LAURIE MARSHALL’S LOVE FOR THE MCG The year is 1977. Laurie Marshall has been opening the batting for the Kyneton Cricket Club for over 20 years. During that off season, the Malmsbury Cricket Club (MCC) made the approach to recruit Laurie. It turned out to be the greatest decision the club ever made in its near 170-year history.

Yes, they wanted Laurie for his rock solid batting, but the MCC had a clever ulterior motive. In earlier years, Laurie had installed turf pitches at Kyneton’s Barkly Square and the MCC wanted to do the same at their own picturesque cricket ground, affectionately known as the MCG. Thus the seed was planted and Laurie agreed – he made the move and joined the MCC. Soon after, Laurie trucked in a load of the famed Merri Creek soil and laid 2 turf pitches. He did an incredible job and the pitches have indeed stood the test of time.

In the 46 seasons since, Laurie has prepared every single pitch ever used. It’s his passion to spend time out in the middle watering, mowing and rolling his beloved turf. It’s been the cornerstone of all the club’s success since, including recent back to back Division 1 GDCA premierships in 2019/20 & 2020/21.

Ballarat’s roller manufacturer Mentay were so moved, they generously donated a $20K ride on roller. It’s now Laurie’s pride and joy and the centre wickets have never looked better. Laurie’s ancient rollers now reside at the western end of the MCG. Malmsbury had been so fortunate and privileged that Laurie chose to join the MCC. He continued his playing career for 30 years and was also President for a decade. We were moved in recent years to name the ground in his honour. It was a small gesture to show our appreciation for all his amazing efforts. Visitors to the pitch will pass his timber crafted sign entering through the gates.

The MCG will proudly and forever be known as the Laurie Marshall Cricket Ground.

Now 88 and after some recent health battles, Laurie is again out there doing what he loves most. MEET A LOCAL PAUL MEGNA ANSWERS THE QUESTION, WHY MALMSBURY?

You might have seen Paul Megna while out walking his dogs Mister and Zari on a 10kilometre daily ritual, wearing his distinctive Fitzroy football cap. A third-generation butcher from Melbourne, Paul and his partner Jenny moved to Malmsbury 14 years ago.

“Malmsbury’s big appeal was the train, making it easy to commute into Kyneton or Melbourne to watch my favourite R&B bands – wherever I can find them.” When Paul isn’t out beating a track around town or seeing live music, he volunteers at Kyneton Caring Community.

WHAT IS THIS, A LOAD OF RUBBISH? If keeping an eye out for snakes wasn’t enough, now residents have to watch out for the Macedon Ranges’ new mascot Kerby.

According to the photos, Kerby can pop up at any moment, lurking around bins and worse still, hiding in kitchens waiting for the moment you, heaven forbid, place a glass jar in the wrong tub.

This new face of the council’s Let’s Get Sorted Waste and Recycling Campaign tells us the 4-bin system is now so convoluted, it must be explained as if we were small children.

Meanwhile, those high IQ residents that successfully manage to sort their rubbish will receive a Kerby sticker on their bin... so there’s that to look forward to.

No doubt taking its inspiration from Six Thinking Hats (an approach to problem solving and decision making by the philosopher Edward De Bono), Kerby’s lid changes colour depending on what the situation calls for. Kerby wears the lime green lid to collect food and garden waste, a yellow lid to recycle, purple when collecting glass and again, according to the photos, red when breaking and entering.

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAYRE IN APRIL 2025 The Malmsbury Village Fayre Committee is looking forward to delivering a fantastic Fayre again in 2025. Taking place on Sunday 27th April, there will be over 80 stallholders, even more food vendors and plenty of fun entertainment lined up for the day.

Call for volunteers If you love the Fayre, the committee is currently seeking volunteers to help with organising this wonderful community day. You can put your hand up to help on the day or offer to assist the committee in one of the following roles: • Volunteer coordinator – recruiting and keeping in touch with our amazing volunteers.

• Creative team – you have creative ideas and energy to bring the Fayre theme to life, with decorations, art installations, treasure hunts, whatever you can imagine!

