Nuevos y buenos tiempos para el Club Good times ahead for the Club

E

l mandato de la actual presidencia del Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença finaliza de la mejor manera imaginable: con una nueva concesión para la gestión del puerto otros 35 años más y un proyecto de adaptación integral de las instalaciones cuyas obras empezarán el próximo otoño y concluirán en 2021. La consecución de la concesión libera al Club de su espada de Damocles, de una situación que solo permitía gestionar lo inmediato, lo cortoplacista, para de repente poder afrontar retos necesarios en el medio y largo plazo, que es la perspectiva en la que se mueve el plan de obras para el próximo trienio.

En el capítulo de logros deportivos relevantes hay que apuntar el de la organización del Campeonato Nacional de Fondo de Jóvenes Promesas en piragüismo, celebrado el pasado mes de abril, que paseó el nombre de nuestra institución por toda la geografía nacional como ejemplo de buen hacer, además de dejar una notable remesa de medallas entre nuestros deportistas. Referentes destacados como Sete Benavides y Toni Segura o Kiko Martín marcan la diferencia y lo hacen todo más fácil, que no con menos esfuerzo.

Por otro lado, la oportuna apuesta por la vela -con el fichaje de Albert Vadell y el nombramiento de Joan Andreu Pizá al frente de la escuelaha sido uno de los grandes aciertos que, sin duda, empezará a dar frutos más pronto que tarde. El objetivo de conseguir masa crítica es plausible por imprescindible; es la pescadilla que se muerde la cola: cuantos más deportistas, más presencia tendremos en las competiciones y, al mismo tiempo, más opciones de buenos resultados, lo que atraerá de manera natural a más deportistas.

La incorporación reciente de la disciplina del Kite Surf, con la celebración de una regata el pasado mes de junio, es una atrevida e innovadora apuesta a la que hay que dar la bienvenida y cuidar, ya que puede llegar a convertir el Club en un referente de un deporte que encuentra buenos campos de práctica en nuestras costas.

Por último, decir que las palabras del presidente Alan Ponte en la entrevista que publicamos en este ejemplar (“Estamos aumentando la reputación del Club”) no son gratuitas ni fruto de un optimismo desmedido. El Club se está recomponiendo de forma sensata, sólida y con proyección de futuro. Da la impresión de que una vez superado el gran escollo de la concesión portuaria, se ha abierto un nuevo horizonte cargado de grandes expectativas.

Al cierre de esta edición, nadie se postula abiertamente como candidato a la presidencia del próximo cuatrienio, lo que suponemos que hay que atribuirlo más a la discreción que a otra cosa, porque en estos momentos el Club navega con vientos portantes.

he mandate of the current presidency at the Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença has come to an end in the best way imaginable: with a new 35-year concession for port management and a comprehensive adaptation project for the facilities. Work will begin next autumn and end in 2021. Achieving this concession removes the Damocles sword hanging over the Club, a situation where they could only manage immediate and short-term challenges, nothing medium and long term like a construction plan for the next three years.

As for significant sporting achievements the Club organised the national championships for youth showing promise in canoeing las April. The name of the Club was mentioned all over the country as an example of how to organise and event well, and there were a remarkable number of medals distributed between the Club's participating athletes. Names that stand out are Sete Benavides, Toni Segura and Kiko Martín, as they showed how to do it with ease, yet great effort.

The club also maintains its commitment to sailing, signing Albert Vadell, and naming Joan Andreu Pizá as head of the sailing school.

This has been a great achievement and will without doubt bear fruit sooner rather than later. The aim is to reach critical mass, which seems both plausible and essential. The idea is that the more athletes at the Club, the larger its presence in competitions. This means more opportunities for good results, which will attract even more athletes, as a natural progression.

The recent incorporation of kitesurfing – with the competition held last June – is a daring and innovative move that should be welcomed and cherished, since it might turn the Club into a sporting reference, finding new and exciting initiatives for sport practised along the island's coastlines.

The words of our president Alan Ponte during the interview published in this issue are worth mentioning (“We are heightening the Club's reputation”). These words do not come for free, and they are not a result of excessive optimism. Rather, the Club is recomposing itself sensibly, solidly and with an eye to the future. It looks like it has overcome the great hurdle in the shape of the port concession, and opened up a new horizon filled with great expectations.

At the close of this issue no one has openly stepped forward as a candidate for the next four years' presidency. But this is probably more due to discretion than anything else, since the Club is sailing in favourable winds right now.

Alan Ponte no tiene pelos en la lengua. Intenta expresarse en bon mallorquí con todos los socios con los que se cruza en el Puerto. Un francobritánico que vive en Suiza, con llaüt en el Port desde hace décadas y que, tras llegar a la presidencia después del controvertido mandato de su antecesor, culmina este cuatrienio con nota: la consecución de una nueva concesión por otros 35 años. Ahora, a un paso de las elecciones, prefiere no pronunciarse sobre si repetirá candidatura. ¿Ha sido muy complicado renovar la concesión antes de que caducara, en julio?

No es una renovación, es una concesión nueva.

Estaba previsto que caducara en julio, pero la ley balear de puertos, que reduce a 30 años las concesiones como dicta la Ley de Costas, daba una oportunidad para una nueva concesión presentando un proyecto de renovación de los clubes. La adaptación ha sido compleja porque, entre otras cosas, en los ochenta se vendieron derechos preferentes de amarre, en nuestro caso a unos a 225 socios, para un periodo de 50 años, pero después en realidad quedaron en 30.

Accedió a la presidencia en un momento convulso para el Club.

El presidente Ferran Porto, en 2007, había presentado la solicitud de nueva concesión. En 2011, Ports-IB hizo una oferta con un aumento del canon de 20.600 al año a unos 411.000 euros. Un horror.

A finales de 2012 el nuevo presidente Siquier propuso a la asamblea que se rechazara la oferta. Lo que no dijo es que de esa manera la concesión terminaría en 2018. Fue entonces cuando varios socios me pidieron liderar una moción de censura contra ese presidente, aunque acabo dimitiendo.

Entonces llegó su turno…

Sí, así fue. Tuvimos elecciones en agosto 2014 y nunca había pensado ser presidente de este club sabiendo además que iba a ser el mandato más di-

fícil de su historia. Fui elegido por aclamación en una reunión de más de 200 personas, mucha gente.

Pero esa aclamación no ahuyentó los problemas.

Yo sabía que tendría un enorme problema en las transmisiones de los amarres por sus titulares. Se creían que los compraban para 50 años, pero no, terminaba en 2018… El problema también era que mi candidatura contenía mayoría de titulares de amarres (de 11 directivos, 6 eran titulares con derecho preferente), que podían forzar votos. Al final, presentamos a la asamblea un acuerdo por el que si ellos pagaban cinco millones de los siete de inversiones, podrían continuar veinte años más; porque he conseguido una concesión para 35 años, otorgada el año pasado. Hay que decir en público que el director general de Ports-IB, Xavier Ramis, y el gerente, Pedro Puigdengoles, se portaron muy bien con la nueva concesión. No digo que el resultado sea perfecto, pero es un resultado. Se impugnó pero se rechazó la impugnación. Ahora estamos preparando el proyecto ejecutivo para presentar a Ports-IB.

Este puerto fue construido en el 88/89 y en los últimos 30 años las mangas de los barcos han crecido, lo que genera problemas a la capacidad de los puertos porque las medidas de los amarres no han variado. Tenemos que ampliar esos amarres,

usaremos los de transeúntes para ganar manga.

También hemos hecho una inspección submarina, pondremos nuevas columnas, aumentaremos la altura del pantalán, renovaremos tuberías, actualizaremos los espacios edificatorios, etc. También ganaremos en parking. Dese cuenta de que tenemos unos 1.400 socios para 300/400 aparcamientos, en verano es un lío. ¿Tiene posibilidades de crecimiento el puerto?

No. Desde las últimas elecciones, el Govern del Pacte aprobó una moratoria que prohíbe el crecimiento de cualquier puerto deportivo. Hace tiempo presentamos un proyecto de aumento pequeño, fuera de la escollera, que hubiera permitido unos 60 amarres más, pero ha decaído.

Hábleme del proyecto deportivo.

En piragua tenemos al mejor entrenador de España, Kiko Martín. Este club náutico lleva muchas más copas en piragüismo que cualquier otro de España. Parte muy importante es que tenemos a Sete Benavides, un modelo de deportista para todos. En vela, es difícil pero lo he intentado con Pere Antoni Nadal, responsable de deportes. Le encanta y se lo ha tomado muy en serio. Le he prometido que pondré todos los recursos necesarios para mejorar. Hemos conseguido mucho en vela ligera, en optimist, en 420.... En cruceros es complicado porque no hay tanta gente interesada en regatear. En el Arenal, como en muchos otros puertos, todos los socios son regatistas, aquí no. También tenemos una flota de flying fifteen, no olímpico, pero es un encanto de vela. Creo que estamos aumentando nuestra reputación en Baleares. ¿Y el Open de Pesca?

Este año se cumple el XXV aniversario de la celebración de la pesca de atún. El primer año estábamos 12 barcos: 3 de aquí y 9 franceses. De esta prueba ha salido toda la industria de pesca. Hay

que tener barcos muy rápidos. Nuestra competición es de pesca sin muerte, en la que hemos sido pioneros, el primer club de España en hacer una competición sin muerte. En esta modalidad conservacionista llevamos once años.

puerto hacía publicidad en internet para alquilar por semanas, como si fuera un piso. Este riesgo dejará de existir porque a partir del año que viene, todos los alquileres de amarres serán gestionados por el Club.

¿Qué tal el ambiente del Club?

No tenemos muchos actos sociales. Hubiera querido pero es muy difícil. Tenga en cuenta que el 60% de los socios no viven en Baleares: un 40% son mallorquines; un 20% españoles y un 40 extranjeros, mayormente británicos, aunque hay de muchas nacionalidades. Pero no hay la suficiente masa crítica durante todo el año, de manera estable, para mantener una actividad viva permanentemente. Cuesta mucho.

¿Se presentará a la reelección?

Por ahora solo puedo decir no comments. No he decidido, la verdad. Depende de si la gente quiere o no. Veremos.

El nuevo presidente deberá afrontar el proyecto de las obras aprobadas en su mandato.

Sí, además lo que hemos decidido, sin comprometer el futuro, es que haya un organismo externo de control de la ejecución de las obras y de los presupuestos para que haya total transparencia. ¿Alguna anécdota reciente?

member of the club he crosses in the port. He is a Franco-British who lives in Switzerland, has had a llaüt in Port for decades and, after the controversial mandate of his antecessor, finishes this four-year period with a cum laude: the achievement of a new concession for another 35 years.

Today, as the new elections approach, he refuses to make any declarations about the possibility of running for them.

Has the renewal of the concession been very hard to achieve before the deadline, in July?

-It is not a renovation, but an entirely new concession. It was supposed to be renewed in July, but the Balearic law of Ports reduces the concession period to a maximum of 30 years, in accordance with the Spanish Coastal Law gave the possibility of a new concession if a project involving renovation works in the premises was presented. Adapting to this has been very complicated, since in the 80’s many preferential mooring rights were sold – some 225 among our members- for a 50 years-period that was suddenly reduced to 30.

You assumed the presidency of the Club in a very complicated moment.

The president Ferran Porto applied in 2007 for a new concession. In 2011, Ports-IB made an offer that implied the increase of the levy from 20.600

euros to 411.000 euros. A total disaster. By the end of 2012, the next president, Siquier, proposed to the assembly to reject this offer. But he didn’t tell the members that as a consequence, the concession would end in 2018. In that moment a group of members asked me to lead a vote of no confidence against him, but in the end, he resigned.

played by Sete Benavides is of great importance, since he is a role-model sportsman. In sailing, I am giving Pere Antoni Nadal a chance as sports manager. He loves it and he is taking it really seriously. I have promised him I will provide all the resources needed for improvement. A lot has been achieved in light sailing, in optimist class, in 420 class… When it comes to cruise sailing it gets more complicated because here we do not have many people interested in regattas. In El Arenal, as in many other ports, all members take part in regattas, but not here. We also have a fleet of flying fifteen; they are non Olympic, but a very charming sailing. I believe we are building our reputation around the Balearic Islands.

Then it was your turn…

Yes, that’s right. We had elections in august 2014.

I never dreamed I would become the President of this Club, specially considering that this was to be the hardest period in its history. I was elected by acclamation during a meeting that gathered more than 200 people, quite a lot.

Bur such popularity didn’t help the problems fade…

I knew the transmission of the moorings would represent a huge problem. They thought they had bought them for 50 years, but in the end, they would only have them until 2018… Another problem was that my managing team included a majority of members with preferential mooring rights (6 out of 11 members of the management were holders of preferential mooring rights) thus, they would be able to force the final decision. In the end, we presented an agreement for the approval of the assembly according to which they could continue for twenty more years if they paid five million of the seven due for investment, as last year I managed to obtain a new concession for another 35 years. I must admit that both Xavier Ramis, General Manager of Port-IB and Pedro Puigdengoles, administrator, were very helpful with the matter of the new concession. I am not saying this is the perfect outcome, but at least it is a solution. And even if it was refuted, the refutation was rejected, so in this moment the execution project is being prepared for the presentation to Ports-IB. Please, tell us about the main aspects.

This port was constructed in 1988/89 and during the last 30 years, the beams of the vessels have grown bigger, which leads to capacity problems since the moorings have not changed.

The moorings need to be made wider. We will use the space dedicated to vessels visiting in order to gain space for wider boats. A submarine inspection has also been made, so new columns will be built, the jetty will be made taller, the pipes will be renewed and the space available for building will be subject to reconsideration.

We will also have a larger parking. There are some 1400 members, but just 300-400 parking spots. That’s a mess during the summer season, if you think.

What about the Open Fishing Competition?

This year is the 25th anniversary of the competition of tuna fishing. The first time, it gathered 12 vessels: 3 were locals and 9 were French. This competition is in the core of the fishing industry.

You need a very fast boat. Ours is a catch-and-release fishing competition, in which we are pioneers. In fact, we are the first club in Spain to organize a competition that doesn’t involve the death of the fish. We have kept this conservationist mode for eleven years now.

No. After the last elections, the Govern del Pacte approved a moratorium period that forbids all sports marinas to grow. Time ago we applied for the approval of a project that meant a small growth, out of the seawall, that would have allowed us to have some 60 extra moorings, but it has not been approved.

Please, tell me about the sports projects.

We have the best trainer in canoeing in the entire country, Kiko Martín. This club has more cups in canoeing than any other one in Spain. The role

What is the atmosphere like in the club?

-We don’t organise many social events. I would have loved to, but it’s really difficult. You must take into consideration that 60% of our members don’t reside in the Balearics: 40% are Majorcans, 20% from other parts of Spain and 40% are foreigners, mainly British, but there are other nationalities. So, there not an enough large and stable number of members all year round in order to maintain a high level of social activity. It is really hard.

Will you run for reelection?

-I can only say…”no comments”. To be honest, I haven’t made up my mind yet. It will depend on what people want. We’ll see.

-The new president will have to face the works approved during your mandate.

-That’s true. It has also been decided, but it is not compulsory, to create an external and transparent control organism to ensure the execution of the works and budgets.

Can you tell us any recent anecdote?

-I was horrified when I discovered that one of the boats in our port was offered in the Internet for weekly rentals, as if it was a flat. We will not have to face this risk in the future, because from next year on, all moorings will be managed by the Club.

