MEET A LOCAL

BELINDA SALTMARSH-KRAM ANSWERS THE QUESTION, WHY MALMSBURY?

“We moved to Malmsbury 25 years ago as we loved the village vibe, divine Botanic gardens, the quirkiness of the geese and the many wonderful people making Malmsbury their home Nature, community, great places to eat, walk and breathe fresh air – who wouldn’t live here!”

Pictured with Belinda are Siglinde (Sigi) and Brunnhilde (Brunni), Miniature German Schnauzers, named after Wagner’s female leads in the Ring cycle

READING RECONCILIATION

The Macedon Ranges Reconciliation Reading Group, an initiative between the Macedon Ranges Truth & Reconciliation Group (MRT&RG) and Kyneton Library, is a pro-active community group that meets at Kyneton Library where local people have a chance to widen their knowledge and share ideas about Truth and Reconciliation

Ally-ship has become a bit of a buzzword among Reconciliation Activist circles But what do we mean when we talk about being ‘good allies’? Our hearts are in the right place, but do we bring our ears and minds to the conversation?

Ever since I joined the Friends of Nalderan for Reflection Conversations in Castlemaine, the thought has been fermenting: how do I practice good ally-ship? We explored these questions through Trace Balla’s wonderful graphic stories for kids: Rivertime, Rockhopping, Landing With Wings and Leaf-Light When I read these books, I thought I saw a map of the writer’s journey from a well-intentioned observer, who had her own deep connection to the natural world, to a writer working with Djaara Mob to write deeply inclusive stories of belonging and connection to Country. I think probably the biggest takeaway was the importance of respectful relationships. We might have all the best of intentions, but it might not be the right time to ask all our

questions It’s more respectful to sit back, wait for things to evolve It’s like the river in Rivertime, and the way it flows, taking its own time and making its own course People didn’t alter its course, they flowed with it.

If you ’ re interested in getting involved, dates and themes for future meetups will be finalised soon. Look for our updates on the library and on the MRT&RG Social Media.

SUSTAINABLE MALMSBURY

Sustainable Malmsbury hosts three winter Crafternoons at the Malmsbury Town Hall – one in June, July and August (for 2024, the last session crept over to the 1st of Sept). It’s a chance for local makers and menders to gather, connect and share skills together. Each year the attendance of these sessions has been building This year, we hosted a weaving circle with local teachers Deita and Sybil teaching us the art of coil basketry 2024 was our fourth year of running these sessions – keep an eye out on our Facebook page, or watch the window of the Malmsbury Bakery for our flyer for next year ’ s Crafternoons

Do you want lower energy bills? We have some factsheets at mrsg.org.au/sustainablemalmsbury and we love to talk energy efficiency at our stall at the Malmsbury Farmers’ Market There are also upcoming local workshops covering energy efficiency, rooftop solar and home batteries Details at mrsg.org.au/events If you are interested in exploring options for a community battery in Malmsbury, we are keen to get a working group together Please email us at sustainable-malmsbury@mrsg.org.au

BILL BATES WINS CFA COMMUNITY AWARD

Congratulations to Bill ‘Billy’ Bates, the deserving recipient of the 2024 Malmsbury CFA Community Service Award, awarded in recognition of his 43 year volunteering in the community.

Back in 1981, Billy joined the Malmsbury CFA, serving for 11 years. During this time, he also volunteered for numerous other community groups, such as the Malmsbury Advance Association, Malmsbury Historical Society, Malmsbury Anglican Club, Freemasons, R S L, National Services Association, Vietnam Veterans Association, Light Horse Monument Committee and Vic Roads Bypass consultation committee

In more recent times, Billy’s volunteering is mostly associated with his dedication to organising, contributing and participating at the Malmsbury Anzac Day Service, which 21 years ago, had become a non event With the support of a few locals and one enterprising cat, Billy passionately reinstated the Malmsbury Anzac Day Service at the Malmsbury Town Hall Today, this annual event maintains a strong, engaging and supportive presence within the local community

Billy has recently decided to step back from a lot of his volunteer groups for personal reasons and to spend more time with family However, in saying that, it’s worth noting that his legacy will be carried on by his daughter Isabella, who has already in the last couple of years demonstrated great aspirations to follow in her father’s footsteps as a selfless community volunteer As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

