Rejection can look like many things, and for the sake of this book, I am writing about the rejection that artists and designers are repeatedly subject to experiencing.
In the following pages, I have compiled all the rejection letters I received over the past five years. I scoured my inbox and spreadsheets where I’d meticulously recorded all the opportunities I had applied for since 2020. Some were lost to inactive email accounts, some were deleted, and some employers and art spaces never emailed me back with a decision, as their way of communicating, they went in a different direction. I know of at least thirty more jobs that never reached out to provide a written rejection, and twenty or more rejections from art open calls that were declined on Submittable and other platforms that denoted the application status rather than a written notice. In my collection of rejection emails, I left out opportunities where I was waitlisted and later not selected, as well as opportunities I accepted that were canceled due to COVID, federal hiring freezes, and federal defunding of the arts and higher education.
The collection of rejection emails represents the jobs, internships, fellowships, residencies, art proposals, open calls, writing opportunities, curatorial proposals, volunteer positions, and art book fairs that I applied for—and didn’t get. In the following book, I have shared over sixty pages of rejection letters where I redacted the opportunity titles, the names of those sending the letters, and even my name, so readers can intuitively place their own names in the blanks. If some of these emails appear identical, it’s likely due to the standardized templates organizations use. Despite their similar appearance, each represents a different opportunity. The focus is not on reliving the rejection. The intention is that through depersonalizing rejection letters, we might gain a new perspective on our efforts, motivations, and the written form of professional rejections.
The truth is that any success is the product of much rejection, and that wins feel so good in contrast to the sting of rejection. I believe in many cases, the process of being rejected is crucial to crystallizing our success. During the five years that I received all the following rejection emails, I developed the language of
my practice through the repetition of writing application documents. I take joy in seeing the evolution of my documents from 2020 to now. The incremental improvements of my research, the accumulation of life experiences, and professional developments led to new experiences that built the foundation of my career. There was a time, however, when I applied haphazardly to as many things as possible. I would mentally beat myself up for missing an application. I’d obsess over every detail, hitting the submit button at 11:58 pm, and would have to stay up for at least another hour to catch my breath and come off the adrenaline. I still feel the compulsion to apply to many things as a sort of prerequisite for street credit, to appeal to the search committees of jobs I have yet to apply for, and to prove to my employers and peer group that I am not getting soft. But what I’ve come to realize is that even amidst this flood of rejections, I am successful. In fact, I believe these rejections are essential to that success. They’ve helped me remember why I do this work.
Each summer, I come back to myself the instant the school semester ends. I feel the need to slow down and remember I have a life outside of work. During these times, I remember that I make things because I want to. Few people buy my sculptures, furniture, and books and that’s okay. I'm not creating work to sell or show; I'm creating because I want to share the ideas I have with others. I want to make my ideas real. I enjoy making things, solving problems, and imagining speculative realities with the hope that these things can change the world.
Recently, I’ve been reading Don’t Believe Everything You Think: Why Your Thinking is the Beginning and End of Suffering by Joseph Nguyen, and one question from the book struck me deeply:
“If I had infinite money, already traveled the world, had no fear, and didn’t receive any recognition for what I do, what would I do or create?”
My answer is that I would continue to create the same art, but I wouldn’t apply for as many opportunities as I do. Many of the opportunities I’ve applied for felt like pulling teeth. I poured energy into application documents instead of making more art. Nguyen explains in his book how people set goals based on either 1) inspiration or 2) desperation. I was manically applying for opportunities out of desperation, which he characterizes as pursuing opportunities as a means to an end rather than pursuing the goal we wish to enjoy. For example, I had been applying for jobs I felt lukewarm about, which were tangential to the career I wanted to pursue in the long run. I was hoping these other experiences would show industry experience and would garner the respect of the search committees for the career I actually wanted. This is a great example of creating goals out of desperation– pursuing the means to an end rather than pursuing the end you wanted all along. I had been an expert for years at spreading myself thin for experiences, under the pretense of loving to learn, hoping that the process of chasing the wrong thing would lead to happiness. Obvious as it may seem now, it only brought me discontent. This summer, I have paused to find a healthier relationship with putting myself out there. I no longer want to write bespoke documents, contorting myself to meet the job postings of different experiences. Now, I try to only apply for opportunities I would genuinely rejoice in receiving. I want to live in the process, not just endure it. And although I do not particularly fish, I want the process of applying to feel like a quiet day fishing, where there is peace in the process of waiting, and excitement when something bites.
What I learned from Joseph Nguyen is that people have a natural resting state of being happy and joyful– I don’t have to do or achieve anything to feel those sensations. I can just quiet my thoughts. I do not have to listen to the words in my head telling me what I should be doing, and what I have to do to feel better. I have stopped forcing myself to apply for opportunities, and I have learned that life shouldn’t be that hard. After all, so many of these people rejecting me may have been reusing the same rejection email template for years. If they aren’t trying so hard, why am I? When it feels hard, I stop and remember that I am simply just thinking too much. I am focused more on trying to appease everyone but myself, and that is when I know I
am off track. Rejection is a fact of life. It’s just imperative you don’t reject yourself, your work, and your peace of mind in the process.
When we anonymize the names and titles in our rejection emails, we also release the narratives we built around them. We let go of alternate futures and begin to appreciate the one we are already living. A life full of meaning, creativity, and self-defined success. Rejection then no longer carries the weight of missed chances, but instead becomes an artifact that evidences our growth and perseverance.
So, cheers to rejection! Rejections are only the opportunities that said no before we did. In 2019, Capp Street Artist in Residence, Abbas Akhavan, told me and my MFA cohort that we, as creative people, should keep a list of all the opportunities we said no to, or in other words, the opportunities we did not take. I love this sentiment and will make a point to do this someday. For now, I have collected my rejection letters and reflected on what rejection means to me. This way, I can have a more constructive relationship with being told no, and I can learn how to conserve my energy while I continue to move forward.
My intention for this book is to help you release some of the pain associated with rejection by making it less personal. Look less at how they did not select me or you, and see what they said. Through the process of rereading these redacted emails, I can see now how many people found ways to impart kindness and hope in the rejections. Some invited me to the very exhibitions where they did not select my work, some offered me other opportunities after rejecting me from the one I had applied for, and some were impersonal and curt in a way that makes me grateful we did not work together.
I hope you can see the wisdom in all those who said no to you. And maybe now we can marvel and critique the eloquence with which people told us no.
Dear Mallory,
Thank you for your interest in the Visiting Assistant Professor of Studio Art position at Susquehanna University.