Un proyecto náutico para 35 años más el actual equipo, dirigido por el presidente alan ponte, se muestra entusiasmado por un exitoso mandato de cuatro años que finaliza con la consecución de la nueva concesión El Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença se prepara para un lifting importante: un plan de renovación de sus infraestructuras tras conseguir la concesión para 35 años más, o sea, para traspasar una fecha tan emblemática como el 2050. El equipo liderado por el presidente Alan Ponte termina su mandato dejando el legado más buscado: la nueva concesión. Con las elecciones a la vuelta de la esquina (25 de agosto), ante las que nadie se postula en el momento de escribir esta crónica, el icónico Club más septentrional de Baleares está preparado, por fin, para afrontar su gran proyecto del siglo XXI. Este año coinciden dos citas institucionales ineludibles e intensas, que llevarán al día a día del RCNPP una actividad inusitada: el comienzo de las obras del Proyecto de Adaptación del Puerto, o lo que es igual, la segunda renovación de infraestructuras más importante en los 57 años de vida del Club, y la nueva convocatoria de elecciones, que se prevén para finales del mes de agosto. Se presente la candidatura que se presente y gane la que gane, tendrá que asumir y centrarse en ejecutar dicho proyecto.

El actual equipo, dirigido por el presidente Alan Ponte, se muestra entusiasmado por un exitoso mandato de cuatro años que finaliza con la consecución de la nueva concesión para 35 años más y que empezó en 2014, tras rechazarse la propuesta de Ports-IB -básicamente por el alto coste del canon-, lo que conllevaba que la concesión terminara en julio de 2018. El temor a perder la gestión del puerto derivó en un malestar general hacia el entonces presidente, que terminaría por dimitir.

siete millones de euros, se pagará a escote entre el Club y los titulares con derecho de uso de los amarres, que son 225, en un periodo de seis años a partir de este significativo 2018, según decidió una muy concurrida Junta General Extraordinaria en agosto del año pasado.

La Junta también aprobó que el RCNPP asumiría el alquiler de los amarres pertenecientes a particulares a partir de enero de 2019, por lo que cobraría una comisión del 15% sobre la tarifa de amarre del Club. La entidad, por tanto, se fortalece institucional, estructural y económicamente, a la vez que despeja su futuro para ordenar su devenir con seguridad y estabilidad.

“Hemos sido siempre un Club pionero, pero la normativa de puertos de 2005, respetando la ley de Costas de 1988, recortaba nuestra concesión, con lo que en los últimos años no se hicieron inversiones relevantes porque no estaba claro el futuro. “Con este plan tendremos un Club nuevo y además solventamos las deficiencias que teníamos. Las obras se harán en tres fases para poder compatibilizarlas con el día a día”, aclara Dupuy.

Con el devenir de los tiempos, las exigencias de confortabilidad de los navegantes han ido derivando en embarcaciones con más manga, lo que implica barcos cada vez más anchos y, por tanto, mayor espacio en los amarres. El nuevo plan afronta esta necesidad dotando a todos los pantalanes de más manga, salvo el 2 por ser técnicamente imposible. De paso, el Club prevé instalar más torretas de abasteci-

miento, una para cada dos embarcaciones.

La primera fase, que irá de octubre de este año a mayo de 2019, prevé las actuaciones en la zona más cercana al edificio social, la zona medular más atractiva y socialmente expansiva de toda la infraestructura náutica para asueto de socios y visitantes: la renovación total del pantalán 1, la ampliación del dique exterior para ganar en espacio de aparcamiento y protección interior, la creación de un bar en la piscina y la mejora de la terraza del restaurante.

La segunda fase, entre octubre de 2019 y mayo de 2020, las obras se centrarán en la zona del faro del puerto, para crear una rotonda y acometer la renovación del muelle 2, los pantalanes 4 y 5.

La tercera fase (años 2020-2021) prevé construir un edificio nuevo para marinería, baños, cantina, escuela de vela y gimnasio; los dos actuales de marinería y baños se derriban. Además se renovarán los pantalanes 2 y 3.

After winning the concession for another 35 years the plan is to renovate the infrastructure in time for the symbolic year 2050. The club's leading team and its president Alan Ponte ends its mandate leaving the club with the most sought-after legacy imaginable: the new concession. Elections are just around the corner (the 25th of August) and no one is running as candidate at the time this chronicle is written. This iconic, northernmost Club on the Balearic Islands is finally getting ready to take on a great 21st-century project.

This year two necessary and very intense institutional happenings coincide, bringing unusual activities to the RCNPP. The Port's Adaptation Project will begin, the second largest infrastructure reform during the Club's 57 years, and elections have been convoked for the end of August. No matter who presents as candidate and no matter who wins, this project is something they will have to take on and manage.

The present team, lead by president Alan Ponte, is enthusiastic about their successful four-year mandate that they finished with the achievement of a new concession for another 35 years. Work on this began back in 2014 when the proposal from PortsIB was rejected, basically because of its high cost.

This meant the concession would come to an end in July 2018. Fear of losing port management led to general ill feelings aimed at the president at the time, who resigned in the end.

The cost of the approved project exceeds seven million euros and will be paid in proportional parts by the Club and owners with rights to use moorings, the latter numbering 225 individuals. It will be paid during a period of six years starting from 2018 according to a decision made at a very wellattended Extraordinary General Meeting in August last year. The Board also approved that the RCNPP would take over the mooring rentals to individual owners starting in January 2019, for which it would take a commission of 15% of the mooring rates for the Club. This step means the entity is strengthened institutionally, structurally and financially, and it also means the future is clear as far as security and stability is concerned.

The initial phase of the port adaptation involves a complete renovation of pier 1, gaining space for parking and internal protection, creating a bar by the pool and improving on the restaurant's terrace area "We have always been a pioneering Club, but the regulations for ports in 2005, respecting the Coastal Law of 1988, cut our concession. As a result no relevant investments have been made during recent years since the future was uncertain. Once that question was solved we could start on an update of the project”, says the Club's first vicepresident Mateo Dupuy with satisfaction.

“This plan will result in a brand new Club, and it will allow us to solve the deficiencies we had.

Work will be done in three phases so we can adjust them to the day-to-day running”, Dupuy clarifies.

Necessary work RCNPP will carry out work that is necessary for the facilities, above all related to safety, operability and convenience.

During the course of time demands for convenience among sailors have led to beamier boats, which means boats are becoming increasingly wider and as such taking up more space when moored. The new plan addresses this need, providing all the piers with more space, except from the number 2 where it is technically impossible.

As work progresses the Club is planning to install further supply turrets, one for every two boats.

The first phase will run from October this year to May 2019 and will involve several projects taking place in the area around the social building, the most attractive and socially expansive core area within the nautical infrastructure, both for members

and visitors. Pier 1 will be completely renovated, the outer dam will be expanded to win spaces for parking and internal protection, a bar will be built by the pool area and the restaurant's terrace area will be improved.

The second phase between October 2019 and May 2020 will involve work focusing on the area around the port's lighthouse to create a roundabout and to renovate Quay 2 as well as Piers 4 and 5.

The plans for the third phase (2020-2021) are to build a new building for sailors with bathrooms, canteen, sailing school and gym; the two current ones for sailors and bathrooms will be demolished.

Cormorán y Mortitx, regatas para disfrutar David Díez

Si hay dos regatas de crucero ineludibles para los socios del RCNPP son el Trofeo Cormorán y el Vinyes Mortitx. Son competiciones que organiza el club y que se disputan, como viene siendo habitual, el último fin de semana de agosto y el último de septiembre, respectivamente.

Los ganadores de la edición pasada fueron Miquel Ponsetí con el Mascarat IV del CN Ciutadella en Clase 1 y Joan Jofre con el Lampo Rosso del CN Colònia de Sant Pere en el torneo Vinyes Mortitx. En cuanto al torneo Cormorán, el vencedor fue Carlos Serra con el Lolita del CN Colònia de Sant Pere.

Algunos regatistas llevan toda la vida en el club y participan tanto del acto deportivo como del social.

Ambas son competiciones interclubes y atraen a participantes de la zona nordeste de Mallorca así como de Menorca. La oportunidad de compartir anécdotas y comentar lo que ha dado de sí la regata llega en el momento de llenar el estómago. El Vinyes Mortitx celebra la competición con los ya tradicionales fideos de llampuga, y el Cormorán une personas y cubiertos en torno al humo de una barbacoa.

En el punto en que difieren ambas carreras es en los campos de regatas ya que el Cormorán tiene un recorrido fijo: el sábado ida y vuelta a la isla de Alcanada, y el domingo un triángulo en la bahía. Y, por su parte, el Vinyes Mortitx siempre hace un recorrido barlovento sotavento.

Regatistas habituales El RCNPP cuenta con algunos habituales de estas dos regatas, como Marga Villalonga o Pere Antoni Borràs, dos de los regatistas que más tiempo llevan vinculados al RCNPP. De hecho, la raigambre de sus familias con la institución náutica pollencina se cuenta ya por generaciones, tres para ser más exactos. Cada uno ha vivido momentos especiales allí, Marga conoció a su marido Manel, que vino a Pollença a navegar desde Alcúdia, y Pere Antoni ha visto a sus mejores amigos celebrar sus bodas en el club. Los dos hijos de ella hacen piragüismo y los tres de él, vela ligera. Y si el tiempo y la salud lo permiten, ninguno de los dos se pierde una cita.

“Ahora vamos a disfrutar. De jóvenes sí que éramos más competitivos, pero hoy en día es más tranquilo. Preferimos disfrutar de la navegación antes que llevarnos un trofeo”, comenta Marga. Sin

embargo, para Pere Antoni las regatas del club no son días normales: “Ese día es especial. Para la Cormorán, si hay que estrenar velas o uniforme de la tripulación, ése es el momento”.

Según sus compañeros de regata “Mario no se pierde una”. Este madrileño que aprendió a navegar en el lago Sanabria de Zamora, lleva vinculado a esta entidad desde el año 1998. “El mero hecho de regatear es una satisfacción. Antes disfrutaba más del mar en otros sentidos: bañarme, pescar…, pero ahora estoy envenenado por la vela”, admite.

Joven-veterano con palmarés Si se les pregunta sobre quinielas, a qué regatista del club ven con más opciones de alzarse con la victoria del Vinyes Mortitx o del Cormorán, la respuesta es unánime: Amador Magraner. Este joven deportista, con tan solo 31 años ya es un veterano que cuenta con un amplio palmarés. Regatista especializado en los trayectos largos, ha ganado varias pruebas de altura, como la Ruta de la sal (Barcelona-Eivissa) o la Bahía de Pollença (Barcelona-Port de Pollença), y ha sido el ganador de la regata oceánica Gran Prix Atlántico (Cádiz-Santo Domingo).

Aun así, el vencedor de las liguillas de invierno y otoño del RCNPP no ve que tenga más opciones que otros deportistas: “Es verdad -dice- que somos los más regulares. Hacemos travesías largas como cruceros del Atlántico y tenemos muchas millas acumuladas, por eso sacamos mejores resultados, pero no me considero favorito”. En su profesión del día a día siempre lleva veleros. Es patrón de barcos clásicos. Recientemente ha cambiado su barco ganador “Carat”, por otro más pequeño y manejable con el que, asegura, podrá competir mejor en las regatas interclubes, el “American Girl”.

The two most important yacht races for members of RCNPP are the Cormorán Trophy and

Vinyes Mortitx. These competitions are organized by the Club and held on the last weekend of August and the last weekend of September, respectively.

The winners of the last edition were Miquel Ponsetí, with Mascarat IV of CN Ciutadella in Class 1, and Joan Jofre, with Lampo Rosso of the CN Colònia de Sant Pere in the Vinyes Mortitx tournament. As for the Cormorán tournament, the winner was Carlos Serra, with Lo-

lita of CN Colònia de Sant Pere.

Some of the competitors have been in the club all their lives and participate both in the sport and social events. Both of them are interclub competitions that attract participants from the Northeast of Mallorca as well as Menorca.

After the race, they all get together for lunch, share anecdotes and comment on the competition. For the Vinyes Mortitx trophy, the club organizes a traditional lunch consisting of “fi-

deos de llampuga”, while the Cormorán trophy gathers everybody around the smoke of a barbecue.

The difference between the two races is the race course. While the Cormorán race has a fixed course (on Saturday there is a return race to Alcalanda island, and on Sunday a triangle on the bay), the Vines Mortitx always has a windward to leeward course.

Usual racers The RCNPP has some usual racers in these two races, such as Marga Villalonga and Pere Antoni Borràs, two of the racers who have been longer in the RCNPP. In fact, three generations of their families have already belonged to the Club. Both of them have lived special moments there: Marga met her husband Manel, who came to Pollença to sail from Alcúdia, while Pere Antoni has attended the weddings of his best friends in the club. Her two children practice canoeing, while his two children practice dinghy sailing. Weather and health permitting, they never miss a competition. “Now we come to enjoy. When we were younger we were more competitive, but nowadays it is different. We prefer to enjoy sai-

a different way (swimming, fishing, etc.), but now I am addicted to sailing”, he admits.

If asked about the racer in the club with more possibilities to win the Vinyes Mortitx or the Cormorán, the answer is unanimous: Amador Magraner. This young athlete, only 31 years old, is already a veteran who has won many prizes. Recently he replaced his winner boat “Carat” with a smaller one, the “American Girl”, that, according to him, will allow him to compete better in the interclub races”.

De Joan y anne a cormorán Los más veteranos recordarán a Joan y Anne, que regentaban el antiguo restaurante del club. La hoy conocida como Cormorán, originalmente tuvo otro nombre, el de esta entrañable pareja. Pero igual que cogió fuerza, lentamente acabó cayendo en el olvido hasta que dejó de celebrarse. En 1989 llegaron unos regatistas de Madrid.

Retomaron la competición gracias a un reto: Ignacio Muñoz contra Luis Olaso, una vela de windsurf contra la de un barco. “Poco a poco se fueron añadiendo más embarcaciones de vela y al principio el rating era a ojo…, todo muy amateur”, recuerda Camilo Javier, uno de los primeros regatistas. Desde entonces barcos como Raixa, Xispa o Bardevel han forjado la historia del RCNPP. From Joan and Anne to Cormorán The most veterans will remember Joan and Anne, who used to run the old club restaurant. The original name of the race which is today known as Cormorán was the name of this awkward couple. However, even though at the beginning it became very popular, it was finally forgotten and stopped being held. In 1989 some racers from Madrid arrived and resumed the competition due to a challenge: Ignacio Muñoz versus Luis Olaso, a windsurf sail versus a boat sail. “Little by little more sailing boats joined… in the beginning everything was very amateur”, recalls Camilo Javier, one of the first racers. pizà: “es más importante que les guste el mar que las competiciones” pese a su juventud, lleva toda una vida dedicada al rcnpp. es el punto de unión entre los que aprenden a navegar y los que compiten D.D.

“Aprendí a navegar aquí a los 8 años. Me trajo mi abuelo a hacer un cursillo de vela, desde entonces no he parado”. Joan Andreu Pizà es coordinador de la escuela de vela del RCNPP desde hace un año aunque lleva vinculado al club toda su vida. “Amo mi pueblo, mi club y la bahía, que tiene mucho encanto y como es cerrada, si no hace muchísimo viento es navegable casi todos los días del año.” Pizà también es el encargado de organizar las regatas de vela crucero. “Todas tienen doble perfil, hay gente que va más en plan social y gente que va más en plan competitivo.”

Igual que le pasó a él, su deseo es que los alumnos de la escuela le cojan el gusto a la vela.