The Malmsbury CFA Community Service Award night was held on Saturday 17th August at the Malmsbury Pub

REPRESENTING MALMSBURY AT THE PARIS OLYMPICS

MALMSBURY’S RESIDENT CHIROPRACTOR, DR LISA DON WAS AT THE PARIS OLYMPICS TO SUPPORT BALLARAT HIGH JUMPER, YUAL REATH

Monday 5 August

Arrived in Paris to a message from the coach worried about Yual’s state of mind – a mental block was stopping him from jumping

My accommodation, which was a private apartment, had no reception and nowhere to leave my bag I must have looked completely lost as the French woman, who owned the downstairs restaurant, offered to help She agreed to look after my bag so I could find a place to treat Yual I sat on the corner listening to the stadium crowd, people watching and enjoying the magnificent weather It felt like I was part of a movie – it felt so right being there.

Tuesday 6 August

Back at the apartment, I tried watching the Olympics on TV while listening to the crowd from the stadium but alas, it was all in French I treated Yual by the river again, we concentrated on getting him used to the noise of the crowd Feels like he is ready – tomorrow is the big day

Wednesday 7 August – Competition Day

I met Yual and we found a park bench to do a treatment as an intrigued policeman looked on. Yual was in total fear mode and thought he couldn’t jump. We calmed that down with lots of Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) and cleaned up dysafferentation (joint disfunction) in his body.

An Uber took us to the track the athletes use in preparation for their event. Yual jumped 2.15m and was thrilled At lunch, we met two English ladies, one a gold medallist from 1972

Up at 5am couldn’t sleep. Gates opened at 8.30. I had an amazing seat on the rail, one level up next to Brandon Starc’s wife (high jump) and Matt Denny’s wife (discus throw) Great to be with Aussies again

The competition was the most nerve-racking thing I have ever lived through – being so close and not being able to help with anything Although Yual didn’t qualify for the final, I was just so proud of the way he conducted himself on the field He did everything we talked about; didn’t let the other competitors get to him and did it his way He was very disappointed and all the emotions of the last three weeks hit him at the same time We had a chat about how this is step one in his career and there is so much more to look forward to After the competition, I went home and rested Post long haul flight cold, I needed time out

Thursday 8 August

I took Yual into central Paris for a sight seeing day post comp Went up the Eiffel tower, walked along the river to the Louvre and stopped on the way to see the Olympic cauldron Then, a taxi to the Arc de Triomphe Had lunch at a restaurant

near the Arc Trained it back to St Denis Big bath and bed for that night – actually got some sleep!

Friday 9 August

Took a Paris river cruise and had a good look at Notre-Dame (still getting rebuilt after the fire, very sad) I walked around some of the ‘posh’ areas just taking in the atmosphere A chat with Yual on the phone revealed he is now looking forward to the year ahead; world championships in Japan and aiming to break the Australian high jump record!

Saturday 10 August

Met Yual in the morning and once again, adjusted him by the river Another good treatment He was tired out and went back to the village for a rest Took the train to St Germain and found a beautiful Chalet with gardens built by King Louis X IV, with stunning views of Paris and magnificent gardens to walk around

Sunday 11 August

My last day in Paris, I found a church to visit in St Denis burial place of the kings, so decided to go exploring Came across a beautiful town square and was joined by Yual for lunch We sat under magnificent oak trees and had a big talk about the future and his aims We sat there for about three hours then explored the church He had to head off and get ready for the closing ceremony and I had to head off to get to the airport to catch my flight home

My Paris adventure was just perfect The whole time I was there, I felt like I was in a movie If I was worried something wouldn’t work and sat down and breathed, the universe supplied the right person to help me

Yual is now looking forward to the World Championships, outdoor and indoor and is working at breaking the Australian record There’s the Commonwealth games 2026 and Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 I am looking forward to being a part of that journey and helping him however I can

To experience an Olympic-grade chiropractor, you can find Lisa’s practice at 82 Mollison Street Malmsbury but best to book ahead on 0448 512 593 or via lisa3446@bigpond.com

ON THE GRAPEVINE

HARRIET CHURCHILL, ZIG ZAG RD, FRANCE

Here in Félines Minervois, it is hot and dry and save for a thrilling three-minute storm, has been sweltering for weeks

The vines are stressed but being deep-rooted at around 50-70 years old, they know their business and are holding out for harvest just days away now Somehow the grapes are looking great

In the Macedon Ranges, it was birds that used every trick in the book to try and gobble our grapes just before harvest Here, it is the sangliers, or wild boar

One strategy that seems to be working is the 1990’s ghetto blaster Henry rotates around the vineyards. I suspect one day we will wake to it being nuzzled and smashed by an irate pig not into French radio.

