NEAR PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA AND ADJACENT TO THE OHIO RIVER SITS A BROWN FIELD ONCE OCCUPIED BY A LUMBER AND GLASS MANUFACTURING COMPANY. DUE TO CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION AND A LANDFILL SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE AREA, THIS PLOT OF LAND REMAINS VACANT---ONLY LEAVING REMAINING RETAINING WALLS AND LARGE SLABS OF CONCRETE.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS BUILDING AND LANDSCAPE ORGANIZATION IS TO RESTORE ECOLOGY AND TO CREATE A SPACE FOR THE PUBLIC TO LEARN ABOUT NATURAL RESTORATION. BY SUPERIMPOSING A CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL WITHIN THIS URBAN FABRIC, IT HELPS HEAL THE CONTAMINATED SOIL AND CREATE A SPACE OF SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE CITIZENS OF VIENNA.

THE SLOPE OF THE LAND DROPS APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET RUNNING EAST TO WEST, SO IT WAS IMPORTANT TO STUDY THE SECTIONAL QUALITIES OF THE BUILDING. ORIGINAL SKETCHES SHOW THE INITIAL IDEAS OF HAVING A BUILDING THAT IS HALF BURIED BENEATH THE GROUND----SLIGHTLY TILTED UPWARDS BASED ON A SINGLE RADIAL POINT. OVERALL ORGANIZATION OF THE LANDSCAPE AND ORIENTATION OF THE BUILDING IS BASED OFF OF A CHOSEN PARTI (CIRCLE) AND PATTERN (GRID). SEVERAL RESTORATIVE PROCESSES HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED ON THE SITE INCLUDING RETAINING PONDS TO COMBAT THE FLOOD-PRONE SOIL, TERRACED BURIAL SPACES, AND A TRAIN TUNNEL THAT EXTENDS THE AMOUNT OF ECOLOGY ON THE SOFT-SCAPE

BY STUDYING THIS LOCATION AT A TERRITORIAL SCALE, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT THERE IS NEED FOR A CEREMONIAL SPACE IN THIS AREA. SEVERAL VETERANS MEMORIALS AND PARKS DEDICATED TO THOSE THAT HAVE PASSED SHOWED THAT PROVIDING FUNERAL SERVICES WOULD BENEFIT THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THIS COMMUNITY.

THE BUILDING----LOCATED IN THE TOP OF THE SITE---HOLDS SEVERAL PROGRAMMATIC PIECES THAT BOTH RESTORE ECOLOGY AND AID FUNERAL SERVICES. THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING IS A SLIVER OF A MONUMENTAL, CONCRETE FACADE. ITS PERIMETER CONTAINS A PROCESSION PATH FOR VISITORS TO OVERLOOK THE ENTIRE SITE AND OHIO RIVER. A COMPOSITION OF SHAPES LOCATED ON THE ROOF OF THE BUILDING ACT AS SKYLIGHTS TO BRING NATURAL LIGHT TO THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE, WHILE ALSO ALLOWING THOSE WALKING ACROSS THE ROOF TO VIEW CEREMONIES OCCURRING BELOW.

LOCATED ON AN EXISTING SCULPTURE PARK, THIS PLOT OF LAND IS A PENINSULA SURROUNDED BY THREE MAJOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS---CASE

WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY ON THE EAST, THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART TO THE NORTH, AND THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ARTS TO ITS WEST.

SITUATED WITHIN A HUB OF EDUCATION, THIS WELLNESS CENTER CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT FOR TOURISTS, STUDENTS, AND FACULTY TO CONTEMPLATE---WEBBING TOGETHER THE THREE LARGE ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROMOTE EDUCATION, WHILE PROVIDING A SPACE FOR COMMUNITY WELLNESS.

IT WAS IMPORTANT TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT CONTRASTS THE BUSY AND TUMULTUOUS STATE OF DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND BY FOCUSING ON THE MEDITATIVE QUALITIES THAT SENSORY AFFECTS AND VARIOUS SPACIAL STRATEGIES CAN INCITE.