Según Pizà, la mejor edad para iniciarse en la navegación y las regatas son los 6 años. “La idea es empezar lo más pronto posible, que se adapten al mar, que le pierdan el miedo, y ya después de eso, depende un poco de cada niño. A los que el profesor ve que están preparados para participar en regatas lo hacen, los que no, esperan un poco más”. Pese a eso, para el coordinador

de la escuela de vela, lo que debe primar no es participar en muchos campeonatos, sino que disfruten del aprendizaje: “Le doy más importancia a la afición y que les guste el mar, navegar y que tengan una pasión, más que enfocarlos en las competiciones. Igual en un futuro serán muy felices con su velerito sin competir”. De las dos escuelas que hay, la de invierno está más orientada a las regatas y cuenta con 30 deportistas inscritos. En la de verano, por el contrario, pasa mucha más gente por el club, la mayoría extranjeros o de la península, unos 80 alumnos por cada curso que suelen ser semanales, aunque esta temporada se están planteando que sean quincenales.

De las competiciones organizadas en el RCNPP las más importantes de vela crucero son la Cormorán y la interclubes Vinyes Mortitx. En los torneos de otros clubes Pizà lamenta que habitualmente hay menos participación de la que le hubiera gustado, unos cinco o seis barcos de media por campeonato. Le gustaría que los regatistas lo viesen como la obligación de sacar la

vela a pasear. “Hice cuentas y con las regatas que hacemos nosotros, salen unos dos días al año a navegar. Un sábado por la tarde salir dos o tres horitas no debería costar tanto.”

La evolución de los clubes ha ido por dos caminos para Pizà: “Por un lado una apuesta por tener resultados en el ámbito competitivo, y por otro, hacer una inversión para tener veleritos en su puerto. Es como una voluntad de tener un flujo continuo, una apuesta de futuro”. Respecto a si los alumnos de hoy serán campeones de mañana, comenta que la clave del éxito es la perseverancia y la constancia: “Si tienes ganas de algo, seguramente lo vas a conseguir, te costará más o menos… porque hay un tanto por ciento de componente innato, pero hay mucha gente con dotación para algo, que no le pone ganas ni horas, y en cambio, habrá uno con menos aptitudes que gracias a la actitud, llegará más lejos”.

Eso sí, gran parte de la responsabilidad de que un niño siga o lo deje es de los padres. “Ellos deberían incentivar a sus hijos a que descubran este mundo tan bonito”.

“I started to sail when I was eight. My grandfather brought me here for a sailing course and I haven’t stopped sailing since then”. Joan Andreu Pizà became coordinator of the sailing school one year ago but has been a member of the club during his entire life. “I love my town, my club and the charming enclosed bay that allows us to sail all year round”. Pizà is the person in charge of the organization of regattas at the club. “These events always have two faces: some people sail for the pleasure of it while others are really competitive”.

He wants his students to learn to enjoy sailing just as he did. Pizà considers that 6 is the best age to start sailing and taking part in regattas.

“It is good to start as soon as possible in order to adapt to the sea and to get rid of their fears, once these two goals achieved, the final result will depend on each child.

“When a regatta approaches, the instructor decides who will take part in it and who should wait a little longer”. But for the coordinator of the sailing school, the main issue shouldn’t be the championships, but enjoying the learning process. “I value the passion, the enjoyment for the sea and sailing over the competitions”.

There are two couses, the one that takes place during the winter, is more focused on regattas and counts with 30 athletes. The summer school, on the contrary, has a variety of participants that tend to stay for shorter periods since the club receives the visit of tourists, most of which are from the mainland or from other countries. Some 80 students stay just for a week, the possibility of setting a minimum period of two weeks being at present under consideration.

against other clubs (five or six vessels, on average). He would like it was considered an obligation. “Once, I calculated that if we consider the regattas organized by our club, would mean sailing some two days a year. Sailing for some four hours on a Saturday afternoon should be that big a deal”.

The evolution of the clubs has followed, according to Pizà, two different paths: “On one hand, the effort is made to obtain good results in competitions and, on the other hand, it is considered an investment that leads to a higher presence of sailboats in the port. It implies bet-

ting on the future”. When asked about the future possibilities of the present students he remarks the importance of consistency and perseverance: If you desire something, you’ll probably obtain, it may take more or less effort on your side… because there is some percentage of innate qualities, but so many people are gifted for some activity and then don’t make the effort while others with less aptitude go far thanks to their attitude”. But to be honest, a great part of the decision to continue or quit has to do with the parents. “They should encourage their kids to come meet this beautiful world.”

Después de haber destacado por separado en Optimist, Juna y Caterina se unieron la temporada pasada para probar juntas el 420. ¿Balance?

Como no podía ser de otra manera: positivo. Se clasificaron para competir en el Campeonato de España de Gran Canaria del 26 al 31 de marzo pasado, pero lamentan no haberse posicionado en el grupo oro. La sincronización entre ambas es tan grande que muchas veces Juna comienza la frase y Caterina la acaba: “Lo que nos pasó fue que al no estar acostumbradas a las condiciones de Gran Canaria hicimos algunos fuera de línea,

lo que provocó descalificaciones y acabar en el grupo plata”.

Aunque sean gemelas y tengan la afición común de la vela, no siempre están de acuerdo en todo.

Por ejemplo, el año que viene empiezan Bachillerato, aunque Caterina hará el social y Juna el científico. “No sabemos qué estudiaremos más adelante pero sí más o menos qué nos gusta”, confirma Caterina.

Su esfuerzo, junto con el de su entrenador Lluís Collell, ha hecho posible que el mismo año en que debutaban en 420, consiguieran clasificarse a nivel nacional. “No habíamos ido nunca a nin-

gún campeonato de España fuera de las islas. Ha sido una experiencia donde hemos aprendido mucho”, se sincera Juna. Pese a que disfrutaron de la experiencia, admiten que cometieron un error de principiante en la categoría. “Las condiciones marítimas no eran a las que estamos acostumbradas. Fue más difícil porque en Canarias había mucho oleaje y nosotras aquí en la bahía de Pollença no tenemos tantas olas...”, admite Juna. “Podríamos haber obtenido mucho mejor resultado. Los fuera de línea nos provocaron que no estuviéramos tan adelante. La próxima temporada nuestro objetivo es acabar en grupo oro”, completa Caterina. Por eso, para evitar lo que les ocurrió en Gran Canaria, quieren probar en otros lugares de Mallorca: “Este verano iremos algunos días a entrenar a la bahía de Palma, porque tiene más oleaje que la de Pollença”, adelanta Caterina.

A finales de año están los clasificatorios tanto para la Copa como para el Campeonato de España. La temporada anterior no consiguieron acceder a la primera competición, pero en esta irán a por las dos. El problema de 2019 será la edad, ya que se medirán contra adversarios que serán incluso dos años mayores que ellas. Al cumplir en diciembre y por tanto tener ya los diecisiete, no podrán competir en sub-17 y lo tendrán que hacer en sub 19, donde, además de la diferencia de edad, el nivel es más alto.

Las gemelas aseguran no hacer un entrenamiento especial sino que siguen el mismo que sus compañeros en el RCNPP, que han podido alternar hasta ahora con sus estudios. A partir de esta temporada, sin embargo, creen que no será tan fácil: “Entrenamos 4 días a la semana. Hasta ahora lo hemos podido compaginar sin problemas porque quizá el nivel de la ESO no es tan exigente, pero puede ser que la cosa cambie en el Bachillerato”, teme Juna. De lo que sí están seguras es de que tanto su familia como sus amigos las seguirán apoyando y animando como hasta ahora.

“Our goal is to enter the golden group” cabanellas is the most popular name this year at rcnpp. The twin sisters Juna and caterina represented the club at the spanish championship 420 category under 17 D.D.

Having excelled individually in optimist, Juna and Caterina decided to go together for the 420 category. The result was more than positive. It couldn’t possibly be other way.

They qualified for the Spanish Championship in Gran Canaria, 26-31 March, but they regret not being in the golden group. The connection between them is so strong that Caterina finishes the sentence started by her sister: “Since we

were not used to the weather conditions in Gran Canaria, we made some mistakes that disqualified us and made us descend to the silver group”.

But even if they are twin sisters and share their passion for sailing, they don’t agree all the time.

For example, the coming school year they will begin their Bachillerato (secondary education), Caterina has chosen social sciences and Juna prefers sciences. “We are uncertain about our further studies, but we know our preferences”, says Caterina.

Their effort, together with that of their trainer, Lluís Collell, made them classify at a national level on the same year of their debut in 420 category. “We had never joined a national competition organised out of the Balearics. We have learnt a lot from this experience”, confesses Juna. Even if they had some experience, they recognize they made a learner error. “The sea conditions were adverse for us, since they were different to the one we are used to. There are many waves in the Canaries while here in Pollença there aren’t many…” admits Juna.

“We could have obtained much better results.

We ended in a bad position because we went out the lines. Our goal for the next season is to join the golden group”, says Caterina. So, in

order to avoid repeating the experience in the Canary Islands, they want to sail in different spots around Mallorca. “This summer, we will train every now and then in Palma Bay, that is more wavy than that of Pollença”, says Caterina.

The classifying tournaments for the Spanish Cup and the Spanish Championship will take place at the end of the year. Last season they couldn’t join the Cup but in the coming season, they will try to compete in both of them. In 2019 they encounter another difficulty: their age, since their competitors will be in advantage towards them of two years older. Their birthday is in December, so they cannot compete in under 17: they will have to join the under 19 group, which has a much higher competitive level.

The twin sisters don’t receive a special training, but the same as their fellow students at RCNPP, which they can combine with their studies. From this season on, however, they think it will be a bit harder: “We train four days a week. Until now, we have been able to combine this without difficulties, maybe because ESO (secondary compulsory education) is not very demanding, but this may change in Bachillerato, fears Juna.

The one thing they are certain of is that their family and friends will keep on supporting them just as they have always done.

El kitesurf llega al Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença. El último fin de semana de junio 2018 se celebró el I Trofeo Kitesurf RCNPP-Pura Vida. Una competición organizada junto al club de surf alcudienc que pone nombre a la regata. El evento contó con 28 regatistas. Todo un logro de asistencia para la primera organización de un evento de este deporte, según Albert Vadell, director técnico de vela del RCNPP. El gran protagonista de ambas jornadas fue el viento. O más bien, la ausencia de él. El sábado no soplaba muy fuerte y se desplazó toda la organización hasta Llenaire, lo que retrasó más de dos horas el inicio de la primera prueba Freestyle. Una vez allí, la competición se desarrolló con normalidad aunque todos los actos programados empezaron dos horas y media más tarde. El domingo soplaba algo de viento de componente norte y se pudo disputar una manga de Foil Race, aunque no hubo tiempo para más. Después del mediodía, el sol calentó más y sobre las 14:30h el viento térmico acabó matando al norte, haciendo imposible disputar la Twintip Race.

Los primeros clasificados del sábado en Freestyle fueron, en este orden, “Roby”, Daniel Sobrino y Bernadí Solivellas; en la categoría Strapless, Bernadí Solivellas fue el primero, seguido de Juliano Rodríguez, y Javier Palmer. El domingo, la regata

de Foil Race la ganó “Pepero”, Bernadí Solivellas y Lluís Miquel Horta fueron segundo y tercero respectivamente. Vadell destacó la calidad de los regatistas: “Sé de entrenadores del club expertos en otras velas que practican kitesurf ocasionalmente, que iban a competir el domingo, pero vieron las pruebas del sábado y prefirieron no hacerlo debido al nivel tan alto que había”. en otros lugares, especialmente en Race: “Muchos practican de forma amateur, pese a que iban muy bien y muy rápido, tuvimos que explicar cómo se tomaban las boyas. Fue novedoso para nosotros y para ellos”.

Tanto desde el RCNPP como desde Pura Vida esperan que este deporte cada vez tenga más seguidores que disfruten de la Bahía de Pollença.

Kitesurf lands at the RCNPP D.D.

Kitesurf has arrived at the Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença. The first Kitesurf cup – RCNPP-Pura Vida – was held on the last weekend of June 2018. The competition was organised in cooperation with the surf club in Alcudia, giving its name to the race. The event featured 28 participants, quite an achievement seeing how this was the first time they organised an event specifically for this sport, according to Albert Vadell, the technical director for RCNPP sailing.

The main protagonist of both days was the wind. Or rather, its absence. On the Saturday the wind wasn't very strong and the entire organisation had to be relocated to Llenaire. This means the start of the first Freestyle test was delayed by more than two hours. Once there the competition continued as planned, even if all the programmed events started two and a half hours late. On the Sunday there was some wind from the north and one Foil Race could be com-

First to qualify in Freestyle on the Saturday were, in this order: 'Roby', Daniel Sobrino and Bernadí Solivellas; in the Strapless category, Bernadí Solivellas was first, followed by Juliano Rodríguez and Javier Palmer. On the Sunday

Ha obtenido muy buena puntuación en las competiciones realizadas en los últimos meses haciendo podio en algunas de las más destacadas. Con tan solo 10 años, fue cuarto clasificado de su categoría en el Trofeo IX Grand Trophy Spar Ciudad de Cartagena, Murcia, evento en el cual coincidió con más de 100 regatistas de entre 8 y 14 años.

Capllonch fue bronce en el Campeonato de Baleares sub 11 de Optimist disputado en marzo de 2018 en el Club Nàutic Sant Antoni de Portmany, Eivissa, y repitió tercera posición en el Trofeu Inturotel en Portocolom. Un joven deportista que según su entrenador Bernat Torandell está haciendo “muy buen trabajo”.

The future of sailing in Pollença Young Xavier Capllonch has made a strong impression in the Under 11 Optimist category. His scores in competitions held these last months are very good and he reached the podium in some of the most important ones. He is only 10 years old, and came in fourth in his category at the Trophy IX Grand Trophy Spar in Cartagena, Murcia. More than 100 sailors between 8 and 14 years of age participated in the event.

Capllonch got the bronze medal in the Balearic Championship for under 11s in the Optimist category, held in March 2018 at the Club Náutic Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza. He also finished third in the Trofeu Inturotel in Portocolom. His coach Bernat Torandell says that this young athlete is doing “a very good job”.

“antes no había un club de competición, era recreo” La esperanza de la vela ligera del rcnpp para albert Vadell es formar un grupo sólido de niños, “eso crea club y masa crítica” D.D.

Hace poco más de un año que Albert Vadell llegó al RCNPP, pero se plantea objetivos ambiciosos para la vela ligera: “El año que viene podemos tener tres regatistas en Láser en campeonatos nacionales, a las hermanas Cabanellas en 420 clasificadas para el Campeonato de España y subir un poco el nivel de Optimist”. Albert Vadell, responsable deportivo de Vela, ha sido regatista preolímpico y llegó al club pollencí después de haber dirigido los de Can Pastilla y El Arenal.

Su filosofía es hacer las cosas sin prisa pero sin pausa. Empezó por ampliar los entrenamientos de dos a cuatro horas a la semana y, de mo-

mento, ya ha obtenido buenos resultados en el Campeonato de España. Aun así, el responsable deportivo de vela del RCNPP es consciente de que queda bastante camino por recorrer: “Sólo en el Arenal hay 60 regatistas de Optimist, nosotros tenemos 7 en nuestro club, estamos empezando de cero”.

Como en cualquier deporte, para tener regatistas que participen a un buen nivel, requiere en muchos casos, formación y años de práctica.

Para eso -según su opinión- lo mejor son las escuelas que inician a los alumnos desde pequeños para conseguir que se conviertan en campeones. Vadell cree que la clave es tener

una base sólida de alumnos en la escuela de vela. Pero también se necesita un cambio de percepción de la actividad: “Antes no había un club de competición, era de recreo. Es un trabajo lento porque es un deporte de mucha maduración”. Un cambio de actitud es importante: “Había y sigue habiendo en el club un problema de falta de confianza en sí mismos, pero estamos dándole la vuelta”.

