EN | “Soul in the Woods” was the name of the first Maloja collection. For us, it’s always stood for what we love so much: having an outdoorsy, nature-exploring attitude to life. Spending good times together. And, last but not least, going our own way – always and forever.

DE | „Soul in the Woods“ lautete der Titel der ersten Maloja-Kollektion. Für uns steht er bis heute für das, was wir selbst so sehr lieben: Das Lebensgefühl, draußen in der Natur unterwegs zu sein.

Gemeinsam eine gute Zeit zu verbringen. Und nicht zuletzt eigene Wege zu gehen – immer und immer wieder.

But “Soul in the Woods” wasn’t just the theme of our first collection. This phrase has been with us for over 15 years. It’s become Maloja’s slogan and the guiding principle behind everything we do. It’s a constant reminder of where we came from, how we started, what’s important, and what we stand for. And that we always want to maintain one thing in amongst all our professionalism and progress: the "soul".

„Soul in the Woods“ war aber nicht nur das Thema der ersten Kollektion. Der Satz begleitet uns seit über 15 Jahren – er wurde zum Slogan von Maloja und zum Leitmotiv unseres Tuns. Er erinnert uns immer wieder daran, wo wir herkommen, wie wir angefangen haben, was uns wichtig ist und wofür wir stehen. Und dass wir uns bei aller Professionalität und Weiterentwicklung eines immer erhalten wollen: den „Soul“.

The idea of naming this collection “Soul in the Woods” a second time has a totally different origin, however. The phrase doesn’t just stand for everything we’ve just mentioned. Going deeper, it also speaks about the “soul” of the forests and the wisdom of the trees: they prefer cooperation and friendship over competition.

They know that all of them can only live happy, healthy lives when they adapt to the circumstances and support each other. In their finely interconnected social system, it’s not quick solutions that count, but long-term ones that benefit everyone. Trees care about the common good and ensure their offspring are also cared for.

There’s no need for hierarchies here. A forest is a place of opportunity. A world where every single individual’s potential contributes to the good of them all. A society that thrives on cooperation, creativity and diversity. Trees deal with almost every challenge you can think of – together.

Die Idee, diese Kollektion noch einmal „Soul in the Woods“ zu nennen, hat aber noch einen ganz anderen Hintergrund: Der Satz steht nicht nur für alles, was wir damit verbinden. Bei tieferer Betrachtung erzählt er auch vom „Soul“ der Wälder und von der Weisheit der Bäume: Sie leben Kooperation und Freundschaft statt Konkurrenz.

Sie wissen, dass ein gutes, gesundes Leben für alle nur möglich ist, wenn sie sich an die Gegebenheiten anpassen und sich gegenseitig unterstützen. In ihrem fein verwobenen Sozialsystem zählt nicht der schnelle Erfolg, sondern das, was lange von Bestand und für alle gut ist. Bäume kümmern sich um das Gemeinwohl und sorgen dafür, dass auch gut für ihre Nachkommen gesorgt ist. Hierarchien braucht es nicht: Ein Wald ist ein Ort der Möglichkeiten, eine Welt, in der das individuelle Potenzial von jedem Einzelnen zum Wohle aller beiträgt, eine Gemeinschaft, die von der Kooperation, der Kreativität und der Vielfalt lebt. Bäume bewältigen beinahe alles, was an Herausforderungen denkbar ist – miteinander.

We think the theme of “together” is more topical than ever. And the trees’ message can be applied to almost any area of life. The forest is a perfect example of how wonderful life can be when brotherhood, solidarity, diversity and compassion triumph over everything else. Because “together” is always better. Whether on the mountain, in our families, in our work...

Maybe we should take a leaf out of the book of the “soul” of the forests: solidarity, standing up for each another, growing together.

Wir finden, dass das Thema „Miteinander“ aktueller denn je ist. Und sich die Botschaft der Bäume auf beinahe jeden Lebensbereich übertragen lässt. Der Wald zeigt uns eindrucksvoll auf, wie wunderbar das Leben sein kann, wenn Brüderlichkeit, Zusammenhalt, Vielfalt und Mitgefühl über allem stehen. Denn „miteinander“ geht es immer besser, egal ob am Berg, in der Familie, im Berufsleben …

Vielleicht sollten wir uns am „Soul“ der Wälder ein Beispiel nehmen: zusammenhalten, füreinander einstehen, miteinander wachsen.