• Logistics support – you have some availability to support the logistics team, particularly in the month before the Fayre, collecting equipment, putting up signs, etc.

The friendly Fayre bunch meet fortnightly February to March and weekly in April. You don't need to attend all meetings, but our meetings are productive and efficient and have been known to include wine.

BREATHE YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH Breath awareness and focused breathing is essential not only for physical well-being but also for mental clarity and emotional stability.

Engaging in mindful breathing helps clear the mind of distracting and negative thoughts, promotes a sense of calm and improves overall mental health. It’s also particularly beneficial in reducing the physical effects of stress and anxiety such as muscle tension, fatigue and disrupted sleep patterns.

In the realm of Yoga, the breathing exercises are referred to as Pranayama. This term is derived from two Sanskrit words – ‘Prana’, which means life force or energy, and ‘Yama’, which signifies control or regulation. Pranayama can be understood as the practice of controlling your energy through the regulation of breath. A long, slow inhalation allows the lungs to maximise oxygen intake, which serves as one of the body’s primary energy supplies. A prolonged, deliberate exhalation facilitates the expulsion of carbon dioxide and other waste products from the body.

One of the first steps in mastering Pranayama is to cultivate mindfulness around your breath, becoming aware of the movement of the breath within your body. Start by noticing the subtle lift of your abdomen and the expansion of your chest with each inhalation, and the gentle softening and release of tension during exhalation. Greetings from your newly elected West Ward Councillors – Kate, Jennifer and Janet. Thank you for your support and we are thrilled and honoured to be representing you. We acknowledge the other candidates who nominated and thank them for their active work in the community.

Congratulations to Cr Domonic Bonanno elected as Mayor and Cr Kate Kendall elected as Deputy Mayor. These first weeks of our four-year term together have concentrated on getting to know each other as a team of nine Councillors and Council Officers, and also introductions to the different directorates in Council. As you know, it’s a large organisation and we provide many services.

One thing we know as ward representatives is that organising regular meet and greet sessions with our community at various times and places is important, so we will be advertising these. We welcome your feedback and please get in touch any time.

SHORT STORY COMP OPEN FOR ENTRIES

Malmsbury gardens, lake and the environs could be just the spaces you’re seeking for a Christmas picnic with family and friends. There is plenty of room for children to run and play a game of hide and seek, tag or lawn cricket. Worth noting, there is a well fitted out picnic shelter with cover, over near the viewing spot of the wonderful Malmsbury Viaduct bluestone bridge.

The Malmsbury Mail is excited to invite budding writers of all ages to submit all manner of written short stories, memoirs, poetry and prose for The Davy Prize 2024.

If you pick the right day, the reflections and patterns from the sun through the leaves are mesmerising at this relaxed nature venue. Please remember if you do visit, bring the picnic rug for the ground and also a container to place any rubbish in to take away.

If you are thinking of last minute Christmas gifts, then why not a pot plant from a local nursery? Or perhaps a propagating kit, and an indoor plant, a seed raising kit or make something creative from flowers or plants in your garden?

Looking ahead to 2025, the Friends of Malmsbury Gardens will be at the Malmsbury Village Fayre in autumn with some exciting plants and information on gardens in our region.

There are three categories with $200/$100 for the first/second prize of the adults category, $150 for the teen category and $50 for the winner of the children’s category. HELLO FELLOW GARDEN LOVERS

BY ROSEMARY DAVIES Hot, cold, steamy, windy and definitely very dry weather has been on the cards lately and even as I write today, it’s very dry, Yes, for those who read my winter column, those broad beans I planted in autumn and coveted all through winter with frost cloth are still producing, but slowing down now.

The trick with the veggie garden has been to keep the water up to the plants, so soft ones such as lettuce and celery which need plenty of water to stay juicy, are regularly watered. I’ve recycled some upturned plastic lemonade and milk bottles to give a slow release watering into the beds.

Wahoo! The strawberries are producing, not kilos a day as my sister in NSW boasts from her patch, but a few (hopefully more soon) so that I treasure each juicy one.