Albert Vadell es optimista respecto a las nuevas generaciones de regatistas y las aspiraciones del RCNPP para la próxima temporada. Comenta que recientemente se acaban de apuntar seis niños a la escuela de vela y espera “que se

hagan amigos, hay que cuidarlos. Eso crea club y masa crítica. Es necesario tener niños de la misma ‘añada’, que es lo que hace grupo y unos por los otros incentivan la continuidad en el deporte”.

La escuela de verano es importante para la actividad del RCNPP pero no tiene utilidad a la hora de afianzar la cantera, porque hay mucho chico no residente, que se van: “Ahora estamos ampliando el número de regatistas incentivando la presencia de residentes”.

Para acabar, lanza un mensaje a los padres indecisos que se plantean apuntar a sus hijos a vela pero tienen dudas por temas económicos: “Hay la creencia de que la vela es cara, pero no es verdad, es como el fútbol, más o menos, pero con la ventaja de que el niño siempre es titular y participa todo el fin de semana”.

Albert Vadell, Sailing Sports Manager, has been a pre-Olympic sailor and arrived at the Club Pollensa after managing Can Pastilla and El Arenal Sailing Clubs.

His philosophy is to do things slowly but surely. He began by extending the training from two to four hours a week and, for now, he has already achieved good results in the Spanish Championship.

Nevertheless, the RCNPP Sailing Sports Manager is aware that there is still a long way to go: "Only in Arenal there are 60 Optimist sailors, we have 7 in our club, we are starting from scratch".

As in any sport, in order to have sailors who participate at a good level, it requires in many cases training and years of practice. For that (in his opinion), schools are the best option as they initiate students at an early age to get them to become champions. Vadell believes that the key is to have a solid base of students in the sailing school. But you also need a change of perception of the activity: "In the beginning the club was dedicated to recreational sailing, it didn’t compete”. It's a slow process because it's a very mature sport. "A change of attitude is important: "There was and still is a problem in the club of lack of self-confidence, but we are trying to change this".

Albert Vadell is optimistic about the new generations of sailors and the aspirations of the RCNPP for next season. He says that recently, six children have just enrolled in the sailing school and hopes "they become friends, they should be given atten-

tion. This builds the club and creates a firm basis.

It is necessary to have children of the same birth year, which is what strengthens the group and each one encourages the other giving continuity to the sport."

The summer school is important for the activity of the RCNPP but has no use when it comes to strengthening the reserve team, because there are many non-resident children, who at the end of the season leave: "We are now expanding the number of sailors encouraging the presence of residents."

To conclude, he sends a message to the indecisive parents who consider enrolling their children in sailing but have doubts due to economic issues: "There is a belief that sailing is expensive, but it’s not true, it's like football, more or less, but with the advantage that the child is guaranteed a starting place and participates all weekend."

Los palistas cierran una gran temporada con vistas a clasificarse para competir en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos. Tanto en el Campeonato de Europa como en Mundial han quedado a un suspiro de subir al podio en C2 200 metros, su distancia estrella. Estos datos les han motivado para prepararse para 2019, año en el que se decidirá qué deportistas se clasifican para Tokio’20. Su reto son los 1.000 metros, una distancia relativamente nueva para ellos, a la que se adaptan a gran ritmo y que será la única posible en los próximos Juegos. Benavides también ha recibido el Premio Nacional del Deporte por su papel en Río’16. Ambos esperan recordar 2019 como el año que se clasificaron para ir a Tokio.

Para empezar, ¿qué balance hacen de la temporada que ha acabado?

SB- En el Campeonato del Mundo nos quedamos con ganas de acabar en mejor posición, porque dábamos para más, pero tuvimos un problema después de ir segundos todo el rato y al final quedamos quintos. Luego hemos hecho toda la temporada preparando la distancia olímpica (1000 metros). Este año en los selectivos nacionales no nos ha ido del todo bien y hemos optado por tirar hacia la distancia de 500 y 200.

En el Europeo quedamos séptimos y cuartos respectivamente.

En algunas competiciones internacionales no han obtenido podio por cuestión de décimas.

TS- En 200 todos llegan muy juntos y al final el resultado se sabe por foto finish, porque a veces apenas se ve. Se han dado casos en que han quedado en empate y se han tenido que dar dos medallas a dos países diferentes con el mismo resultado.

Ya hablando de Tokio 2020. ¿Cómo es el proceso selectivo de unos Juegos?

SB-Hay que ganar en tu país, después salir de España y quedar entre los 7 primeros del Campeonato del Mundo de 2019. Es decir, es complicadísimo clasificarse. De hecho es más difícil clasificarse que ganar una medalla en los Juegos.

Pero bueno, no hay nada imposible. ¿Cómo ven el camino a Japón?

TS- Lo veo difícil porque quitaron los 200 metros, hay palistas muy buenos entrenando la distancia de 1000 metros y, al final, resulta muy complicado ganar. Pero bueno, seguiremos preparándonos. ¿Cómo se les da el kilómetro, que ahora es la única distancia olímpica en canoa masculina?

TS- Se nos da mejor el 200 que el 500. Internacionalmente hemos competido más veces en 200 pero bueno, también se nos da bien el 1000.

Hemos entrenado bastante para mejorarlo y este año sí que ha salido mejor que otros. Se nos hace cada vez más ameno.

SB- Es como el 1500 de atletismo. Si sales rápido no llegas a meta, si sales lento, los contrincantes se escapan…, es una distancia muy difícil porque hay que medir mucho las fuerzas.

El RCNPP ya es un referente en piragua, ¿cuánto tiempo llevan en él?

SB- Empecé a practicar piragüismo en verano del 2004 y llevo aquí toda la vida. Soy de este club y la verdad es que siempre nos ha puesto todas las facilidades del mundo para poder llegar a ser los mejores. Y de hecho se ha visto. Es un club que ha tenido tres olímpicos y tiene una cantera de piragüistas como Toni (Segura) y más chavales que vienen apretando fuerte y eso es lo que se tendría que ver más, yo creo.

TS- Yo llevaré unos 10 años… empecé cuando tenía 12 en un cursillo de verano. Kiko (Martín) me dijo si quería probar en el equipo de competición, si quería intentar con la canoa, y un día fui, me gustó y aquí he quedado hasta hoy. ¿Cómo compaginan la práctica del deporte con los estudios?

SB- Nos ponemos de acuerdo con Kiko Martín y solemos estudiar a distancia. Yo estudio en la UCAM de Murcia (INEF y Máster de Gestión de Entidades Deportivas). Puedo estudiar los días que no entreno por las tardes (martes, jueves y fines de semana).

TS- Se hace difícil pero intentamos llevarlo. No hay muchas ayudas para deportistas en los estudios porque según qué carreras no hay online. Por ejemplo, mi carrera, diseño industrial. Sí que intento hacerlo a distancia con la ayuda de algunos profesores pero otros no entienden mi problema. ¿Se puede vivir del piragüismo?

TS- Es muy difícil vivir de un deporte minoritario porque hay pocas ayudas, no hay pagos como en el fútbol. Yo estoy cobrando ayudas desde el Govern Balear hasta en Consejo Superior de Deportes pero son ayudas que te ganas tú por resultados.

SB- Yo sí que vivo del piragüismo ahora mismo. Si estás entre los 8 mejores del mundo, cobras becas, pero si no, tienes que buscarte la vida por tu cuenta e intentar ganar algo de dinero. Sólo un 1% puede vivir de ello, es lo malo de nuestro deporte. ¿Hasta qué edad puede competir un palista?

SB- El cuerpo aguanta lo que la mente le dé. Es así, la mente decidirá cuándo es mejor retirarse, pero mientras uno se sienta bien para poder prac-

ticar piragüismo, adelante.

TS- Una persona se puede mantener en la élite bastantes años. Por ejemplo, el campeón olímpico de Londres en K1 1000 ganó el oro con 35 años.

Puedes alargar bastante la carrera si tu físico lo permite y puedes aguantar a la gente joven que viene. ¿Dónde guardan los premios que consiguen?

SB-Los diplomas olímpicos los tengo en casa. Por desgracia mía, están en un armario porque no los he puesto todavía en ningún sitio, todavía estoy pensando dónde hacerlo. Los quiero colocar en algún sitio que merezca la pena. Aunque es igual que las medallas que las tengo escondidas en una bolsa. Cuando me retire del piragüismo puede que lo ponga todo bien visto.

TS- Yo no tengo tantas medallas pero las coloco en una mesa alta en mi habitación. Las tengo puestas en línea para cada vez que voy a entrenar, recordar los resultados que he conseguido, los momentos buenos del piragüismo…, para motivarme un poco porque hay días que hace falta (risas).

year where it will be decided which athletes qualify for Tokyo’20. Their challenge is the 1000 metres race, a distance which is relatively new to them. However they are adapting to it quickly, since this will be the only distance available in the next Olympic Games. Benavides has also been awarded with the National Sports Award for his performance in Río’16. They both hope to remember 2019 as the year when they qualified for Tokyo.

How do you take stock of the season that has just finished?

SB-In the World Championship we were not satisfied with our position because we could have done better, but we had a problem after being in the second position all the time and in the end we were fifth. Then we have prepared the Olympic distance (1000 metres) during the season.

This year we have not performed very well in the national selection competitions and we have decided to choose the 500 and 200 metres distances. In the European Championship we were seventh and fourth respectively.

How do you manage to combine sport and study?

SB-We reached an agreement with Kiko Martín and we chose e-learning. I study in the UCAM of Murcia (INEF and a Master in Sport Entities Management). I can study the days that I don’t train in the afternoons (Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends).

TS-It is hard but we try our best. Athletes do not usually receive help to study because some degrees can’t be taken online. For example, I study Industrial design. I try to study remotely with the help of some professors, but others don’t take my situation into consideration.

In some international competitions you have not been able to step up to the podium for only a few tenths of a second.

TS- In 200 metres everybody finishes very close together and in the end the winner has to be decided by photo finish, because sometimes visibility is scarce. There have been cases where there has been a draw and two gold medals have been awarded to two different countries with the same time.

Moving on to Tokyo 2020. How is the selection process for the Games?

SB- You have to win in your own country, then you have to compete outside and finish among the first seven in the World Championship 2019.

This means that it is very difficult to qualify. In fact, qualifying is more difficult than winning a medal in the Games. But nothing is impossible.

How do you see the road to Japan?

TS- I see it difficult because they removed the 200 metres, there are very good canoeists training the 1000 metre distance and in the end it is very hard to win. But we will keep on preparing.

How good are you at the kilometre race, which now is the only Olympic distance in male canoe?

TS- We are better at 200 than at 500. Outside Spain we have competed more often in 200, but we are also good at 1000. We have trained a lot to improve and this year the results have been better than ever. Each time we enjoy more and more.

SB-It is like 1500 in athletics. If you start fast, you don’t reach the finish line, the opponents break away… It’s a very hard distance because you have to test your strength carefully.

The RCNPP has become a model in canoeing. How long have you been in the club?

SB- I started canoeing in summer 2004 and have been here ever since. I belong to this club, where they have always facilitated us everything so we could become the best. And there is evidence of it. This club has had three Olympians and young canoeists like Toni (Segura) and more kids who are pushing hard. I think we should put the focus on that.

Is it possible to live on canoeing?

TS- It is very hard to make a living out of a minority sport because there is not many financial help. We don’t get paid like football players. I receive some financial help from the Government of the Balearic Islands and from the National Sports Council, but you must achieve very good results to access.

SB-Right now I am making a life out of canoeing.

If you are among the best eight in the world, you get scholarships; otherwise, you have to get by on your own and try to make some money. Only 1% can really live on this sport; that’s the bad thing about it.

Until what age can a canoeist compete?

SB-Your body follows your mind. That’s the way it is. Your mind will decide the best moment to quit. But as long as you feel good to practice canoeing, carry on with it!

TS- A person can stay in the elite for many years.

For example, the Olympic champion in London in K1 1000 won the gold at age 35. If your body responds and you can compete with younger canoeists, you can stretch out your career for many years.

Where do you keep the prizes that you win?

SB-I have my Olympic diplomas at home. Unfortunately they are still inside a cupboard because I haven’t placed them anywhere yet. I’d like to place them in a special place. As for the medals I also keep them inside a bag. I might put them all in order and display when I retire from canoeing.

TS- I don’t have so many medals, but I put them on a table in my bedroom. They are lined up so every day, before my training, I see them and remember my performances, the good moments in canoeing… This motivates me, because sometimes I really need it (laughs).

Un éxito de organización y medallero para el RCNPP Baleares, segunda clasificada en el campeonato nacional de fondo de Jóvenes promesas organizado por el rcnpp para infantil y cadete D.D.

El Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença arrasa en el Campeonato de España de Piragüismo de Jóvenes Promesas. Una competición que organizó la propia entidad después de una década en la que no se había realizado ninguna prueba estatal en Baleares. El club pollencí fue el que más medallas obtuvo en dicho campeonato, celebrado el 28 de abril de 2018. Un total de nueve fueron los metales conseguidos en las diversas categorías.

La prueba se realizó en el lago Esperanza, en el Port d’Alcúdia, y contó con más de 700 deportistas de un centenar de clubes de 15 comunidades autónomas. Por regiones, Baleares quedó la segunda (4.087 puntos); justo por detrás de Galicia (9.183 puntos); y fue Asturias quien completó el podio con la tercera posición (3.773 puntos). En lo que se refiere a entidades deportivas, el Aranjuez de Madrid (1928 puntos) lideró la clasificación, seguido por el Real Club Náutico de Palma (1.644 puntos) y el Grupo Cultura Covadonga de Asturias (1.609 puntos).

Por primera vez en la historia de este campeonato, se consiguió que tanto deportistas como equipo técnico y familiares se alojasen en el mismo hotel, en el Port d’Alcúdia. El establecimiento albergó a casi 2.500 personas y su ubicación, justo al lado del Lago Esperanza, facilitó el acceso al lugar de prueba. Los deportistas pollencins también durmieron y convivieron con sus compañeros de otros equipos y otras comunidades autónomas.

Según Kiko Martín, coordinador de Piragüismo del RCNPP, era importante que estuviesen alojados allí: “Nos jugábamos mucho. Es un campeonato de España y no podían estar en sus casas sin saber si descansaban o no. Tenían que estar concentrados para la competición.”

La organización del evento también fue pionera en crear un programa de actos sociales antes y después de la regata, que fueron desde una charla-coloquio con el deportista olímpico del club Sete Benavides, a una gran fiesta de clausura en las instalaciones del RCNPP, pasando por la celebración de un correfoc con dimonis, entre otras actividades.

Two successes for RCNPP: organization and medals.

The Balearic islands, in the second position at the championship of spain for young Talents, organized by the rcnpp D.D.

The Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença has swept the Spanish Championship of Canoeing for Young Talents. The competition, that took place on 28 April, was organized by the RCNPP after a decade without any national championship held in the Balearic Islands. The Club in Pollença was the one that obtained the bigger number of medals: up to nine in a variety of categories.

The competition took place at lake Esperanza, in Port d’Alcúdia, with the participation of more than 700 athletes from some hundred clubs from 15 Spanish regions. Baleares achieved the second position among the regions (4.087 points); just behind Galicia (9.183 points) and followed by Asturias, that was third in the ranking with 3.773 points.

Regarding the positions of the clubs, Aranjuez, form Madrid was leader with 1.928 points, followed by Real Club Náutico de Palma (1.644 points) and the Group Cultura Covadonga de Asturias (1.609 points) For the first time in the history of this championship, athletes, families and technical staff were guests of the same hotel, in Port d’Alcúdia. More than 2500 people shared its premises that, being situated close to Lake Esperanza, made access really easy. Athletes from Pollença had the chance to stay over and live together with their team mates and people from other regions. According to Kiko Martín, Canoeing Coordinator at RCNPP, it was important to have them all there: “We had a lot at stake. It was a national championship and we could not send them home and not be sure whether if they were resting or not. They needed to concentrate for the competition”.