But for now, it seems a happy way to discourage the sangliers from eating the 8 months of blood sweat and tears we ’ ve put into the land (figuratively and literally) Here’s to a fruitful first harvest

MALMSBURY GOLD IS A-BUZZ WITH SPRING

If you ’ re a regular at the Malmsbury Market, you’ll be familiar with local beekeeper Ross Cornell, who has sold honey under his label ‘Malmsbury Gold’ since the first market opened in 2019.

Ross keeps five hives at his home in Malmsbury and about thirty in Taradale, and is always happy to help local aspiring bee keepers. “The trick to keeping bees,” he says, ‘is not to be too greedy Because in the harsh winter they’ve got to have their food And they gorge on honey ”

With the harshest of winter now over, the bees have finished gorging, and their job of clustering round the Queen and her sisters to survive the cold is over Dedicated workers now head out to our parks and gardens, which inevitably brings us to the subject of swarms

“In the warmer weather, the queen is stimulated to lay eggs – the numbers expand so much, the bees can’t smell her pheromones ” Desperate to seek a new monarch, “They focus on a freshly laid egg and feed it royal jelly Then suddenly they realise they have two queens ”

At this point the old queen usually leaves with some of the hive attached, creating a swarm of

devoted subjects trying to find a new home They’ll land on anything a letter box, inside a rubbish bin And they then send out scouts ” Ross also removes unwanted hives as a community service, free of charge, for locals stuck with uninvited swarms

Malmsbury Gold Honeys are as varied as wine, with their own unique tastes and colours These include blackberry, yellowbox and red stringy bark, with colours ranging from soft mustard yellow and golden amber, through to a rich scrumpy orange

Local honeys are also known to be particularly beneficial for those with allergies, which of course are more frequent now that spring is here Next time you ’ re at the markets, say hi to Ross and grab a jar of his famous honey

BOOK REVIEW

I'm currently reading three books, the first two being Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope (who knew the scheming involved in nineteenth century England church politics could be so much fun?) and The Dog of the South by Charles Portis (author of True Grit, later filmed), not really my cup of tea, although I'm in a tiny minority: he is lionised in the USA In short, I'm loving Trollope, he’s a worthy rival to Dickens Portis not so much

The third book is The Men Who Killed the News by Eric Beecher, an expose on the media barons of the United States, London and Australia It focuses in particular on the behaviour and ethics of the Murdoch press It won't surprise that Beecher, a very talented journalist who walked away from the company years ago, finds it severely compromised in both respects Fox News in America is particularly disingenuous when it comes to Donald Trump. When they called the election for Biden on the same day it was held, Trump was furious and had nothing more to do with Fox, which in turn suffered enormously with its popularity plummeting having lost the MAGA followers. Fox promptly stopped ridiculing and furiously began buttering

up to Trump once more, a position they maintain to this day

Finally, I’ve just finished reading Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice – a wonderful rock music memoir by the inestimable Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention, a supremely talented English Folk Rock group in the late 1960s into the 70s, with Thompson commonly rated as among the greatest guitarists in the world, accompanied by the tragic and fragile singer Sandy Denny I rate the triumvirate of the best female popular singers over the past fifty years as Aretha Franklin, Judith Durham and Sandy Denny, with Renée Geyer a close fourth (if anyone is wondering where Kylie Minogue lies, she’s fifteen thousand and fifty-sixth)

Having made some of the greatest albums of all time, Thompson continues his form in the written word He comes across as brilliant, kind and self effacing – but boy can he turn a phrase At the end of the book we find him surveying his life as it were from the viewpoint of an old codger from a park bench. It finishes thus (and I would pay the price of the book just for this): “The attic is empty now, it was time to throw out some old junk, but in doing so it brought up a lot of memories, fond, tragic, regretful, and loving The arrow is arcing back again towards earth now, and catching a glint of gold from the setting sun ”