THE FORM OF THIS STRUCTURE WAS GENERATED FROM THE PATTERNS OF OCCUPATIONAL MOVEMENT. A SHELL WAS FORMED FROM BRIDGING THE TWO OPPOSING SIDES OF THE SITE---CAMPUS LIFE TO BUSINESSES. TO CREATE A STARK DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING, A GRAND ENTRANCE DESCENDS TO A CAVE-LIKE ATMOSPHERE. THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE HEAVILY DEPENDS ON ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING, CREATING CURATED SPACES THAT REFLECT SPECIFIC EMOTIONS. VARYING COLOR, LIGHTING, AND TEXTURES DIFFERENTIATE THE ATMOSPHERE EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS. ADDITIONAL LIGHTING METHODS ARE USED THROUGH PUNCHED-OUT SLIVERS IN THE STEEL ROOF. THE APERTURES---FORMED FROM INDEPENDENT MEDITATIVE PRACTICES SEEN IN THE SKETCH TO THE LEFT---ARE PROJECTED ONTO THE ROOF, CREATING OPENINGS FOR LIGHT TO PEEK THROUGH.

THE CONTEMPLATIVE PODS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE MAIN STRUCTURE ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO CURATE THEIR OWN MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE WHILE VISITING. EACH TYPE OF SPACE HOLDS PROGRAMS THAT RANGE IN PHYSICALITY AND EMOTION. THIS GIVES PEOPLE AUTONOMY TO DISCOVER WHAT “WELLNESS” MEANS TO THEM. OTHER IMPORTANT SPACES INCLUDE THE FRONT ENTRANCE THAT IS ENCAPSULATED BY A HOVERING CAGE-LIKE STRUCTURE----MIMICKING THE EXTERIOR SHAPE OF THE BUILDING AT A SMALLER SCALE----AND THE OPEN AIR AUDITORIUM THAT BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE PROGRAMS HELD INSIDE.

LOCATED ON A HISTORIC AND HIGHLY PUBLIC AREA, THIS DESIGN CATERS TO THE COMMUNITY NEED FOR GREEN SPACE AND MULTIPURPOSE AREAS. USING THREE MAIN BLADES PROJECTING FROM UNDERNEATH THE GROUND, THE EXISTING URBAN LAYOUT BECOMES INTERRUPTED. THIS ALLOWS FOR A NEW LOGIC CONCERNING PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT AND BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN DEMOGRAPHICS, SUCH AS TOURISTS AND RESIDENTS.

A HIGHLY ARTICULATED LANDSCAPE AGAINST A SERIES OF SIMPLE FACES COMPOSES SPACE FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS TO OCCUR LIKE THE WEEKLY FLEA MARKETS, SOCCER MATCHES AMONGST FLORENCE RESIDENTS, AND SIMPLE WALKS FROM ONE SIDE OF THE SITE TO THE OTHER. A SINGLE FORCED PERSPECTIVE STARTING FROM THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SITE, EXTENDS FROM LOGGIA DEL PESCE. THIS MOVE UNITES THE LANDSCAPE EXTRUSIONS AND ALL THREE BLADES INTO ONE SINGULAR PATH. ADDITIONAL LATITUDINAL ENTRANCES ARE PLACED WITHIN THE BLADES TO ACCESS THE THREE UNDERGROUND FLOORS BENEATH THE CURATED PIAZZA.

AN IMPORTANT CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT IS THE IDEA OF PERMEABLE BARRIERS AND THE SOLID VS VOID RELATIONSHIP. THE ARCHETYPE OF A LOGGIA SUGGESTS A STRUCTURE OF PURE VOID, WITH ONLY A ROOF AND ARCHES TO CREATE SPACE. A REFLECTION OF THIS IDEA IS SEEN WITHIN THE PLAN OF THE THREE BLADES. AS ONE MOVES NORTH TO SOUTH THROUGH THE SITE, SLOWLY THE STRUCTURES BECOME MORE SOLID, GENERATING A HEAVIER MASS THROUGH WHICH TO PROCEED. EVENTUALLY, THE BLADES BEGIN TO DIGRESS FROM THE LOGGIA ARCHETYPE AND BECOME A MORE SOLID STRUCTURE.