DE | Neues Jahr – neues Thema. So halten wir es seit dem ersten Tag von Maloja. Seit 2004 sind auf diese Weise 16 komplett unterschiedliche Kollektionen aus verschiedensten Themenwelten entstanden. Im Sommerkatalog haben wir Einblicke in den kreativen Entwicklungsprozess der aktuellen, 17. Kollektion „Soul in the Woods“ gewährt. Auf den nächsten Seiten zeigen wir, wie wir innovative Technologien mit dem typischen Maloja Design verbinden, Naturfasern auch in Funktionsmaterialien einsetzen – und wie wichtig uns der Produktionsstandort Europa ist.

EN | New year, new theme. That’s how we’ve done it at Maloja since the very first day. It’s also why, since 2004, we’ve managed to create 16 completely new collections with such a wide range of motifs. In the summer catalogue we gave you a brief glimpse into the creative development processes for the current 17th collection “Soul in the Woods”. On the following pages, we will show you how we combine innovative technologies with the typical Maloja design, how we also use natural fibres in functional materials – and how important Europe is to us as a production location.

EN | The development of functional jackets is a complex matter: they need to be breathable, but also waterproof and abrasion-resistant. At the same time, we are not only concerned about their function but also about their link to the typical Maloja design. Then we also have the body mapping concept, which allows us to view the upper body like a map and raises the question: In which areas do we need breathability?

Where do we need abrasion resistance?

With Warp Knit, we have discovered a method of processing that opens up completely new paths for us: this special knitting technology allows us to adapt the functionality to the corresponding areas of the body – without using different materials for this. Thanks to Warp Knit, we can work with unlimited structures and yarns: the outer material is knitted more thickly at the shoulders and with a more open-pored structure under the arms and on the back. With our 3-layer jackets, we have succeeded in creating these structures using extensive motifs: a leaf design was developed for the women’s jacket BirkeM., a mountain forest for the men’s jacket LärcheM.

DE | Die Entwicklung von Funktionsjacken ist eine komplexe Geschichte: atmungsaktiv sollen sie sein, aber auch wasserdicht und abriebbeständig.

Gleichzeitig geht es uns nicht nur um die Funktion, sondern um die Verbindung mit dem typischen Maloja Design. Und dann ist da noch das Body Mapping Konzept, das uns den Oberkörper wie eine Landkarte betrachten lässt und vor die Fragen stellt: An welchen Stellen brauchen wir Atmungsaktivität? Wo Abriebfestigkeit?

Mit Warp Knit haben wir eine Verarbeitungsform gefunden, die uns völlig neue Wege eröffnet: Diese spezielle Wirk-Technologie ermöglicht uns, die Funktionalität an die entsprechenden Körperbereiche anzupassen – und dies, ohne dafür verschiedene Materialien einsetzen zu müssen.

Denn dank Warp Knit können wir über Strukturen und Garnstärken arbeiten: An den Schultern wird das Obermaterial dichter gewirkt, unter den Achseln und am Rücken offenporiger. Bei unseren 3-Lagen-Jacken ist es uns gelungen, diese Strukturen anhand von großflächigen Motiven zu erzeugen: Für die Frauen-Jacke BirkeM. wurde ein Blätter-Design entwickelt, für die Männer-Jacke LärcheM. ein Bergwald-Design.

Funktion aus der Natur EN | When something really fascinates us, we keep at it.

Hemp is such a topic: since using the natural fibre for the first time in our climbing and bouldering range in 2019, we have been constantly searching for new opportunities to use it in even more products within the Maloja collection. Together with a long-standing partner from Italy, we have now managed to develop a fleece material that, unusually, does not primarily consist of polyester. In our “Hemp Fleece�, we have been able to replace over half of the material with the natural fibres hemp (31%) and cotton (26%) – without reducing the functionality. The hemp fibres naturally inhibiting sweat and odour, regulate moisture well and dry quickly. They have a cooling effect in heat, are abrasion-resistant and naturally antibacterial.

