuver werten und den Kreisla uf zu schließen.