THE EXTREME HEAT AND UNIQUE MIRCOCLIMATE OF CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK IN UTAH REQUIRES A SUSTAINABILITY CONSCIOUS SET OF DESIGN STRATEGIES. DEVELOPING FOR SUCH A DISTINCTIVE ENVIRONMENT DEMANDS IMPLEMENTATION OF HEAT REFLECTIVE MATERIALS, SPACE FOR NEW ECOLOGY TO GROW, AND INTEGRATION OF PASSIVE LIGHT STRATEGIES. A SINGULAR SPIRAL SHAPE CHARACTERIZES THE FORMAL TECHNIQUE OF DESCENSION INTO THE CANYON ALONG WITH SEVERAL RESILIENT TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIES.

THE FORM OF THIS RESEARCH LAB DESCENDS AS SPIRAL FORM INTO THE CANYON. THIS MESA---APPROXIMATELY 120 FT TALL---PROVIDES SPACE FOR VARIOUS PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS TO BE HELD WITHIN ITS MICROCLIMATE. THE DESIGN OF THIS BUILDING EMPHASIZES A JOURNEY, HIGHLIGHTING THE ENTRANCE AND ENDING OF THE SPIRAL. AS OCCUPANTS APPROACH THE BUILDING ENTRANCE THEY HAVE THE CHOICE OF DESCENDING INTO THE MAIN LIVING SPACE OR ASCENDING TO THE WALKABLE ROOF. THE END OF THE SPIRAL HOLDS SPACE FOR AN ALL CONFERENCE MEETING ROOM THAT CAN ACT AS A SPACE FOR GROUP ANALYSIS AND LECTURES. ALL THE WHILE, OCCUPANTS OF THE SPACE ARE AT THE LOWEST POINT OF THE CANYON, SURROUNDED BY THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY ARE STUDYING.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCAFFOLDING SYSTEM STEMS FROM A SERIES OF PRECEDENT STUDIES. A COMBINATION OF TWO SETS OF DRAWING TECHNIQUES PRODUCED A SPIRAL SHAPE. THIS SPIRAL GENERATES THE SCAFFOLDING SYSTEM THAT SUPPORTS THE BUILDING LOADS AND NATURALLY OCCURRING WIND LOADS. THE UNIQUENESS OF THIS SYSTEM IS IN IT’S CIRCULAR SHAPE AND ABILITY TO HOLD ECOLOGY PODS. THESE SMALL SCALE OBJECTS CAN BE USED AS CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS FOR LAB WORKERS TO MONITOR SOIL SAMPLES.

AN IMPORTANT CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT IS THE IDEA OF ACCESSIBILITY. THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS WITHIN THIS DESIGN ALLOWS FOR WORKERS TO DESCEND THE CANYON NOT ONLY FROM THE MAIN SPIRALING FORM BUT ALSO THE EXTERIOR SCAFFOLDING. PEOPLE OCCUPYING THIS SPACE CAN REACH FROM ONE LEVEL TO ANOTHER BY UNIFORM RAMPS DISPERSED ALONG THE SPIRAL. THE IMAGE TO THE RIGHT IS A PHYSICAL MODEL OF THIS SYSTEM AND A HYPOTHETICAL REPRESENTATION OF HOW THIS STRUCTURAL ELEMENT CAN BE USED.

THE ROOF IS HIGHLY ARTICULATED BY A PROJECTED PATTERN OF THE CANYON’S TOPOGRAPHY. A SYSTEM OF POLYCARBONATE AND BITUMEN ROOFING ALLOWS FOR AN OPTIMIZED AMOUNT OF INDIRECT, NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING.

THE SITE IS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN KENT, OH, NEXT TO VARIOUS LOCAL BUSINESSES. THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY THE BEING A CORNER LOT ---THE INTERSECTION OF FRANKLIN AVENUE AND WEST COLLEGE AVENUE. THIS CORNER DICTATED THE HINGING ASPECT OF THE DESIGN, WHERE THE INTERIOR SPACE BEGINS TO TRANSITION FROM PUBLIC TO PRIVATE SPACE.