HI Mallory,
I'm reaching out with an update on the residency selection process. We appreciate your patience during the review process, especially as it took a bit longer than expected due to the high volume of strong applicants. Unfortunately we will not have the space to accept you into the program this year, but very much appreciate your work and your application.
We are disappointed not to have space for all qualified applicants and I want to thank you again for sharing your practice with us. We will certainly keep an eye out for updates on your work in the future.
My very best,
Hello!
Thank you for taking the time to fill out the Pittsburgh Art Book Fair application.
We are writing to let you know that we are unable to offer you a table at the Pittsburgh Art Book Fair this fall. We were positively overwhelmed with the number of applications we received this year, and with the limited space that we are working with, we unfortunately could not include everyone who applied. We welcome you to apply again next year, keeping in mind that we require vendors/exhibitors to exhibit roughly 70% bound material for sale. Clear photographs of your publications, as well as detailed explanations of what you will be exhibiting are really helpful in our juried process.
If you are in the area on September 28th + 29th, we encourage you to attend the second-annual PABF at the Carnegie Museum of Art from 10am-5pm! We would love your presence and support.
If you would like to receive information about PABF events, exhibitor applications, etc, please subscribe to our Substack if you are not already: https://pittsburghartbookfair.substack.com/
Best of luck with all of your publishing and book projects!

Dear Mallory,
Thank you so much for interviewing with us for the Residency Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington and congratulations for being one of the top candidates in consideration. Catie and I were both extremely impressed with your practice, but unfortunately you were not selected for a studio at this time.
We’d like you to know that we will keep you in mind for initiatives that we have coming up in the future. As we mentioned in the interview we have opportunities with Amazon and other community engagement projects where your work could be a great fit.
Keep in mind that many of the artists who are currently in the program had to apply for studios several times over, so we highly encourage you to apply again!
We wish you the best of luck with your practice, keep up the great work and please don’t be a stranger.
Sincerely, Amanda
Dear Mallory,
On behalf of the Hamiltonian Artists team and our 2023 jurors, thank you again for your interest in the Hamiltonian Artists Fellowship program.
We regret to inform you that you have not been selected for the fellowship program this year. We acknowledge the time and energy you put into the materials you submitted, and greatly appreciate your patience throughout the application review process. The process of narrowing down the applicant pool was challenging as this was our most competitive application cycle to date. We received over 150 submissions, composed by many highly qualified candidates.
This decision was not necessarily a negative assessment of your skills or accomplishments, but one made with a number of factors in mind, including the composition of the cohort, where artists are in their careers, location, and more. We invite a new group of jurors to review applications each cycle and encourage you to apply again next year. We are offering every single applicant the option to book a 15-minute feedback session on their applications.