The secret at the moment and for the next few months it to get all your garden beds mulched.

Particularly after we get a good downpour of rain as it is far more effective to mulch when the soil is already moist. If you can water, be sure to water over the top as soon as you get the mulch down.

We use soaked old cardboard boxes or ‘wads’ of soggy newspaper under our mulches, to stop the weeds coming through. Pale coloured mulch like sugar cane or straw keeps the roots cool while bark and darker coloured mulches keep the warmth in the soil and around plants.

Roses and Callistemons are looking particularly lovely at the moment, just ask honeyeaters and rosellas!

MAA TOWN HALL MEETING UPDATE

AWARD-WINNING LOCAL PRODUCE

The Special General Meeting for the Malmsbury Advance Association (MAA) was held at the Malmsbury Town Hall on 17 November.

Approximately 40 people were in attendance.

Malmsbury’s own Grant Taylor claimed first prize in the Royal Melbourne Show’s ‘open cakes’ category for his Nut and Fruit Loaf. He also took out third place in the ‘biscuits, pastries and slice’ category for his brownie – an incredible achievement for a debut entrant.

Jeff Katz, an independent third party, acted as mediator and chair of the meeting, supported by Sue Love and presenter Lee Ferguson.

The focus was on clarifying the current status of the now disbanded MAA, with the forum providing an opportunity for the local community to ask questions and exchange information.

No stranger to accolades, Grant has also won the title of ‘Most successful exhibitor for preserves’ awarded by the Castlemaine show, winning six first prizes for his jams and chutneys.

In exchange for ingredients, Grant creates produce for Malmsbury Primary School which you can purchase at their Farmer’s Market stall.

With no financial statements provided by past committee members in spite of several requests, the exact state of the former association remains unclear.

Attendees were quick to respond to the situation, with all in agreement that a new committee is needed to establish financial clarity and order as swiftly as possible.

A motion to reconstitute the MAA took place, followed by the formation of a working committee.

MALMSBURY PRIMARY SCHOOL UPDATE

BY TRAVIS POOL, PRINCIPAL. There have been so many fantastic things happening for the students of Malmsbury Primary School this term.

Our Junior School Council (JSC) has been busy running a number of activities for students. This has included the return of Malmsbury Munchies, where students prepare lunch orders for other students.

The JSC has also organised our Colour Fun Run which was such a fun-filled event, with students, families and staff joining in the obstacle course and being doused with water and brightly coloured powders.

We have also had a number of grounds works over the term. The old silver shed has been removed, and new concrete areas developed.

Some great work from our After School Carers have enabled our veggie gardens to get back up and running after the winter break. We also now have an Indigenous Bush Tucker Garden installed, which will add to the produce that will be used in cooking sessions with students.

On the second day, they ventured to the Werribee Open Plains Zoo. Here they had a wonderful time seeing all the animals and were even able to get up close and personal with a mother Rhino and her 9 week old baby when on the bus tour.

We have also enjoyed having our first After School Auskick program running courtesy of AFL Victoria, and we are even more excited about having some of the Essendon Football Club players join us for a kick-to-kick in the first week of December.

TINY TOWN FUNDING

Business Kyneton and Tourism Macedon Ranges secured funding for Malmsbury through the Tiny Towns Fund. Village Well (www.villagewell.org) has been engaged to deliver this project through a workshop in Malmsbury in early 2025.

In 2023, Tourism Macedon Ranges (TMR) announced the launch of the Macedon Ranges Thriving Villages Project to help local villages create meaningful change and thrive.

The first phase of the project involves village representatives from across the Macedon Ranges meeting to explore opportunities and issues impacting their town centres. This information will be used to inform the Macedon Ranges Regional Vision and Roadmap, an inspirational future direction for the region’s villages.

Romsey and Lancefield will be delivering their projects in 2024. Other villages will need to express interest and source funding for their own Town Centre Activation Plans.

Further funding will be needed to roll out the results from the Village Well workshop in 2025.

We’ll keep you updated with the impact of the project as it progresses in 2025.