The team responsible for the organisation was also a pioneer by proposing a programme of social events before and after the regatta, ranging from a talk followed by a discussion with the Olympic sportsman in the club, Sete Benavides, to a great closure party held at the premises of RCNPP, including a correfoc with dimonis, among others.

A mediados de marzo de 2018 se celebró en Sevilla el Campeonato de España de Fondo de Piragüismo. De los 1.900 asistentes, los 70 mejores barcos compitieron en la final de 5.000 metros en las categorías junior y senior. El palmarés del RCNPP ha sido: oro para Mary Jane Parry en categoría veterana (Campeona de España), plata para Francesc Martínez en sub 20 C1, plata en sub 17 y bronce en junior absoluta C1 para María del Mar Cerdà, bronce para Joan Antoni Moreno en junior C1, cuarto para Nicolás Sprimont en sub 17 C1, séptimo para Toni Segura en sub 23 C1, decimotercero para Toni Ramon Enseñat en junior C1, decimotercero para Rodrigo González en sub 23 C1 y decimocuarto para Margalida Crespí en K1.

The Long Distance Canoeing Championship of Spain took place in Seville in mid-March 2018. The best 70 vessels out of some 1900 participants competed in the 5000 m final for the junior and senior categories. “aspiramos a ganar el oro en los Juegos Olímpicos” esta temporada se han superado los éxitos deportivos de la anterior, según el coordinador de piragüismo del rcnpp D.D.

Hablar de piragüismo en Pollença es hablar de Kiko Martín. Es coordinador de este deporte en el RCNPP así como entrenador desde el 2004.

Y desde que empezó a competir su palmarés no ha dejado de crecer: dos Juegos Olímpicos, unos Europeos y varios Mundiales. En total 14 medallas en distancia olímpica a nivel mundial, la mayoría de las cuales pertenecen a Sete Benavides, uno de los deportistas que más metales ha conseguido en dicha distancia en la historia del piragüismo en España. El palista Toni Segura acompaña a Benavides en las competiciones C2.

Ambos, junto con Kiko Martín, forman un trío que ha logrado grandes hitos, como conseguir la primera medalla de oro ganada por un barco doble en la historia del piragüismo español, metal que consiguieron hace dos años en la Copa del Mundo en C2 200 metros. “El año pasado parecía difícil de superar, pero éste, lo estamos haciendo”, admite Martín con un punto de orgullo.

“Se acaba de ganar en Trasona, Avilés, el selectivo nacional para ir al Campeonato de Europa y

del Mundo, junior y sub-23 pero solo iremos al Mundial, en Plovdiv, Bulgaria, la última semana de julio, competiremos en distancia olímpica y no olímpica (C2 1000m ; C1 200m; C4 500m)”.

Pese a tener deportistas que compiten a un alto nivel, Martín le da mucha importancia a las bases, los que serán los atletas del futuro. De los 54 palistas de todas las categorías inscritos en el club, “donde más destacan es en categorías infantil y cadete, aunque también tienen buen nivel en junior y senior”. Una de las competiciones donde se pudo ver el alto nivel de los más pequeños fue en el campeonato de España de Jóvenes Promesas que organizó el RCNPP junto con la Federación de Piragüismo. “Nosotros fuimos el club que más medallas ganamos, obtuvimos 9”, comenta, para demostrar la importancia de los niños y niñas palistas. Para tener una buena cantera para competir es importante tener una escuela deportiva sólida. Actualmente cuentan con 15 alumnos apuntados de diferentes categorías, benjamines, prebenjamines, alevines…

“Somos un club que se ha especializado en

canoa. La hemos estudiado a fondo. Somos un referente mundial”. ¿Quién sabe si los que ahora dan sus primeras paladas competirán en los JJOO el día de mañana? Una ayuda importante para poder llegar a competiciones importantes son las becas ADO en distancia olímpica o las del Consejo Superior de Deportes en distancia no olímpica. Varios deportistas de alto nivel, entre los que se encuentran Benavides o Segura, cuentan con algunas de estas ayudas económicas, pero no es fácil solicitarlas. “Para ser Deportista de Alto Nivel (DAN) tienes que estar siempre entre los siete mejores del mundo”. Esta es la principal razón por la cual sus objetivos están tan claros respecto a sus palistas olímpicos: “Aspiramos al oro en los Juegos. Las dos veces que fuimos, quedamos cuartos. En Tokio 2020 lo volveremos a intentar”. ¿Cómo ve el futuro Kiko Martín? “No sé. Esto tiene un coste humano muy duro. No existe el reloj”, aunque después matiza, “de momento tenemos chicos para estar ahí arriba.”

“We hope to win the gold medal at the Olimpic games” according to the canoeing coordinator at rcnpp, this year’s successes will overcome those of the past year D.D.

It is impossible to talk about canoeing in Pollença without mentioning Kiko Martín, who has been training and coordinating this sport at RCNPP since 2004. His success record has steadily grown since he joined competition: twice at the Olimpic games, once at the European Games Competition and in several World Competitions. A total of 14 medals in Olimpic distance at a world scale, most of which were won by Sete Benavides, one of the sportsman having won the greatest number of medals in the history of canoeing in Spain.

The paddler Toni Segura participates in C2 competitions with Benavides. Both of them, together with Kiko Martín, make a successful trio, winner of the first gold medal for a double canoe in the history of canoeing in Spain. They achieved that first place two years ago, at the World Cup for the category C2 200mts. “Last year seemed hard to

overcome, but we’re doing it”, says Martín proudly. “We have just achieved a position for the European and World Championship junior and under-23-years categories at the national selection process in Trasona, Avilés. Nevertheless, we will only take part in the World Championship in Plodiv, Bulgaria, during the last week of July, competing in both Olympic and non-Olympic distance (C2 1000m, C1 200m, C4 500m)”.

Even if he works with sportsmen and women that compete at the highest level, Martín places great importance on the club’s younger squads, those who will become athletes in the future. There are some 54 paddlers in the club, and they “excel especially in the infant and cadet categories, even if they are quite good in the junior and senior categories, too”.

prove the high level of our youngest paddlers.

“Our Club obtained the greatest number of medals, a total of 9”, he says in order to show the importance given to paddler boys and girls. In order to have a pool of young paddlers, it is very important to count on a solid sports school. At this moment, there are 15 students in several categories: pre-benjamins, benjamins, alevins…

“We are a club specialized in canoeing, we have worked hard on it. We have achieved worldwide recognition”.

Those who start to practice today might one day compete at the Olympic Games… who knows?

An important support to help achieve important competitions are the ADO grants for Olympic distance or those from the Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) for non-Olympic distance.

Several high-level sportsmen, as Benavides or Segura, count on those financial helps but applying for them is not an easy process. “If you want to be considered a High Level Sportsman, you should always be among the top seven in the ranking”. This is the reason why his mind is so clear about the objectives for his Olympic paddlers “We aim for the gold at the Games. We were fourth in two occasions but in Tokyo 2020 we will try again”.

How does the future look like in Kiko Martín’s mind? “ I don’t know. This is a really demanding.

The clock does not exist” - but then he says - at present, we have the kids we need to be on top”.

Los pequeños tendrán su primer contacto con el mar, harán salidas en gamba y actividades relacionadas con la navegación D.D.

La escuela de verano del Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença responde a la demanda de los usuarios e incluye una categoría para los más pequeños. Los Draguts serán los niños de 3 a 5 años que se inician en el mundo náutico. Joan Andreu Pizà, coordinador de la escuela de vela, describe las actividades ofrecidas: “Los pequeños tendrán su primer contacto con el mar de dos formas: por un lado, harán algunas salidas en gamba y, por otro, la realización de actividades y manualidades relacionadas con el mar, como por ejemplo, hacer barquitos de corcho, dibujar una embarcación en una camiseta o realizar un taller de nudos”. De esta forma los más pequeños podrían adelantar su iniciación a los deportes náuticos en tres años.

Otra de las novedades es la escuela matinal de inglés. Cada día los jóvenes alumnos han podido practicar su deporte favorito en inglés. Sin necesidad de tomar apuntes, cada día de 8:30h a 10:00h, los chicos se meten en el agua para reali-

zar actividades náuticas guiados por un instructor nativo en la lengua de Shakespeare.

También se ha introducido el pádel surf en su oferta lectiva. Según el coordinador de piragüismo, Kiko Martín, el club llevaba tiempo con ganas de añadir este deporte que, afirma, estos últimos años ha estado y sigue estando en auge. Para eso se ha invertido en material. Se han adquirido 10 tablas y el mismo número de palas. La sección de piragua sigue contando con los kayaks en el verano, como se ha venido haciendo desde hace tiempo. Además, también se incrementará la plantilla de monitores, “dependiendo de la demanda que haya”, asegura Martín.

En vela también habrá un incremento de 4 instructores que se sumarán a los 5 habituales. A la escuela de vela de verano suele acudir más gente de fuera de Mallorca que de la isla. El porcentaje, según el RCNPP, es un 60% que viene de la península o el extranjero y un 40% que son del Port de Pollença, ya pueden ser padres que están en el

club y apuntan a sus hijos o simplemente vecinos del puerto. Pizà es optimista y espera que algunos de los que empiezan en verano continúen el resto de la temporada: “Respecto a los mallorquines que se apuntan, intentamos que la gente continúe con nosotros todo el año. Aun así, no se queda todo el mundo por dos razones: algunos prefieren practicar otros deportes como el fútbol, básquet o tenis; o bien porque piensan que en invierno, como hace frío, no se navega. Aunque eso no es cierto, se navega todo el año”.

De las 80 plazas ofertadas en todos los deportes, finalmente ha habido 54 inscritos. El club pollencí cuenta con 3 gambas, 10 láser picos, 10 optimist, 8 velas de windsurf y 2 RS Vision para poder abastecer a todos los alumnos que lo deseen, así como de los kayaks y tablas de SUP comentadas anteriormente. ¿Quién sabe si un niño o una niña que empieza ahora en la escuela de verano y se fideliza con el club en invierno, pueda ser el día de mañana un medallista olímpico?

The summer school at the Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença responds to user demand and includes a category for the youngest ones. The Draguts will be made up by children between 3 and 5 years of age, new to the world of sailing. Joan Andreu Pizá, the sailing school coordinator, describes the activities on offer: "The children get their first contact with the sea in two ways: one is going out in the 'Gamba' training boats, and one is participating in activities related to the sea, such as for example making cork boats, drawing a ship on a t-shirt, and learning how to tie different kinds of knots".

This way children can begin exploring the world of sailing as soon as they turn three.

Another novelty is the English morning school where the youngest participants are able to practise their favourite sport in another language. Without having to sit down and take notes, the kids get into the water every day between 8.30 and 10:00 am to practise water-related activities guided by an instructor whose mother tongue is that of Shakespeare.

Paddle surf has also been added to the lessons on offer. According to the canoeing coordinator, Kiko Martín, the club has been wanting to add this sport for a long time. He says it's a sport that has become very popular in recent years and continues to be so. Investments have been made in the form of 10 boards and the same number of paddles. The kayak section still offers kayaking in summer, as it has done for some time. The number of instructors will increase "according to demand", Martin assures.

The sailing section will be reinforced with another 4 instructors, added to the usual 5. The sailing summer school is usually made up by more people from outside Mallorca than from the island. According to RCNPP the percentage is normally 60% from the mainland or abroad, and 40% from Port de Pollença. The latter category largely consists of parents who are already members of the club and sign their children up, or people who live near the port. Pizà is optimistic and hopes that some of the summer participants will continue for the rest of the season: "As for Mallorcans who sign up, we try to convince people to stay with us for an entire year.

Not everyone sticks around, and it's normally for one of two reasons: either they prefer other sports, such as football, basketball or tennis, or they think it's too cold in winter and no one goes sailing. But it's not true. You can sail all year round.”

Animado XXV Open de pesca de altura este campeonato, el que más tradición tiene de las islas, fue pionero en la práctica de captura, marcaje y suelta en el Mediterráneo D.D.

El Open de Pesca de Altura de Baleares cumple un cuarto de siglo. Este campeonato, el que más tradición tiene de las islas, fue pionero en la práctica de captura, marcaje y suelta en el Mediterráneo.

Aunque hace 25 años que se celebra, sólo los 11 últimos han sido de pesca sin muerte. El primer fin de semana de julio, como viene siendo tradicional, se celebró la prueba organizada por el club pollencí con la colaboración de la Asociación Mallorquina de Pesca Recreativa Responsable y la Asociación de Usuarios del Port de Pollença.

Dos jornadas festivas, tanto el sábado como el domingo, donde más que una competición, se disputó, en palabras de la organización, un encuentro de pesca tranquilo: “Esto se debe a que cada vez

las tripulaciones están más sensibilizadas en la sostenibilidad de los recursos pesqueros y con un alto espíritu de compañerismo en la mar”. Los responsables del evento consideran que esto se debe al alto grado de concienciación de los pescadores que, o bien, ya habían participado en ediciones anteriores, o habían acudido previamente a otras actividades recreativas de tipo más conservacionista que competitivo. Este tipo de reuniones de pesca, además de la parte de ocio, también tienen una vertiente científica. Por un lado, se encargan de difundir la normativa de conservación de especies como el atún rojo o, la que está siendo su alternativa para muchos pescadores, la albacora. Por otro, mediante la liberación de las piezas marcadas, se pueden obtener datos reales e información nece-

saria para conocer el estado actual de la especie.

El ganador del open fue la embarcación ibicenca Mavida, seguida de Storm Angel, del Port de Pollença, y de la también ibicenca Aucala. El primer socio del RCNPP clasificado fue el Leocadia, cuyo tripulante, Toni Cabanellas, también se llevó el premio infantil. El de a la mejor fotografía fue para la serie de atún rojo realizada por Juan Saurina, del Aucala. En el mismo acto, se quiso agradecer, con la entrega de un trofeo, la colaboración en estos 25 años de Andreu Company, gerente del RCNPP; Esteban Graupera, delegado IGFA y coordinador del open; Bernadí Alba, presidente de la Asociación Mallorquina de Pesca Recreativa Responsable; Juan Cifre, capitán del puerto del RCNPP; “Huber”, encargado de la intendencia del open; y

La competición, que se desarrolló en las 60 millas alrededor de Formentor, contó con voluntarios-tutores por parte de la organización, uno por cada barco. Su función era aconsejar y dar fe de las buenas prácticas a bordo en todas las fases de la pesca de los ejemplares. Para garantizar que el proceso se llevase a cabo de la forma más adecuada, la organización también puso a disposición de las tripulaciones “cunas de marcaje” y “sacaderas”, que ayudaron en la tarea de los voluntarios.

El tiempo acompañó con un excelente estado de la mar y gracias al Tuna Finder se pudieron obtener buenas zonas donde echar el anzuelo. La flota, como ya es tradicional, se dividió en dos grupos, uno en el canal de Menorca y el otro al norte del cabo Formentor. De los dos grupos, en el primero destacaron las capturas de albacoras, y en el segundo, las de atunes rojos.

En ambas jornadas se pudieron ver delfines, agujas y tortugas que acompañaron a los participantes en sus travesías en busca de los túnidos e hicieron la actividad más amena.

La organización del XXV Open de pesca de altura de Baleares desea que esta competición “con su futuro comité organizador mantenga su histórica trayectoria, adelantándose a los acontecimientos y marcando el camino a los concursos de pesca de altura del Mediterráneo”.