Dear Mallory,
Thank you for applying for the Gibbs Street Residency. We appreciate your patience during a longer than usual review period. The caliber of work, professional accomplishments, and promise was excellent making it a highly competitive field. With nearly 100 applications and only 2 available residency slots, the selection process was very difficult.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer you a residency at this time. This however should in no way be taken as a reflection on the quality of your work or proposal, we encourage you to reapply in the future.

Mallory,
Thank you so much for submitting to PRESS ON. I am sorry to inform you that your work was not selected for the exhibition. There were over 400 works submitted and the jurors had the difficult job of narrowing it down by half. Tough decisions were made as there were so many great pieces from which to choose. I hope that we get to see your work again soon and that you keep Pyramid on your radar for upcoming opportunities.

Dear Mallory
Thank you for your application for The Nicholson Project's Residency Program. We received 194 applications this year from local, national, and international artists. Unfortunately, we have a very limited number of slots for Residencies each year, and we can only accept four proposals. After an extensive two-part review process in which you were a finalist, we have decided not to move forward with your application for our in-house residency program. That said, we were impressed with your work and your application and would like to offer you a 1-week Digital Residency in 2025.
A Digital Residency is a 5-day online residency that is hosted on our Instagram and on our website as well. We would compensate you $500 for your efforts with the intent of unveiling a new work (artwork, song, dance performance, poem, etc) on the last day. If you are interested, we can send you more details, but essentially you are given a framework with questions to answer and a shared Google folder to add any images, video, or audio. It starts with an introduction to you and your practice, followed by asking about your inspiration, a behind-the-scenes look at your studio or practice space, etc, then on the last day would be the unveiling. This is not an Instagram takeover, rather you prepare the materials in advance and my colleague, Akilah Hartgrove (cc'd here) handles the actual posting/sharing of the content.
Let us know if you would like to accept the Digital Residency, and Akilah will follow up with you with more details.

Dear Smithsonian American Art Museum Intern Applicant,
Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer you an internship this academic year. We received an exceptional number of applications this year. Please know that it was very difficult for us to choose such a small number of students from the many talented and enthusiastic candidates, like you, who applied.
Thank you so much for your interest in our museum, your patience, and the time you took to submit your application.
Please allow me to extend our very best wishes for a wonderful summer, as well as for success in your future academic and career pursuits.
With best regards,
Avriel Glass (she/her)
Management Support Assistant, Research and Scholars Center
Dear Mallory,
Thank you very much, again, for your patience while we were making placements for the academic year.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer you an internship at this time. If you would like to reapply for the program next year, let us know, and we will keep your application on-file. We request that you submit an updated resume and transcripts (if applicable) before June 1, 2023 to: American Art Intern Programs AmericanArtInternPro@si.edu
Renewing all other application materials are at your discretion.
Your application is very strong. Regrettably we have very limited positions in the areas that you seem to have the most experience. My only advice is to keep applying and keep expanding your network. For example, your replies back to Judith Houston Hollomon, SAAM Intern Program Officer, has definitely garnered some bonus points. I know that she will keep you in mind if something passes her desk that requires your skills.
I wish you the very best in your pursuits, something will come along!
Very respectfully,
Stacy