DE | Wenn uns etwas richtig fasziniert, bleiben wir dran. Hanf ist so ein Thema: Seit wir die Naturfaser 2019 zum ersten Mal in unserer Kletter- und Boulder-Linie verwendet haben, sind wir ständig auf der Suche nach neuen Möglichkeiten, um sie in noch mehr Produkten in der Maloja Kollektion einzusetzen.

Gemeinsam mit einem langjährigen Partner aus Italien ist es uns nun gelungen, ein Fleece-Material zu entwickeln, das nicht wie üblich zum Großteil aus Polyester besteht. In unserem „Hemp Fleece“ konnten wir über die Hälfte des Materials durch die natürlichen Fasern Hanf (31 %) und Baumwolle (26 %) ersetzen – und das ohne Einbußen bei der Funktionalität. Denn Hanf-Fasern sind von Natur aus schweiß- und geruchshemmend, regulieren sehr gut die Feuchtigkeit, trocknen schnell, wirken bei Hitze kühlend, sind abriebfest und natürlich antibakteriell.

EN | When Maloja was founded in 2004, one thing was certain for us: we wanted long-term partnerships with our manufacturers – and delivery routes that are as short as possible. We still stand for this and therefore we manufacture 70% of our products in Europe.

In 2014, we began setting up our own production facility in Bulgaria: VioModa specialises in processing high-quality functional materials and is equipped with state-of-the-art machines. This led to the creation of functional clothing for cycling, cross-country skiing, ski touring, and other outdoor sports at three sites in Plovdiv, Kritschim and Tschirpan with a total of 270 employees.

The close coordination between our development and production team at the company headquarters in Rimsting and the development department at VioModa is particularly valuable to us: within our collaboration regarding new technologies and processing options, we constantly come up with ideas and solutions that help us to once again take our functional products to the next level.

DE | Als Maloja 2004 gegründet wurde, stand für uns fest: Wir wollen langfristige Partnerschaften mit unseren Produzenten – und möglichst kurze Lieferwege. Das halten wir bis heute so und produzieren deshalb 70 % unserer Produkte in Europa. 2014 begannen wir dann mit dem Aufbau einer eigenen Produktionsstätte in Bulgarien: VioModa ist auf die Verarbeitung hochwertiger Funktionsstoffe spezialisiert und mit modernsten Maschinen ausgestattet. So entsteht an drei Standorten in Plovdiv, Kritschim und Tschirpan mit insgesamt 270 Mitarbeitern Funktionsbekleidung für den Radsport, Langlauf, Skitourengehen, aber auch für andere Outdoor-Sportarten.

Besonders wertvoll für uns ist die enge Abstimmung zwischen unserem Design- und Produktions-Team in der Firmenzentrale in Rimsting und der Entwicklungsabteilung bei VioModa: Im Austausch über neue Technologien und Verarbeitungsmöglichkeiten kommen wir immer wieder auf Ideen und Lösungen, die uns helfen, unsere Funktionsprodukte erneut auf ein höheres Level zu bringen.

Unterwegs im „Heimr e v ier“

EN | Every sporty person has a “home spot”. It’s the paths and trails directly outside their front door that they walk, run or cycle over and over again. And they never grow tired of them because they always offer something different, depending on the weather, the time of year and even the time of day. Our “home spot” is the area surrounding our company headquarters in Rimsting that stretches around 12 kilometres. It covers everything, from the Seenplatte lakes to Lake Chiemsee right up to the moors, hills and alpine pastures. And although we know a lot of the routes like the back of our hand, we rediscovered them entirely in the “Corona autumn” 2020. Instead of walking or taking our mountain bikes, we travelled by gravel bike. It made us even more aware of just how beautiful the area is that we’ve been able to call our home, just how great the people around us are, and just how little is needed to have a good time together.