Even if the tradition goes back 25 years, only the last 11 have involved fishing without killing. Test were held on the first weekend of July, as tradition has it, organised by the club in Pollença in cooperation with the Mallorcan Association for Responsible Fishing and the Association for Users of the Port of Pollença.

The event involved two days of festivities – the Saturday and the Sunday – and it was more than a competition being held. The organisation behind it stated that it was a nice and tranquil fishing event: "This is because the crews are becoming more and more aware of the sustainability issue affecting fishing resources, combined with a high spirit of companionship at sea". Those in charge of the event think this has to do with a high level of awareness amongst the fishermen who have either participated in previous editions of the event, or have participated in other recreational activities of a more conservationist than competitive nature. This kind of fishing meet-up is a leisure event, but it also has a scientific aspect to it. On the one hand the idea is to spread the rules of conservation for species such as the bluefin tuna and the albacore, the latter a tuna alternative for many fishermen. On the one hand the release of tagged specimens means it is possible to gain real data and information necessary to calculate the current status of the species.

The winner of the Open was the Ibizan boat crew on the Mavida, followed by the Storm Angel from the Port of Pollença and another crew from Ibiza on the Aucala. The first RCNPP member to qualify was the Leocadia, whose crew member Toni Cabanellas also won the children's prize. The prize for best photo of the bluefin tuna was won by Juan Saurina from the Aucala. A trophy was also awarded as a way of saying thank you for being part of these first 25 years to Andreu Company, manager of the RCNPP; Esteban Graupera, IGFA delegate and coordinator for the Open; Bernadí Alba, president of

the Mallorcan Association for Responsible Recreational Fishing; Juan Cifre, the RCNPP port captain; "Huber", responsible for the administration of the Open; and José Luis Carsi, president of the Association for Port Users.

The competition took place around Formentor's 60 miles of coastline and volunteers-trainers from the organisation participated, one for each vessel.

Their job was to give advice and observe good practice onboard for all phases when fishing for the specimens. To make sure the process would run smoothly and appropriately the organisation had given all crew 'marking wedges' and 'landing nets', which helped the volunteers in their task.

The weather was also onboard during the event and the sea was in excellent conditions. Thanks to the Tuna Finder participants found good spots to throw their hooks. As has become tradition the fleet was divided into two groups. One went into the Menorcan channel and the other went to the north of Cape Formentor. Of the two groups, the first got a good catch of albacore and the second more bluefin tuna.

During both days dolphins, garfish and turtles could be seen. They followed the participants on their journeys in search of tuna and made the activity even more enjoyable.

The organisation of the XXV Balearic Deep Sea Fishing Open hopes that the competition's "future organising committee keeps its historical path, keeping ahead of scientific findings and opening up new paths for deep-sea fishing in the Mediterranean Sea”.

El RCNPP tiene pocas embarcaciones dedicadas a la pesca que salgan a participar en competiciones, “pero si se hace algo de tipo medioambiental y se muestran fotos con los atunes la gente participa más. Es por eso que la mayor parte de los concursantes al Open de Baleares de Pesca de Altura vienen de fuera del Port de Pollença, de Baleares y de la península”.

La primera edición de la competición sin muerte en 2007 fue consecuencia de la recomendación internacional de protección del atún rojo el año anterior 2006. “Como el programa de recuperación terminó, y solo ha beneficiado a la flota profesional esta historia ya no tiene sentido. Lo tuvo que el club se involucrara cuando entidades conservacionistas, ayuntamientos, ONGs, Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, Govern y Consell estaban de lleno en la conservación, pero ahora no es el caso”.

Graupera lamenta que el interés de las instituciones por proteger la especie ha decrecido en los últimos años, ya no interesa mediáticamente, el atún rojo ha sido sustituido como símbolo marino medioambiental por otras especies. Gracias a que la especie empieza a recuperarse, el control internacional de las capturas cada año va dando más cuotas de capturas y actualmente estamos como en 2007, es por eso que estos dos últimos años “desde que cambió la exigencia del control, autorizamos a los participantes a que se lleven algún pescado a casa”, apunta.

Los días 7 y 8 de julio se ha celebrado el XXV aniversario del Open de Pesca de Altura de Baleares. Esteban Graupera, responsable de pesca del RCNPP, se enorgullece de confirmar que el club pollencí fue el primero del país en devolver los peces vivos al mar: “Los primeros campeonatos de captura, marcado y suelta que se hicieron en España fueron aquí, en el Port de Pollença.

Trolling fishing holds different attractions that vary with individual interests: “The captain is satisfied when the tuna is found, which is not easy and everyone has their own tricks: birds, currents, wind... And for fishermen the excitement lies in fighting to capture a creature weighing in at between 6 and 80 kilos with a rod, and the entire crew is happy when a specimen is released alive back into the sea”.

The RCNPP has few vessels dedicated to fishing that participate in competitions, "but if it has to do with the environment and involves photos of tuna, more people will participate. This is why the majority of those participating in the Balearic Open for Deep Sea Fishing comes from outside of Pollença, from the Balearics and the Spanish peninsula".

Graupera regrets that the interest shown by institutions to protect the species has decreased in recent years. It is no longer mentioned in media and the bluefin tuna has been replaced as a marine environmental symbol by other species. As the species start to recover, international catchment control awards higher catchment quotas and at the moment we are at the same level as in 2007 and the control requirements have changed during the last couple of years, which is why we now authorise participants to take some fish home.” he says.

La náutica deportiva antes del Club Náutico · Pere Salas Vives y Juan M. Torres Velasco · La primera noticia sobre una regata en el Port de Pollença corresponde al mes de agosto de 1911, lo que no quiere decir que no hubiera anteriormente. Aquel año, con motivo de las fiestas de la Patrona, tal como destaca el periódico El Pollensín, tuvieron lugar “grandes regatas de faluchos, a remo, cucañas marítimas, carreras de hombres a pie y de bicicleta”. El mismo año, durante las fiestas de la Virgen de los Peligros también se celebraron cucañas marineras y regatas en la tarde del domingo 6 de agosto. Por tanto, en aquellos momentos ya existía una cierta predisposición a la navegación recreativa y protodeportiva en Pollença.

Con la constitución de las "Abejas de la Playa" en 1912, luego reconvertida en el Pósito de Pescadores, se creaba una primera asociación de ayuda mutua que desde el principio impulsó regatas y actividades similares, especialmente durante las fiestas del Port en honor a San Pedro o en las del mes de agosto, como sucedió en 1917.

Pero en esta época el Port de Pollença no solo destacaba por la actividad pesquera sino también

por ser un lugar pionero en el nacimiento del turismo en las Islas Baleares. Lógicamente, la llegada de población en busca de ocio y actividades recreativas, daría un nuevo impulso a los deportes náuticos en el municipio. Hoteleros y autoridades locales no dudaron en potenciarlos, ya fuera para dar a conocer Pollença en los mercados exteriores como para ofrecer una actividad complementaria más. Por ejemplo, con motivo de la llegada del I Crucero-Regata del Litoral de Mallorca organizado por la sección de natación del Club de Regatas de Palma en julio de 1931, se organizó el día 25 una carrera de natación de 50 metros de distancia, un partido de waterpolo y saltos de palanca. El día siguiente se llevó a cabo una gran travesía en el Port y se repitieron las competiciones de waterpolo y saltos. Los ganadores obtuvieron trofeos donados por los hoteles de la localidad, que también organizaron una serie de verbenas la noche de día 25 en honor de los regatistas. Por supuesto, con este tipo de actividades salía beneficiado todo el ambiente turístico y cosmopolita del Port, suponiendo

un atractivo más para el, cada vez mayor, número de visitantes.

Durante la Segunda República una nueva entidad del Puerto se añadió a las citadas anteriormente en la organización de actividades festivas. Se trata del Club Recreativo y Deportivo Mar y Tierra. Esta entidad, en 1932, conjuntamente con los hoteleros, puso en marcha un ambicioso programa durante el mes de agosto, del que se hizo eco la prensa de Palma y donde, una vez más, destacan las competiciones en el mar. Los actos comenzaron día 13 con el lanzamiento de cohetes a las 9 de la noche seguido de una verbena. La mañana del día 10 se tocó la Alborada con gaitas y, después de las carreras pedestres, se organizó una "gran regata a vela". Por la tarde otra vez carreras y corrida de toros para acabar con otra verbena. El día 15 las actividades volvieron a la mar con un partido de waterpolo, deporte que, por lo visto, estaba en auge en esta parte de Mallorca. Al atardecer, ciclismo hasta Formentor y otra regata, pero esta vez a remo con premios. La fiesta acabó a las 12 de la

noche con un castillo de fuegos artificiales.

Como era de esperar la alegría y la libertad con que se vivía durante la primera mitad de los años treinta acabaron bruscamente a raíz del estallido de la Guerra Civil. Pero una vez terminado el conflicto se volvieron a retomar, más pronto de lo que se podría pensar, las actividades recreativas en la bahía de Pollença. Eso sí, sin la fastuosidad de los años anteriores debido a la crisis económica y de la Segunda Guerra Mundial que hizo desaparecer temporalmente el turismo de la zona.

Ahora fue la nueva Parroquia del Port de Pollença creada en 1938 y la Base militar de hidroaviones, las entidades que impulsaron las competiciones náuticas. Así, en las primeras fiestas patronales propiamente dichas celebradas en 1941, no faltó, entre otras celebraciones, un festival deportivo en el aeródromo militar el 16 de julio. Este consistió en regatas de 4 y 2 remos así como individuales. Es de destacar que este mismo año se creó una flotilla de Snipes en Pollença para competir en el litoral español. En el transcurso de las diversas competiciones, destacó la tripulación formada por el timonel Celestino Ramos, comandante de la Base, y el proel Salvador Cerdà March, que llegaron a ganar en Málaga en 1945.

"nacional" de la clase Snipe, entre los días 6 y 9 de julio. Evidentemente, en aquellos momentos no se trataba de un deporte de masas. No por ello dejó de ser importante para el Puerto, especialmente por el impacto económico que supuso la construcción de las embarcaciones, en unos momentos de gran penuria y miseria en toda Europa. De hecho, los organizadores del campeonato mundial de esta clase celebrado en 1948 en la bahía de Palma encargaron todas las embarcaciones -excepto las velas- al pollensín Antoni Cabanelles, Torrer.

El milagro europeo y la apertura del régimen franquista a finales de los cincuenta supusieron una nueva etapa de crecimiento económico asociada a la reanudación de la industria turística. Los deportes náuticos podían resultar, otra vez, un atractivo más para los potenciales visitantes, al tiempo que cada vez más pollensines se adentraban en su práctica. No es extraño que el 18 de junio de 1955 se inaugurase el Club Náutico en Formentor, el Naugolequi (náutica, golf, equitación), el primero de su clase, aunque prácticamente no llegara a funcionar. La popularidad de los deportes en el mar también se puso de manifiesto con en la inauguración del Círculo Cultural el 15 de agosto de 1958, cuando se organizaron compe-

ticiones de natación y regatas.

Todo confluía para que en 1959 se realizaran las primeras reuniones preparatorias para la fundación del Club Náutico del Puerto de Pollença en el hotel Miramar, que se materializaría en 1961. Con esta institución la práctica de la náutica entraría en una nueva fase de desarrollo de la que aún somos sus herederos. Pero esta es otra historia.

During the Second Republic a new entity of the Port was added to those previously mentioned in the organization of festive activities; the Club Recreativo y Deportivo Mar y Tierra. This entity, in 1932, together with the hoteliers, launched an ambitious program during the month of August, which appeared in the press of Palma and where, once again, the competitions at sea stand out. The events began on the 13th with the shooting of firework rockets at 9 o'clock at

location in the birth of tourism in the Balearic Islands. Naturally, the arrival of population in search of leisure and recreational activities gave a fresh impetus to water sports in the municipality.

Hoteliers and local authorities did not hesitate to promote them, in order to publicise Pollença in foreign markets and to offer an additional activity. For instance, on the occasion of the arrival of the I Crucero-Regata del Litoral de Mallorca (Cruise-Regatta off the coast of Mallorca), the Club de Regatas de Palma swimming section organized on the 25 July 1931, a 50 m swimming race, a water polo match and high dives.

The following day, a great open water harbour swim took place and the water polo and high dive competitions were repeated. Winners were given trophies donated by local hotels, which also organized a series of festivals in honour of the sailors on the night of the 25th. Naturally, with such activities the whole touristic and cos-

night followed by an open-air dance. On the morning of the 10th the Alborada (dawn chorus) was played with bagpipes and, after the walking races, a "great sailing regatta" was organized. In the afternoon, more races and bullfighting and to finish, another open-air dance.

On the 15th, the activities returned to the sea with a water polo match, a sport that, apparently, was booming in this part of Mallorca. At sunset, cycling to Formentor and another regatta, but this time, it was a rowing race with prizes. The event ended at 12 o'clock at night with a fireworks display.

As expected, the joy and freedom with which one lived during the first half of the thirties ended abruptly following the outbreak of the Civil War. Once the conflict was over, and sooner than expected, recreational activities in the Bay of Pollença were resumed. However, without the lavishness of previous years due to the

economic crisis and the Second World War, which made tourism temporarily disappear in the area. This time, the new Parish of the Port of Pollença, created in 1938, and the Military Seaplanes Base, were the entities that promoted the sailing competitions. Thus, in the first proper festivities held in 1941, there was, among other celebrations, a sports festival at the military aerodrome on July 16. Regattas of 4 and 2 rowers, as well as individual regattas took place.

It is worth noting that a flotilla of Snipes was created in Pollença that year in order to compete on Spanish waters. Through the various competitions, the crew that stood out was the one formed by helmsman Celestino Ramos, Commander of the Base, and bowman Salvador Cerdà March, winners in Malaga in 1945. In addition, the Base organized in 1950 a "national" Snipe regatta, between the 6th and 9th of July. Obviously, at that time it was not a mass sport. Nevertheless, it was important for the Port, especially due to the economic impact produced by shipbuilding, at a time of great hardship and misery throughout Europe. In fact, the organizers of the Snipe World Championship held in 1948 in the bay of Palma, commissioned all the vessels -except the sails- to a local, Antoni Cabanelles Torrer.

The European miracle and the opening of the Franco regime at the end of the fifties lead to a new stage of economic growth associated with the resumption of the tourist industry. Water sports could be, once again, an attraction for potential visitors, and at the same time more locals were starting to sail. Not surprisingly, on June 18, 1955, the Sailing Club in Formentor, Naugolequi (sailing, golf, horse riding) was officially opened. It was the first of its kind, although it hardly became operative. The popularity of water sports also became clear at the official opening of the Círculo Cultural on August 15, 1958, when swimming competitions and regattas were organized.

Everything came together, and in 1959 at the Miramar hotel, the first preparatory meetings for the foundation of the Club Náutico del Puerto de Pollença were held, and in 1961 it became a reality. With this institution, sailing would enter a new phase of development of which we are still its heirs. But this is another story.

l Festival de Música Clásica Agosto se viste de gala para acoger uno de los eventos de Mallorca más significativos a nivel internacional. Se trata del Festival de Música Clásica de Pollença, un certamen que empezó en el año 1962 y que hoy en día es un referente mundial.

Este año, el Claustro de Santo Domingo vuelve a inundarse de talento. En él se reúnen artistas de la talla del contratenor Carlos Mena y del director Andoni Mercero, en un concierto ofrecido por la Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, día 4 de agosto.

La segunda muestra corre de la mano del popular dúo Igudesman&Joo y se celebra día 11 del mismo mes. El aclamado Vogler Quartett también forma parte de esta especial cita y, el día 15, ofrece una vela única con la mezzosoprano Zandra McMaster y Pascual Martínez Forteza en el clarinete.