Hello Mallory Kimmel,
On behalf of the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District and the 2024 Trawick Prize jury, I would like to thank you for entering The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards. Our jurors were honored to have the opportunity to review the creative and exciting work from a vast selection of area artists.
We received entries from 400 artists, and the jury spent numerous hours reviewing before making some very complicated decisions. We truly appreciate your time and talent; however, your work was not selected.
Thank you for your interest and we hope you will consider applying to next year’s competition when a different panel of judges will select the finalists and winners.
We wish you the best of luck in your future artistic endeavors.
Sincerely,
Emma Quinn
Dear Artists,
As promised, I am writing to inform you that our jury process is complete. We have finalized our jury and curatorial process for this show. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to craft an exceptional exhibit as part of our 21st season.
We had a great response to this opportunity. Our jurors considered 126 works submitted by 43 artists from across the U.S. and beyond.
Unfortunately, your work was not selected for inclusion in the exhibit.
On behalf of Manifest's staff and board of directors, thank you for submitting to this exhibition. As I’m sure you’ve heard before from us or other venues, many exceptional works were submitted, and we couldn’t take them all. Saying ‘no’ is difficult for us because we love the richness and variety of our submission pools. But by saying ’no’, we end up with exquisite, selective, and intensely assembled final exhibits.
As many of you know, we go to the effort of designing each exhibit in a scale model plan in order to help us finalize selections and fit them together in a meaningful arrangement so that the whole ends up like a good work of art, greater than the sum of its parts. If all the parts we’re working with are already validated as being excellent by a jury of peers, then our efforts to assemble the exhibit through such a painstaking process should result in something extra special. And this is generally what people feel happens in exhibit after exhibit at Manifest. This strength and continuity of quality is memorialized by our Exhibition Annual publications for each gallery season.
As artists ourselves, all our staff are familiar with the experience of not being accepted into exhibits. So it is not lightly that we send you this notification. Without so many artists’ participation, Manifest would not be celebrating its
20th exhibition season as a nationally valued non-profit 501(c)(3) arts organization. Manifest exists and operates in large part by artists, for artists.
The details and stats for this exhibit will be listed on our website’s exhibit page in the coming weeks.
If possible, I encourage you to see the show and/or view the Exhibition Annual publication once it is available sometime after the season ends. We will also be making extra efforts to share images of the works and gallery installations throughout the exhibit period on social media.
Please remember that our juries are conducted blind, and our jury makeup changes from project to project. Not being accepted into one project does not mean your work will not fare well in another. And as in any competitive process, persistence generally leads to success. Whether your persistence is applied to our projects or to others, we encourage you to keep it up!
Please Note: So many works in this recent round of juries could fare very well in our publication projects or future exhibits. These include the open thematic group exhibitions that are accepting submissions to continue the season. To see the new and upcoming Manifest projects currently taking submissions, visit www.manifestgallery.org/projects.
Thank you again so much for sharing your work. I hope you feel Manifest has been professional and considerate of your time and efforts.
Best regards.
Dear Mallory,
Thank you for applying for the Guest Curator position at Notre Dame of Maryland University and for taking the time to speak with us over Zoom. We enjoyed learning more about your past and current work, and hearing about your vision for Gormley Gallery.
I write to inform you that we have made an offer to another candidate, who has accepted the position for next year. We were truly impressed by your credentials and your ideas for Gormley, and we hope you are amenable to staying in touch as future opportunities to collaborate arise.
Thank you again for your application, and all best regards,
Jennifer Wester

Hello all!
Thank you so so much for filling out our volunteer application earlier this season. We wanted to update everyone as the responses were overwhelming (more than 50 of you filled out an application!). We have been slowly reaching out to folks who applied to work with us in different areas. At this point we've reached out to clinical and community herbalists, facilitators, folks who want to help with set up and breakdown and folks who applied for the apprenticeship. We will continue reaching out to folks as we can but whew, volunteer coordination actually takes so much time and we are still a small volunteer team of 5 working behind the scenes.
So in the meantime, we wanted to share our gratitude for all of you and send you our July calendar of events so that you can begin to plug in with us as early as next weekend! We will continue to announce new events on instagram (@dcmutualaidapothecary) so make sure you have your notifications on for us! Here is the direct link to the eventbrite to reserve your spot for medicine making: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/medicine-making-day-tickets-374483358807.
Hope to see you all at one of our events this month!

Hi Mallory,
I want to say that Emily and I both very much enjoyed our interview with you for the Gallery Assistant Position but have chosen to go with another candidate for that job.
There is a position that just posted today that I think you may be more interested in than the Gallery Assistant position- which is the Art Collection Technician. This position would still be a part of the Galleries' team, but with a primary focus on the College Collections.
I encourage you to apply.

Dear Mallory,
Thank you for your interest in the Curator, AHS Washingtoniana Collection position with The George Washington University. A great deal of thought and consideration went into reviewing the qualifications of all who applied. After careful review of the impressive applications/resumes we received, a small group of individuals were selected for the interview process. Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that you were not among the final group selected for an interview.
We sincerely appreciate your interest in our position and encourage you to continue to review our website, http://www.gwu.jobs/, for other positions of interest. We wish you success in your career endeavors.

Hi Mallory,
Thank you for your interest in the GW Museum and Textile Museum. Maria and I were both very impressed with your various experiences, interest in teaching as well as your collection work at the CCBC, however, we have chosen someone else for this position.
If you are interested in moving towards a more collection focused role, I would suggest looking into some collection management courses or seminars to help gain a academic understanding of the work you are already doing. As a teacher at GW, it’s possible you *may* qualify for staff/employee tuition assistance/reimbursement for museum studies classes or similar.
I wish you the best of luck in your continued search and career.
Best,
Keri