DE | Jeder halbwegs sportliche Mensch hat so etwas wie ein „Heimrevier“. Das sind die Wege und Trails direkt vor der Haustür, die man immer und immer wieder geht, läuft oder fährt – und die trotzdem nicht langweilig werden, weil sie bei jedem Wetter, zu jeder Jahreszeit, ja zu jeder Tageszeit anders auf einen wirken. Unser „Heimrevier“ ist die Gegend im Umkreis von rund 20 Kilometern um unsere Firmenzentrale in Rimsting: Von der Seenplatte über den Chiemsee bis hin zu Mooren, Hügeln und Almen ist alles dabei. Und obwohl wir viele der Strecken wie unsere Westentasche kennen, haben wir sie im „Corona-Herbst“ 2020 noch einmal ganz neu entdeckt. Statt zu Fuß oder mit dem Mountainbike waren wir mit den Gravel-Bikes unterwegs. Und dabei wurde uns einmal mehr bewusst, in welcher schönen Gegend wir leben dürfen, welch feine Menschen wir um uns haben – und wie wenig es braucht, um eine gute Zeit miteinander zu verbringen.

Z u Besuch im „Ir r enhaus“

EN | We’ve been friends with Markus Bendler for a number of years. After coming to us as an athlete originally, he became a valuable expert for all alpine sports clothing. And when he wanted to open a premium alpine sports shop after an active career as an ice climber, obviously we’d be there for whatever he needed. When Markus isn’t helping customers in the “Rock‘n’Roll Mountain Store” in Kirchdorf, Tirol, you can often find him in the mountains. And when he told us in 2015 that he’d just found a place where you have to cross “forests” of two-meter-tall ferns on the approach, one thing was certain: we needed to go there. A few years passed before we finally visited the “madhouse”. But the wait was definitely worth it, and we were rewarded with an amazing day of climbing in autumn.

DE | Mit Markus Bendler verbindet uns eine langjährige Freundschaft: Ursprünglich als Athlet zu uns gekommen, wurde er ein wertvoller Berater in Sachen Bergsportbekleidung, und als er nach seiner aktiven Karriere als Eiskletterer einen hochwertigen Bergsportladen eröffnen wollte, war klar, dass wir ihm mit Rat und Tag zur Seite stehen. Wenn Markus nicht im „Rock ’n’ Roll Mountain Store“ in Kirchdorf in Tirol seine Kunden berät, trifft man ihn meistens am Fels. Und als er uns 2015 erzählt hat, dass er gerade ein Gebiet erschließt, auf dessen Zustieg „Wälder“ aus zwei Meter hohen Farnen zu durchqueren sind, war klar: Da müssen wir hin. Es hat einige Jahre gedauert, bis es endlich gepasst hat mit unserem Besuch im „Irrenhaus“. Aber das Warten hat sich eindeutig gelohnt und wurde mit einem wunderbaren herbstlichen Klettertag belohnt.

EN | Who hasn’t been tempted to head back inside and simply stay in bed or on the sofa on a boring Sunday in autumn, when the clouds hang over the sky like a lead blanket? Still, we pulled ourselves together and once again discovered that going outside simply does us a world of good – even if the sun isn’t shining and the sky isn’t clear. The “mountain experience” doesn’t have to be joyless. Quite the opposite. With reduced visibility, we pay more attention to the things directly around us: The knotted tree by the wayside. The smell of the forest.

When we arrived at the Waidringer Steinplatte, we were just happy that we’d overcome our laziness. And there was still plenty of time in the afternoon for coffee and cake and lounging around on the sofa.

DE | Wer kennt sie nicht, diese trüben Herbst-Sonntage, an denen die Wolken wie eine bleierne Decke über der Landschaft liegen und man dazu geneigt ist, sich nochmal umzudrehen und einfach im Bett oder auf der Couch zu bleiben. Wir haben uns trotzdem aufgerafft und einmal mehr erfahren, dass es einfach gut tut, rauszugehen – auch wenn die Sonne nicht vom blitzblauen Himmel strahlt. Das „Erlebnis Berg“ muss deshalb nicht getrübt sein. Im Gegenteil: Ohne große Fernsicht bekommen die Dinge in der näheren Umgebung mehr Aufmerksamkeit: der knorrige Baum am Wegesrand. Der Geruch des Waldes.

Auf der Waidringer Steinplatte angekommen, waren wir einfach nur froh, unseren inneren Schweinehund überwunden zu haben. Und der Nachmittag bot immer noch genug Zeit für Kaffee und Kuchen und gemütliches „Rumlungern“ auf der Couch.