Una de las guindas del pastel es Diabolus in Música con su espectáculo Operámida que se celebra día 18 de agosto. Dos días después, Aurora, una de las orquestas de cámara más importantes de Europa, ofrece un concierto único bajo la dirección de Nicholas Collon y con Imogen Cooper al piano.

La penúltima actuación es día 25 de agosto con la música del guitarrista Ricardo Gallén y termina

día 29 de agosto con la banda The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra&Choir, dirigida por Ton Koopman y con la soprano Yetzabel Arias, el contratenor Maarten Engeltjes, el tenor Tilman Lichdi y el bajo Klaus Mertens.

Desde finales de junio hasta día 16 de julio el Puerto de Pollença rinde homenaje a Sant Pere, patrón de los pescadores y a la virgen del Carmen. Las fiestas empiezan con encuentros de xeremiers, conciertos de música, bailes populares y una feria marinera. El día del Carmen se hace un recorrido en barca por la bahía de Pollença y se celebran una serie de actos religiosos, culturales y cívicos.

l Feria del vino Es durante la primavera cuando Pollença acoge uno de los mercados extraordinarios más característicos de esta zona: la feria del vino. Se trata de una muestra que expone una gran colección de vinos autóctonos y que actualmente se ha convertido en un atractivo turístico de primer orden.

l El Pi de “Sant Antoni” Día 17 de enero los municipios de Mallorca celebran la popular fiesta de Sant Antoni, pero en Pollença el plato fuerte de esta ceremonia es el Pi de Ternelles. Residentes y visitantes se desplazan hasta la posesión de Ternelles con la intención de cortar un pino de grandes dimensiones -normalmente entre 20 y 24 metros de alto-. Lo trasladan a la plaza vieja del municipio, lo enjabonan y lo colocan en posición vertical con la intención de subir por el tronco y coger el confetti que está colocado en la cima. Quien lo consigue es el ganador.

l La Patrona La fiesta mayor de Pollença por excelencia es la de la Patrona. El día 2 de agosto los pollensines salen a la calle para conmemorar a la Virgen de los Ángeles y lo hacen con la tradicional Alborada y el baile de cossiers. El broche de oro es el simulacro de moros y cristianos, en el que residentes del pueblo interpretan la batalla entre el héroe Joan Mas y los valientes pollensines, que se enfrentaron a las tropas corsarias de Dragut que atacaron el municipio día 31 de mayo del año 1550.

Una de las citas ineludibles del verano mallorquín es Formentor Sunset Classics, celebrado en el icónico Hotel Formentor. Se trata de un festival que inunda de música el privilegiado entorno de esta bahía y que este año celebra su IV edición.

En él se reúnen figuras de renombre internacional, como por ejemplo la violinista Leticia Moreno, quién arrancó con el festival el 26 de mayo. En julio, Juan Pérez Floristán, uno de los pianistas jóvenes más relevantes del panorama español y europeo, también ofrece un recital de cámara con el Trío Vi-

brArt. En agosto Isabel Villanueva y François Dumont suben al escenario para cerrar el Ciclo de Cámara con un programa dedicado al romanticismo francés, así como al repertorio iberoamericano.

Forman parte de este evento único la mayor soprano del siglo XII, Anna Netrebko, en una gala de ópera junto a Yusif Eyvazov (día 1 de septiembre).

The Patron Saint’s Festival is by far the top event in Pollença. On 2 August, the pollencins (inhabitants of Pollença) take the streets to honour their Virgen de los Ángeles, and they do it by means of the traditional Alborada and cossiers dance. The highpoint is the fake fight between Moors and Christians, during which the residents represent the fight held between the hero Joan Mas and the brave pollencins who faced Dragut’s corsair troops attacking the village on 31 May 1550.

l Sant Antoni’s Pine Tree Saint Anthony’s Festival is somehow celebrated in all municipalities around Mallorca. In Pollença, the ceremony of the pine is the main attraction. Inhabitants and visitors walk to the land Finca de Ternelles in the search for a quite tall pine tree – usually from 20 to 24 meters tallthat should be cut and moved to the old square where it is covered in soap and put upright. The contestants should try to climb it and pick up the confetti situated on top. The first to reach becomes winner.

The month of August dresses up to host one of the most relevant international events in Mallorca: the Classical Music Festival, that started in 1962 and is nowadays a world reference.

This year, the Cloisters of Santo Domingo will become again the meeting point for first figures of music. There, artists as relevant as the countertenor Carlos Mena and the orchestra conductor Andoni Mercero will work together at the concert offered by Orchestra Barroca, from Seville, on 4 August.

The second event arrives thanks to the popular duo Igudesman&Joo and will take place on 11 August. The well-known Vogler Quartett is also a part of this special evening and will offer a unique performance with the mezzosoprano Zandra McMaster and the clarinet player Pascual Martínez Forteza.

On August 18, the show Operámida, fromDiabolus in Música, will be one of the icings on the cake. Two days later, one of the most relevant chamber orchestras in Europe will offer a concert conducted by Nicholas Collon and the pianist Imogen Cooper.

The guitar player Ricardo Gallén will perform in the penultimate place and last will be The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, conducted

l Wine Fair Pollença hosts in Spring one of the most extraordinary markets of the area: the Wine Fair.

The event shows a wide variety of local wines and has become a major touristic event.

l Sant Pere and Virgen del Carmen From the end of June until 16 July, Port de Pollença honours Saint Peter, Patron Saint of fishermen, and Virgen del Carmen. The festivals start with xeremiers (local type of pipes) performances , concerts, popular dances and a coastal fair. On Carmen’s day a vessel parade is organized along the bay of Pollença and several religious, cultural and civil events take place.

Los casi 152 kilómetros cuadrados que pertenecen al término municipal de Pollença poseen candidaturas a “lo mejor de Mallorca” en todas las facetas: paisaje, historia, cultura, playas, montañas, oferta turística, saber hacer y estilo de vida.

Pueblo y puerto están separados por apenas 6 kilómetros, pero son dos corazones que palpitan a ritmos muy distintos. El pueblo, enclavado ya en el origen de la Serra de Tramuntana en su cara norte, vive discretamente y guarda con celo sus secretos.

El ritmo cardíaco de Pollença es suave, casi imperceptible para el visitante. Merece la pena no dejar el pueblo sin visitar las galerías de arte Dionís Bennàssar, Espai d'Art 32, Maior o Hito, abiertas en horario de mañana y tarde. Mucha atención a la primera de ellas. Bennàssar ya es el autor de las etiquetas de una de las bodegas de vino con más proyección de la isla, y que además es propiedad del creador de la firma Schwarzkopf, Can Axartell. Por cierto, otra visita recomendable ya que la bodega

está incrustada en el interior de una gran roca. En lo gastronómico es muy recomendable adentrarse en el atrevimiento de la cocina de Clivia, o de sentarse al fresco de las terrazas de la Plaça Major. En ninguna mesa faltan velas.

El municipio de Pollença es mar y montaña. El punto donde emulsionan es en el Faro de Formentor, noticia este año porque las autoridades locales han decidido prohibir el acceso en coche privado durante los meses de julio y agosto. Allí se reciben los primeros golpes de la Tramuntana cuando ésta llega enfurecida a Mallorca. De ahí la rectitud de los acantilados de la zona. Un muy buen plan B es el Mirador d'es Colomer, un alto al que se puede llegar también en bicicleta y que tan sólo está a 5 kilómetros del Port de Pollença.

Si dejamos atrás la montaña conviene ir en busca del mar y de las playas pollencinas, que están entre las mejores de la isla. Albercuix sirve para cualquier hora del día, junto al puerto pero sorprendentemente discreta. Cala Sant Vicenç es obligatoria y

tiene fácil acceso en coche. De postal. Cavall Bernat, merece la pena caminar para llegar a ella. Si las vacaciones dan para un día más, se puede disfrutar de un fantástico chapuzón en Cala Molins.

Y en el Puerto hemos encontrado la otra alma de Pollença, su otro latir. Con abundante oferta de ocio, el conjunto posee las tres grandes virtudes que lo hacen singular: la calidad, la discreción y el mar.

Y del mar vienen los productos estelares de la zona: los pescados frescos. Al menos cuatro establecimientos vienen avalados por los años de fidelidad de su clientela: Romàntic (en Els Tamarells), La Llonja (el restaurante del Club Náutico), Los Faroles (frente al Club Náutico), y apenas a 20 metros, Brisa Marina, de los más antiguos y el más recomendable de este segmento. Será por algo que el público local acude los domingos en familia para comer o un buen cap roig o una sabrosa paella de marisco. Francisco Carmona es co-propietario de Brisa Marina. Sirve 150 raciones de paella cada domingo: “La gente nos responde por la relación pre-

cio/calidad en lo que ofrecemos”.

El puerto da para todo tipo de propuesta gastronómica y para rincones con toda la magia que regala el mar. Es el caso de 'La Terraza' del restaurante del emblemático Hotel Illa d'Or, que ya ha cumplido 90 años. Está al final de la playa de Albercuix justo antes de la Base Naval del Ejército. Allí acude en mayoría el público británico. Es la puesta de sol más encantadora y romántica de todo el puerto, a resguardo del viento. Agustín Durán es el encargado de restaurante y bares de Illa d'Or, y recomienda celebrar ese momento premium de las vacaciones saboreando “el nuevo rape con suquet que elabora nuestro chef francés”.

La oferta hotelera y de restauración da muestras hoy del esfuerzo en modernización de instalaciones y propuestas en todo el puerto. Ahora podemos hablar de una primera línea de muy alto nivel. A eso ha ayudado el aterrizaje en el Port del chef Álvaro Salazar (Linares, Jaén) con su restaurante Argos. Lo suyo fue llegar y besar el puerto porque a su revalidada estrella Michelín se le suma haber sido nombrado Cocinero del Año en la última feria Alimentaria. “Con nuestra propuesta damos un valor añadido al puerto”.

Su restaurante, ARGOS, abre en servicio de cena de martes a domingo. Mediodía sólo sábados y domingos.

Enjoying Pollença Tomàs Ibarz

The near 152 square kilometers belonging to the municipality of Pollença stand out in all aspects to be designated “the best of Mallorca”: landscapes, history, culture, beaches, mountains, tourism, know-how and lifestyle.

The town and the port are just 6 kilometers away from one another, but they represent two hearts that beat at very different paces. The village, situated at the beginning of the mountain range Serra de Tramuntana leads a simple life and keeps its secrets jealously.

Pollença’s heartbeat is soft, hardly noticed by the visitor. Before leaving the village, the art galleries Dionís Bennàssar, Espai d'Art 32, Maior or Hito (open mornings and afternoons) are worth visiting. Special attention should be paid to the first one, as Bennàssar is the official designer for the labels of one of the best considered wine cellars on the island, property of the founder of Schwarzkopf, Can Axartell. This is, by the way, another interesting visit, since the cellar is embedded in a great rock. Regarding gastronomy, it is highly advisable to try the daring cuisine of Clivia, or to make a reservation for one of the outdoor tables in the restaurants at Plaça Major. All tables welcome visitors with shimmering candle lights.

Pollença’s municipality is made of sea and mountains

that merge at Formentor Lighthouse, an attraction that has become news this year because the local authorities have decide to forbid the entrance to private cars during the months of July and August. The Tramuntana winds strike first right there when they decide to pay a visit to Mallorca. Therefore, the cliffs are vertical in this area. It is good to have a plan B, a good one being to overlook the Mediterranean Sea from the viewpoint Mirador d’es Colomer, situated in a high plateau that can be reached as well by bicycle and is only 5 km. away from Port de Pollença.

Once we leave the mountains behind, it is advisable to head for the sea at the beaches of Pollença, considered among the best of the island. Albercuix is good any time of the day, close to the port yet incredibly secluded. Cala Sant Viçenc is a must and easy to reach by car, just a post-card perfect landscape.

The visit to Cavall Bernat is worth the hike, and if you are lucky enough to have one extra day you should enjoy a fantastic swimm at Cala Molins.

At the port we have found the other soul of Pollença, its other heart beat. Even if it bursts with leisure possibilities, it still keeps three strengths that make it special: quality, secrecy and the sea. A sea that provides the most brilliant local foods: fresh fish. Four restaurants are satisfaction-guaranteed, as proved by the loyalty of local clients: Romàntic (at Els Tamarells), La Llonja (the restaurant at Club Náutico), Los Faroles (in front of Club Náutico) and just some 20 meters

away, Brisa Marina, one of the oldest and the best in its category. The locals have good reasons to go there on Sundays to enjoy a cap roig or a seafood paella for meal. Francisco Carmona is one of the owners of Brisa Marina, where paella is served every Sunday for some 150 people. “People visit us because we offer them a good service and fresh products at reasonable prices”.

The Port offers all kinds of gastronomy as well as cosy corners by the sea that burst with magic. Such is the case of “La Terraza”, the restaurant in the 90-yearsold symbolic hotel Illa d’Or situated at the end of Albercuix beach, just before the Army naval base. This is a popular meeting point for the British, who enjoy the most charming and romantic sunset in all Port, sheltered from the wind. Agustín Durán, Restaurants & Bars Manager at Illa d’Or advises to celebrate that special top moment at your vacation tasting “the new anglerfish with suquet, prepared by our French chef”.

The range of restaurants and hotel infrastructures proves the effort made to modernise the port premises. Nowadays we count on a high level frontline that has encouraged the chef Álvaro Salazar to move here from Linares (Jaén) with his restaurant Argos. He arrived to the Port and found the greatest success at the first attempt, since not only did he have his Michelin Star Award renewed, but was also named Cook of the Year at the last Food Fair. “Our culinary proposal represents an added value for the Port”.

09.00h Desayuno 'a la mallorquina'. Adentrarse en el entorno a través de la gastronomía es siempre un buen primer paso. El puerto ofrece 2 alternativas significativas. Una, cómoda, frente al Club Náutico. Un buen 'pamboli' (pan, tomate, sal, aceite y embutidos variados) en el Gran Café 1919. La otra, un 'variat' de tapas en el Celler La Parra, en tercera línea de playa.

Majorcan-style breakfast. Setting foot in a new environment through gastronomy is always a good first step. The port offers two remarkable alternatives. One of them is a really comfortable place in front of the Club: a great “pamboli” (bread, pureed tomatoes, olive oil and a pinch of salt…covered with a variety of sausages and cured meats) at Gran Café 1919. The other suggestion is tasting a “variat de tapas” (small portions of a variety of dishes) at Celler La Parra, situated on the third beach line.

09.45h. Duatlón deportivo. 8 kilómetros en bicicleta por el carril creado para ello y que va del Club Náutico hasta la entrada de Alcúdia. Allí, cambio de deporte para llevar a cabo una sesión de aprendizaje de kitesurf. Hay multitud de establecimientos de alquiler de bicicletas y varias escuelas de Kite en el límite entre Pollença y Alcúdia.

Sports duathlon. 8 Km. cycling along the bike lane from the Club to the town entrance. There, we change from one sport to another and get ready for a kite surf lesson. There are several shops offering bike rentals as well as a variety of kite surf schools close to the limits between Alcúdia and Pollença.

Proteins and a swim to restock on energy. Tolo’s, a restaurant that specialises in grilled meats is very popular among cyclers. A good suggestion would be to enjoy some grilled lamb ribs, then cross the road and take a delightful bath in the sea. We chose this beach because it is equipped with public showers, an important detail to keep on to the next point.

After a shower, feeling fresh and recovered from the kite flight, it’s time to have lunch. We choose a table on the terrace of the restaurant Brisa Marina or in their open-air private room to enjoy one of the best paellas available on the first line of the port. Another possibility would be a fresh fish in Los Faroles, La Llonja or Romàntic. All of them are situated at walking distance.