THIS DESIGN ALSO ALLOWS FOR OPTIMAL SPACE FOR DENTISTRY EQUIPMENT THROUGHOUT THE OFFICE. THESE ELEMENTS INCLUDE DENTAL CHAIRS, OPERATING LIGHTS, X RAY AREAS / SHELVING, SPACE FOR PPE STORAGE, TOUCH-LESS OPERATING SYSTEMS TO ENTER ROOMS, AND PROPER PATIENT MANAGEMENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO ORGANIZE HEALTH RECORDS WITHIN THE RECEPTION SPACE.

SEVERAL ELEMENTS WERE CONSIDERED WITHIN THIS DESIGN---HVAC ZONING, ORGANIZATION OF WATER SUPPLY LINES, LIGHTING TECHNIQUES FOR EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF ILLUMINATING SYSTEMS, AND STRATEGIES FOR REMOVING WASTE WATER FROM THE BUILDING. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CHASE WALLS, PARAPETS ON THE ROOF, AND WATER FEATURES DESIGNED ON AXIAL POINTS ALLOWED THE DENTISTRY OFFICE TO NOT ONLY LOOK VISUALLY APPEALING, BUT ALSO OPTIMIZE ITS INTERNAL SYSTEMS..

THIS DESIGN EXPERIMENTS WITH THE USE OF RULED GEOMETRY ON A BUILDING’S FACADE, CONSIDERING HOW AN ENVELOPE SYSTEM CAN EXPRESS ITS INTERNAL MEMBERS. THIS MIXED OCCUPANCY MULTI-STORY BUILDING IS CONSTRUCTED OUT OF STEEL FRAMING AND IS SET WITHIN A GRIDDED 20’ X 20’ COLUMN SYSTEM. THE THREE MAIN FACADE MATERIALS IS A MIX BETWEEN LOW-E WINDOW GLAZING, INSULATED METAL PANELS, AND STEEL MULLIONS THAT MAKE UP A UNITIZED CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM.

DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM, MOST OF THE FACADE UTILIZES A UNITIZED CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM. THESE COMPONENTS ARE ASSEMBLED IN THE FACTORY THEN BROUGHT TO THE SITE. THIS IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE SYSTEM FOR THE BUILDING’S SIZE, HOWEVER SOME PANELS—LIKE THE DIAGONAL SAWTOOTH ELEMENTS —MAY NEED TO BE ASSEMBLED IN THE FIELD. THIS IS DUE TO THEIR UNIQUE SHAPES AND ANGULAR CONNECTIONS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STANDARDIZE. EACH PART OF THIS CURTAIN WALL SPANS FROM ONE FLOOR SLAB TO ANOTHER, YET INCLUDES FIRE-STOPPING METHODS THAT MAINTAINS THE STRUCTURE’S FIRE SAFETY.

SKETCHING IS A KEY TOOL TO EXPRESSING MY METHODOLOGY AND PROCESS. IT IS A WAY TO QUICKLY ANALYZE THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT, PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT, SOCIAL PATTERNS, AND DESIGN INTENTIONS OF OTHER ARCHITECTS. ADDITIONALLY, IT IS A SKILL THAT CAN BE USED IN THE FINAL PRODUCTION OF A PROJECT, ALLOWING ME TO PUT MY CONCEPTS ONTO PAPER QUICKLY.

THESE SKETCHES DEPICT A SERIES OF CURATED OBJECTS MEANT TO BE USED WITHIN A CEMETERY. EACH ELEMENT IS FORMED BY THE COMBINATION OF A CMU BLOCK AND A PIECE OF TRASH: GARDEN HOSE, BROKEN UMBRELLA, CUCKCOO CLOCK, ETC.

THE MOMENT WHERE THESE TWO CONTRASTING ELEMENTS MEET, IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE NEW HABITATS FOR VARIOUS SPECIES LIVING ON THE GROUNDS OF THE CEMETERY---THIS EXAMPLE BEING LOCATED IN VIENNA, WV. ADDITIONALLY, THE CMU BLOCKS HOLD SPACE ON THEIR SURFACES TO BE INGRAINED WITH MEMENTOS, ACTING AS MEMORIALS IN DEDICATION TO THOSE WHO HAVE PASSED.