EN | Speaking of “home spot”. Even though we greatly appreciate the area around our company headquarters in Chiemgau, we always prick up our ears when friends of Maloja are enthuse about their “home spot”. This time, it was Armin Auchentaller who put the idea of Antholz in our heads. Armin is at home in the world’s biathlon arenas and cross-country skiing trails as a trainer for the US biathlon ladies. However, “dahoam”, or home, for him is in the South Tyrolean Pustertal, more specifically in Antholz. The name of this small place with just over 1200 inhabitants is known as a venue for biathlon competitions: Antholz is on red alert during world cups and world championships. Yet, once the biathlon fans have left, calm returns at the foot of the Rieserferner Group. People have the cross-country skiing trails all to themselves, especially at the start of the season.

As Armin travels from venue to venue with the world cup circus during the winter, he was unfortunately unable to show us his “home spot” himself. But true to the phrase “my friends are also your friends”, he put us in contact with some very lovely people from his home, who showed us around his favourite spots. Thank you, Armin!

DE | Apropos „Heimrevier“. Auch wenn wir die Gegend rund um unseren Firmensitz im Chiemgau sehr schätzen, hören wir immer sehr genau hin, wenn uns jemand aus dem Maloja Freundeskreis von seinem „Heimrevier“ vorschwärmt. Diesmal war es Armin Auchentaller, der uns einen Floh namens „Antholz“ ins Ohr gesetzt hat. Armin ist als Trainer der U.S. Biathlon Damen in den Biathlon-Arenen und auf den Loipen der Welt zuhause. „Dahoam“ aber ist er im Südtiroler Pustertal, genauer gesagt in Antholz. Den Namen dieses kleinen Ortes mit gerade mal etwas über 1200 Einwohnern kennt man als Austragungsort von Biathlon-Wettkämpfen: Während der Weltcups und Weltmeisterschaften ist Antholz im Ausnahmezustand. Doch wenn die Biathlon-Fans abgereist sind, kehrt zu Füßen der Rieserfernergruppe wieder Ruhe ein. Und gerade zu Saisonbeginn hat man die Loipen noch für sich.

Da Armin den Winter über mit dem Weltcup-Zirkus von Austragungsort zu Austragungsort reist, konnte er uns sein „Heimrevier“ leider nicht selbst zeigen. Aber nach dem schönen Motto „Meine Freunde sind auch Eure Freunde“ hat er uns den Kontakt zu sehr netten Menschen aus seiner Heimat hergestellt, die uns wiederum an ihre Lieblingsplätze geführt haben. Danke, Armin!

Geschenk t e Tage EN | It’s the same game practically every winter: we wait excitedly for the first snow. Then, when it finally comes, it’s either so little that we have to continue exercising patience. Or it snows so much that we still need to be patient: after heavy snowfall, we first have to wait until the avalanche situation has calmed down enough for the first trips into the mountains to be made.

What helps in times like these besides patience? Humility. It doesn’t always have to be big tours. You don’t need a summit for a wonderful moment or even steep slopes for a descent that brings up a smile on your face and where you can let out a “yeah!” as you make downhill turns. What’s important is to have a good time in the mountains with friends and being able to enjoy the little moments: the sparkling of the snow crystals, the blue sky, the snowy winter landscape, the “natural kickers” in the forest...

DE | Eigentlich ist es fast jeden Winter das gleiche Spiel: Wir warten gespannt auf den ersten Schnee. Und wenn er schließlich kommt, dann entweder so mäßig, dass wir uns weiter in Geduld üben müssen. Oder es schneit so viel, dass auch wieder Geduld gefragt ist: Denn nach ausgiebigen Schneefällen gilt es erstmal abzuwarten, bis die Lawinensituation sich soweit entspannt hat, dass erste Ausflüge ins Gelände möglich sind.

Was in solchen Zeiten außer Geduld noch hilft? Demut. Es müssen nicht immer die großen Touren sein. Es braucht keinen Gipfel für den schönen Moment und auch keinen steilen Hang für eine Abfahrt, die einem ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubert und bei der man mit einem „Juchitzer“ abschwingt.

Wichtig ist, gemeinsam mit Freunden eine gute Zeit am Berg zu erleben und sich auch an den kleinen Momenten erfreuen zu können: dem Glitzern der Schneekristalle, dem blauen Himmel, der verschneiten Winterlandschaft, den „Naturkickern“ im Wald …