12.00h Proteínas y aguas cristalinas. En la playa Tamarells está el restaurante de Carnes a la brasa Tolo's. Habitual de ciclistas. Se sugieren unas costillas de cordero a la brasa, cruzar la calzada, y un baño reconstituyente en la playa. Se elige esta playa porque tiene duchas. Importantes para alcanzar el siguiente paso.

14.00h Duchados, descansados y repuestos del vuelo en Kite, llega la hora del almuerzo. Nos sentamos en la terraza de Brisa Marina o en su reservado interior a techo descubierto. Una de las mejores paellas de la primera línea del puerto. Si no, un pescado fresco en Los Faroles, La Llonja o Romàntic. A todos se llega paseando.

16.30h Café digestivo. Si el día es soleado, es difícil resistirse a sentarse en la terraza sobre el mar del Hotel Capri o del Cappuccino. Ubicación inmejorable, trato excelente y la sensación de que el tiempo se detiene. El sol va bajando mientras saboreamos unas hierbas mallorquinas (secas, dulces o mezcladas).

A cup of coffee and an after-meal drink. On a sunny day, sitting in the terrace that overlooks the sea at Hotel Capri, would be a temptation hard to resist. The location is unbeatable and the service is excellent... you’ll just feel the clock slowing down. The light starts to fade as you savour your hierbas mallorquinas (herbal liqueur: dry, sweet or mixed).

17.30h Paseo con arte. En dirección a la Base Naval discurre un paseo a la sombra que acompaña a la playa de Albercuix. Baño recomendado. A la vuelta, visita a la galería de arte Joan XXIII. A stroll to help digestion... in the search for art. After meal, it is so good to go for a walk and we find a great place: the promenade that leads to the Naval Base and to Albercuix beach. It is a very pleasant place to enjoy the sunset and swimming in this beach is highly advisable . On the way back, you can visit the art gallery Joan XXIII.

21.00h Tras reposo y ducha, la cena más romántica y mágica la regala el entorno de la terraza del hotel Illa d'Or. Otro plan, si hemos hecho reserva con suficiente antelación es cenar en Argos, restaurante con una Estrella Michelin. Ofrece dos menús degustación de cocina creativa y atrevida. Y una tercera opción: el silencio del restaurante del hotel Son Brull (necesario coche o taxi).

After some rest and a shower, the terrace of the Hotel Illa d’Or is clearly the most romantic and magic place for dinner. Another possibility (if a reservation has been made enough in advance) is to have dinner at ARGOS, a restaurant awarded with one Michelin Star. Argos offers two alternative gourmet set menus to sample their daring and creative approach to gastronomy. A third option would be the peaceful restaurant at the hotel Son Brull (taxi or car needed).

23.00h Varios planes para las copas. La terraza más bonita, impecable, del puerto es la del hotel Pollentia. Música en vivo jueves y viernes. Muy cerca, cockteleria de calidad y buen ambiente en See.Bar.Is. Cierra a las 2 a.m. misma hora a la que cierra el local Lemon, frente al Hotel Daina. Muy bien ubicado. Tiene mantas por si la brisa enfría las piernas.

Plenty of places to go for a drink. The nicest terrace in Port is the one in hotel Pollentia, simply a perfect place to enjoy live music every Thursday and Friday. There is a fine cocktail bar with a great ambiance nearby, See.Bar.Is, which is open until 2 a.m., just as the bar Lemon, in front of Hotel Daina, in an excellent location and ready to provide blankets to those customers who might find the sea breeze a bit too chilly.

Un Club muy social...

Fiesta del socio Esta celebración anual del RCNPP es todo un éxito. Los amantes de la náutica que forman parte de este club se reúnen cada agosto para pasar una velada agradable entre amigos. Durante este evento los socios que cumplen 25 años dentro de la entidad reciben un pin de plata. Se trata de una fiesta muy esperada por parte de los socios, en la que no solo se come bien, sino que también se respira un ambiente muy agradable y festivo. El año pasado, tras la sobremesa, los 118 socios asistentes y sus acompañantes se animaron a salir a la pista y a bailar al ritmo del Dj Toni Llobera.

Concurso de dibujo Este año el RCNPP ha celebrado la VI edición del concurso de dibujo, cuya temática siempre está relacionada con el mar. Por primera vez, este año han

participado los alumnos de Infantil, de 4 y 5 años de tres colegios de Pollença. Los dibujos se exhibieron en una de las salas del RCNPP y la decoración de los expositores fue elaborada por Joana Far y Guillem Cerdà. Los ganadores, premiados con material escolar, fueron los siguientes: CEIP Port de Pollença: Nayara Ferrer, Enric Hernández, Sabal Ban y Lara Ribas (4 años). Michaela Madada, Uxia Vázquez, Abad Cifre y Zixim Zhang (5 años).

CEIP Miquel Capllonch: Manuel, Marou, Maisha y Noelia (4 años). Jazmín Acheddad, Inés Calvente, Aaron Daniel y Hasra Asbaghi (5 años).

Fogueró de Sant Antoni El 16 de enero el RCNPP enciende un fogueró para celebrar la popular fiesta de Sant Antoni. Los asistentes se colocan al lado de las brasas para ‘torrar’ el género (sobrasada, botifarró, camaiot…) y mientras llenan su estómago aparece las collas de xeremiers para animar el ambiente.

El propio Club es quién organiza este evento en colaboración con la asociación cultural ‘Amics de Sant Antoni’.

Navidad, Segona festa de Nadal y Día de Reyes.

Día 25 y 26 de diciembre, y día 6 de enero el ReÏal Club Nàutic Port de Pollença se vista de largo para recibir y celebrar la Navidad. Por eso, tras una opípara comilona en el restaurante, el Club se inunda de música creando así un ambiente animado y divertido. Este año contó con la participación del grupo Fat Cats Jazz Band y la banda de rock The Hustler.

Membership party The annual celebration at the RCNPP is always a big success. The nautical lovers who make up the membership of this Club gather every August for a nice evening among friends. Members who have been part of the organisation for 25 years are awarded a silver pin during the event. It's a highly-anticipated time of year among the members. Not only do they eat well, they also enjoy the nice and festive atmosphere. After dinner last year, the 118 members and their guests were encouraged to get on to the dance floor and dance to the rhythm of DJ Toni Llobera.

Drawing contest This year the RCNPP held the 6th edition of its drawing contest. The theme for the contest is always related to the sea and this time participants inclu-

ded the very youngest schoolchildren: four and fiveyear-olds from three schools in Pollença. The resulting drawings were displayed at the RCNPP premises in an exhibition prepared by Joana Far and Guillem Cerdà. The winners won prizes in the form of school material and they were the following: CEIP Port de Pollença: Nayara Ferrer, Enric Hernández, Sabal Ban and Lara Ribas (four years old). Michaela Madada, Uxia Vázquez, Abad Cifre and Zixim Zhang (five years).

Sant Antoni bonfire On the 16th of January the RCNPP lights a bonfire to celebrate the popular festival Sant Antoni. Those present gather around the fires to barbecue their dinner (sobrasada, botifarró, camaiot...) and whilst filling their stomachs musicians (the 'collas de xeremiers') arrive to liven up the atmosphere. The Club organises this event itself in collaboration with the cultural association 'Amics de Sant Antoni'.

Christmas, Boxing Day and Twelfth Night On the 25th and 26th of December, and the 6th of January the Real Club Nàutic Port de Pollença dresses up to welcome and celebrate Christmas. The festivities feature a sumptuous meal in the restaurant and afterwards the Club is flooded with music to create a lively and fun atmosphere. This year's celebrations featured the group Fat Cats Jazz Band as well as the rock band The Hustler.

Funeral por Martina Chantenay El 22 de junio el Real Club Nàutic Port de Pollença conmemoró la pérdida de Martina Chantenay, mujer del presidente de la entidad, Alan Ponte, que había fallecido recientemente. Sobre las 19:30 horas, se realizó un funeral en la iglesia del puerto y posteriormente se celebró un cóctel en su honor. El acto contó con un gran número de asistentes que expresaron sus condolencias al presidente.

Funeral for Martina Chantenay On the 22nd of June the Real Club Nàutic Port de Pollença commemorated the loss of Martina Chantenay – wife of the organisation's president Alan Ponte – who had recently passed away. The funeral was held at 19:30 in the port's church and afterwards a cocktail party was held in her honour. The event featured a large number of members who expressed their condolences to the president.

“We were somehow extravagant when the club was founded” as a founding member of rcnpp, he has been a part of it since the beginning and, half a century later, he still is D.D./C.R.

“Cuando se fundó el club, éramos algo extravagante” felip Bellini, miembro fundador del rcnpp, ha estado vinculado al club desde su creación, y medio siglo después, sigue siendo un habitual D.D./C.R.

“En el año 1959 vino a verme un señor, Javier de Marichalar, Marqués de Ciria, que se mudaba a vivir a Pollença. Me dijo: ‘Soy nuevo en el pueblo y quiero hacer tres cosas: un club de golf, otro de tenis y uno de vela’. Yo le contesté: ‘Golf y tenis no me interesan, pero vela sí’. Yo tenía treinta y pico años”. Ha pasado más de medio siglo y Felip Bellini sigue explicando su primer encuentro con el que sería el primer presidente del RCNPP como si hubiese pasado ayer. El Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença no podría entenderse sin su figura, ya que fue él, junto con el citado marqués, los fundadores de la entidad. El libro de aquella primera junta de constitución, en la cual se inscribieron 19 socios fundadores, todavía se puede consultar en la sede de la institución. En el documento se ve la caligrafía de Felip y su nombre en último lugar.

“Hice de secretario en aquella reunión, me apunté el último de la lista”. “Los fundadores pagaban 100.000 pesetas para inscribirse, aunque para los

del Port de Pollença era menos, 10.000 pesetas.”

Lo que nació como un club de vela, acogió un deporte nuevo que pronto les cautivó tanto a él como a su hijo: el windsurf. “Yo mismo recogía a los chicos en el Puerto de Pollença y los llevaba a los diferentes clubes de Mallorca con un remolque donde llevaba las tablas de surf.” Su descendiente, Eduardo, compitió en los JJOO de Los Ángeles’84 y Seúl’88 y él mismo se metió en la Federación Internacional de Windsurf, donde acabó siendo presidente. Por el camino arbitró en competiciones de todo el mundo como en Argentina, Uruguay, Estados Unidos, Tailandia, Singapur, Japón… así como juez olímpico en Barcelona’92.

Bellini está contento con el RCNPP hoy en día.

“Las cosas han cambiado mucho. Cuando se fundó el club, era algo pequeñito porque la vela no era muy popular. Éramos muy pocos, éramos algo extravagante y sólo navegábamos en verano.”

He said: ‘I’m new in this town and there are three things I want to create: a golf club, a tennis club and a sailing club’. ‘I’m not interested in golf or tennis, but I enjoy sailing’, I replied.

I was in my thirties at the time”. Half a century later, Felip Bellini still talks about his first encounter with the man that was to become the first president of RCNPP as if it was yesterday. The Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença wouldn’t be the same without him, as he was, together with the marquis, the person who founded it. The minute book for the first constituent assembly during which the first 19 founding members were inscribed is still kept and available at the Club’s offices. In that document we find Felip’s handwriting and name in the last place. “I was the secretary for that meeting, so I wrote my own name last. The founding members had to pay 100.000 pesetas for the inscription, but those from the Port only had to pay 10.000 pesetas.

What started as a sailing club, soon welcomed a new sport that charmed both him and his son: windsurfing. “I used to pick up the kids at the Port myself and take them to the different clubs around Mallorca equipped with a car trailer where all the boards were stacked”. His son Eduardo competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and in 1988 in Seoul, and he himself joined the International Windsurf Federation and eventually became President. Along his career, he worked as a referee in competitions all around the world: Argentina, Uruguay, United States, Thailand, Japan… and even as an Olympic Judge in 1992 in Barcelona.

Nowadays, Bellini is satisfied with the RCNPP: “Things have changed a lot. When the club was founded, it was something really small because sailing wasn’t very popular in those days. There was just a few of us, we were somehow extravagant and we used to go sailing only during the summer”.

HISTORIAS DEL PUERTO

Tiburón blanco El Port de Pollença conoce de sobra el nombre de Pep Gerrer, uno de los grandes pescadores de la zona cuyos ojos han sido testigos de grandes historias. Este marinero vio de cerca el Vell Marí en las aguas de Cap Pinar y capturó numerosos tiburones entre el año 1941 y 1963. Una de las historias más curiosas es la de Gerrer apresando a un tiburón blanco con cable de acero. La fuerza del animal era tal que, sin esfuerzo alguno, cortó el cable y escapó.

Pep Gerrer is a well-known person in Port de Pollença. His eyes have witnessed great stories.

He took a close look at Vell Marí in the waters of Cap Pinar and caught many sharks from 1941 to 1963. One of his most curious stories took place when he caught a white shark by means of a stainless steel cable. The animal’s strength was such that he easily cut the cable and swam away.

Mestre d’aixa La historia de Stanley Woodward es de lo más interesante. Este americano navegaba con su barco Cat Boat y, sin querer, se topó con el Port de Pollença en el año 1949. Se enamoró al instante de la bahía. Por eso, Woodward se trasladó a este municipio y junto a unos cuantos pollencins y varios ingenieros empezó a construir barcos de recreo que todavía hoy navegan alrededor del mundo.

Stanley Woodward’s story is really interesting.

This American citizen arrived by mistake to Port de Pollença in 1949 on board his boat, named Cat Boat, and fell in love immediately with the bay. For that reason, he moved to this municipality and, in cooperation with some pollencins and several engineers, started building recreational vessels that still sail around the world nowadays.

El hotel Miramar ha sido testigo de muchas historias. Una de las más significativas es cuando una parte de este establecimiento se convirtió en la sede de la compañía de aviación Ala Littoria SPA. Su muelle era el punto en el que se realizaban los embarques y desembarques, y con la ayuda de canoas se trasladaba el pasaje hasta los hidroaviones anclados.

The hotel Miramar has also witnessed many stories. One of the most significant happened when one of the hotel areas became the headquarters of the aviation company Ala Littoria SPA. The hotel’s pier was used for the boarding and disembarking of passengers that would be transported to the anchored seaplanes by means of canoes.

INSTALACIONES El Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença ocupa una superficie de 23.635 m2. ganados al mar con un calado de 2,80 m. en la bocana y 2,70 m. en el interior, con un dique de 400 m. que abriga 375 amarres, de 10 x 35 m. hasta 25 x 6 m., 225 con concesión a socios y 150 del Club, de los que 75 son para transeúntes, todos ellos con servicio de agua y electricidad.

El local social ocupa una superficie aproximada de 2.500 m2. que incluye bar, restaurante, terrazas, piscina, solárium, salón, sala de juntas, oficinas, servicios y vestuarios. Está presidido por un busto del S.M el Rey Felipe VI, obra de Robert Brotherton, y por un mosaico del artista Pitt Cürlis junto a la piscina.

FACILITIES The Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença occupies an area of 23,635 square metres, with a depth of 2.8 metres at the entrance from the sea and 2.7 metres inside. There are 400 metres of dock that provide 375 moorings of 10 x 3.5 metres up to 26 x 6 metres, 225 of which are members’ concessions and 150 for the club, of which 75 are for those in transit. All have water and electricity.

The social centre occupies an area about 2,500 square metres including a bar, restaurant, terraces, swimming pool, solarium, lounge, meeting room, offices, toilets and cloakrooms. It contains a bust of H.M King Felipe VI, the work of Robert Brotherton, and a mosaic by artist Pitt Cürlis alongside the swimming pool.