BOOK REVIEW

I have left it until the last moment to write this book review as I wasted a lot of time on a real crock called Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner, which split top American critics down the middle with one side espousing it as ‘creative, magical’ etc, and the other faction describing it as ‘entirely put down-able’. Needless to say, I subscribe to the latter.

So what was I to do? I try to suggest novels that will have lots of appeal but the pickings lately, with some exceptions, have been meagre.

Accordingly, I have taken a wistful stroll down memory lane this time with some novels that still bring a smile to my face.

Several novels written by John Barth that I read forty years ago, still astonish me, pre-eminent of which is The Sot-Weed Factor, published in 1960. It follows the adventures of Ebenezer Cooke, self-appointed Poet Laureate of the state of Maryland USA and set in the eighteenth century.

Enthused already, huh? Well Barth will help you out with this opening sentence which leaves Du Maurier and Hartley IMO in his hilarious dust.

‘In the last years of the Seventeenth Century, there was to be found among the fops and fools of the London coffee-houses one rangy gangling flitch called Ebenezer Cooke, more ambitious than talented, and yet more talented than prudent, who, like his friends-in-folly, all of whom were supposed to be educating at Oxford or Cambridge, had found the sound of Mother English more fun to game with than her sense to labor over, and so rather than applying himself to the pains of scholarship, had learned the knack of versifying, and ground out quires of couplets after the fashion of the day, afroth with Joves and Jupiter, aclang with jarring rhymes, and stringtaut with similes stretched to the snappingpoint.’

Now if you appreciated that, you’re in for a real treat – only 800 pages to complete. Sorry about that, as Maxwell Smart would say. One thing more, Barth was keenly influenced by Henry Fielding who penned the picaresque Tom Jones - possibly the funniest novel of the eighteenth century, and one which demands reading as well.

One recent novel which did impress me greatly is Gabriel’s Moon by the ever-reliable William Boyd.

He’s in spy book territory alongside the superb Mick Herron and acquits himself well. It’s about a naïve, eponymous Gabriel, orphaned when young, who is suborned into delivering strange packages around Europe. Very entertaining indeed.

Once again, Police have been quite busy since October with numerous incidents involving non-locals taking an interest around the railway station. Please remember to lock you car when not using it and have yours keys inside out of sight.

There were 2 family violence incidents reported, with 3 Intervention Orders issued and 2 offenders charged with assault and breach offences.

In October, the railway station was targeted with 6 cars broken into. 2 suspects from Sunbury are being sought for interview.

Also 2 Sunbury people were charged with trespassing at the railway station, along with another 2 Sunbury males charged with possessing weapons.

A ute was stolen from a farm and recovered a short distance down the road on Malmsbury-Metcalfe Rd. For those wishing for more information about what the Police are doing in your area, you can go to our Facebook page – Eyewatch Macedon Ranges Police Service Area.

If you see a person or car that doesn’t quite fit, please take the details down, either description or registration number, and ring 000 for Police to attend. What you see may be the piece of the

With summer just around the corner, remember to allow for the increase of vehicle, pedestrian and cycle traffic around our area as we all enjoy the sunshine. A Kyneton male was charged with making a false report to police and numerous serious traffic offences after driving off from police in Mollison St. Please drive to the conditions and stay safe out there.

Finally, don’t forget to check when Fire Restrictions start (Mt. Alexander has already) and then what you do and when regarding fires – there will be zero-tolerance policy in Macedon Ranges. Also, have your fire plan ready to go.

GETTING SET FOR THE FIRE SEASON Malmsbury Fire Brigade has begun preparing its members and equipment for the coming fire season. “We are now focussing our training and preparations for the fire season,” said Malmsbury Captain Linda Krive.

“In recent years, we have seen the fire danger increase quite early, so it’s really important to ensure we are prepared for increased temperatures and dried out grass and scrub.

Driving around the area, I’m really pleased to see many people also getting their properties ready for the season.”

“Every effort people make to prepare themselves and their properties helps reduce the chance of property loss during a fire; even if they plan to leave early.”

Captain Krive urged people to consider family members, friends, or neighbours who may need help preparing for fires.
